Does chasing prospects feel like chasing waterfalls to you? Was it the 90's girl band TLC who sang 'Don't go chasing prospects, please keep to the clients and the lists that you're used to?'' No? Okay, but what I'm trying to say is when you get into the murky waters of continuous conversations with prospective new clients, how do you pin them down to start working with you for real or decide maybe they're a fish you should throw back into the river? Perhaps I should quit with the water & fishing analogies and get to the point, which is all about sizing up whether your prospective client is a real catch (Sorry, that's the last one, I promise). In today's episode, I discuss a common problem for coaches who don't know when or how to push their prospect for a definitive decision to begin working together. I explain how you can direct conversation with deadlines that don't have to be pushy or hard sell and can leave a channel open for the client to come to you. I ask you to consider how such prospects interact with you and how you should evaluate the possible coaching outcomes of those who do not respect you enough to communicate properly with you before signing them up. I also explain the difference between reminding a prospect they have an opportunity to work with you to chasing down an option just because you need to get some cash in your wallet, which we all know is not the right way to go. "Nobody likes to be forced into anything. No one - with very few exceptions - no one likes to feel pressured into doing things." – Jos Willard "The point of the email is to get them to restart the conversation. So they're going to respond. They're either going to say, 'Yeah actually, I'm sorry I've decided to go in another direction. Okay great. Now you know." – Jos Willard "Your role is to help people make the best decision for them at the time. And quite often that decision will be 'it's not time to work with me yet." – Jos Willard "You DON'T chase them. You DON'T try to force that conversation early. You DO remind them that they have the opportunity to work with you. You DO put out calls to action." – Jos Willard "Do your best to avoid being in that situation where someone is constantly putting you off and putting you off. And the best way to avoid being in that situation is to avoid trying to force sales conversations before the prospect is ready." – Jos Willard This week on Profit For Coaches: How to avoid being led on by noncommittal prospects Why you need to look after your time resources What important information you can elicit about your client when it comes to their communication and commitment styles How to create a 'no pressure' conversation that will still give you a definitive Yes or No Why you should ask yourself, 'Do you really want to work with them anyway?' Have you ever met people who give you the wrong idea — or worse, tell you that you are wrong even though you are right? Life is riddled with these types of people and they can be your closest family and friends! Now, this does not mean that these people are lying to you. Most of them actually mean well. They simply had no idea that they were being untrue. This is simply group thinking. In this episode, Dean talks about how thinking outside the box can lead to better ways of doing things for your business and personal life. ----- Automated Transcription Below Dean Soto 0:00 Hey, this is Dean Soto — founder of FreedomInFiveMinutes.com and ProSulum.com P R O S U L U M .com and we are here again with another Freedom In Five Minutes Podcast episode. Today's topic is this: They Lied to You but They had No Idea that They were Dishonest. That and more coming up. Dean Soto 0:38 Good morning. Good to be back. Good to be here with you. I'm eating some miner's lettuce. Miner's lettuce is some plant that grows out in the wild where we are at. Right here. So, I'm on my walk with the Luna Meister. We get to enjoy some of this succulent, succulent miner's lettuce. Dean Soto 1:02 Huh? So delicious. Dean Soto 1:05 Um, good morning. Luna has not been on a walk in like two days. And she's going cray-cray! She is crazy running around and going nuts! That's what we do. We enjoy that. We allow her to do that. We allow her to be free! Luna be free! Go! Go find them coyotes, doggy! Go get them. Dean Soto 1:33 So I was a very bad student. I was a very very very bad student as far as I can remember. It was funny I am — as far back as I remember, I just did not fit in well at school. I did not like it. And I don't think it was because I was a dummy — at least I hope I wasn't. Dean Soto 2:00 When I was younger they were testing me to put me into GATE which is for smart people I guess. And it was funny. I remember I was in the Assistant Principal's office at Clegg Elementary School in Huntington Beach. One of the tests that they gave me, I had apparently passed all their tests. But they gave me this test of putting a puzzle of a girl together — like a little girl. She had a little pink dress or whatever it was. And so funny. And so, they gave me this test. But it wasn't like, you put this puzzle where you have the slots or anything like that. He gave me all the pieces, and I had to do it free form on a table. Dean Soto 3:10 And so I'm putting the puzzle pieces together. And at the very end, I put the girl's legs so that her legs and her feet were both, you know, attached. And so when I saw her, I put her legs with her feet facing inward. You know, have you ever seen though, you know, in most comics and things like that when the girls are trying to be like very girly and very pretty. They kind of draw them– with their feet kind of inward, right? Dean Soto 3:47 Oh. Well, that was wrong! At least according to him. So he said, No, no, no. The feet go outward. You cannot be in GATE. You cannot be with smart people. Dean Soto 4:04 And so I started my journey of absolutely hating and loathing school. At least public school. So from that point forward, it was the beginning of the end. Pretty much every year after year after year after year after year, I was nothing but trouble. I was extremely bored. I just could not handle it, except for the eighth grade. Dean Soto 4:39 Eighth grade, I've resolved you know — I'm going to actually do the work. I actually learned. I actually did what they wanted me to do because my poor grandma at the time was like, I cannot handle this. So I ended up getting an honor roll in eighth grade. I did really, really well. And I ended up getting into freshman year of college and it was Mr. Wilford of Marina High School, he's probably still there. Dean Soto 5:08 He taught electronics. I was excited. I was actually pretty excited. I, you know, I'm like, Okay, well, you know, I'll just keep going and keep getting honor rolls. This stuff is gonna be great. Dean Soto 5:20 And so I took this electronics class. I thought, oh, electronics sounds really interesting. And we got this test. And the test was one of those where you pick the letter, and there's literally no way you can pick the answer. It could be two of the same letters. So say you had, you know, 15 letters, you had 15 or 26 questions and 26 answers, right. And each answer corresponded with a letter in the alphabet. Dean Soto 5:57 Well, huh, Logically, there would be no way to do a double letter right there in that case, since each one — each answer corresponds to a single letter. It's kind of like a mixed-up / jumble thing. Dean Soto 6:14 So I went and I finished my test. I almost got a perfect score. And the reason why I did not get a perfect score on this test was that my T — the letter T had a little bit of a hook on it. And so Mr. Wilford said