It feels a little strange that the start of a new year has coincided with end of this series of Midnight Chats. But then, we have been on a 45 week run. Before we take a little time off to work out what's next for the show, Greg and Stu offer up a parting gift to get our listeners through the coming months, in the form a 2025 preview episode. Who will win big at the Grammy's and Brits? How did Lana Del Rey sell out two nights at Wembley? Will Neil Young make it to Glastonbury? And seriously, has anyone worked out why Robbie Williams is a played by an ape in his biopic? You can watch clips of the podcast online now, just give us a follow on Instagram @midnightchatspod. What a year it's been... for some people. Others have had real stinkers. For the final 2024 episode of Midnight Chats, Greg and Stu look back at the highs and lows of the year and ask how the history books will remember its music moments. Kendrick versus Drake. Morrissey verses Marr. Oasis versus themselves. Charli, Chappell and Sabrina. It's all here in this Boxing Day special! This week's episode of Midnight Chats is all about Greg's and Stu's favourite albums of 2024, with a little room to also discuss the records that definitely weren't. They can't all be winners, but Greg and Stu have brought 3 of their favourites each to pitch against one another. We also hear your favourites, and from some past and future Midnight Chats guests, including Biig Piig, Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods, Richard Dawson, Aurora and Anna B Savage. The Coachella lineup is out, and often it can tell us a lot about what to expect from the year ahead. But how does 2025's bill stand up, when did Coachella become so powerful, and was it Greg attending in 2012 with a hologram to Tupac that made all other celebrities want to go? Away from our tales of the festival (Stuart has also been to Coachella, but with little affect on its popularity), on episode 159 of Midnight Chats we review the new surprise release from Kendrick Lamar 'GNX' and spare a thought for Drake at this difficult time. Kate Nash has become the latest musician to start an OnlyFans to fund her artistry. And what does the strange BBC Sound of 2025 poll tell us about public appetite for new music? As Kaiser Chiefs announce shows for 2025 celebrating 20 years of their debut album, with support from Razorlight, We Are Scientists, The Cribs and The Coral, Greg and Stu put their heads together to come up with an alternative bill of artists who released records 20 years ago. The Carling will be served warm and the weather will be terrible. Welcome to the inaugural Midnight Chats festival! Also on this week's podcast, Grammy nominations and predicted winners, as little about Trump as possible, and what are the worst 3 Christmas songs. Seven years ago Laura Marling came on episode 19 of the podcast at a very different time in her life. As she prepares to release her 8th album, Patterns in Repeat, this month (25 Oct), she does so as a new mother, who's trained to become a yoga teacher, who's gained a masters in psychoanalysis, who's formed a band called LUMP, who's quite touring, who's communicating directly with fans via a quite brilliant Substack newsletter about the craft of songwriting. All of the above is covered in this week's episode of Midnight Chats, as well as discussion about death, T.V., secretly cooking for Damon Albarn and John Paul Jones with not great results, and the beauty of a new, sparse album recorded with a baby daughter literally by your side in your living room. What's been our most awkward interview yet? How do we charm our guests? Who have we been starstruck by? And c'mon guys, why is this thing called 'Midnight Chats'? As our podcast reaches its 150 episode, Greg and Stu celebrate by showing how the sausage is made, sharing stories and their tricks of the trade while trading some of their favourite clips from MC's illustrious history, and answering our listeners' questions about which guest has had the smoothest hands. Also in this special episode, Stu premieres his new jingle for Beat The Algorithm, he and Greg give you their new music tips, and Greg faces this week's Top 3. New York musician Cassandra Jenkins really shouldn't be on Midnight Chats, or any podcast talking about her new album, My Light, My Destroyer, because that record, near-perfect though it is, was never going to be made. On this week's episode she tells Stu about how she had decided to quite music after releasing her last album, but things went unexpectedly well, so here we are, discussing one of the best albums that will be released in 2024, Jenkins' obsession with space, finding inspiration in a billionaire sending Captain Kirk into space, her Manhattan home life living with her parents, and what happens next is this "bonus round" of her life. Stuart got the hot ticket. Greg did not. In the field, and from the sofa at home, Midnight Chats does Glastonbury 2024. Your hosts tackle the biggest talking points from the most famous music festival in the world. Did Dua Lipa fulfill her promise to turn Worthy Farm into a club on her headliner debut? Was SZA's microphone fresh out of batteries? Did Coldplay bring the world together in a moment of communal feeling, or was it a bad acid trip? Did Louis Tomlinson steal a TV from the local Curries? All these essential questions answered, and more. What did you make of this episode. Please let us know and share your thoughts and questions at Greg@loudandquiet.com or DM us on Instagram @midnightchatspod. Frontman with one of Britain's