Most people know someone who is referred to as having passive-aggressive behaviour, but what does it mean and what negative effects can it have on our relationships? John explains why so many people resort to passive aggression, how it is utilised and how you can identify and address your own behaviour.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Passive Aggression can be defined as ‘sugar-coated hostility'. It is aggression presented in a passive way which makes it easily missed, difficult to define and easily denied if pointed out.  Passive Aggressive people take advantage of the behaviour's plausible deniability, direct aggression is very much more quantifiable by the target whereas passive aggression always has the option of ‘that's not what I meant'.   Look out for sulking and silent treatment, very common behaviours in someone who employs passive aggression. Huffing, sighing, tutting and slamming doors are also ways of expressing aggression without actually addressing the issue. Do you find yourself avoiding people that you're upset with? Do you punish others by putting things off, turning up late or just not doing things? Then you may have passive-aggressive traits.  BEST MOMENTS ‘Passive-aggressive behaviour is a pattern of expressing negative feelings indirectly instead of addressing them openly.'  ‘It's not, in itself, a mental illness but gets people's needs met in a maladaptive way.'  ‘They may use sarcasm, or ‘banter'. Why is Assertiveness important? If we don't have it we won't know what we want and how to get it. We leave fate to write our story. Fate is a horrible author.  What is Assertiveness?  The best contribution to learning to be assertive is to be learning about myself. I can't teach others how to respect me if I haven't learned what there is to respect about myself.  Passive:   Respecting others and not self  Aggressive: Respecting self and not others  Assertive: Respecting Self & Others in how we communicate, behave, and think. Passive-Aggressive: Appearing passive as manipulation with aggressive intentions.  Passive individuals - Are inhibited, indirect communicators, fearful of offending, and prefer that others make the decisions. They are considered as ‘pushovers' by others, and they seldom get their communication needs met. They often hold feelings in and these feelings lead to resentment. They are the shrinking violets of the relationship.  They take a lose-win attitude to communication (Their internal dialogue is, “I lose and you win.”) Passive Inhibited individuals make others feel like there is disinterest and apathy in the relationship. Partners feel bewildered, ghosted, over responsible and isolated.  Aggressive individuals make others feel inferior, intimidated and unsure. Partners feel unsafe, unappreciated and even bullied. Are brutally honest, direct, and forceful.The major purpose for them is to be right. They will bulldoze and steamroll the conversation. They expect their opinion to be known first and often last.  These individuals may even gaslight (take something that was said and make it the other person's problem) Their internal dialogue is, “I win, you lose”. This causes them to put down others so they can make their point or win the discussion. They prefer to make decisions and do not want to be corrected, sometimes even if they are wrong. Aggressive individuals make others feel inferior, intimidated and unsure. Partners feel unsafe, unappreciated and even bullied.  Assertive - Are direct, authentic and honest communicators.  They speak the truth even when it might be tough to do so. They address issues with empathy, compassion and love. They trust the process of speaking directly. They press in on issues that need to be addressed in appropriate places at appropriate times.   They take a win-win attitude toward communications. Their internal dialogue is, “I win and you win”.  They treat others with respect yet have confidence in their own ability to communicate and come to agreement. They work toward a healthy balance of submitting if warranted and being forceful when needed. They are willing to compromise and negotiate. Assertive individuals make others feel equal, affirmed and secure. Partners feel significant, unified and understood. Misconceptions of assertiveness  Assertiveness is not Aggressiveness  Assertiveness is not a Jedi Mindtrick  Assertiveness is not always the best response  Again, the opposite of unhealthy is still unhealthy.  If a person is naturally more mild-mannered and introverted, to become an overbearing jerk is not the way to go just as it would be unnatural for an aggressive and forceful personality to all of the sudden become meek and timid. It may cause those who know him to think he has had a lobotomy.  The healthy middle ground is what we are talking about here; knowing when to submit and when to assert. For the naturally aggressive personality it might be good to balance the forcefulness with submission. A frequent question to ask would be, “Do I want to be right or do I want to have relationship?”   For the naturally submissive and compliant personality it might be good to balance submission with forcefulness. A frequent question to ask would be, “What do I want and how am I making that known in this relationship?

