We’re kicking off Season 4 of She Pivots with podcast royalty - Armchair Expert co-creator and co-host, Monica Padman! I’ve always marveled at Monica’s ability at getting her guests to open up. But her own story is one that I think is so important to lift up. Monica didn’t just stumble into her current role. She started as a babysitter and assistant for Dax Shepard (her now co-host) and Kristin Bell, all while pursuing her dream of being an actress. Once the idea for Armchair Expert emerged, Monica leaned into the opportunity, embracing the unexpected, while also staying aligned to who she is at her core. Her story showcases the importance of assistants, who bring a massive skill set to their roles and are often the best at building something from the ground up, and the reality that taking a path you didn’t plan can actually lead you to where you’re meant to be. Be sure to subscribe, leave us a rating, and share with your friends if you liked this episode! She Pivots was created by host Emily Tisch Sussman to highlight women, their stories, and how their pivot became their success. This week on Flightless Bird, David Farrier takes Monica's advice from an earlier episode and investigates America's obsession with quilts. He begins his journey by interviewing quilting podcaster Ashelyn Downs of “The Grateful Thread”. Farrier discovers that quilting is not just oldies sitting by the fire, but that there's a new movement of younger, more diverse quilters taking over America. He sets off to meet Latifah Saafir, an engineer who now makes some of the most amazing quilts you'll see, incorporating bits of her culture and life into the quilts she makes. David then stops in on another young quilter, Luke Haines, who has some of his quilts hanging on gallery walls. Luke insists on making a quilt featuring the one and only Monica Padman.
Three news stories summarized & contextualized by analytic journalist Colin Wright.Amazon sued by FTC and 17 states over allegations it inflates online prices and overcharges sellersSummary: E-commerce giant Amazon has been sued by the US Federal Trade Commission and 17 states on allegations of monopolistic abuse of power.Context: This lawsuit is the result of a years-long investigation, and is considered to be a substantial threat to the company; the primary complaint is that Amazon has used its centrality to the online sales world to incentivize sellers to not offer lower prices on their goods elsewhere, to bury less-expensive options on their own listings, to charge sellers increasingly high fees, to force merchants to raise their prices over time—on and off Amazon—and to compete with folks selling on Amazon in anti-competitive ways; there are also allegations of replacing search results with ads, positioning their own brands over often better versions of the same from other companies, and overall just utilizing its position of power to kill off competition; Amazon controls something like 40% of the US e-commerce market, and Amazon has said this is an overstep by the FTC, and that it has done nothing illegal.—The Associated PressOne Sentence News is a reader-supported publication. To support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Spotify is going to clone podcasters' voices and translate them to other languagesSummary: Audio-streaming company Spotify has announced a new partnership with ChatGPT developer OpenAI that will allow them to clone the voices of podcasters, with those podcasters' permission, and then use those voices to create dubs of their shows in different languages.Context: The announcement included example, translated episodes from well-known podcasters like Lex Fridman, Bill Simmons, and Monica Padman, and though this isn't a completely novel generative AI utility—other, smaller companies are offering similar services, many using the same OpenAI Whisper tool that Spotify's using—Spotify is a behemoth in this space, and even if these dubs are imperfect (and they absolutely are) this could open up a whole lot of currently English-language content to folks who speak other languages, and it could, if made widely available and cheap or free, make audio content in any language available to folks who speak every other language, expanding the reach of all such content, and the ideas and personalities and information it carries.—The VergeDonald Trump found liable for fraud in New York civil caseSummary: A New York State Supreme Court judge has found former US President Trump liable for fraud for consistently overstating the value of his assets in financial statements, allowing him to fraudulently attain favorable terms on loans and other financial tools over the years.Context: Trump allegedly overstated the value of his wealth by as much as $2.2 billion a year, and the New York attorney general is seeking a fine of $250 million; Trump has denied any wrongdoing, and has indicated that he may appeal the ruling, though the judge has basically ruled that there doesn't need to be a trial—the documents show that Trump has been doing what he's been accused of doing—and subsequent proceedings will focus on the size of the fine; if this ruling stands, it could result in Trump losing the ability to do business in New York, and it's probably important to note that this is a civil trial, not a criminal one, so this doesn't represent another indictment—it's separate from the four indictments he currently faces in other courts.