We review Matt Walsh's new documentary uncovering the DEI movement in the United States. 'Am I a Racist?' looks at race relations specifically, and the self-help, grief counselling, Protestant evangelical culture found within the workshops he attends. There is a pessimism at the heart of these DEI sessions, one that has a wider context in capitalist realism, afro-pessimism, and Victorian morality. The function of pessimism here is about proposing a foreclosure of systemic change or reorganising society in a meaningful way to end racism, so that instead people individually 'do the work' through self-flagellation and quasi-psychological deconstruction. That sets up the lucrative grift of DEI workshops or events as the only activity someone can attend to be anti-racist, rather than focusing on political action. Individualistic measures become the ceiling of what one can do to defeat racism. Plus, Derrida's 'reiteration' theory, women's loyalty to men as highly racialised, the red flags of coercive workshops, and a prediction of land acknowledgements happening even in Israel some day. At the end of the episode we discuss some of the damage done by vegan activists to indigenous communities in the north of Canada.

The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 376: Collective Care Over Individualistic Self-Care with Muna Shakour Description: The massacre and genocide of Palestinians in Gaza have been going on for months now, and other genocide emergencies are simultaneously taking place around the world. Yet, many (especially in the health and wellness industry), still refuse to speak up, choosing instead to prioritize their safety and comfort over the need for liberation and freedom for all oppressed people. Muna Shakour shares her perspective as a Palestinian with family in the West Bank about shifting from focusing on self-care to looking at collective care. Muna Shakour is a personal development coach who accidentally became an activist after the events in Gaza started. Her coaching practice has evolved over the years, from a Parenting Coach for parents of children 8 years and younger to coaching small business owners and coaches on how to grow their businesses and personal brands online to attract their ideal clients. Muna also offers corporate training focused on self-reflection and developing soft skills for leadership. Since October 7, Muna has been actively speaking out against the atrocities happening in Gaza and Palestine, sharing information and drawing attention to the situation there. Muna talks about her work before October 7, 2023 and how she gets nervous about talking about her “work” now. She highlights the relationship we have with all people, the earth, and all creatures, and why we need to focus on caring for the collective “we” instead of focusing solely on self-care for “me”. Muna shares very honestly about the emotions she is experiencing and how that influences her decisions in who to connect with, hire, and support. She also offers some suggestions about how to navigate working for a company that won't allow you to speak up and how to continue running your online business alongside speaking up for peace and justice. Key Takeaways: [3:29] Shannon gives a shout-out of thanks to sponsors OfferingTree and Pelvic Health Professionals. [6:02] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Muna Shakour. [10:35] What does Muna do and who does she do it for? She shares more about her professional journey and how she "accidentally" became an activist. [21:04] Shannon and Muna discuss what it has been like for them to encounter people in the wellness world who say they don't have the capacity to care about everything, especially when they have been increasingly involved in social justice movements in the past few years. [28:35] A lot of us have been feeling a lot of anger and grief. We need to find productive ways to channel that energy. [31:23] How can we be more careful with who we choose to work with and where we give our money to ensure that our values are aligned? [37:48] Shannon pops in to share a little bit about OfferingTree. [40:06] What are Muna's thoughts on when someone says something online that is harmful or hurtful, but it's because they still have some learning to do? [44:39] Muna shares a little about what it's like being a Palestinian and having to avoid mentioning her identity for various reasons. [47:09] We can use our privilege to start speaking up about Palestine and exercise our empathy to imagine what must be like for Palestinians. [53:19] In the health and wellness space, a lot of people try hard not to post political things. Shannon and Muna discuss how they're changing people's minds about this stance. [58:11] Muna shares her dream of people mobilizing en masse to demand change. [63:33] Palestine has become a measure of what we will stand for and what we will not allow. [66:44] What would Muna say to a yoga teacher who has not spoken up till now and is wondering how to do so now? [73:33] We have to speak out even louder because we have privilege and clout that others don't. [80:40] Shannon shares some of her reflections from this conversation with Muna. [81:59] Shannon talks about some of the upcoming events in Pelvic Health Professionals and upcoming episodes of the podcast. Quotes from this episode: "Because the focus was so much on the self, we lost that feeling of community and the good of the collective versus the individual." "There's always a relationship between us and nature and the universe and earth and the world and people." "This is the future. The future is you're not following just for the advice. You're following the person, their personal brand, of course, with all of the marketing, but the values of this person and it needs to shine through." "I imagine if I'm a mom there, how would I want people on the outside to be?" "My personal opinion is you can still do work and talk about Palestine and they can even both be done at the same time." "What will you stand for and what will you not allow?" "This whole idea of the separateness is what's hurting us all. We have to remember that we are connected and relationships are the most important thing."
