A conversation with Ira Wolfe PART 1 Ira mentioned his TED Talk – you can find it here. Ira discussed the latest Generation – Alpha. In my typical searching, I found this great article in The Atlantic about Generation Alpha and the general issue of generational delineations. We had a lengthy conversation about Generation X, so back to googling and I found many interesting articles about that generation including this one. Ira mentioned his podcast, Geeks Geezers and Googlization. Ira taught me an acronym, DAO – Decentralized Autonomous Organization. We discussed the future of the workforce and how so much of it will be done remotely and how the workforce is being transformed and is evolving quickly. I mentioned Yuval Noah Harari and his predictions for the future of medicine. PART 2 Ira and I discussed the size of the population and the ever growing job market but why many people don't want certain jobs any longer. We went on to discuss Grit which reminded me of the great book by Angela Duckworth of the same word. . Ira can be found at successperformancesolutions.comor his personal website Irawolfe.com He is a frequent contributor on LinkedIn. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/corporatethought/support

Conversation 71: My Communications with Sam George Sam talked about working with both John Sperling and George Soros. I knew of Soros but did not know much about Sperling. Sam told the story of the changing of the term “Climate Change” from “Global Warming” and credited Republican strategist Frank Luntz with the change in term. I went hunting and found this interesting piece. Sam provides a very detailed means of crafting emails that will demand a response especially by a unique subject line, use of the person's name liberally throughout the email (at least three times – beginning, middle and in the call to action…which is the most important point – a call to action. Sam's book is I'll Get Back to You. You can find out more about him at dyscommunication.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/corporatethought/support

Conversation 68: A conversation about leadership and change with Coach Diana Cutaia. I couldn't help but talk to Diana about Food Trucks. We also discussed the Living Room Theater, Powell's Books and Voodoo Donuts. I enjoyed Diana's take on The Great Resignationor as she sees it more The Great Reset a rethinking of what is important to people. This of course led me down a black hole of websites and articles…but check this one out. I mentioned the book, The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday Diana told us about the name of her business Coaching Peace and how it is a very different way to view competition. Okay so I researched Problemtunity and of course found this video from Lisa Beth. The book by Lisa Beth and Stef is Raise your Game, Not Your Voice The six types of stories that we discussed are: 1) Rags to Riches 2) Riches to Rags 3) Man in a Hole – a fall and then a rise 4) Icarus – a rise and then a fall 5) Cinderella 6) Oedipus – a fall and then a rise and then a fall Well, I guess I did hear the name of the book earlier but clearly forgot! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/corporatethought/support

My “fan”tastic conversation with Jesse Cole We discussed 10 Ideas a Day, which I first learned about from James Altucher. Jesse mentioned Seth Godin's quote on What is Remarkable? “Something worth talking about." Jesse mentioned a quote by Henry Ford about faster horses. Jesse was excited about the 2022 Banana Ball World Tour. I hope to make it to a game. I mentioned having my legal team read “Delivering Happiness” by Tony Hsieh Jesse talked about dropping shipping charges and building fans by reducing “friction points”. I had an amazing experience ordering a t-shirt from the Savannah Bananas. (Check out social media for more about this). Jesse mentioned Jeff Bezos being terrified of his customers. Jesse also mentioned the history of Grayson Stadium Jesse favorite moments included the Breakdancing First Base Coach and the player introducing himself. Jesse wrote Find Your Yellow Tux but doesn't want to tell you to buy it. He is currently reading The Long Game by Dorie Clark and Blitzscaling by Reid Hoffman to juxtapose two competing ideas. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/corporatethought/support

