Today we speak to a man who has been in and around football for over 40 years. Mark Bowen played over 400 games at the top of English football for the likes of Tottenham, Norwich and West Ham, before transitioning into management as both a head coach and assistant. For much of his management career he has partnered with Mark Hughes, acting as his assistant manager at Man City, Stoke, Southampton, Fulham and QPR. Most recently Mark has spent a number of years with Reading, and is currently going through a delicate process around his exit from the club; a conversation for another time. However this is something that we have wanted to do for a long time. Quite a lot of our shows fall into the more serious ‘business of sport' category. Having got to know Mark, this is someone that has seen the inner workings of clubs transacting at the highest level, and has some incredible stories to tell off the back of it. From being at Man City when they were bought by Sheik Mansour and the Abu Dhabi Group to being in the opposing dugout for QPR when Aguero scored THAT goal, this played to the kid in both of us while emphasising the fact that the business of football isn't always a smooth process. Kick back and enjoy some proper tales of signings, sackings, and outrageous transfer bidding. On today's show we discuss: The birth of the new Man City: Which players did Sheik Mansour want to sign as a statement transfer when he bought the club? How do you integrate a load of new players to form a cohesive team when the money is flowing and budgets are virtually endless. The incredible transfer story of signing both Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta after the sale of one key player, and the conversation he had to have with Kompany when he arrived. Lionel Messi for £35m? How the club accidentally bid for one of the greatest players ever. Why was Mark Hughes fired by the club with the club flying in both the league and cups, and what happens to managers when they get that call? Tales from Stoke, Southampton, and QPR: Turning Stoke into a top performing Premier League club who were able to attract top European talent like Bojan and Shaqiri. Overseeing a QPR team struggling for survival in the League with Joey Barton as captain and Tony Fernandes as owner. The Man City title win story…from the QPR dugout: what does Mark attribute that memorable Aguero moment to? Moving to Southampton and the challenge of managing top teams when there is an agreement to sell players you want to keep. Football vs Money: Harry Redknapp's reaction to Mark leaving West Ham to sign for a Japanese club…and the number that persuaded him the offer was too good to turn down. How to manage your personal life in football when the team takes you away from your family and home. Is it worth it? Is it always about the money, or do players need to be incentivised by other things in and around clubs? Where was Mark at his happiest both as a player and a manager? IDLES 2021 Rig Rundown: https://youtu.be/ZyofmA3bJk4Subscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeBetween 2016 and 2024, Bristol outfit IDLES have gone from being snarling, post-punk underdogs to being snarling, post-punk champions. Their debut LP, Brutalism, was an immediate hit, and since then they've turned out a string of full-length records that have expanded their creative vocabulary while increasing their popularity. It's all come to a head this year with Tangk, their Grammy-nominated fifth album, which dropped in February.Along the way, IDLES' sound has mutated into experimental offshoots and outgrowths, so it's little surprise that the rigs of guitarists Mark Bowen and Lee Kiernan, along with bassist Adam Devonshire, have done the same. While they still tour with some of the gear they showed off on our 2021 Rig Rundown, each player has fun new trinkets that contribute to their run of shows this year. But even with all the new toys, they keep an element of danger in the mix, and certain variables mean the set sounds different every night: “People come to see an IDLES show 'cause it almost falls apart all the time,” grins Bowen.IDLES 2021 Rig Rundown: https://youtu.be/ZyofmA3bJk4Subscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPG Don't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar0:00 - Electronic Audio Experiments & D'Addario0:15 - IDLES Live0:39 - Chris Kies Intro0:59 - Mark Bowen's Baritone Stratocasters5:37 - Mark Bowen's "Stinky" 1972 Strat7:43 - Mark Bowen's Amps & Cabinets10:14 - Mark Bowen's Fender Mustang with Fishman TriplePlay12:57 - Mark Bowen's "Crawler" Pedal & Synth Rig16:17 - Recreating Tangk Album Live Onstage20:10 - Mark Bowen's Sonic Curiousity22:19 - Does Joe Talbot Get Tired of Gear Experimentation?23:17 - Working with Nigel Godrich on Tangk25:14 - Lee Kiernan Intro25:45 - Lee Kiernan's Fender 70th Anniversary Esquire27:54 - Lee Kiernan's Fender Mustang29:55 - Lee Kiernan's Jackson Soloist SL132:12 - Lee Kiernan's Amps33:20 - Lee Kiernan's Marshall 1987X Plexi35:34 - Lee Kiernan's Hiwatt Custom DR8836:35 - Lee Kiernan's 1970s Peavey Deuce40:00 - Rig Rundown & D'Addario40:23 - Lee Kiernan's Pedalboard40:55 - Lee Kiernan's Pedals for "Jungle"45:57 - Lee Kiernan's Pedals for "Dancer"50:41 - Lee Kiernan's New Earthquaker Devices Gary Pedal55:39 - Lee Kiernan's Baritone Esquire56:36 - Lee Kiernan's Pedals for "Roy"01:03:00 - Adam Devonshire Intro01:03:44 - Adam Devonshire's Fender American Ultra Jazz Bass01:04:38 - Adam Devonshire on IDLES Gear Evolution01:06:15 - Adam Devonshire on Holding Down Rhythm with Jon Beavis01:07:07 - Adam Devonshire on Bass Influences01:08:19 - Adam Devonshire Custom Neck for Jazz Bass01:09:30 - Adam Devonshire on Recreating Tangk Onstage01:11:25 - Adam Devonshire's 1970s Fender Precision Bass01:14:25 - Adam Devonshire's Serek Lincoln Bass01:16:04 - Adam Devonshire's Fender & Hiwatt Amps01:17:08 - Adam Devonshire's Pedalboard01:24:55 - D'Addario Strings[Brought to you by D'Addario: https://ddar.io/wykyk-rr]© Copyright Gearhead Communications LLC, 2024#guitar #rigrundown #idles #guitarist #guitarplayer #guitargear #bass #bassguitar

"Bristol, England, based band, Idles, recently released their fifth album, Tangk. Produced by the band's guitarist, Mark Bowen, along with Nigel Godrich and Kenny Beats, Tangk explores new sonic territory for the band – including the use of tape loops – making for a rich and nuanced landscape for singer Joe Talbot's deeply personal lyrics and raw delivery. Geoff Stanfield caught up with Joe and Mark while the band was on tour, to discuss the making of Tangk, working with Nigel and more! Enjoy!”

Since releasing their critically acclaimed debut album, Brutalism, in 2017, the British band IDLES have dropped four other albums in quick succession. The band's bombastic sound brilliantly balances joy, chaos, and an often critical take on the powers that be. IDLES latest album, TANGK, was produced by the band's guitarist Mark Bowen, Kenny Beats, and Radiohead producer, Nigel Godrich. On today's episode Justin Richmond talks to Joe Talbot and Mark Bowen from the greenroom of the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon about their tumultuous creative partnership. They also explain how Mark helps temper Joe's sometimes passionate rage, and Joe breaks down why he will forever despise England's monarchy. IDLES are a British rock band formed in Bristol in 2009. The band consists of Joe Talbot (vocals), Mark Bowen (guitar), Lee Kiernan (guitar), Adam Devonshire (bass) and Jon Beavis (drums). A self-proclaimed 'angry band' from Bristol in Southwest England, IDLES take the fury of punk rock and wed it to a muscular but moody instrumental attack that matches the literate, purposeful menace of their lyrics. Lead singer and lyricist Joe Talbot's full-bodied ranting, in which he offers his vehement opinions on the state of British culture and his own personal issues, is matched by the rich, angular blast of the musicians, who can swing from melodic to brutally hard at a moment's notice. In this episode all songs selected by IDLES as guests for Australian TV show Rage, on Saturday June 8, 2019. Lineup: Crows, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Grinderman, The Stooges, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Heavy Lungs, Spiritualized, Queens of the Stone Age, LCD Soundsystem, Grimes, Fuck Buttons, BAMBARA, Parquet Courts, Preoccupations, Gilla Band, Death Grips, Tyler, The Creator, Pusha T, Ginuwine, Velcro Hooks, Turbowolf, Pulled Apart By Horses, Cold War Kids, LIFE, Death From Above 1979, Foals, The Futureheads, Archie Bronson Outfit, Spring King, Fontaines D.C., Metz, The Walkmen, LICE, SOFT PLAY, A Place To Bury Strangers, Beak, Death In Vegas, Arab Strap, SUUNS, TV On The Radio, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Spectres, Mogwai, Q Lazzarus, IDLES, Fugazi, DEN, Future Islands, Iggy Pop, Talking Heads, Tears For Fears, The Cure, The National, Einstürzende Neubauten, To Rococo Rot