In this episode, we explore the struggles of feeling competitive rather than celebrating our friends' successes. Reflecting on how individualism often creates this mindset, I shared insights on how redefining success, practicing gratitude, and actively supporting others can shift us from competition to connection. “Reconciliation and reparations were never supposed to be two opposite things.” The Church is called to be a repairer of the breach. Drawing on the prophetic texts of Isaiah and Nehemiah, Brenda Salter McNeil joins Mark to discuss her latest book: Empowered to Repair: Becoming People Who Mend Broken Systems and Heal Our Communities. Together they reflect on the Church's responsibility for social justice; the call to engage politics for the common good; the nature of systemic injustice and systemic change; empowerment and mutual investment in change; and the importance of moving closer to injustice in order to become a “repairer of the breach.” Brenda Salter McNeil is a leader in the international movement for peace and reconciliation. She is an Associate Professor of reconciliation studies in the School of Theology at Seattle Pacific University, where she also directs the Reconciliation Studies program. She also serves on the pastoral staff of Quest Church in Seattle, WA. She is the author of numerous books on Christianity, reconciliation, and racial justice. Follower her @RevDocBrenda. AB Mark introduces Brenda Salter McNeil Learn more about Empowered to Repair: Becoming People Who Mend Broken Systems and Heal Our Communities Isaiah 58 and “As If Worship” Isaiah 58:11-12—“And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water whose waters do not fail. And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt. You shall raise up the foundations of many generations. You shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to dwell in. Repair and reparations Brian Stevenson: “Real reparations would mean to repair what was actually broken.” “We want to see justice. We want to see change. … Reconciliation and reparations were never supposed to be two opposite things.” Why the Old Testament prophetic book of Nehemiah is relevant to the church in this political moment: “I wanted to use a narrative in scripture that showed us how do you actually organize people. That it's not just enough to preach about it on Sundays, there's a way that we've got to bring a diverse coalition of people together and show them that we can rebuild what is broken around us.” “How do we retain our identity and our dignity?” How asking the right questions can generate empathy and motivate action Nehemiah's Prayer of Confession Honest confession, just telling the truth Brenda's son Omari's social post: “We are always left saddened but not shocked. This will happen again. Another black queen or king doing what should be considered a regular activity will be killed just because. Black people will express outrage while everyone else will continue on relatively unchanged. We'll exclaim, hashtag Black Lives Matter, and we will get countless comments about, What about all lives matter? I'm looking at you, white evangelical churches. The shock will wear off for the rest of the world and we'll be left to rebuild again by ourselves. This cycle is so ingrained in the Black American narrative that we have learned to quickly spring into actionable next steps because we've done this before and we will do it again. We've had no choice but to normalize the trauma and carry on. So to those who wonder, I have no hope that I or my future children will ever live in a world that is quote unquote equal or totally safe or fair, even though I will always fight for it. Sadly for me and so many others, I lost that dream as a little boy.” Our own humanity is being diminished in every act of injustice Is systemic change possible? Individualistic vs communal lenses The need to get proximate to injustice in order to become a repairer When does proximity help? What causes proximity to stick and create change? Empowerment and mutual investment The work of justice is ultimately God's work Fannie Lou Hamer's activism James Baldwin: “I can't believe what you say, because I see what you do.” Doing what we say “We might not change everything, but in our little corner of the world, we can make a difference in that spot and people get to see a glimpse of the kingdom. And that's life changing.” About Brenda Salter McNeil Brenda Salter McNeil is a teacher, preacher, and leader in the international movement for peace and reconciliation. Neuroscientist Kristen Lindquist on how even on a biological level, emotions are entirely subjective. According to this neuroscientist, your emotions look different from those of someone who grew up on the other side of the world. Kristen Lindquist, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, explores the concept of 'affective realism,' where our emotional experiences dictate our true reality. Emotions, Lindquist explains, are cultural artifacts, passed down like art or language, and are distinct reflections of both our biological makeup and our societal norms. Individualistic societies like the United States and collectivist cultures like Japan interpret emotions like anger differently, leading to varied physiological responses. These findings suggest that there are no “universal emotional expressions,” that even facial muscle movements we associate with certain feelings are not globally recognized, but are instead interpreted through a cultural lens. Lindquist's work invites us to consider our own emotional responses, encouraging a more