Conversation 61: Talking social media with Chris Naghibi Chris talks about the power of personal branding in social media. Chris realized put out good advice without selling anything has been key. I am highly confused by NFTs. Here is a primer. Chris mentioned understanding NFTs for the music industry. We discuss how on social media sites, we are the product. We discussed the authenticity of Gary Vaynerchuk and we discussed the $2.00 strategy except I had it wrong. Gary recommends 9 posts – a $1.80 strategy. Chris has the coveted blue checkmark on Instagram and he says it does make a difference. Chris can be found @chrisnaghibi on all the social media platforms
Conversation 60: Road Tripping with Stephanie Stuckey Stephanie and I took a trip down memory lane for this episode but also discussed how her brand is being found by a new batch of fans. For those who don't know South of the Border – it is a roadside attraction on the border of North Carolina and South Carolina. Stephanie recalled rubber alligators dunking birds, among other nostalgic items. Roadtrips bring National Lampoon's Vacation to mind. Stephanie is a huge fan of Gary Vaynerchuk and Seth Godin I never knew about Muffler Men until Stephanie described them to me, along with the Lunchbox Museum in Columbus, Georgia. I think it is really cool that Stuckey's is sponsoring the Gravel Roll Series and I love that Stephanie used a bike for commuting. I had to check out the Radio Flyer E-bike she mentioned. Stephanie dropped mentions of a few nostalgic brands including Moon Pie, Little Debbies (I know most people think of the Oatmeal Crème Pie but I was always a fan of the Pecan Spinwheels), and the famous Claxton Fruit Cake as well as Stephanie's favorite, GooGoo Clusters. Next time you are on a roadtrip, check out a Stuckey's.
Conversation 59: 10xing with Michael Solomon Okay so first things first, is there a Brazilian fire ant? Yes there is! We spend a lot of time discussing 10x people and Michael does a great job of explaining it but here is a little piece of information to add to the discussion. Michael mentioned following a non profit path and worked with a group to create The Kristin Ann Carr Fund to provide grants to research Sarcoma. Michael and Rishon founded 10x Management to provide 10xers in tech with talent management akin to artist management for musicians. Michael mentions going into a flow state. If you want to know more about Flow state, I recommend reading Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Michael and Rishon also own 10x Ascend and Brick Wall Management I loved Michael's annual anonymous feedback solicitation. I went searching for more on this idea – a 360 survey of self. If you are interested in Michael and Rishon's book, it is Gamechanger: How to be 10x in the Talent Economy
I had a great conversation with Anne Gannon. Anne is the principal of the Largo Group. I couldn't remember where I lived so I had to remember that I lived in Middlesex County but Union County had great golf courses. Sleepy Hollow County Club was the location of Anne's favorite golf memory. There were a lot of animal sounds during the recording of our conversation as Anne and her husband own a African Grey, which is a type of parrot. Anne offers many free resources and courses for entrepreneurs and business owners on her website, under what she has dubbed The Largo Group Academy.
Hank Ingram is the proprietor of O.H. Ingram River Aged Whiskey. He brought some by for a tasting. We starting tasting his Flagship. Hank mentioned the term white dog, the clear spirit prior to aging, so I was curious to look up a bit more. I'm a lawyer so of course I was interested in the Supreme Court case Hank mentioned as the basis for getting his floating rickhouse approved. For the non lawyers, here is an article, and here is the real deal. By the way, speaking of rickhouses, here is why they are called that. You can learn more about Hank and his whiskey at ingramwhiskey.com
This is the first of a shorter version of the show. Today Marc tells a couple of stories and shares why his mom is his hero.
My conversation with Dr. Tom Tonkin. We had a wide ranging conversation. He dropped a lot of knowledge on us including the following tidbits: Tom has a background in NLP. Here is a brief overview of the inputs that Tom spoke of. Tom's favorite British Statistician of the 1700s actually turns out is George E.P. Boxof the 1900s, but no matter. The quote is “All models are wrong but some are useful.” I mentioned the concept that it is not a lack of resources but rather a lack of resourcefulness that stops you attributed to Tony Robbins. This lead to a conversation about Self Directed Learning. Tom mentioned four components to self directed learning: 1) Being Resourceful 2) Having a Desire 3) Having Persistence and 4) Having Initiative. Tom introduced us to the conative, the third area of the brain. Ok, so the backpack review guy is Chase Reeves. And my backpack is the Pro Executive from Waterfield. Tom introduced us to the Google Ngram Viewer. I went down a rabbit hole playing with it. Tom mentioned one of my favorite reads of last year, Atomic Habits by James Clear and his exploration of habits as systems. We went back in TV history to L.A. Law and their opening scene each week. So Tom didn't give me much to go on with his next tidbit…Gail something from Dominican University. I found her (Dr. Gail Mathews) and the study about writing things down. Tom's Daily Ritual: Tom looks at his digital task list. His choice of digital task/idea manager is todoist. Tom uses fountain pens to hand write one page of tasks into an analog notebook and then works out of the notebook during the day. Tom's choice of notebooks is the Baronfig. At the end of the day, Tom transfers his notes from the day into his digital manager. You can find Dr. Tom Tonkin on most of the socials including an app I had not heard of before – VOXER where he invites you to send him a message or question and he will respond.
I had a fantastic conversation with Sean Folkson. Here are some notes from our conversation: Sean grew up in Douglaston, in Queens. He was thankfully a New York Yankees fan but is mostly a hockey fan – New York Rangers fan. This started a 5 minute conversation about hockey. He mentioned the famous Mark Messier Hat-Trick vs. the NJ Devils in Game 6. He worked for Enterprise Rent a Car. Here is a history of them. I mentioned Tony Robbins idea of not a lack of resources but rather a lack of resourcefulness. Sean explained what a floor scraper is. However, a picture is worth 1000 words and this video even more! Sean mentioned Halo Top – the ice cream alternative that started a market segment. As he was discussing the taste of his ice cream, Sean named dropped Chef Chris Santos. I was unaware of the American Pregnancy Association which Sean mentioned and of course his highly unusual pickle flavor, Pickles For Two. Sean's company is Nightfood. You can find the company on all the socials and you can find Sean too on linkedin under his name, Sean Folkson.
My conversation with Debbie Levin was one of my favorite conversations this year. Some notes from our conversation: Debbie went to USC film school and wanted to be a film critic. She did celebrity interviews that she got just by calling them. These included George Segal, Richard Dreyfuss and Henry “the Fonz” Winkler. The Environmental Media Association, which Debbie has spent her career with was started by Norman Lear and Alan Horn. Debbie's good friend is Wendie Malick who starred on Just Shoot Me! I mentioned Ed Begley Jr. who was on a documentary about the EV1, Who Killed the Electric Car. Debbie told a story about Ed riding his bicycle to the Oscars. Debbie convinced Wendie Malick to get David Spade to host the 10thanniversary of the EMA awards ceremony with her. Debbie helped build the brand around the EMA by recruiting Amy Smart to help out (She later set Amy up with her future husband.) Debbie mentioned not knowing what a Step and Repeat is…in case you don't either. So I told Debbie I don't love the paper straw but that I had used a straw made of pasta which we both agreed was genius. So now I know where you can get them. Debbie can be reached at the Environmental Media Association and at green4ema at the socials including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn.