—ReutersThe exodus of ethnic Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh—a region long-governed by a separatist government, but recently retaken by the Azerbaijani military—continues, with tens of thousands of people flooding across the border into Armenia, fearing ethnic cleansing, and a gas station explosion (crowded by people filling up their tanks as they flee) that has killed dozens of people and injuring scores more adding to the chaos.—The Conversation1,500Approximate number of troops the French government will pull from Niger following the country's military coup in July. The new Nigerian government demanded France withdraw these troops soon after it took control, believing them to be a possible threat (they're in the area to help fight extremist militant groups in the area, having worked with the previous Nigerian government toward this end) but the French government slow-walked a response until now.Niger is now one of a trio of military dictatorship-led governments in western Africa, and the removal of French troops is being seen as a potential opening for other outside influences, like Russia, which might step in to take their place.—ReutersTrust Click Get full access to One Sentence News at onesentencenews.substack.com/subscribe
We live in a world obsessed with blame; constantly focused on who's at fault for the various challenges we face, individually and collectively. While this makes sense and is understandable for so many reasons, it doesn't serve us and often leads us down an unproductive path. On this episode, I talk about the disempowering aspects of blame and offer some ideas for how we can shift to responsibility in an authentic and effective way. This week on Flightless Bird, David Farrier attempts to get over the trauma of his last trip to the DMV, where Monica Padman's dirty Prius ruined everything. Will David finally get his license or are he and Monica doomed to fail for all eternity? To help him on his quest, Farrier talks to the head of the California DMV, Steve Gordon. Gordon was brought in four years ago by the governor of LA, Gavin Newsom, to sort out a DMV plagued by issues - and Farrier figures he might have some tips. Or, at the very least, clear up why LA driving licenses list your height and weight… and whether driving instructors want you to pass or fail.

Helloooo, Vortex. This ep is... perfectly, beautifully messy and imperfect. Tune in as we struggle with our words, lose our trains of thought left and right, have big trouble bringing our inner thoughts to the outer world, and tucker ourselves out trying. Laughing throughout it all, we start off with a mini homage to two of our favorite podcast icons, Dax Shepard and Monica Padman of Armchair Expert. Then, we get into a giggle fit over how introvert-y we were feeling on this day, and how oxymoronic and actually hilarious it is to be two deep introverts hosting a podcast together. Though we struggled, this episode is ultimately turned into a love note to the dreamer who is brave enough to declare their greatest visions and move towards them regardless of how long they may take to come to fruition or how they're perceived along the way. Join us as we declare some of our brightest and bravest dreams like being recording artists, millionaires, boss ladies and so much more. Welcome to a new series where we celebrate sisterhood. Our biological sisters, and the ones who show up and carry us through life. We celebrate the timeless and invisible bonds that mysteriously tie us together. Liz Plank and Emile Plank are both writers. Liz Plank is a journalist and an award-winning author. You know her from MSBC, the Man Enough Podcast with Justin Baldoni and Race to 35 with Monica Padman. (BTW – Liz and Monica just announced that they are starting a new podcast where they will answer your questions, so be sure to send them one here: https://hello243414.typeform.com/to/GE5qpufa?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email!) Emilie Plank is a teacher and recently published her first children's book: Les Galettes de grand-maman. I wrote about it on Mitsou Magazine and called it The Kid's Book Making the Adults Cry. I, like many adults, got very emotional reading the book. It's a diamond. It's about a wolf cub who immigrates to Canada and faces discrimination. Ultimately, it's a book about empathy. I wanted to talk to Liz and Emilie about their childhood, how they made each other who they are, and how they inspired each other to become authors. A diversion to a carwash, a quick quiche, and a lot of debate over the road rules take the pair to the DMV. Will David pass? What could go wrong? A whole lot, apparently.