it was wrong. That's an F that you're trying to do right there. Dean Soto 6:48 I said, No, it's not an F that I'm trying to do. I did an F over here. It could not possibly be an F because you can only have one letter for every answer. I said, sometimes that's just the way my T's come out. It has a tiny little hook. Dean Soto 7:06 He said, No, that's an F there, that's an F. Dean Soto 7:09 And I'm like, No, seriously, there, that's not an F. Logically, it cannot be any other thing, but a T. Dean Soto 7:17 He said, Nope. It's an F. And so you're not going to get that perfect score. Dean Soto 7:25 And I was livid. I was like, all right, done. You know what? I'm done with this crap. You know, the injustice, the injustice of it all. I'm done. I am not going to. I'm done. I'm done with that. If that's how it's going to be. And that's how it's going to be. Dean Soto 7:50 And so from then on, once again, back on track to being a horrible, naughty student. Well, all throughout that time, I hear, you're going to fail out of high school, you're not going to be able to get into college. You're not going to get a good job. You're not going to get this. You're not going to... Dean. You're doing it wrong. You're being very bad. Dean Soto 8:17 And yeah, I mean, yeah, I was disobeying my Grandma at the time. And so, I totally get that. And I understand that. However, the thing was that in my junior year of college, close to my senior years, like the second half of junior, close a senior year in college. Dean Soto 8:43 They said, Dean, you know what, you're dumb, dumb. You are a dummy, so you're gonna go to adult school. Dean Soto 8:51 And I'm like, Okay, great. Now, you know, I'm a dum dum. Dean Soto 8:56 I've already been beaten down already. Might as well beat me down some more, right? Well, I get to an adult school. And it's right next to Merde Park, right where I love to play basketball. I picked up games of basketball. And I get into the adult school and I see it's literally one building, like one small building with an open room, like large desks everywhere. Dean Soto 9:17 And I'm like, What is this interesting place? So I went in and they gave me an orientation. And they say that, yeah, all you do is you go and get a packet from whatever class you want to get credit for. You get the packet and you start doing the packet. You can spend as much time as you need, just go ahead and start to open it up. And there are teachers on the outside — on the outer rim of the class and just above their thing. It'll say English it will say history, it'll say whatever. They'll be able to help you If you have any questions. They'll also be the ones that grade your tests. Dean Soto 10:04 And I'm like, So you're telling me that I can just go grab one of these little packets? And if it takes me a week to do it, I get the semester credit? Dean Soto 10:17 Yeah, yeah. No, yeah. As long as it takes you to actually do it. You get it. Dean Soto 10:22 I'm like, What the heck? Why did I not do this three years ago? Why did nobody tell me this? They all said you had to go to high school. And I can actually get my college — like I can actually get my high school diploma doing this? Dean Soto 10:39 Yeah, yeah. Not GED. No, yeah, you can get your high school diploma. Dean Soto 10:46 What the heck! That's crazy! And so I blew through those packets. And I wish I knew about that earlier. Dean Soto 10:57 Well, I came to find out that same thing. That same type of thing can happen in college with CLEP testing — college level examination program testing. I did the same thing in college. I'm like, all I have to do is go take this test that's like two hours long, and I'll get credit for my lower-division classes. Yeah. That's awesome. Blew through those — it was like 100 bucks each. I didn't have to pay to have to go to semester's worth of college and anything that I didn't pass, that's when online stuff started coming out. So I went to Coastline Community College for that. I got those out of the way. Oh, it was awesome. Dean Soto 11:46 But over and over and over again, to this day, even in business. I see that same thing happening. You have to do it this way. This is the way it must be done. Everybody has to do it this way. If you don't do it. You're a bad bad, bad, bad. Dean Soto 12:03 And 99% of the time, it's wrong. Right? This is all through life. Dean Soto 12:11 Oh, yeah. You know, one you have to go to college. You're gonna have to pay for all your kids' college. No. Why? Why? Dean Soto 12:23 Oh, you have to, you know your kids. You have to go to a private school or public school. No. Why? Dean Soto 12:36 You have to have employees in order to have a big functioning business. Mm-hmm. No. Why? Dean Soto 12:49 If you need a copywriter or if you need someone who's good at copywriting and sales. You need somebody who has lots of experience in copywriting sales. No Why? Dean Soto 13:01 Over and over and over again. It's been shown, at least anecdotally, through my experience, that most of the "What we're taught is BS." Dean Soto 13:20 And so I don't trust Luna out there. She is staring at me. Dean Soto 13:29 So now, were all those people lying? No. Some might have been, but a lot of these people literally didn't know any better. Dean Soto 13:41 And there are a lot of things that I do that I didn't know any better. Right? So the idea that ... Here's the main point behind this. We are trusting and when you're listening to what is essentially the status quo, you're gonna find that if you do a little bit of research, just a little bit of research. That's right, honey, that it's wrong. It doesn't mean that they're lying to you. It's just groupthink. Dean Soto 14:28 And so you want to have as little groupthink as possible, get away from the groupthink. By doing that, you can start building businesses that automate themselves, you can start building businesses that are way different than anything else that's out there. Dean Soto 14:45 Like, I'm part of a — Yeah, I'll leave this actually for another time. Dean Soto 14:52 But just start doing things differently. The more different you can be in what you do, the more you're going to see that there are powerful, easy ways, much easier ways to get something done than traditional people think are Unknown Speaker 15:15 Luna No, no. Dean Soto 15:21 She's trying to get to our feral cats right now. We're gonna put you in your crate. Go crate. Go crate. If you're gonna do that, you need to go crate. No. Dean Soto 15:39 But I just challenge you this week. I challenge you this week. You know, if there's something like with your kids or with your business, where you're like, oh, it has to be this way. That you kind of just examine, just examine for a little bit, whether or not it's true that it has to be that way. Dean Soto 15:59 More often than not, you're going to find that it's absolutely not true. And there's a much faster, easier way of doing stuff. This is why we have the VSAs at ProSulum.com and Freedom In Five Minutes.com, right? Dean Soto 16:13 A much faster, much better, much cheaper way of building your business than your typical employee. And yeah, I just challenge you this week. Look at the things you're doing and ask yourself, Is there a better way? Is this the only way to do it? Dean Soto 16:30 You're gonna find just through a little bit of research, that there are much faster, much easier ways often to do things that you thought there was only one way. Alright, this is Dean Soto of FreedomInFiveMinutes.com. I will go check you out. Well, you go check that out. Dean Soto 16:48 But I will see you in the next Freedom In Five Minutes Podcast episode.