When Mark Hughes was appointed City manager in the summer of 2008, he brought with him his backroom staff from his previous role at Blackburn Rovers - and that included his assistant manager, Mark Bowen. It was a turbulent time, as the club was close to administration before Thaksin Shinawatra sold it to Sheikh Mansour during their first season at Eastlands. In 2020, the Blue Moon Podcast's David Mooney spoke to the former assistant to find out what went on behind the scenes during that time - until the pair were sacked in December 2009. No room for errors this week as we went brave and broadcasted the podcast live on Youtube and Facebook. We had around 50 live viewers which was really appreciated and allowed for some lively discussion. Stu was joined by Mark, Spike and a slightly late Rob who had fallen asleep - I hasten to add that this was not during the show.We discussed the recent BBC London Show which included an interview with Mark Bowen and also looked at the new additions to the Dons Trust Board along with an honest assessment of the summer in store and our important league game at Fleetwood on Saturday.
Aaron Paul is joined by Barrow manager Phil Brown and on-loan Birmingham City forward Lyle Taylor for a look at the key stories in the EFL and beyond this week. We look at whether Derby County have turned a corner off-the-field after US businessman Chris Kirchner was named as the preferred bidder for the club. BBC Radio Derby's Ed Dawes gives us all the latest. AFC Wimbledon's Mark Bowen tell us about his start to life as the club's manager, and whether he thinks he can keep the club in League One. And the panel examine the potential promotions and relegations in the EFL this weekend, with Fulham aiming to return to the Premier League, while Crewe and Scunthorpe are hoping to hold off relegation. TIMECODES 04:20 - Phil Brown on his first two weeks as Barrow manager; 08:00 - A look at Fulham's potential promotion and the rest of the Championship promotion race; 14:00 - Derby County's takeover latest with Ed Dawes; 26:30 - Scunthorpe United head for relegation; 34:30 - Interview with AFC Wimbledon's Mark Bowen.
What have Nick and Stu made of our first two games under Mark Bowen? We're talking team selection, formations, tactics (is 'low-block' a Brentism?), and individual responsibility. We also look ahead to Saturday's game, and Nick makes quite the prognostication.
Jonathan Oakes is joined by Don Goodman and Gary Weaver to discuss all the latest from the Championship, League One and League Two.In the Championship (from the start) the panel take a look at how Fulham and Bournemouth continued on their path towards promotion, Huddersfield claimed a big win and Blackburn suffered another blow to their play-off hopes after being held late on at Coventry.Nottingham Forest's play-off charge continued with a thumping comprehensive win over Blackpool, Barnsley and Reading drew in a huge relegation clash, and Swansea fan Lee Staddon (@swanscastmedia) assesses an historic win at Cardiff. We then hear from Millwall midfielder Jed Wallace (25m58s), as he answers our quickfire questions in Ten To Tackle, before taking a look back at a victory for Rotherham over Sutton United in the Papa John's Trophy final at Wembley. In League One (30m34s) MK Dons kept up the pressure on Wigan and Rotherham at the top, AFC Wimbledon were beaten at Sheffield Wednesday in Mark Bowen's first game in charge of the relegation strugglers, and Burton fan Jack Stout (@BrewersTV) assesses their campaign and what the future holds for the club under Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. And in League Two (50m10s) Northampton's recent stumbles continued as they lost to fellow promotion challengers Mansfield, Salford continued their charge towards the play-offs as they beat Hartlepool, Oldham's survival hopes were boosted by a win at fellow strugglers Stevenage and Scunthorpe fan Chris Walker (@friendsofpakati) discusses their gloomy trip towards the drop to non-league. All that and much, much more!
