In this episode, host Christian Taylor sits down with Emmy-nominated editor and producer Evan Wise, ACE, to delve into his career journey and unique approach to documentary filmmaking. The conversation turns to his latest project, Chimp Crazy, a four-part HBO series that explores the complex world of primates. Evan offers a behind-the-scenes look at Chimp Crazy, discussing the creative and technical challenges of editing a real-time documentary. He emphasizes the importance of finding a compelling story arc, balancing multiple perspectives, and allowing the audience to interpret the narrative independently. He also shares his unique workflow, which involves producing, writing, and editing simultaneously—an approach that fosters flexibility and creativity. Throughout the episode, Evan provides valuable insights and practical advice for aspiring editors. He highlights essential skills like negotiation, teamwork, and self-advocacy, offering listeners an inside view of the collaborative and often intense world of documentary editing. Starting in entry-level roles, like logger or assistant editor, can lead to an editing career. High-profile projects and recognition, like Emmy nominations, can open new doors. Creating a series involves tailoring the format, episode length, and story to the footage available. Presenting multiple perspectives lets the audience form their own opinions. Filming, writing, and editing at the same time allows for creative, flexible storytelling. Creative problem-solving makes scenes more engaging and visually dynamic. Someone invented internet money, and we want to find out who they are. We're not mad, we just want to talk. For a decade and a half, the true identity of “Satoshi Nakamoto,” the author of the Bitcoin whitepaper, has been a closely guarded secret. Several major publications have tried to uncover crypto's founding father, including New Yorker, Vice, Newsweek, New York Times, and Wired. But definitive answers are elusive, despite the fact that Satoshi possibly controls over a million bitcoin worth tens of billions of dollars. In the HBO Documentary “Money Electric: A Bitcoin Mystery” director Cullen Hoback makes an original case that the person behind Satoshi isn't any of the usual suspects. Hoback, who also directed the docuseries “Q: Into the Storm,” believes that Satoshi is the Canadian Bitcoin core developer Peter Todd, who was 23 years old at the time of the whitepaper's publication. Peter Todd, in the film itself and after the film's release, denies that he is Satoshi. We chat with Cullen about what inspired him to take on this project, why it even matters who Satoshi is, the evidence that convinced Cullen that he's “very close to the answer,” and the internet mysteries he plans to tackle in future documentaries. With Swan's pivot into anti-woke discourse, she is taking the next logical step in broadening and secularizing her message.  What's not entirely clear is the pathway Swan has taken from Satanic Panic influencer to a New Age starseed, to unlicensed trauma recovery expert, to this potential future as a culture warrior. Mike Rothschild, a journalist specializing in conspiracy theories, has been collecting their stories for years, and through interviews with QAnon converts, apostates, and victims, as well as psychologists, sociologists, and academics, he is uniquely equipped to explain the movement and its followers. In The Storm Is Upon Us, he takes readers from the background conspiracies and cults that fed the Q phenomenon, to its embrace by right-wing media and Donald Trump, through the rending of families as loved ones became addicted to Q's increasingly violent rhetoric, to the storming of the Capitol, and on. And as the phenomenon shows no sign of calming despite Trump's loss of the presidency—with everyone from Baby Boomers to Millennial moms proving susceptible to its messaging—and politicians starting to openly espouse its ideology, Rothschild makes a compelling case that mocking the seeming madness of QAnon will get us nowhere. Rather, his impassioned reportage makes clear it's time to figure out what QAnon really is — because QAnon and its relentlessly dark theory of everything isn't done yet.

Recorded on a night walk with a flat tire, this episode is slightly different from the usual riverside ramblers because, well, it was recorded at night as opposed to the morning. Which means after a 15-minute opening bit about how I ignored my intuition regarding the flat tire (and how that might have been a good thing), I dive into some of the more fun things I like to think about, including: memories of bad singing in high school, the number 42, aliens and, yes, Q Anon (and why I think it may have been a plan to disarm revolution, rather than lead one). I also discuss why I call cars "egomobiles" and why I hope humanity can envision two Big Projects for its future instead of one. Anyway, since I've already released a podcast this week and this one was a bit less hinged than usual (aka unhinged) I figured I'd throw it up as a bonus episode to help you all make (non)sense out of your weekend.