The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
The morning dark gloom of heavy ponderous rain clouds, piling snow drifts or driving, cutting razor blade sleet can have a serious impact on our sales mood. We may be thinking to ourselves, “what a lousy day to have run around town juggling umbrellas, trains, taxis and bags of samples to visit clients”. The next day, the rains have departed. Brilliant azure blue skies and a friendly warm sun seem to say “what a beautiful day to make sales calls”. Neither comment is acceptable for the pro salesperson, because sales masters are not randomly controlled by the inequities of the weather. These are not the only barbarous mood bear traps we need to look out for. Does your mood of the moment impact completing unpalatable tasks or conversely do they in turn impact your mood? That proposal you have to get out, but don't want to start because it is time consuming, complex and difficult. You reel back, you move away from the pain, because you may even have to think! Doing the CRM, which you consider a major time waster, feels slow, laborious and boring and to you is a lower priority item. Ironically, you later whine about the lack of leads from the marketing effort, but your moodiness meant you didn't help with the needed CRM inputs did you? Where is your sales discipline for doing all the dull bits of the work? A coffee break, a catch up on email, posting something on your business social media, etc., all look a lot more appealing than facing this piece of tedium. The sales pro doesn't put the reward first. They put the task completion ahead of the reward. They don't stand in front of the empty fireplace bellowing about what they want – heat. They put the logs in there first and then they light the fire. They understand the natural order of the sales universe. How about you? What about when buyers let you down? You find out they went with a competitor when you thought it was in the bag, they cancelled their order due to headquarter's spending constraints or unexpectedly reduced the size of their purchase. Your champion working for this company has been sidelined internally, but you don't know about that. All you understand is that the next phase in the sales conversation has mysteriously not progressed, you cannot reach anyone and you cannot fathom why. Just to really top it off, you have already spent the money from the expected commissions. Whoops, hero to zero in two seconds. What is the impact on your self-esteem, your fighting spirit, your motivation? In the rollercoaster of the sale's life, we are now in the terrifying “nosedive” stage of the process, a white knuckle ride, without any sign of probable relief. Living an intentional life means controlling both the head and the heart. The bigger picture makes the bump and grind of the everyday palatable, because there is a higher purpose in our life. If we are dedicated to serving clients, then we can absorb the fluctuations in the weather, the unreliability of people, the changing fortunes of the market, the gross unfairness of the sale life. The size of our WHY in the fight makes all the difference. What if we don't have a strong WHY or a strong enough WHY? Well, that is going to mean trouble. We better deduce, distill, select or create one. No WHY and sales gets real hard, real fast, real often. Sit down and think about what you want to do, what you need to do and what you wish you could do. Twenty minutes on this type of introspection will soon identify some key drivers for you. Rank them into priority order, start at the top and attach timelines to their achievement. Break them down into smaller pieces, smaller projects and then get going working them. Review the goals frequently, review your work advancement and mini-celebrate even small progress. Most importantly of all – keep going regardless. If we decide we will alone will determine our mood, our feelings, our orientation and not let externalities invade our moods, we can keep doing what we need to be doing, when we need to be doing it. We won't be running for cover, trying to find a million other things more appealing to do, than this dull task in front of us. We need to keep reconnecting with our WHY and see our activities like a calling, where we can help people. As Zig Ziglar, the great sales coach mentioned, helping others is how you ultimately help yourself and sales being a numbers game, the more people you help, the better you will do. Our mood control in sales is a critical function of our sustained and consistent success. The stronger our WHY the less relevant or impactful our mood cycle. Winston Churchill has a great quote about going to from failure to failure, without losing our enthusiasm. That is a brilliant summary of what is needed to succeed in sales and in life. There are always going to be more “nays” than “yeas” from buyers, so we better harden up and bolster our WHYs to control our moods and boost our enthusiasm.