Lee and Danny discuss the defeat to Cambridge. Then they talk about Robbo departing, was our bad run solely down to Robbo or was he dealt a bad hand by the DT and PLC boards. Was Joe Palmer to blame or was it down to all of the above. We now have a new manager in Mark Bowen and his assistant Eddie Niedzwiecki, they have 7 games to save our season. Our thoughts on the appointment. Preview the away game to Sheffield Wednesday.
This weekend we take on AFC Wimbledon, another team making their first trip to Hillsborough (in their current guise). The Dons are in awful form at the moment, with no win in their last 20 games, but they'll be looking for that 'new manager bounce' as Mark Bowen takes charge of his first game since being appointed as manager earlier in the week. We spoke to Ray, a lifelong Dons fan, to get the lowdown on what we're to expect this weekend as the two teams meet for just the second time. After a brief mid-season interval, Pete, Neil and Maz are back and they're going back to the first year of the Premier League. For most of the season, Norwich City threatened to 'do a Leicester', leading the title race for most of the year playing freeflowing football and winning friends along the way. The following year saw memorable trips to Vitesse Arnhem and, more famously Bayern Munich. From Bryan Gunn to Jeremy Goss, and Mark Robins to Mark Bowen, relive a remarkable 18 months in the history of the Canaries... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The last ever Starrcade !! Was it any good ?
Do you hear that thunder? That's the sound of strength in four 100-watt stacks. (Actually, one is a 200-watt bass tube head.) IDLES' guitarists Mark Bowen and Lee Kiernan finally have the firepower to match their fury. (Original members singer/lyricist Joe Talbot, drummer Jon Beavis, and bassist Adam Devonshire fill out the band. Kiernan took over for guitarist Andy Stewart after 2015 EP Meat was released.) For much of the 2010s, the bashers from Bristol played on anything and plugged into everything. Low-budget imports and solid-state combos were what they had and they made that work. They toiled around the U.K. sharpening their sneering tongue, quickening their sting, and focusing their vision. Doing so meant playing small rooms as much as possible. So the need and access for big, potent, top-shelf gear was unnecessary. That volatile energy, sensible setups, and Sten-gun attack anchored both 2017's Brutalism and 2018's Joy as an Act of Resistance. The popularity in those releases opened doors to new tools and the time to explore fresh tones and approaches. When writing Ultra Mono, Bowen and Kiernan looked for sounds rather than riffs. “The noise-making had to be thought of from the start,” Bowen told PG in 2020. “We basically created a sound palette first, and once we created a sound, that sound informed the riffs.” And the most obnoxious sounds on Ultra Mono were intentional. “When we were writing this album, we'd go to random guitar shops and ask them for the weirdest pedals they had,” adds Kiernan. “It may sound useless, but it still might touch you somehow. Every now and then, a pedal that does something really weird will kick you into gear.” Using hip-hop beats as a North Star and often performing on their instruments as drummers, the duo unlocked a combination of heartless sounds for Ultra Mono that elevated Talbot's heartfelt (and challenging) lyrics. For the just-released Crawler, they continued exploring obtuse sounds. Some continued to be unusual to the masses and others were atypical for IDLES. “Car Crash” is a disjointed, cold-war-siren-sounding, brooding banger. Considering its brash, bizarrely brilliant predecessor, it's right in line. However, one track no one saw coming was “The Beachland Ballroom”—a bring-you-to-your knees soul song. The incessant brave exploration advances their brutal power, supports their menacing energy, and paints with broad colors to complement Talbot's biting commentary and tales of personal troubles. Touring ahead of 2021's Crawler (now available), IDLES' Mark Bowen and Lee Kiernan invited PG to Nashville's Cannery Ballroom for an extended gear chat before their sold-out show. Just ahead of soundcheck, Kiernan clarified his seemingly callous treatment of his Fenders, while Bowen establishes that his acrylic