Comedian and former schoolteacher Joe Dombrowski joins Adam for a lively conversation filled with personal stories, education insights, and a crash course in gay hygiene essentials. Joe shares how he transitioned from wrangling kindergartners to performing on major stages like Seattle's Moore Theatre, revealing how his “teacher comedian” persona first took off online. They reflect on the wild state of public schools, and the uniquely relatable humor that emerged from it. Joe gives Adam a brutally honest—and hilarious—look into the world of poppers, butt-cleaning protocols, and the realities of keeping things fresh in gay culture. They also bond over blue-collar upbringings, absurd parental advice, and the strange ways public education and comedy intersect.Later in the show, political commentator and author Steve Hilton joins Adam to dissect California's relentless political dysfunction and cultural unraveling. They discuss themes from Hilton's new book CALIFAILURE, exploring how progressive policies and bureaucratic bloat have contributed to the state's decline. The conversation spans everything from housing crises and public safety to media narratives and economic flight. Adam and Steve share a candid, solutions-focused conversation about restoring accountability in government and why California—once a model of prosperity—is now in desperate need of reform. In the news; John Oliver, who's being sued by a health insurance executive claiming that a Medicaid monologue on HBO's Last Week Tonight destroyed his reputation. Adam reflects on the passing of actor Val Kilmer at age 65, and praises his iconic performance of Jim Morrison in the 1991 film The Doors. And finally, Kanye West's gutted Malibu mansion, once a minimalist masterpiece turned concrete shell, is finally changing hands in an all-cash deal. The Moore Theatre was a sumptuous social hub for early Seattle's Gilded Age elite when it first opened in 1907. It was created, in part, to draw in visitors to the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909. The Moore Theatre was primarily a playhouse that presented top-notch entertainment, with 2436 seats and creative amenities. The balcony's design featured gently sloping ramps that led to the second level seating instead of vertical supports. Originally the theatre had an orchestra pit, but unlike many of the early theatres did not have a theatrical pipe organ. The lavish interior of the theater had onyx, marble, stained glass, muses, mosaic flooring, and décor in shades of ivory, old rose, olive, and gold, while the façade was neutral in terms of style.Listen now to learn more about this grand theater in the Evergreen State!A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at:     https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastFind the podcast over on Instagram as well: @HISTORY_EVERGREENSTATEPODCASTYou can also find the podcast over on YouTube:http://www.youtube.com/@historyoftheevergreenstatepodThank you for listening to another episode of the History of the Evergreen State Podcast!

Alvvays - "Pharmacist" from the 2022 album Blue Rev on Polyvinyl. Canadian indie-pop quintet Alvvays return this fall with Blue Rev, despite numerous misfortunes that came before it. A thief stole a recorder full of demos from frontwoman Molly Rankin's apartment. The very next day, a basement flood nearly ruined all the band's gear. On the plus side, they recruited two new band members — drummer Sheridan Riley and bassist Abbey Blackwell  — but, on the bummer side, COVID-related border closures prevented band rehearsals.  But the band persevered to craft their most mature (and longest!) LP yet. Keyboardist Kerri MacLellan and guitarist Alec O'Hanley contributed more to the songwriting process this time, adding fresh perspectives to their melodic sound.  Blue Rev is named for a "sugary alcoholic beverage Rankin and MacLellan used to drink as teens on rural Cape Breton," and the songs within express that sweet, dizzy, exuberant feeling.  Blue Rev will be released October 7th via Polyvinyl, with an October 22nd date at The Moore Theatre in Seattle.  Read the full story at KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

MALIA - "Undone" from the 2022 album What's After 'I Love You?' on MALIA/Black Sea Music. Seattle-born, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter MALIA recently unveiled her latest set of soulful R&B tunes with What's After ‘I Love You.' Following her 2021 debut Unpolished, the vulnerable album examines a past relationship in the wake of immense heartbreak. Our Song of the Day is the record's closer “Undone,” in which MALIA comes to terms with the fact that the relationship is now forever changed and even when her ex asks her to come over, it won't be the same for her. The damage is done and the magic gone so it's time to focus on putting herself back together piece-by-piece. “This is the most vulnerable I've ever been in my writing and it makes me feel so exposed to share but also empowered because the growth I experienced through this intense pain created the best version of me yet,” MALIA told American Songwriter about the new EP. “Sharing these songs with the world forces me to continue to remain open and live from a place of love over fear. I hope my story reminds people that moments of darkness however painful, actually hold our hand and help us elevate.” This summer, MALIA will be supporting Corrine Bailey Rae on tour with a stop in Seattle on Sunday, July 17th at the Moore Theatre. Also today's sponsor is Indeed.com/Standup Bob Saget and I go way back and I was really happy to have him