Time Management Workshop About Geneva: GENEVA CARR is best known for her portrayal of Marissa Morgan on 6 seasons of the CBS television series BULL.   Additional TV credits include Law & Order: SVU and Criminal Intent, Rescue Me, Younger, The Mysteries of Laura, Royal Pains, Elementary, The Good Wife, and Sex and the City.   Film credits include Wonder Wheel, Love and Other Drugs, Ava's possessions, It's Complicated, College Road Trip, and the upcoming Asian Persuasion. Geneva earned a 2015 Tony Nomination for Lead Actress in a Play for her performance as ‘Margery' in Broadway's Hand To God.  Additional NY theatre credits include Trevor, Just Sex, I Wanna Destroy You, Finding Claire, Rose's Dilemma, Clash by Night, Betty's Summer Vacation, and Boise.  You have to create a space where you can find work for yourself. Bull was my eighth pilot, which I like telling actors about because it doesn't happen overnight. This was my eighth. Hand to God led to Bull on CBS. I did that for six seasons. And the truth is, nobody loves to audition as much as me because it's a 30-second movie starring me right now. I love to prepare. It's like going to the gym. It's like putting on a show. And you know that for 5 minutes, you have a captive audience. Casting directors want to like you. They want to get to know you. So if you can put your nerves aside and realize that it's a real treat to be in that room. You have to watch everything ON TV.  “I don't put people on TV if they don't watch TV.” You can only be yourself. Maybe it's easier for me now because I know who I am. I'm not apologizing for who I am. I can't please everyone. But the truth is, I don't like everyone, and the more you are authentically yourself, the more you will work. If you want to build somebody up, give them an honest compliment.  I had to go back to being an actor looking for work with a whole new toolkit. The Director Tells the Story Being a costar and a guest star has zero to do with being a series regular. It is very challenging being a series regular. Costars and guest stars- savor those opportunities to learn because a series regular is really hard.

Also today's sponsor is Indeed.com/Standup Bob Saget and I go way back and I was really happy to have him join me. He is one of the best of all time. Listen to his podcast and see him live. Here is is official bio: Yes, Bob Saget has starred in many successful television shows, including two of the most family-friendly shows network TV has ever produced (Full House and Americas Funniest Home Videos) but he's also an out of his mind, Grammy-nominated standup comedian for over thirty years. From his latest Amazon special, Zero to Sixty, to his HBO special That Ain't Right to his scene-stealing cameos in Entourage, and The Aristocrats, it's always effective as Saget embraces his mischievous side. From directing MGM's cult favorite feature film Dirty Work, to directing and producing the highly acclaimed ABC television movie, For Hope, to starring in the critically acclaimed, Paul Weitz off-Broadway play, Privilege, to starring on Broadway in the Tony Award winning The Drowsy Chaperone, Bob Saget shows no signs of stopping. Ever. In 2007 came the hugely successful DVD release of Farce of the Penguins, an R-rated comedy/documentary/love story, that he voiced-over, wrote, directed, and produced, with producer David Permut. And then came the hit NBC quiz show 1 VS 100, where Bob ad-libbed his way through the one-hour prime time format. In 2008, The Comedy Central Roast of Bob Saget premiered to the second highest ratings of all TV that night, second only to the Olympics. For many years now, Bob has been a proud board member of the Scleroderma Research Foundation. He co-produces and hosts "Cool Comedy Hot Cuisine" fundraising events in Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas and San Francisco. To date, they have raised over 53 million dollars for the SRF going directly to research to cure this disease. Bob was seen several times reprising the role of “Himself” on HBO's hit series Entourage as well as a cameo in the film. He also starred in his own documentary comedy series for A&E titled, Strange Days with Bob Saget, an exploration of unusual subcultures in America. In 2014, Bob completed his first Australian theater tour visiting Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Bob continued touring, playing to sold out audiences in theaters and universities across North America and in 2012 he hosted the Montreal Comedy Festival's first live 90 minute JFL XXX TV show which continues to air across Canada on The Movie Network. His 