open-minded approach to interpreting the feelings of others. Through this understanding, we can appreciate the unique perspectives each individual brings, to eventually unlock better solutions for understanding the world around us. “If you believe that humans are animals, there can be no such thing as the history of humanity, only the lives of particular humans. If we speak of the history of the species at all, it is only to signify the unknowable sum of these lives. As with other animals, some lives are happy, others wretched. None has a meaning that lies beyond itself.” Welcome back to another episode of Made You Think! This week, we're diving into discussion on Straw Dogs by John Gray. From questioning moral structures to pondering the collective soul, we'll journey through the philosophical landscape of Straw Dogs, examining technology, lifespans, and the very essence of humanism. Technology is not a human-only thing, and over time, new technologies will continue to emerge. (29:55) Differences between Robert Persig's and John Gray's ideas. We look at whether our views on life can change and how science fits into all of this. (36:12) Gray appears anti-striving, with ideals that we shouldn't try to control life or we'll end up disappointed in the end. (41:30) To strive or not to strive? We talk about the evolution of technology, it's accessibility in today's age, and the hard work that has happened in order for tech to progress. (46:48) Black holes and string theory and dark matter. Oh my! We chat about some cool scientific theories and how they affect our understanding of the world. (50:59) Lots of sci-fi books are being made into tv shows and hitting the major streaming services. Nat, Neil, and Adil list a few that they're excited about. (59:42) Don't judge a book by the Goodreads reviews! If you're intrigued to pick up a copy of Straw Dogs, you can check that out here. We give our final thoughts on the book and discuss some other books that John Gray has written. (1:05:22) That wraps up this episode! Next up, we'll be reading Flowers for Algernon. Not many actors-turned-filmmakers will swing for the fences in such a big way with their directorial debuts as Daniel Kaluuya has done with “The Kitchen.” Instead of making some small indie drama, Kaluuya, alongside co-director Kibwe Tavares, decided to go with a full dystopian sci-fi drama. But you better believe this is a film filled with a ton of heart at its core. And in this episode of The Playlist Podcast, Kaluuya, alongside lead actor Kane Robinson, stop by to talk about “The Kitchen.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/support

In this episode, Jamie has an illuminating conversation with Dr. Rodolfo Savica, who is professor of neurology and epidemiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. In his clinical practice, Dr. Savica specializes in movement disorders, particularly Young Onset Parkinson's disease (which is also called Early Onset Parkinson's Disease). Dr. Savica explains how he became interested in this field after encountering a patient with young onset Parkinson's who lacked resources and support. He highlights the main differences between young onset and late onset Parkinson's, emphasizing that the brains of young onset patients do not have the aging-related damage seen in late onset patients. He also discusses the challenges in defining and understanding the various conditions within the umbrella term "Parkinson's disease." Regarding treatment, Dr. Savica explains that historically there was a hesitation to start medications aggressively in young onset patients due to concerns about complications. However, current data do not support this approach, and he advocates for individualized treatment based on each patient's needs and responses. He emphasizes the importance of optimizing medication dosages and timing to minimize off times and improve quality of life. The discussion highlights the need for a shift in the approach to treating young onset Parkinson's, emphasizing individualized care and addressing the specific challenges faced by this patient population. The episode also includes a lengthy discussion on lifestyle, including the importance of exercise for Parkinson's disease. Dr Savica emphasizes that 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, five times a week, is the best treatment to delay the progression of the disease. The conversation concludes with a discussion about the need for further research on specific subtypes of Parkinson's disease, and the significance of collaboration between patients, experts, and policymakers to advance understanding and treatment of the condition. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/parkinsonsfightclub/support

It was created by Fons Trompenaars. 在进行文化交流的时候,most of the time things will go well(大多数时候,事情都会很顺利),但是,when things don't, and misunderstandings arise(当遇到分歧,出现误解的时候),the Trompenaars Cultural Dimensions Model can help(琼潘纳斯文化维度维度理论就派上用场了)。 It's important to consider the cultural background of the other party. 这个维度主要看的是:某种文化之下,what matters more(是什么更重要),是rules(规则),还是 relationships(关系)。 Cultures based on universalism(普遍主义文化的国家),人们treat all cases the same,哪怕是涉及到自己的亲戚、朋友,无论什么背景、什么身份,都一样的待遇。The focus is more on the rules than the relationship. 美国• the U.K. 英国• Australia 澳大利亚Cultures based on particularism(特殊主义文化)会觉得,relationships more important than rules(人际关系、情感关系比规则重要)。为了亲朋好友,you can bend the rules(可以改变规则)。 Each case has to be examined in light of its special merits. Individualistic cultures believe that your outcomes in life are the result of your choices. Cultures based on communitarianism believe your quality of life is better when we help each other. There is a strong sense of loyalty within the group. 除了中国之外,集体主义文化的国家还有:Japan(日本),much of Africa(非洲大部分地区),and Latin American countries(拉丁美洲国家)。 It should be noted that individualism and collectivism are not binary opposites. In a neutral culture(中立文化中),people tend not to share their emotions(人们往往不去分享他们的情绪). Emotions are of course felt by the individual, but they are controlled.(人们会控制自己的情感表达。) In an affective culture(情感文化中), people tend to share their emotions, even in the workplace(哪怕是在办公场所,人们会倾向于分享他们的情绪). 而且,it is considered normal(这都是很正常的)。