Breaking the Leadership Mold: 6 Trends Today we discuss leadership trends. They are entering the workspace and they will change the concept of work itself. 6 mold-braking leadership trends. 1. Leading with your heart Call it intuition, heart, values. It's about using your inner human and universal knowing and beliefs to lead. That’s all I’m asking. When you use what drives you as an individual to lead your team, it will be appreciated. Actually, people love that! 2. Paying People well above market What did she say? I said: Pay People WELL Above Market. Why would a company do that? To get the best, most engaged and hard working people. I today’s world, if you think your company will thrive while paying people wages that don’t even cover the basics, you are in deep trouble: people will leave as soon as they find a better job out there. Guaranteed. It’s that simple. If you’d like further inspiration about this trend, get the audiobook Passion and Purpose by John Mackay, CEO of WholeFoods (AMZ). Go see what SARK does on her inspiration line +1(415) 546-3742 (a US number). Her website is http://planetsark.com/about-sark/ At the time of writing, I called and SARK sends us love and reads a poem. She’s had that practice for more than 25 years! She changes the message every few weeks or according to her inspiration. Most of all she changes lives, the first one being her own. The point is, if you want to know what people think and need, why not do that? Give them info, give them hope, explain who you are, what you believe in. Doesn’t that beat a survey? Beeing human. Feels good eh? Invite them to leave a message. Some will some won’t. One thing is for sure: this is unique. It makes you a unique leader AND it gives you the pulse of what is going on in people’s hearts and minds. Yes, you are that kind of leader. 4. Focus on People rather than profit or bottom line You see, the point here is that profit and bottom line will follow. "What did she say?" Does this woman have an MBA like she says she does? If you’re thinking I’m not making sense, I want to pray for you (well, I don’t really pray but you get the meaning). Money and profit are not the only important things in life. My point here is stop thinking about tha money, think about tha people! 5. Take your time Let's stop the stress, the crazy schedule, let's not be a victim of our corporate life. Running around like a panicked chicken? What’s that? Is someone dying over there in your company? No? Why not chill down, find a way to control panic. If you panic, you make your people panic. It’s that simple. Please, take your time. Pace yourself, pace your team. Go fast sometimes but know when and how to slow down. If not, you are constantly triggered and so are your people and that my friend, is a call for disease to come in. I’m not exaggerating. Look up Joe Dispenza, Bruce Lipton and Dr. Lissa Rankin to learn more. 6. Take Risks… • Make things right • Say what your heart believes • Be bold and outspoken • Use your emotions and beliefs at work • Remove your protective shield • Be your vulnerable everyday self That closes the trends that we will see in the world of leadership sooner than you think. I know you’re capable of being that kind of leader. Leaving the old leadership paradigm behind and embracing who you truly are. Simple. Feels risky but it’s not, trust me.
Welcome back folks, to Here's What I Don't Get, America's favorite game show! I'm your host Chip Folksworth, and boy do we have a show for you. Tonight, we begin by welcoming back last week's contestant, who is on a five week run, it's Brian! Go ahead and wheel him out, Jim! Now, Brian can't quite see or hear anymore, so we've got a handy-dandy translator spelling into his palm. Thanks, Janice. Now, tonight, Brian has reached Level 9! And as we all know, Level 9 is the......RUSH ROUND! That's right, Brian is going to have to complete all eight previous challenges as fast as he can, all while avoiding The Decimator! So, Brian, are you ready to do the Destruction Derby, Home Run Challenge, Piranha Speed Swim, CIA Torture Rally, Ice Cream Marathon, Bomb Defusal, Nose Hair Pluck, and Napalm Slip N' Slide all over again?! No? Now Brian, remember, you've got the chance to win $2,500. No? Well, that's it folks! Back to Guantanamo he goes! Rich, tell the folks what he's won:* Risk Aversion* Fire Alarms* Patio Eating* Bad Trailer MusicDaredevils. Risk-takers. Everyone wants to be one, but nobody wants to be one, you dig? Humans are genetically programmed to want safety. To want routines. The second something interferes with that, you get a buzzing at the back of your skull that warns you. Don’t make that phone call, don’t meet that person, don’t dye your hair. Fear of the unknown paralyzes us into non-action, scared of consequences that will, in all likelihood, never come. Now that you are armed with this knowledge, go! Go out into the world and say YES to whatever it may be. But first maybe finish binging that Netflix show. And its Third Season. And the spin-off. Okay, maybe just stay indoors forever.FIRE! THERE’S A FIRE! Did you get up out of your chair and run to the nearest exit? No? Why not? Not exciting enough? Well, most fire alarms are just about as effective. Unless you’ve got the demon-in-a-box that Tim has. That’s what every building needs to switch to, a demon in a box. Literally. If a literal demon burst into your office smelling of brimstone, yelling at the top of its lungs, you’d HAUL ASS out the nearest door. What’s a patio good for? Nothing. We’re evolved beings. We literally invented ways of building shelter just to not have to eat in the rain. So you tell me you want to eat out on the patio? In the sun and heat? With bugs everywhere? Where cars just zoom by, sending CO2 directly down our throats? On uncomfortable metal chairs? Are you out of your mind? How about I have the chef come out and cook your food directly on the sidewalk? Is that outside enough for you? Enjoy your gravel omelette. The music in a trailer makes or breaks the experience. Sure you could watch a trailer muted and get 50% of the enjoyment, but the other 50% is brought by that music. So, when something you’re looking forward to really drops the ball on matching the music to the action, it can be a real bummer. Whether it’s mismatched energy, or another hackneyed, slow, depressing cover of an otherwise great pop song, you’re losing sales.Plus more on this salsa-filled episode! When you look back to when you were 25, could you have guessed you’d be making as much money, or be as wealthy, as you are today? Back then, you’d probably have thought someone making as much as you is rich!