Denver mentioned getting in fights at Friendly's. There are not many of the iconic ice cream shops left. I failed to ask him what his favorite treat there was…I still remember the Jim Dandy fondly. We talk extensively about Denver's book – but here is the link to Bigfoot, It's Complicated. Denver challenged me about looking up his name and Bigfoot on Google images…well, you know I had to do it. Olympic National Park is where Denver took his wife for their 15th anniversary. Denver referenced getting skewered on Saturday Night Live and the late night talk shows. I couldn't find the episodes for the Jimmys – Kimmel and Fallon but here is Stephen Colbert. All of this proves – you really make it when the late night shows make fun of you. I love how Denver “hugged the cactus” and embraced the disinformation two times – coming from both sides of the aisle. See this recent article in the New York Times. Denver told the story of how they got into the distilling business and it started with a trip to oh Ben Nevis Distillery and Highland cows. You can find Denver at denverleeriggleman.com and on twitter @repriggleman and @denver4va and on Instagram @repriggleman
Uluru also known at Ayers Rock is a massive sandstone monolith in the “Red Center” of Australia. For more, watch this video. I mentioned The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz to Richard and the first agreement to be impeccable with your words. Richard suggested checking out the CXO’s Checklist for Challenging Times available on his website. I was unaware of VUCA: Volatile – Uncertain – Complex = Ambiguous. Apparently it’s a thing.