Electrical Guitar Company EG 500 is heavy to dance about onstage, but its “angry piano” sound makes it worth it. They explain why they need a collective of five pedalboards and 50+ stomps to cover guitar, bass, baritone, synth, inhuman sounds, and whatever they mean when they say “genk.” (In a 2020 interview with PG, Bowen described the term like this: “'Mr. Motivator' is a good example: Lee makes this ‘genk' noise that sounds like a hammer in a metal factory, and he plays that along with the drums, and that part really only occupies a frequency range around 1.2k to 2.3k—which is a large bandwidth, but it's where the transients of the drums and the cymbals sit. That part really pops in that space.” Also, Bowen and Kiernan created a YouTube show called Genks during the pandemic, which focuses on effects. (Even if you're a minimalist, it's worth a watch for the laughs.) Big thanks to IDLES tech Gavin Maxwell. "We are not a punk band", is how lead singer Joe Talbot has described the sound of this Bristol band "IDLES", however we can't deny that IDLES does kind of have that punk energy when it comes to their music. Hard hitting, high energy but lyrically poignant, sarcastic and at times darkly comedic."IDLES" were formed in Bristol in the mid 2000's when after DJ'ing around the city a few of the members decided they wanted to create their own music. It took some time, and several line-up changes, before they finally found their sound, kicking off in 2015 with their debut EP's "Welcome" and "Meat/Meta". Since then they have released 3 full length studio albums, toured the world and remained humble. Joe says their ethos has always been to work hard and not seek gratitude, believing that if you stick to your guns, and your passions, everything will ultimately align. There is so much more to know, so we welcome you to join the conversation with Jay and Jesse and listen to some of their top "IDLES" picks. on this latest edition of Roots to Grooves".To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

In this episode John is joined by Idles guitarist Mark Bowen along with co-producers Nick Launay and Adam “Atom” Greenspan to talk about how they wrote, recorded and produced the band’s latest album ‘Ultra Mono’. Unearthing backstage phone demos and rehearsal room recordings, Bowen, Nick and Adam look back on how the album was pulled together, from the band’s chats about concepts to the eight days recording the whole record. Reminiscing on their time in La Frette Studios, we hear stories of both the raucousness and intense focus encapsulated within an Idles session. The trio dig into the explosive drum recording, their staircase microphone setup and the special sauce that forms the very essence of an Idles track. Listen to find out what happened when Warren Ellis made a surprise studio visit, why everyone got sent out of the room during some of the vocal takes, and why civilised French lunches were so key to the album’s success. WA-CHING....that's the sound of Ali and Dan Seven returning for Season Two of the Seven Song Setlist podcast. Although the doors to live music venues across the country are still locked shut and bands remain unable to tour, gig goers Ali and Dan try their best to replicate the excitement of going to see your favourite artists. From the merch table to the bar, the support band to the headline act, the Seven Song Setlist podcast hopes to support the artists that we love through an exercise in 'gig economy (no, not that kind...), as we argue our case for our most loved songs and try to agree on the songs we would want these bands to play if they could only perform a seven song setlist! And, after scoring their first number one album with Ultra Mono earlier this month, and on the eve of the world premiere of the film Don't Go Gentle, at London's BFI Southbank, who better to kick off the new season with than the ferocious prophets of positivity....the mighty IDLES!Formed in Bristol in 2009 by sixth form friends Joe Talbot and Adam ‘Dev’ Devonshire. Guitarist Mark Bowen, a former dentist who is better known nowadays for ripping off his clothes and parading around on stage in his CK’s rather than ripping out teeth, joined the band after moving from Belfast to Bristol, and by 2014, John Beavis and Lee Kiernan completed the line up that have achieved