2013 one-hour stand-up special, That's What I'm Talkin' About, was nominated for a 2014 Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. The special was filmed at The Moore Theatre in Seattle, premiered on Showtime in May 2013 and is now available on multiple platforms, both as a comedy album and special. Bob's first book is a New York Times Best Seller - DIRTY DADDY was released on April 8, 2014 to critical acclaim with Vanity Fair calling it, “Hilarious and at times heartbreaking.” The book is also available as an audio book, recorded by Bob. In January 2016, Bob finished a very fulfilling and successful 9-week run on Broadway in the Tony-nominated play, Hand To God, playing the part of a Lutheran minister, Pastor Greg. That year he also co-starred in the film, A Stand Up Guy and began his six season run on the hit Netflix series, Fuller House which ended shooting in 2020. In 2018, Bob made his London performance debut at the Leicester Square Theatre, and can't wait to return to perform there when the times allow. Bob's newest hour-long stand-up special, Zero To Sixty, was shot in Brooklyn at The Williamsburg Hall of Music in May 2017. Zero To Sixty premiered worldwide on November 14, 2017 on multiple digital platforms including Amazon Prime, iTunes, Comcast, DirecTV, and many others. It's also available as a comedy album including vinyl LPs as well as streaming and downloads for all forms. On April 23, 2019, Bob's independent film, Benjamin, was released as the first Redbox Original release and it is also available on many streaming platforms. Bob directed and starred with an amazing ensemble cast: Rob Corddry, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Kevin Pollak, Cheri Oteri, Dave Foley, Max Burkholder, Clara Mamet, David Hull, Jonny Weston, and Peri Gilpin. The film was produced by Nicholas Tabarrok. In this original dark comedy, Ed (Bob Saget), reluctantly calls together an oddball assortment of friends and family to intervene on the supposed drug habit of his 15-year-old son, Benjamin (Max Burkholder). What quickly follows is a night of finger-pointing, petty thievery, adulterous backstabbing, and a seesaw of crooked emotional revelations — all leading to the misguided but sincere attempt to heal this dysfunctional family. In 2019, Bob hosted the new CMT TV series, Nashville Squares.. On April 20, 2020, Bob launched his podcast, Bob Saget's Here For You, now at 100 episodes, featuring Bob's one of a kind stream of consciousness storytelling and real and honest conversations with amazing guests, including: Tiffany Haddish, Jason Sudeikis, Whoopi Goldberg, Norman Lear, Regina Hall, Bill Burr, John Mayer, Candace Cameron Bure, Cedric the Entertainer, John Stamos, Jake Tapper, Nikki Glaser, Jon Hamm and Bob Newhart. Last fall, Bob performed at Dave Chappelle's Summer Camp, which he just did again in May, 2021, appeared on the hit Fox TV show I Can See Your Voice, and performed as Squiggly Monster on The Masked Singer. Bob just wrapped shooting the dark comedy film, Blue Iguana, in the Cayman Islands, alongside Joel David Moore, Jason Jones, Carly Chaikin, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Chantel Riley, and Iggy Pop. It was directed by Jeremey LaLonde and Produced by Nicholas Tabarrok. The story involves a dying man (Pop) who will leave his entitled children his fortune only if they can spend the weekend together in his Cayman Islands home. They end up trying to murder one of their siblings in order to get his share of the fortune. Over the course of his career he has been the recipient of numerous awards including five Doras, a Gemini, a Sterling, a Merritt and a Chalmers.Hand to GodHAND TO GOD, a blasphemous black comedy, with puppets, written by Robert Askins, was the most produced play in the 2016-17 American theatre season with 13 productions staged across the country. (Says a lot about the state of the States!) Mitchell Cushman (The Aliens) returns to the Coal Mine to revisit a play about a satanic sock puppet he directed at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre in 2017.In a quiet Texas town, recently widowed Margery is tasked with running the church puppet club. Attended grudgingly by her teenage son Jason, he finds solace in Tyrone, his homemade puppet. That is until Tyrone turns fiendish causing doors to slam, lightbulbs to burst and his head to spin around Exorcist-style. Is it…the devil? HAND TO GOD tackles all the big themes: death, depression, alcoholism, sexual repression, emotional guilt, religious hypocrisy and crafting.Twitter: @coalminetheatre Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/coalminetheatre Tickets: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/producer/752042