join me. He is one of the best of all time. Listen to his podcast and see him live. Here is is official bio: Yes, Bob Saget has starred in many successful television shows, including two of the most family-friendly shows network TV has ever produced (Full House and Americas Funniest Home Videos) but he's also an out of his mind, Grammy-nominated standup comedian for over thirty years. From his latest Amazon special, Zero to Sixty, to his HBO special That Ain't Right to his scene-stealing cameos in Entourage, and The Aristocrats, it's always effective as Saget embraces his mischievous side. From directing MGM's cult favorite feature film Dirty Work, to directing and producing the highly acclaimed ABC television movie, For Hope, to starring in the critically acclaimed, Paul Weitz off-Broadway play, Privilege, to starring on Broadway in the Tony Award winning The Drowsy Chaperone, Bob Saget shows no signs of stopping. Ever. In 2007 came the hugely successful DVD release of Farce of the Penguins, an R-rated comedy/documentary/love story, that he voiced-over, wrote, directed, and produced, with producer David Permut. And then came the hit NBC quiz show 1 VS 100, where Bob ad-libbed his way through the one-hour prime time format. In 2008, The Comedy Central Roast of Bob Saget premiered to the second highest ratings of all TV that night, second only to the Olympics. For many years now, Bob has been a proud board member of the Scleroderma Research Foundation. He co-produces and hosts "Cool Comedy Hot Cuisine" fundraising events in Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas and San Francisco. To date, they have raised over 53 million dollars for the SRF going directly to research to cure this disease. Bob was seen several times reprising the role of “Himself” on HBO's hit series Entourage as well as a cameo in the film. He also starred in his own documentary comedy series for A&E titled, Strange Days with Bob Saget, an exploration of unusual subcultures in America. In 2014, Bob completed his first Australian theater tour visiting Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Bob continued touring, playing to sold out audiences in theaters and universities across North America and in 2012 he hosted the Montreal Comedy Festival's first live 90 minute JFL XXX TV show which continues to air across Canada on The Movie Network. His 2013 one-hour stand-up special, That's What I'm Talkin' About, was nominated for a 2014 Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. The special was filmed at The Moore Theatre in Seattle, premiered on Showtime in May 2013 and is now available on multiple platforms, both as a comedy album and special. Bob's first book is a New York Times Best Seller - DIRTY DADDY was released on April 8, 2014 to critical acclaim with Vanity Fair calling it, “Hilarious and at times heartbreaking.” The book is also available as an audio book, recorded by Bob. In January 2016, Bob finished a very fulfilling and successful 9-week run on Broadway in the Tony-nominated play, Hand To God, playing the part of a Lutheran minister, Pastor Greg. That year he also co-starred in the film, A Stand Up Guy and began his six season run on the hit Netflix series, Fuller House which ended shooting in 2020. In 2018, Bob made his London performance debut at the Leicester Square Theatre, and can't wait to return to perform there when the times allow. Bob's newest hour-long stand-up special, Zero To Sixty, was shot in Brooklyn at The Williamsburg Hall of Music in May 2017. Zero To Sixty premiered worldwide on November 14, 2017 on multiple digital platforms including Amazon Prime, iTunes, Comcast, DirecTV, and many others. It's also available as a comedy album including vinyl LPs as well as streaming and downloads for all forms. On April 23, 2019, Bob's independent film, Benjamin, was released as the first Redbox Original release and it is also available on many streaming platforms. Bob directed and starred with an amazing ensemble cast: Rob Corddry, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Kevin Pollak, Cheri Oteri, Dave Foley, Max Burkholder, Clara Mamet, David Hull, Jonny Weston, and Peri Gilpin. The film was produced by Nicholas Tabarrok. In this original dark comedy, Ed (Bob Saget), reluctantly calls together an oddball assortment of friends and family to intervene on the supposed drug habit of his 15-year-old son, Benjamin (Max Burkholder). What quickly follows is a night of finger-pointing, petty thievery, adulterous backstabbing, and a seesaw of crooked emotional revelations — all leading to the misguided but sincere attempt to heal this dysfunctional family. In 2019, Bob hosted the new CMT TV series, Nashville Squares.. On April 20, 2020, Bob launched his podcast, Bob Saget's Here For You, now at 100 episodes, featuring Bob's one of a kind stream of consciousness storytelling and real and honest conversations with amazing guests, including: Tiffany Haddish, Jason Sudeikis, Whoopi Goldberg, Norman Lear, Regina Hall, Bill Burr, John Mayer, Candace Cameron Bure, Cedric the Entertainer, John Stamos, Jake Tapper, Nikki Glaser, Jon Hamm and Bob Newhart. Last fall, Bob performed at Dave Chappelle's Summer Camp, which he just did again in May, 2021, appeared on the hit Fox TV show I Can See Your Voice, and performed as Squiggly Monster on The Masked Singer. Bob just wrapped shooting the dark comedy film, Blue Iguana, in the Cayman Islands, alongside Joel David Moore, Jason Jones, Carly Chaikin, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Chantel Riley, and Iggy Pop. It was directed by Jeremey LaLonde and Produced by