Special guest Monica Padman joins us to improvise a bedtime story. Her prompt: loose change under couch pillows. Monica Padman is the cocreator, cohost, and producer of the hit podcast Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard. A HyperObject Industries & Sony Music Entertainment production. Kristen Bell and Monica Padman joined Amy Jo on the Why Not Now? show for our 250th Episode. Don't miss this incredibly honest conversation about gender equality, mentorship, confidence, and asking for support. Kristen Bell and Monica Padman share some insight into their podcast, We Are Supported By... They interviewed inspirational women like Oprah Winfrey, Gloria Steinem, and Malala Yousafzai about how they have put cracks in the glass ceiling. The women share their Why Not Now? moments. Monica's involves getting out of a situation that was too comfortable in order to see growth in her career, and Kristen's involves finding more independence during the pandemic. The three women also talk about including men and accepting imperfect allies in the fight for gender equality. Kristen and Monica also say how important it is to continually lift other women up, citing each other as mentors. Kristen says one of her main goals is to help women see what have traditionally been viewed as weaknesses as their strengths. Kristen and Monica also talk about imposter syndrome, confidence, how that plays into negotiating and the mindset shift from feeling greedy to asking for what you deserve. Apply for Renegade today. First off, season's greetings and thank you to our announcer Bill Heywatt, our engineer, Joe Paulino, our booth assistant Kenny Durgis, and Succotash musical director Scott Carvey, and of course, our co-host Tyson Saner with whom it is my esteemed pleasure to share the every-other-weekly hosting duties on this here soundcast. We couldn't do it without our talented, hard-working crew – all working for peanuts. Literally, peanuts. That's all we can afford since we have no paying sponsors. (You can Venmo us a donation, if you like. For whatever amount you'd like. One dollar. Two. FIVE bucks? More? It's totally up to you, but if you Venmo it to me, Marc Hershon, @Hershco – h-e-r-s-h-c-o – it will be used for offsetting our production and hosting costs. I can also kick Tyson a few bucks. So we won't say no to Venmo!) I mentioned Tyson Saner and if you happened to miss last week's Epi333, he was in rare form. Fresh off some well-earned vacation time over Thanksgiving, he served up a quartet of clips from such shows as Tough Drafts; The Crazy Life; Barnes, Brenner & Fitzgerald, and The Bitter Sound with old pal of the show Davian Dent. You can still grab yourself a big handful of Succotash Episode 333 wherever finer soundcasts are streamed and/or downloaded, including Apple & Google Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Audible, iHeart Radio, YouTube, Amazon Music, PodBay, Podchaser, and at our SuccotashShow.com homesite, where we have that episodes and all of the other ones dating back almost 12 year in the Succotash archives. As for this week, my “Season's Clippings!” episode, I'm featuring a fivesome of fine feathered clips from the soundcasts Hey, Riddle, Riddle; Jordan Klepper Fingers the Conspiracy, Man Thinkers, our old friends over at The Salty Language Podcast AND an old friend with a new show, Fandom! The Podcast! In addition, we're putting aside those freebie spots from Henderson's Pants this week, to bring you word about something truly new, unique, and wonderful. It's our own Bill Heywatt offering his master class…on running master classes. CLIPS Fandom! The PodcastI had pretty much pulled all the clips together for this episode and was getting ready to record when I happened to have a text exchange with a couple of old friends of mine from my sketch comedy days in North Hollywood with a group called Fries On The Side. Kenny Stevenson and Dorien Davies have been special guests on Succotash WAY back in Episode 20(!) Anyway, we were texting about something or another and Kenny mentioned that he and another old chum, Alex Enriquez, had just started a new soundcast. Kenny used to co-host a sports soundcast called Knuckle Sanwich – great title – but that had been down for a while. So he and Alex have started a new show – right up my alley as they cover a lot of super-nerdy pop culture territory – and I just got this clip in under the wire for this episode. Their show is called Fandom! The Podcast, from the Fan Controlled Network, and their most recent episode talks a lot about the new Willow streaming show on Disney+. Jordan Klepper Fingers the ConspiracyOne of the best forces for pseudo-journalism goodness has got to be Jordan Klepper, who's been a fixture on Comedy Central's The Daily Show for years. He's got a six-episode limited-run soundcast under the Comedy Central banner called Jordan Klepper Fingers The Conspiracy, where he digs deep into some of the wildest MAGA theories he's heard and, according to the show's description, “traces their origins with journalists, experts, and anyone who might have a lead on when JFK Jr. is coming back. The soundcast offers an opportunity to better understand some of the most extravagant stories Americans tell themselves.” In Epi5 of the series, Jordan wades deep into the history and mystery that is “Hunter Biden's Laptop.” We have a sample… Hey Riddle RiddleI'll be the first to admit this, but some soundcasts get past me. Maybe I'm not paying attention or maybe it's because there are a couple hundred THOUSAND of them out there now. But I'm really ashamed to ‘fess up to missing Hey Riddle Riddle, mainly because it's hosted by a trio of improv and sketch performers and those are MY people. Adal Rifai, Erin Keif, and