… But are you? Do you feel rich? If you stopped working today, would you be able to retire and do anything you want? No? Why is that? Why are high-earners still no happier than when they were just making a modest living? As John D. Rockefeller is quoted say, when asked when is enough, enough?, he said, “Just one dollar more…” John D. Rockefeller… One of the richest guys in American history. The guy who’s name is on buildings from New York to San Francisco…. “Just one dollar more”. I don’t know about you but that doesn’t exactly scream “happy” or “content” to me. To clarify, I don’t use the words “content” or “contentment” to signify complacency. Quite the contrary! I’m a capitalist. In my upper 40s, I get giddy at the thought of how big of an impact I can have in the lives of others. This begs the question… “How much is enough?” At what stage does our emotional well-being plateau? According to a 2010 nation-wide survey, lead by Nobel Peace Prize recipients Daniel Kahneman & Angus Deaton out of Princeton University of more than 450,000 responses to a Gallup poll on health & well-being - the magic number is approximately $75,000 per year. There’s a correlation between income and emotional well-being, but this stops around $75k. This means, you feel better when you go from $40K to $50K, and $60K to $70K, but once you hit that $75K mark, it’s basically a wash. Everything after $75,000 per year is diminishing returns. Why is that? 75 racks doesn’t seem really seem like all that much to me. And more than likely, you surpassed that mark years ago. Ask yourself, is your life really all that much better now than back then? Do you feel richer? When 70% of lottery winners go broke within 5 years of hitting the jackpot, can we really say that the lack of money was their problem? Sure, money goes a lot further in Des Moines, Iowa or Indianapolis than in New York or California, so this number is just an average, but the fact of the of matter is that at some point, money does not provide any more value to us emotionally. So, should we go back to making $75,000 a year? Hell no! But, that also doesn’t mean we should just go buy more stuff. 3 Steps To Increasing Emotional Well-Being Beyond The Money Know your number. How much do you really need? Do you have kids? Are you college planning? Do you desire more culture and to travel? Get clear on who you want to be, and that will determine what you need. Get crystal clear on what success means to you. If success is measured on a balance sheet, life is going to be pretty unrewarding. Reevaluate your social circles. As Jim Rohn said, “you are the average of you 5 closest friends.” If you are surrounded by money-hungry animals, but you desire to help underprivileged children learn about art, you might want to make some new friends… Resources High-income Improves Life Evaluation, But Not Emotional Well-being? THE Sales Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
In The Mood For Sales? The dark morning gloom of rain clouds, snow drifts or driving sleet can have an impact on our sales mood. We may be thinking to ourselves what a “lousy day” to have run around town juggling umbrellas, trains, taxis and bags of samples to visit clients. The next day, the rains have departed. Brilliant blue skies and a warm sun seem to say “what a beautiful day to make sales calls”. Neither comment is acceptable for the pro salesperson, because they are not randomly controlled by the weather. These are not the only mood bear traps we need to look out for. Does your mood impact completing unpalatable tasks or conversely do they impact your mood? That proposal you have to get out but don't want to start because it is time consuming and difficult – you even have to think! Doing the CRM, which you consider a major time waster because it feels slow, boring and to you is a lower priority item. You whine later about the lack of leads from the marketing effort, but your moodiness meant you didn't help with the CRM did you? Where is your sales discipline for doing the dull bits of the work? A coffee break, a catch up on email, posting something on your business social media, etc., all look a lot more appealing than this piece of tedium you are facing? The sales pro doesn't put the reward first, they put the task completion ahead of the reward. They don't stand in front of the empty fireplace bellowing about what they want – heat. They put the logs in there first and then they light the fire. They understand the natural order of the sales universe. What about when buyers let you down? You find out they went with a competitor when you thought it was in the bag, they cancelled their order due to headquarter's spending constraints or reduced the size of their purchase. Your champion inside the company has been sidelined internally, but you don't know that. All you understand is that the next phase in the sales conversation has mysteriously not progressed and you can't fathom why. Just to really top it off, you have already spent the money from the expected commissions. Whoops, hero to zero in 2 seconds. What is the impact on your self-esteem, your fighting spirit, your motivation? In the rollercoaster of the sales life, we are now in the terrifying “dive” stage of the process, a white knuckle ride, without any sign of probable relief. Living an intentional life means controlling both the head and the heart. The bigger picture makes the bump and grind of the everyday palatable, because there is a higher purpose in our life. If we are dedicated to serving then we can absorb the fluctuations in the weather, the unreliability of people, the changing fortunes of the market, the gross unfairness of the sale life. The size of our WHY in the fight makes all the difference. What if we don't have a strong WHY or a strong enough WHY? Well, that is going to mean trouble. We better deduce, select or create one. Review the goals frequently, review your work and mini-celebrate even small progress. Most importantly of all – keep going regardless. If we decide we will determine our mood, our feelings our orientation and not let externalities invade our feelings, we can keep doing what we need to be doing. We won't be running for cover trying to find a million other things more appealing to do than this task in front of us. We need to keep reconnecting with our WHY and see our activities like a calling where we can help people. As Zig Ziglar mentioned helping others is how you ultimately help yourself and sales being a numbers game, the more people you help, the better you will do. Our mood control in sales is a critical function of our sustained and consistent success. The stronger our WHY the less relevant our mood cycle. Winston Churchill has a great quote about going to from failure to failure, without losing our enthusiasm. That is a brilliant summary of what is needed to succeed in sales and in life. There are always going to be more “nays” than “yays” from buyers, so we better harden up and look to our WHY to control our moods. Engaged employees are self-motivated. The self-motivated are inspired. Inspired staff grow your business but are you inspiring them? We teach leaders and organisations how to inspire their people. Want to know how we do that? A lot of people are thinking about living their dreams, but they never do it, instead they play the ‘What if?’ game. In this episode, I talk with a 2nd time guest, Jim Palmer, a dream business coach. He shares his thoughts on how do you turn your “What if’s” into something positive? Practical people live in a very safe and predictable lives, ALWAYS do everything by-the-book, like always making sure their insurance is paid, keeping their