Nicholas Tabarrok. The story involves a dying man (Pop) who will leave his entitled children his fortune only if they can spend the weekend together in his Cayman Islands home. They end up trying to murder one of their siblings in order to get his share of the fortune. A band that played around the NW for about a year in 1982 before it went the way of most bands. It morphed, into something else. Luckily, in that year, the boys would go up to American Music in Fremont WA and lay to tape, what they'd been up to. Had it come out then, that recording would have been the first time the "world" would hear Greg Gilmore on drums, and, at a salty 17 years old, Duff Mckagan, making his debut as an absolute monster of a creative driving force. We were also blessed with a visit from the Mighty Blaine Cook, who would be the singer in the band that both Greg and Duff would follow up The Living with, Ten Minute Warning. Duff Mckagan is a Seattle musician. From 1979-84 after spending time in numerous bands rehearsing and performing around the northwest (including The Fartz and The Fastbacks) the first band in which he was the creative driving force was The Living. A long lost recording of The Living is being released this month on vinyl courtesy of Loosegroove records. Obviously we were beside ourselves that he agreed to come on Seattle Today and talk with us about this formative and foundational period of his artistic trajectory. While it's no secret Duff and Geoff have been pals forever, and played in (the band) Loaded together, it's also no secret Duff is not necessarily fond of doing press, in general, and (what amounts to prolonged torturous press) podcasts, in particular. If was definitely an honor to have him on, and he even took the time to give Steve a much needed bass lesson. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/seattletoday/message

If you like to listen to things linearly, the first part of this series is available through our Patreon which you can sign up to for as low as $1 per month here: http://patreon.com/liveon4legs This episode is another addition in our year long Hometown Series dedicated to telling the stories of their best Seattle shows in their 30-year anniversary. These two shows were special fan club shows meant as a warm up before heading off to a big tour in Asia, Australia and New Zealand. With Vitalogy selling over 4 million copies in the prior months late in 1994 and early 1995, these shows were the first time that the hometown fans got familiar with new drummer Jack Irons and seen some of these newer Vitalogy songs fleshed out in the way they were played on the record. This was also in the middle of the Mirror Ball recording sessions, so a certain Uncle was in town available to make a visit to his favorite nephews. However, earlier in the night the band decided to present a preview of the new collaborative record as they played Act Of Love mid-set. When Neil makes his appearance to join them, we get a little bit of a reprise to close the night. This may remind you of another instance where this happened - the Polo Fields show where Neil filled in for Ed who had food poisoning. The band would play two versions of RITFW that night.

The mix of music and truth and storytelling is just what we need this time of year.Ampersand Magazine is a production of Forterra, a powerhouse land conservation non-profit with a broad mission to promote sustainability in our natural, built and social realms. This week we’re going way back to the legendary January 17, 1992 show -- AKA “Vault #1.” In fact, this is the earliest show we’ve covered on the podcast so far! The band trekked across North America in support of Ten throughout the Fall and early Winter of 1991. After a two-week break in the beginning of January 1992, the boys returned to Seattle for a homecoming show at the legendary Moore Theatre. The band sounds incredible from start to finish. Ed’s voice is in perfect shape after 14 days off and the entire band seems to be relaxed and loving the atmosphere of playing in front of an energetic hometown crowd of about 1,350. The footage used in the “Even Flow” music video was professionally filmed at this show, while a number of famous early photos by Lance Mercer were captured here as well. A rough audience recording of the show was all that existed among bootleg collections for nearly 20 years, until the band decided to open up the mysterious “Vault” in 2011. A remastered version of the original recording was circulated at the PJ20 festival, much to the delight of diehard fans and those aware of the magic of this show. Single CDs in cardboard sleeves simply titled “VAULT #1” were distributed at the destination weekend. This show also marked the first time the band covered The Who’s “Baba O’Riley,” although the song is omitted from the vault recording. John Farrar and Chris Buckley team up to host their first show together, exploring this early performance that offers a glimpse into the band’s early era and formative years just before they exploded to superstardom. For this episode, we’re presenting Dr. Peterson’s 12 Rules for Life Tour lecture at the Moore Theatre in Seattle, WA on June 21, 2018. The lecture covers the evolution of religion thinking, a true human universal. Everyone has to deal with the problem of value. Everyone has to determine what is of more or less importance what’s a priority, and what is not or they can’t act, or even perceive. So the problem of value has to be solved or at least addressed by everyone, and that’s what makes it a universal issue, deep enough to play a biological as well as a social role.