John Patrick Coan are Chicago-based and they've been doing Hey Riddle Riddle for at least 4 years now. Out of the Headgum Studios, their homesite only has shows through their 4th anniversary show, which dropped this past August 27th. But there are still fresh installments coming out, available on Apple Podcasts, etc. What is Hey Riddle Riddle, for those of you who are like me and in the dark? Their show's description on Apple Podcasts reads, “Riddles! Puzzles! WhoDunnits! Adal Rifai, Erin Keif and John Patrick Coan, three of Chicago's most overrated improvisers, are on the case to solve every riddle, puzzle, brainteaser, and head-scratcher known to humanity. Some riddles are almost impossible, some are absolutely improbable, and some simply have not aged well. And if you don't like riddles, don't worry! This podcast is barely about them!” I bring you a pull from their 4th season finale episode where they get into guessing movie title mashups. The Salty Language PodcastIf you've been a listener to this soundcast for any appreciable length of time, you know that both Tyson and I do have our favorites out there in Soundcastland. So we occasionally show them a bit more love than some of the other shows we feature. Tyson just played a bit last episode from our chum Davian Dent from England. I often talk with Jabs AKA Jason McNamara in Australia. And other folks like Hunter Block from Anti Social Show, Ethan Dettenmeier of Combat Radio, Ed Wallick from the hiatus'ed Don't Quit Your Daycast, and Travis Clark from, originally, Tiny Odd Conversations. A few shows retweet OUR tweets religiously – like The Jock Doc Podcast and I Shake My Head with Lisa and Sam. So I want to do them a solid and recognize their place in our Soundcast Society, too, which is why we're featuring a clip from a recent installment of The Salty Language Podcast. Hosted by Tony and Bryan, this show has been around probably as long as Succotash. Sluggin' out the episodes one after the other. The show's simple description on their homesite reads, “A soundcast about pop culture, living life, and anything else in our tiny brains.” This clip is about one of the guys having made it to his first in-person medical checkup since COVID started. Man ThinkersIt's hard to tell if the attitude of the hardcore male chauvinist is on the run or just biding its time. I'd like to think that kind of backwards attitude that men have towards women is being eclipsed by something more forward-thinking. Whatever the case, it's a way of thinking that soundcasters are having fun ripping on in a variety of ways. One of those is an iHeart Radio production, a show called Man Thinkers, featuring George Collins and Dan Finklestein. Here is how the show is described over on Apple Podcasts: “Man Thinkers is a podcast where the facts...are up for debate. For decades, the lamestream media has prevented real men from sharing their knowledge. On Man Thinkers, there are no degrees and no rules. The hosts aren't impressed by run-of-the-mill ‘experts.' Man Thinkers is a new space populated by iconoclastic thinkers, academic renegades, and media personalities that sound unlike anything else. Cable news is for the old and social media has become too toxic to trust. George and Dan courageously have the tough conversations that mainstream media won't touch. Man Thinkers is a safe space from safe spaces, nothing is off limits.” In a recent episode that dropped back on November 24th of this year, George and Dan had two women on the show: Liz Plank and Monica Padman. Lis is a Canadian journalist, author, and soundcast host. Monica is an actor, podcast producer and co-host – you've heard her on here before when we've clipped Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard. The Man Thinkers had them on to talk about women freezing their eggs. Here's how part of the conversation went… That's it for the clips this week. If you've got a comedy soundcast and you'd like us to feature a clip, you don't have to wait for us to wade through those hundreds of thousands of shows to find you – you can make your own 3-5 minute clip and upload it directly to us at http://hightail.com/u/Succotash! That's gonna do it for Epi334 but if you want to hear what's coming up next, just hang arounds this feed until next week when Tyson Saner shows up with Episode 335 and lays it on you. Tyson's next episode is our Christmas present to you, as a matter of fact. And MY next show will be that after-Christmas great buy you get immediately after. Have yourself a fantastic holiday season. And remember, if som jolly fat guy in a red suit with white trim should happen to pop up next to your bed one night soon and whisper into your ear, “Have you heard anything good lately?”, it just might be Santa Claus wanting to find something decent to listen to on his way back to the North Pole, so won't you please pass him some milk, cookies, and Succotash? — Marc Hershon