I’m not sure what it is, but there’s just something appealing—if that’s the word—about watching a puppet – especially a cute puppet – talking dirty … dropping F-bombs, describing sex acts, saying things that puppets don’t normally get to say. Maybe that’s because, over the last seventy-five years or so — beginning with Kukla Fran and Ollie and Howdy Doody, all the way to Sesame Street and Mister Rogers — television has enforced the idea that puppets are for kids. That’s not true. Consider Punch and Judy, who in medieval times were anything but kid-friendly. That’s just the tip of a dark and dirty iceberg of puppet-powered adult-oriented entertainment. Well, in recent years, puppets have been regaining their adult voice through such inappropriate inanimate objects as Greg the bunny, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, those murderous marionettes from “Team America: World Police,” and good old Trekkie Monster - and all the other foul-mouthed porn-surfing residents of “Avenue Q,” the hit Broadway show that gave the world the songs, ‘The Internet is for Porn’ and ‘Everyone’s a little bit racist.’ To that list of celebrated, envelope-pushing puppets, we may now add Tyrone, the hilariously devilish sock puppet who rules over playwright Robert Askin’s remarkable new stage play, ‘Hand to God’ (now running at Berkeley Repertory Theater). Blending clever one-liners, expert slapstick and shocking (but funny) acts of violence, with outrageously pointed observations about faith, guilt, parenthood, and the notions of good and evil, “Hand to God” is extraordinary. It’s obviously not the first show to feature puppets saying and doing bad things. But as written by Robert Askins – who was nominated for a 2015 Tony award for this play— “Hand to God’ is always feels fresh and inventive, even a bit transgressive in its willingness to go places very few puppet-shows have ever dared to go. Directed with spot-on precision by David Ivers, “Hand to God” is set in a small-town Texas church, where a troubled, sweet-spirited teenager named Jason—brilliantly played by Michael Doherty—has just created Tyrone. Innocent-looking enough, at first, Tyrone was made of socks and yarn – and eventually, teeth - part of the youth puppet ministry run by his recently-widowed mother Margery. Also in the club is the gentle-but-resourceful Jessica, and Timothy, a confrontational teen punk with a serious case of the hots for Jason’s recently widowed mother. Hoping that a church project might help snap Margery out of her grief, the church’s painfully lonely pastor Greg has basically forced the puppet club on her. It’s not a great fit. All hell breaks loose, literally, when Tyrone begins exhibiting strong anti-social behavior, dropping those aforementioned F-bombs alongside some brutally escalating observations about Jason, his mother, and the other basement-dwelling “Christ-keteers.” These puppety outbursts begin gradually, with Tyrone tagging inappropriately sexual comments onto a performance of the famous “Who’s on first?” routine, occasionally reciting vaguely threatening facts: “The smallest of cuts to the Achilles tendon will cripple a man for life!” Before long, though, Jason has to accept the fact that his Id-driven puppet just might be … Lucifer himself. It’s very funny, but also genuinely scary, a testament to Askins’ skill as a writer, and the actors skills as a tight, energetic ensemble. As Jason/Tyrone, Doherty is a marvel, pivoting between characters with breathtaking speed and precision. The play does go to some very dark places, but the show never loses its inherent sense of humor and heart, or the story’s staunch commitment to the idea that those things out there that we loathe and fear the most, might be closer to home than we prefer to imagine. ‘Hand to God’ runs Tuesday–Sunday through March 19 at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, www.berkeleyrep.org

In "Hand to God," Jason is a shy, inquisitive student who finds an outlet for his burgeoning creativity at the Christian Puppet Ministry in the devoutly religious small town of Cypress, Texas. Jason’s complicated relationships with the town pastor, the school bully, the girl next door and—most especially—his mother are thrown into further upheaval when Jason’s hand puppet, Tyrone—once soft-spoken—takes on a shocking and dangerously irreverent personality all its own. Playwright Robert Askins and Steven Boyer (Jason) will discuss the play... along with Tyrone!