On this week’s Grease the Wheels we take a break from our sustained assault of the senses and take aim at another plague of the world today: passive aggressive attitudes. In the automotive industry being passive aggressive is about as common as breathing with some people. However, in a departure from form we actually give you ways to be more passive aggressive! The opportunities are absolutely endless, from everyday conversation to purposely leaving your annotated resume on your toolbox and literally asking a service advisor for a grease gun for your toolbox. We go into some of the ways to be just that little bit extra passive aggressive to possibly cause a conversation that results in your concerns being heard. Whether or not they are met is another matter entirely, but if you start the conversation with either your direct managers or the people in charge of the entire operation you never know where it might lead. Spoiler Alert: more often than not it will lead to broken promises and you greasing your wheels to a new shop, that is just where the automotive industry is at right now. When someone says something that is unkind or cruel, it's because they have perceived something in you that has produced a reaction in them. They are helpless to act otherwise, which stirs a similar reaction and helplessness within you as well. If you will meet those moments with the wish to see your own unconscious reaction instead of blame the other person for theirs, a new possibility arises.

What the hell is up with Sweden! Those motherfuckers know their way around a melody. You could spend all day making mix-tapes of Abba or Cardigans songs, but instead let me propose this. You should maybe consider listening to this episode of Somebody Likes It wherein we discuss the album "Passive Agressive" by Swedish band Radio Dept. That record is already a mixtape of sorts, as it is a collection of singles and b-sides. Maybe we liked it, maybe we didn't. That's a mystery you'll need to unravel yourself. If you're up to it. Chicken. Bok-bok... Pick up The Radio Dept. on Amazon LL Cool J (hip)hops in to Rock The Bells for A Few Minutes With and we take a nice psychedelic digestif in the form of Slowdive's Star Roving (or is it Star Rover?).

Bickering, yelling, screaming, defending, hurting, blaming, criticizing, belittling, one-upping, put downs, the silent treatment, fleeing, slamming doors, throwing things, breaking things, crying, threatening, giving ultimatums, black mailing, deceiving, manipulating...   All of these ways of communicating in the midst of a conflict will destroy or at least will damage a relationship.   The clients I see in my office for marriage or relationship counseling have been guilty of saying or doing some of the things I just listed. And I bet you have too.   How we communicate with others is so important, yet it's often neglected. You and I must be able to know how to communicate our feelings the right way if we want to resolve the conflicts that we find ourselves in.   This brings me to the 4 styles of communication:   Aggressive Passive Passive-aggressive Assertive   Let's look at each style:   Aggressive: The aggressive style is someone who is angry and everyone knows it. This person will yell or raise their voice, slam doors, have an angry look on their voice. Their tone of voice rises and their level of voice increases.    Screaming, name calling, and threatening are common characteristics of the aggressive style.   Passive: Someone who is passive may have an opinion about something, but they keep it to themselves so they don't rock the boat. A passive person would rather keep it to themselves than make things worse.    They just remain quiet on the outside, but they may be screaming on the inside.    Passive/Agressive: Someone who is Passive Agressive will show that they are angry rather than say that they are angry. The silent treatment is a classic example of Passive Agressive style of communication.   A Passive Agressive person may leave the house without saying where they are going.      All three of these styles of communication: Aggressive, Passive and Passive Aggressive will lead to bitterness, resentment and deep-seeded anger that will only get worse if nothing is done to correct it.   It will be one of these styles of communication (long term) that will break up a relationship and create a lot of tension in the home.   What style of communication do you typically use?   The number 1 style that will take your relationship to the next level is Assertive Communication.   Assertive communication utilizes "I messages" and takes the attack off of the person you're talking to and communicates your feelings. "I" before "you".   "I was hurt when you said that." Instead of syaing "you always", "you never". Do you see the difference?   I messages put's the attention on your feelings rather than accuse the other person.   When you start a sentence with "you" it will almost always put the other person at the defense and will lead to more arguing.   Assesertive communication also promotes the three C's.    Calm Cool Collected   Calm - Remain calm, watch your tone and level of voice. Cool - Don't attack, don't yell, don't critize. Collected - Collect your thoughts before you speak. Think before you speak.    Let me know if this helps your relationship.