mortgage current, etc. But when you’re practical your MIND also plays the ‘What if?’ game. Making a Living so We Can Enjoy Giving 1 Timothy 6 Last week was a great day for our church. We had a really great crowd (166 people) here. The parking lot was full, the sanctuary was full, the overflow was full, we ran out of tables to eat at, but we did not run out of food. That's out highest anniversary sunday count, but it’s only the 3rd highest day of this year. Easter was 200 and VBS Sunday was 174. Easter didn’t feel as packed because we did 2 services. VBS Sunday didn’t feel as packed because we had 40 kids in Childrens church. Here’s whats crazy about last week, we didn’t have a real big number of guests- and the guest we did have for the most part were not first time guests. What we had last week was mainly made up of people who ought to be here every week. Right now we have a very large crowd- a large group that is affiliated with our church, that if you were to run into them at the grocery store and invite them to church they would say, oh thanks but I go to Faith Church in Chandler… We need to see more people move from the crowd to the congregation and from the congregation to the committed and eventually to the core. Here are the steps: Community Crowd Congregation Committed Core Last week I invited everyone to be a part of the New Core Group. some next steps that I'd like for everyone to consider are the following: Believe in Jesus Before we can talk about taking steps to be more involved we need to talk about the most important step of all, believing in Jesus. It’s a commitment to trust Jesus with your life and follow Him. It’s the invitation that Matthew accepted when He walked away from everything and followed Jesus. It’s the invitation that you need to accept. It’s the most important step of this process and it is the most important step of your life. Following Jesus is not only the first step in becoming a part of our church, it is the most important step of your life. 2. Grow in a group We have classes for every age at 9:30 on Sunday mornings. These classes all cover the same biblical theme so families can discuss what they learned through the week. We have Bible Studies for every age on Wednesday nights, plus a group for those needing to take the steps of recovery. 3. Serve on a team. the entry level on serving is at an event- like at Trunk or Treat, the upcoming Christmas parade, etc. These are a one time commitment and usually require little prep. The next level of serving is to join a ministry team. We've got sound and media team, worship/music team, facilities and maintenance team, teaching team, kids ministry team, etc. We are introducing team meetings over the next couple of months and starting in 2017 we will give one Sunday night a month to bring all teams together to spend 15 minutes on vision and strategy for everyone serving and then break into the different teams to meet for 30 minutes with their specific team, discussing ideas/issue that pertain to their particular ministry. 4. Give to the cause. The next few Sundays are going to be focused on finances. There are many people who would like to give, but they find themselves in a financial situation where they are unable to give. I hope to cover some basic money principles from God's word that will help everyone who wants to give be able to give and encourage everyone to is able to give to make the commitment to give. Now, this process isn’t going to be easy. It shouldn’t be. It shouldn’t be something you can do in your sleep, it needs to be a commitment on your part. The first difficulty is going to be listening to a sermon on money. Money is a difficult subject. People say it’s not polite to talk about politics and religion, however people talk about this all the time in a very personal way but few people talk about their personal finances. You’ve probably never said, I’m rich. But you’ve probably said I’m broke. Even at the point in your life that you had the most money or the best income, you probably didn’t consider yourself rich. However, by most standards some of you were or are- but even me saying that feels a little uncomfortable. What you have probably said is, They’re rich. They’re loaded. It’s easier for us to make judgment calls about other people’s finances even though we know very little about it and hard for us to make the judgments about us even though we know the most about our own… You’ve probably never said about yourself, I’m a cheapskate, I’m stingy, but you’ve probably said it about other people. “Oh man, he is soon cheap.” “I can’t believe how stingy he is, he is clearly loaded.” “Nothing confounds the human heart quite like money.” - Carey Nieuwhoff. We see this all the time- people make statements, take stands, choose sides in politics, sports, and business and then suddenly change their stance, position, or team and we quickly find out why. Money. I remember years ago listening to sports radio and people were talking about some major changes that a team had made that didn’t seem to make any sense. They were asking why would they do this? Why would they get rid of their best young recruits? Why would they move to a new city? Tony Kornheiser said, the answer to all of your questions is money, money, money. Money is a great motivator, right? Be honest, for many of you the only reason you’re going to work tomorrow is because they’re going to pay you for it. Because money is so confounds and motivates our hearts, because our lives are so wrapped up with it, the other part of this Nieuwhoff quote is true. “Nothing confounds the human heart quite like money.” “When you trust God with your money, you’re finally trusting God.” - Carey Nieuwhoff. Some of you right now you would say, oh I trust God. But do you? If you were to say to me, Pastor Daniel, I trust you. I’ll confide to you my deepest darkest secrets and come to your for advice. What if then I said, Can I borrow $100? I’ll pay you back next week. That’s a different feeling isn’t it… Money wraps itself around our hearts and eventually it will choke out our generosity, gratitude, kindness, and joy. Paul wrote to Timothy a younger pastor and encouraged him to lead his church well and he said this to him in 1 Timothy 6:9-10. He was saying, Timothy money can be quite the dangerous trap. Back up a few verses to 6 and read through verse 8. Paul is telling Timothy- Godliness and Contentment are a wonderful combination. When you believe in God and you trust Him to take care of you, you’re happy with what you have, it’s a beautiful thing- but a love for money is evil and dangerous. So how do they combat this? Look down at verses 17-19. Many, many years ago a guy visited the church and it just so happen that he showed up right as we started a series on money, of course. I met him for coffee and he said, so is the church about to start a building campaign. No… Is the church about to hire a staff member? No… Is the church trying to pay off some debt? No… Why do you ask. He said, well you just started this series on money so I figured there was some major expense you were trying to raise funds for… I want you to know I’m not talking