biggest modern rock bands, Yannis Philippakis recently launched Yannis & The Yaw – not so much a solo project, more of an experiment in collaboration. Dial back seven years and Yannis spent time writing songs with one of his heroes, the icon drummer Tony Allen – godfather of Afrobeat and distinguished collaborator with everyone from Damon Albarn to Air. The result is a posthumous project – Allen died in 2020 – titled ‘Lagos Paris London' released in August 2024. Yannis goes deep with host Greg Cochrane about his “cross generational” bond with Allen, and the other legendary artists he'd love write with Yannis & The Yaw. Plus, he discusses the evolving future of his band Foals, chats about his passion for gardening and why he's writing music for some contemporary theatre productions. The Blessed Madonna – truly one of the most engaging, fun and opinionated guests we've welcomed onto Midnight Chats. One of the world's foremost DJs, producers and curators, Marea Stamper invited Greg Cochrane to her intimate London studio Godspeed to record this colourful conversation. Topics covered: 2024 and this turbulent time in politics and journalism; her unique relationship with the iconic track ‘Marea (We Lost Dancing)' by Fred again… and stories of cooking pasta for Daft Punk when they literally came to the house. Oh, and while there's still no confirmed release date for her much anticipated debut album, there's lots of chat about what to expect when it does finally drop. Enjoy! We've reached the final episode in this mini series to bridge the gap between series of Midnight Chats, made up of a few of our favourite episodes from another podcast we made called Sweet 16, which until now has only been available to subscribers of Loud And Quiet. These are brief recordings, all in the words of the artists, who recall what they were up to when they were 16 years old.We recorded – well – 16 episodes in total, which you can fully access by subscribing to Loud And Quiet at loudandquiet.com. While we're in between series of Midnight Chats, I thought I'd share a few of my favourite episodes from another podcast we made called Sweet 16, which until now has only been available to subscribers of Loud And Quiet. These are brief recordings, all in the words of the artists, who recall what they were up to when they were 16 years old.We recorded – well – 16 episodes in total, which you can fully access by subscribing to Loud And Quiet at loudandquiet.com. But in the meantime, here, at least, is what Australian musician Alex Cameron had to say about his year as a 16-year-old when we spoke to him in August 2019Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/midnightchats. It was one of the darkest days in the history of the U.S. State Department, and a low for the administration of Barack Obama. On September 11, 2012, the terrorist attack on the diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya resulted in the deaths of Ambassador Christopher Stevens, information officer Sean Smith, and former Navy SEALs and CIA contractors Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods. As the attack raged on the compound, the American security apparatus misread the situation and failed the Benghazi Four in the critical hour. Brad Podliska, a former US Air Force intelligence officer, served on the House Select Committee on Benghazi. In his chat with Paul Runyan, he gives Midnight Ride listeners a blow-by-blow recap of the attack on Benghazi, as well as what the committee learned was going on back in Washington, DC, as bureaucrats failed every step of the way, including lying to the American people as to what precipitated the attack on the compound. The actions, failures, and falsehoods--whether accidental or deliberate--of Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice, and current National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan are detailed. Today, more than 10 years later, no one has been held accountable for the failures of the US government to respond to the attack. Podliska explains that, predictably, in an election year, Democrats circled the wagons to protect President Obama's reelection prospects, while Republicans narrowed the scope of their investigation to Secretary Clinton. When Podliska objected to what he called hyperpartisanship, he was relieved of his duties. Eventually, he would find himself on the cover of the New York Times, on CNN, and on FOX News with Sean Hannity. What the Benghazi Select Committee showed us was that Americans should view all congressional investigations with a healthy dose of skepticism about their impartiality. We hope you enjoy this in-depth interview. In a society that employs an all-volunteer military force, cultural rot will also seep into our armed forces. In our second edition of Midnight Chats, Paul sits down with Tom Burbage, a retired Navy test pilot and senior defense executive who left the golf course to fight to keep the military free of wokeism. Burbage is a member of the Calvert Task Group (calverttaskgroup.com), a group of retired Naval officers collaborating with a group called Standing Together Against Racism and Radicalization in the Services, or STARRS. The two discuss a range of military topics, including how Calvert fought to keep a top student at Annapolis from being expelled for pro-police tweets during the riots of 2020, how the war in Ukraine is depleting our own military's ammunition and stocks, and whether our defense industrial base is prepared for a possible war with China. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