On today's podcast, we take some time to think about where we come from and why that might be something we're interested in knowing more about. American culture has tended towards individualism in almost every aspect of life. But in fact, in how many ways do we embody those who have come before us, whether knowingly or unknowingly? And how much does it matter? Today, we consider the invitation to think bigger than ourselves. Join us as we consider the vastness of who we are. How is it that we ultimately decide what is valuable? What structures in our world shape our decisions? Why do we prefer what we prefer? The interaction between Alexandar the Great & Diogenes the Cynic at Corinth creates a strong contrast between two individuals on absolute other sides of the social spectrum. On this episode you'll hear a recording of an online lecture by Andrew Archer. The topic is “mindfulness”: as a state of mind, as a principle, and as a social movement. The commodification of an individualized form of mindfulness promises to relieve stress, lower blood pressure, reduce chronic pain, improve sleep, alleviate GI difficulties, improve mental health and self-control with enhanced flexibility, equanimity, and improved concentration as well as emotional intelligence. The self-focused list of individualized benefits goes on and on. However, Ron Purser's book, McMindfulness, sheds light on what happens when a contemplative practice is stripped of its ethical origins, i.e., the Buddhist Eightfold Path. Divorced from its historic and cultural roots, secular mindfulness has become a capitalist spirituality for social control, i.e., maintenance of the political-economic status quo, via self-tracking and ultimately self-pacification. Just breathe and don't judge as the world burns. References: Purser, R.E. (2019). McMindfulness: How mindfulness became the new capitalist spirituality. Repeater Books: United Kingdom. This episode melted our brains a wee bit, but in a good way. In a continuation of our (seemingly) popular "Ghost Perspective" series, we share our takes, opinions and theories on a potential "GHOST AGENDA." Why are Ghosts here? What is their drive? What is their meaning? Individualistic, or an overarching purpose? Of course, wacky humor sustains us, as we search for answers....What do YOU think?
This evening we started a new Hypothesis, number 20. The focus is on receiving the advice of the fathers and how important it is not to develop an individualistic approach to the spiritual life. Asceticism can very quickly become something of our own making. Whenever we are guided simply by our own judgment, spiritual practices can very easily lead us into pride. The longer that we are in such a state, the greater the danger of falling into delusion. One who thinks he is above the elders' or anyone else's judgment, he who seeks no one else's counsel, will come to experience the greatest darkness. We are part of the living body of the Church and God has given us that which is most essential for our sanctity. Despite the darkness that we see within the world and sometimes see within the life of the Church, we do not want to lose sight of God‘s Providential care and the guidance of the Spirit. Nor do we want to lose sight of those God has put on our path to help support us and guide us. Such an attitude requires from us an openness to the guidance of the Spirit in our lives. Above all it requires humility. Our path as Christian men and women is distinctly the path of humility, the path of the cross, and so we must never be deluded to the extent that we place our own judgment above others. In the end such an attitude will eventually lead us to place our judgment above God himself. From such a tragic darkness - we may never emerge. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:16:39 Anthony: Look at the history of Family Radio for a contemporary example. 00:18:33 John White: O felix culpa! Rose couldn't join us at this tea. So Manasi invited another friend and a Bridgewalker, Marcia Bernstein. Marcia is an expert in Ayurveda and a real estate investor who has a knack for sensing the energy of a property or a land. She has had several other careers in her past which have given her fascinating experiences and quite a few stories. In the current season of life, Marcia gets to explore, how she can compile all the information, skills and wisdom she has gained over the decades, and "publish" it so it benefits others as well. In this conversation, you will hear them discuss: How seasons don't just occur in nature but also in business and life What was Marcia's experience like working as a woman in several different male-dominated industries How to honor the seasons in business (Hint: "What title do I give myself as a solo-preneur?" "Who's my ideal client?" Enjoy! Links Mentioned in the Episode: Episode 7. Individualistic vs. Group Oriented Cultures Other resources: Click here for 3 free resources for Bridgewalkers.