about money today because there is something that we want to build or buy. We just had the carpet put down and when the trim goes in over it this week it will mark the completion of our foyer project and we’ve paid for it in cash as we’ve gone. We’ve afforded this because so much of the work has been done by our volunteers. I’m not talking to you about money this morning because I want something from you, I’m talking about money this morning because I want something for you. I want you to be invested here. I want you to be bought in to the mission- I want you to be all in on the difference we are trying to make here in the community. I want you to own it. Giving to the mission of the church makes you “own it.” I’m not talking about ownership in a “this is mine!” type of attitude, I’m talking about ownership in the sense that you are committed, you care…. Craig Groeschel told the story of a time he tried to go into a sandwich shop to buy some food for a bunch of volunteers that were working at the church. He said, I got there at 7:55 and said I need to order 30 sandwiches. The lady said, I’m sorry we are closing. He said the owner would have said, 30 sandwiches! Great! A huge sale! but the employee said, I’m getting off in 5 minutes, I’m not doing that…. I don’t want you to say, I just attend at Faith Church. I want you to be all in. I don’t just want you to be able to give, I want you to BE RICH. Paul said in verse 18 18That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute BE RICH! God wants you to truly be rich. Rich in good works. Ready to distribute. God wants you to be in a place where you have money in your pocket ready to give to a need, ready to be generous with. Because I want something for you- I’m going to share with you 3 of the major financial issues that Scripture addresses again and again. They are reoccurring in scripture because they’re common issues. I believe that for many of you, you want to give but you’re convinced that you can’t. It’s difficult to be faithful in giving when you’re struggling to make a living. I want to help you this morning so that nothing hinders your giving but also so that you’re able to pay for next vacation in cash, so that when you’re car breaks down you don’t have to borrow money from your parents to fix it, so that you can watch your retirement funds grow instead of wondering where you’ll be working at age 75. So let’s cover these 3 reoccurring issues. Your eyes are bigger than your check. Whenever I would put more on my plate than I could eat, my grandmother would say, “your eyes were bigger than your stomach.” The bad news is that my stomach caught up with my eyes. For many, your eyes are bigger than your check. You want stuff that you can not afford. You buy stuff that you can not afford. And whenever your check catches up to your eyes, your eyes just get bigger. You’ve got richer tastes than you did a last pay raise. Your extra income wasn’t extra because it just went to pay for the stuff you had already bought. Ecclesiastes 5:10 10 He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity. Your paycheck will never catch up with your wants and desires. Right now some of you are scheming for that next pay raise or promotion because you figure when you get that, then you’ll have the money you need to get what you want, do what you want. You’ll never be satisfied with more if you don’t learn to be content with what you have. In Luke 12:15 Jesus said, a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. Now some of you are thinking, well Pastor Daniel it’s not like I just want lots and lots of stuff, I just want the basic necessities… Would you consider that in a materialistic culture like ours that materialism is considered normal? The average person owns a little more than 3 times as many outfits as the average person of decades ago. The average size of home has increased dramatically and still we don’t have enough room for all of our stuff so only 25% of garages have enough room for a car to be parked in them… Storage units are being built everywhere because we don't have enough room for all our stuff in our homes or garages or sheds. Your pockets have holes in them. Some of you have never held onto money for longer than a month. You can’t miss a day of work because you’re already out of last paychecks money. I like what I read someone say online, our family used to live paycheck to paycheck but through determination and handwork we now live direct deposit to direct deposit. That’s right where most of you live. You’re money is gone immediately. You put it your pocket and it’s gone. Proverbs 21:5 5 The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want. Hastiness leads to poverty. Proverbs 23:5 says for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven. Money disappears fast enough all on its own, but some of you are helping it out. For some of you, you’re only budget is pay these 6 bills that are past due and then do what you want with what’s left. Your already looking forward to getting your tax refund and it will be gone within the month. You’ll be flush with cash for 4 to 6 weeks, maybe and then by summer you’ll be living check to check. You should have budget- a plan for your money that includes saving at least 10%. For some of you that might mean doing an envelope system. For others, it might look like having a an automatic withdrawal from your checking account into a savings account the day after your get paid. Now right now you’re thinking, well I really need to spend that money. We needed this or that. It has actually saved us money in the long run, I think… back in the 70’s and 80’s the American car manufacturing industry was losing ground to Japanese made automobiles at an incredible rate. A few American car executives went to Japan to tour the Japanese car plants. They noticed at the end of the line where the doors were put on that the worker didn’t carry a rubber mallet. In the US the guy who put on the door always had a big rubber mallet to knock the door into place because it wouldn’t quite fit or would be snug and he’d use the mallet to push it in. One of the executives asked, how does he make sure the door will go in all the way and close if he doesn’t have a mallet? The tour guide was perplexed by this question and simply responded, we make sure the door will fit when we design it. They had taken the time in design and development and they didn’t have to beat it in later. Many times we don’t follow a financial plan, we just do what feels right or what we want, and then we break out the rubber mallet and we beat the decision into making sense. We rationalize our hasty purchase. We are experts at justifying the decision that we want to make. “Well, I needed a new car to drive to work because you’ve got to have reliable transportation. yeah, I’ve barely got any money left over because I can hardly afford the payment, but you know I’ve just got to have this.” “Well, this vacation was more expensive than we had planned, but we figured if we are going to do this, we want to go all out, and we won’t be taking another trip for a long time- I mean I know we said that 6 months ago, but