so much success since they literally roared onto the scene with their 2017 debut album, Brutalism. Championed in the early days by the legend that is Steve Lamacq – the unofficial sixth member of Idles – and the station on which he DJ’s, BBC6Music, IDLES. Their second album, the Mercury music prize nominated Joy As An Act Of Resistance extended a warm embrace to lots of people around the world who needed a band like Idles in their lives to make sense of the chaos. Proof of this can be found in the AF Gang, an online community of over 31 thousands Idles founded by Lindsay Melbourne fans that has become a vital part of of their lives and is now almost as well known as the band themselves. A carnival like atmosphere at their appearance on the Park Stage was one of the highlights of the 2019 edition of the Glastonbury festival, and they capped off last year with their biggest headline show to date, at London’s iconic Alexandra Palace. Had this year not robbed us all of live music, there is not doubt that the tracks from IDLES latest offering, Ultra Mono, would have filled arenas around the country and propelled them ever closer to the top of festival bills around the world. We also chat about the 80's Australian indie heroes, the Go-Betweens, the recent announcement that Arctic Monkeys are releasing a live album with proceeds going to War Child, where IDLES go next and if they'll follow Turner and co. and end up as the moon's next resident band...EPISODE LINKSAF GANG(from the merch table) Arctic Monkeys live at the Royal Albert Hall for War Child Don't Go Gentle: A Film About IDLES(this ep's support act) The Go-Betweens 'Streets of Your Town' IDLES npr music Tiny Desk Concert (one of our favourite things on the internet) - IDLES perform 'Never Fight A Man With A Perm' on the Park Stage, Glastonbury 2019 IDLES official website; store full of incredible merchandise and music - KEXP Performance and interview with Mark Bowen

Dean Jones (@deanjonesbr) steps in to present this week, as Jack Collins gets a well deserved break. Current day football is throwing up scenarios that were simply unimaginable ten years ago, so Rank God Sam Tighe (@brsamtighe) breaks down the duos that define the game as we know it today, while B/R Football's Joanna Kamenou (@joannakamenou) also joins the lads in the studio. In Hot Takes Dean discusses how Liverpool have never endured a Premier League season quite as bad as the one Man United are about to go through (02:38), Sam tells us why Borussia Monchengladbach are the best counter attacking team in Europe (07:48), and Jo tells the world why Romelu Lukaku needs to be considered one of the best strikers of a generation (12:20). From the Bleacher Roulette wheel this week, the Rank Squad discuss who will last longer in their job: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Zinedine Zidane (42:13), which flavour potato chips would suit superstar footballers (44:02), and which football villains they have a soft spot for (46.09). Sam rounds things off as usual with a nonsense ranking, this time on Reading's new manager Mark Bowen (48:20). It has now been a full seven days since the start of The Official Red Dwarf Fan Club's nineteenth convention, but the feeling of elation is yet to wear off, along with the taste of the booze and the complete physical and mental exhaustion. To preserve the memories for years to come, as well as to fill in those who were unable to attend, a merry band of extremely tired people congregated in a hotel room on the Sunday night to record the traditional post-DJ DwarfCast. Those people were Danny Stephenson and Ian Symes from G&T, Alex Newsome, Joey Newsome, Carrie Parsons, Shelley Smith and Jo Sharples from the Fan Club, DJ helpers Amy Foley, Kiran Parsons, Tom Pyott and Lauren Seamans, and DJ attendees Mark Bowen, Stephen R. Fletcher, Heledd Flower, Dan "Pendo" Pendleton and Jonathan "Jonsmad" Young. We tried to go through the weekend in chronological order, but it soon descended into a hotch-potch of such diverse topics as pink helmets, giant bazookoids, confused firemen, Michael McGruder, six degrees of separation, four-way coffee lounge cocks, Morris dancing, signed babies, gay rays, the quizzing skills of Seb Patrick and a definitive answer as to the future of Red Dwarf. Only one of those is a lie.