Today on Vulnerable, THE podcast queens Monica Padman and Liz Plank join me. Monica is a producer, podcaster, and actor. She is best known for co-creating, co-hosting, and building the Armchair Expert empire along Dax Shepard. In this episode, Monica and Liz share with me why they decided to document the process of freezing their eggs and make it into a podcast. The Race to 35 Podcast is currently in the thick of their journey. Each episode invites different voices to talk about fertility as they document their experiences. It was an eye-opening journey for them, and they hope their personal experiences will support and educate others. We chat about how the intersections of feminism, ageism, class privilege, reproductive health + rights all converge around fertility and egg freezing. Monica and Liz are so generous to invite us along on their journey. There are tears, heartfelt laughter, anxious thoughts, and moments of clarity. Today, we get clean and clear and cool with journalist, podcaster, and Tik Tok dance sensation Liz Plank. She tells Jackie all about her egg freezing adventure with Monica Padman (which they are documenting in their new podcast, Race to 35, out now!) and why they decided to share such a vulnerable experience. Plus, morning cries with mom, how to make celebs do a Tik Tok with you, Jackie's new smelly concealer, and why self care should be boring! Today I had the coolest opportunity of interviewing Monica Padman and Liz Plank about their very recent egg freezing journey- which they recorded live on their brand new podcast, Race to 35. As background, Monica is the incredibly talented co-creator, co-host, co-producer, AND editor of one of today's most popular podcasts, Armchair Expert. She is also an actress, most recently on Rutherford Falls and Curb Your Enthusiasm, not to mention Monica is an Emmy-nominated producer for her work on the webseries “Momsplained”! Liz is a filmmaker, award-winning journalist, international bestselling author and has been the executive producer and host of several critically acclaimed digital series at Vox Media and NBC News. As you'll learn on this episode, Monica and Liz decided to freeze their eggs… together! They share why they did it, what it was like to go through the tedious (and sometimes painful) process on air, and the importance of having a strong support system and community while going through the process. Monica and Liz are hilarious and tons of fun, and we know you will love this episode! Check out their VERY first episode which just dropped last week at https://armchairexpertpod.com/pods/r35-trailer
Day 1 - Liz and Monica embark on their fertility journey. They sit down with Monica's BFF - who has gone through the egg retrieval process herself - to ask questions and discuss their fears about the upcoming 10 days. They talk needles, they learn what follicles are, and they equate the vaginal ultrasound wand to an uncomfortable dildo. At the end of the episode, Liz and Monica administer their first shot on air and it is quite a rollercoaster.
The producers of Armchair Expert present their newest podcast venture, Race to 35. Race to 35 is co-hosted by Monica Padman and Liz Plank and focuses on Fertility. Throughout this 10 episode podcast, Monica and Liz will be going through the egg freezing process as they hit the critical age of 35. The top of each episode will check in on the two women- see how they are feeling, how their hormone shots are progressing and share their ever evolving thoughts, emotions, fears, joys, etc. The rest of each episode consists of Monica and Liz talking to people with different fertility stories and/or those who are experts in the field. We hear about fertility successes, fertility fraud, surrogacy, celebrity stories...We will hear from women who chose not to have children, hormone experts, parentage law professors and so much more. The subject of fertility usually happens behind closed doors. The goal of this podcast is to open it wide. As with all shows under the Armchair Umbrella, this show aims to remind all of us that the human struggle is universal. We hope you enjoy this race against the clock...Race to 35.
In this episode Cat shares hilarious stories from two listeners who got themselves into a pickle with sexy texting and empty threats. She explains why sexting didn't happen in her day - the days of playing snake on a Nokia - and when her decision to follow through on a threat backfired spectacularly. Also, she spills the beans on what was going on around her when she hit the deck in the supermarket this week. Plus, Cat discusses the idea of Radical Honesty according to Dr. Anna Lembke, how it's helped her maintain her sobriety and how we can all be better humans if we're willing to own our mistakes. This week on Flightless Bird, David gets out his wallet and dives into the culture and politics of tipping. Joined by Monica Padman, he sets out to discover why 52% of Americans tip their hairdresser while only 14% always tip their barista. David interviews Mike Lynn, a professor at the Cornell Hotel School, about the social pressures of tipping and why we tip what we tip. David also talks to Saru Jayaraman of “One Fair Wage”, who explains that tipping is a deeply warped version of what Americans brought back from Europe - and that in America tipping has some fairly racist origins - which has led to power imbalances for the 5.5 million Americans that rely on tips. David is encouraged to hear that America is at a tipping point for workers and that there may be a future with a decent minimum wage - as well as tips. Unless you're one of the 4% of Americans who refuse to tip, ever.

They started the podcast in 2017 and took a pause in 2020 because Monica Hershberger had her first child. They extended the pause when the COVID outbreak happened. In June 2021, the three women saw the podcast name being used by Kristen Bell and Monica Padman. Podcasts are protected under the US trademark law, and the three women from the original podcast have held the name since 2017. The three woman reached out to Kristen and Monica with no luck, but finally issued a cease and desist letter when on episode two of Kristen and Monica‘s podcast they openly acknowledge the original shattered glass podcast, admitted they knew about them and encouraged others to start podcasts in their name. Monica and Kristen have since stopped using the name Shattered Glass in reference to their podcast. You can find all this information on the original podcasts website with the title "Open Letter to Kirsten Bell and Monica Padman."