the deal that we got on the hotel room was something we just couldn’t pass up.” “Yeah this furniture was pretty expensive and a lot more than we planned on spending, but they gave us such a great deal. We saved so much money by spending more than we have on hand, but it’s no big deal because they have great financing options.” Your back is broken by debt. Have you ever seen the offices and headquarters of places that loan money. They didn’t make enough money to build those monstrosities by merely giving you money and you paying them back, they make their money on the interest. Whenever you finance something, you are paying more for it. You are giving someone money. Proverbs 22:7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. Taking on debt so that we can get what we want now sounds great, until you consider just how much more you are paying to have it now. Right now, many of you are so bound by your debt that you are trapped and the only way out is to make some radical changes. This doesn’t sound like any fun, but it will bring you freedom. I remember seeing a guy make a half court shot and winning a large sum of money and they asked, what are you going to do with the money!? I’m going to pay off my student loans. The announcer was like, oh… His facial expression read, “Boring!” But if that guy owed $50k at the standard rate for student loans and still had 10 years to go, he just saved another $10k. His $50k half court shot became a $60k half court shot! Next steps: Act your wage. Make a budget that includes giving & saving Speak with a debt counsellor or develop a debt snowball plan

Year ago, one of my mentors told me to look up Carrie Wilkerson. He thought I would be impressed with the way she built a business on her own terms, from her own home, keeping her own family as her #1 priority. Always. You all know, I love doing Facebook “research.” So, I looked Carrie up, “Followed” her (as her Friends were at capacity, no surprise), and was immediately very impressed. What drew me to Carrie was her story. Through various Facebook posts over the years, I saw her post these intimate snapshots into her life and her history. Her posts about her family routinely left me teary eyed. While I was trying (desperately) to grow my little family, she filled me with hope as I learned her story of how she grew her (not so little) family. I could feel love and grace and strength in everything she shared. When I started the Shameless Mom Academy, I knew I wanted to interview Carrie. She is tough but gentle; firm, but kind; loud, but soft. My kind of girl. 100%. I have heard some of Carrie’s stories a few times now (yes, I totally sound like a stalker). Yet, she still gave me goose bumps over and over in this interview. Listen in to hear Carrie share: How she became a Barefoot Executive and how you can be one too Why your competition is not your competition How she overcame 6 figures of debt and lost over 120 pounds How you can divide & conquer and create boundaries in all areas of your life in order to prevent resentment from others How to say NO and why you should say NO Why your kids need to be on a stage with a mic, sooner than later Links Mentioned: Carrie’s Website Carrie’s 7 Day Business Blitz (free download!) In Episode 4 of "Escape from Caloriegate," I shine light on the elephant in the room. Who CARES about all this arcane "diet stuff"? Why does it matter? Why should you - or anyone, for that matter - bother spending more than a few hours thinking about this subject? Here's why. The "Caloriegate" phenomenon has ramifications go well beyond questions of "which diet is best." It touches on vital truths about ourselves and our world. What I'm saying is... check it out, y'all! Ever since I got interested in diet theory, I’ve been astonished by how little people care about it. I lost 15 pounds and kept that weight off for 4 years eating the opposite diet that most people do; But no one seems to care. Which is weird. The calorie fallacy is the glue holding together the BS that's made us fat and sick... and that keeps us that way. Even most people in the "low carb/paleosphere" -- who eat and think like I do about diet and disease and nutrition -- fail to grasp the importance of breaking the spell of the Calorie Wizards. Am I just a shill for Atkins or for Gary Taubes? (NO) Why we get "cankles" and other unfortunate fat tissue growth. Per Julius Bauer: your fat tissue lives for itself and does not fit into the precisely regulated management of the whole organism -- read that sentence 17 times until it becomes imprinted on your brain. Are Taubes and Bauer wrong? (In some sense, perhaps - but not in the way that critics suggest!) Studies that bust on low carb or that seem to "prove" that "calories count" in no way disprove Bauer. I suggest that "lipophilia" -- a.k.a. "it's overstoring, not overeating" -- is 100% true and immune to typical scientific criticism. Beyond Calories, Carbs, and Insulin -- we're all missing so much (probably!) Eleven percent of Americans over age 12 take antidepressants. Tens of billions spent every year on meds for type 2 diabetes, hypertension, "cholesterol," etc. Many meds cause fat gain; some cause fat loss. The conventional explanation = meds -> overeating -> overstoring. Thus, if you intervene at the "overeating" part of the equation, you can stop/reverse the fat gain. We're thus given crackpot advice like the following, from a Livestrong.com article on the topic of SSRI weight gain: "If you're already exercising and not losing weight, increase the workout to 60 minutes. You can also try making the workout more intense. For example, try riding your bike often rather than just taking a leisurely ride through the city streets." Dumb advice ignores reality that many meds impact the insulin system, increasing/decreasing insulin sensitivity in certain people. Researcher says noradrenergic antidepressants can decrease insulin sensitivity. If so, shouldn't it be: meds -> mess up insulin system -> overstoring (with "overeating," if it occurs at all, as a side effect)? Not just academic concern, look at some of these stories! "I gained weight while on Zoloft... after six months, I hadn't changed my diet, nor my workout... Nevertheless, I gained 20lbs in 6months. " "I started taking Zoloft about 15 months ago and have gained 20 pounds. None of my clothes fit me anymore. My diet has not changed and I exercise more than ever." "Over the past two years, I have put on a considerable amount of weight (about 15-20 lbs). During that time, I did not change my eating habits or my exercise routine. In fact, I began a step aerobics/kick boxing class three months ago and have only gained more weight." It goes on and on and on and on like this - hundreds of thousands of similar stories, yet the answer is always the same - "just eat less and exercise more" to counter the effects of the meds. Are all these people lying? Or is something else going on? Another example of It's Overstoring Not Overeating - also ripped from Good Calories Bad Calories. Nicotine's effect on lipoprotein lipase, a key fat storage hormone. "Evidence suggests that nicotine induces weight loss...
