Series 3, Episode 6 of Artery features Adèle Commins and Daithí Kearney with Kayla Rush Musicologist Dr Adèle Commins is Head of Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music at Dundalk Institute of Technology. Her PhD from Maynooth University focused on the music of Irish-born composer Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. Her recordings include contributions to an album of Irish piano accordion music released by Comhaltas in 2014 and vocal soloist on an album by Irish composer Sr Marie Dunne in 2015. She also contributes music in two local churches. Her recent research includes critically documenting the music of Co. Louth céilí bands from the mid-twentieth century. Her compositions featured in the seminal publications Tunes from the Women (2023) and some have been recorded by Cork-based Ceolta Sí (2020). Ethnomusicologist and geographer Dr Daithí Kearney is co-director of the Creative Arts Research Centre at Dundalk Institute of Technology, where he lectures in music, theatre and tourism. His PhD from University College Cork examined the geographies of Irish traditional music. An All-Ireland champion musician, he has toured and recorded as a musician, singer and dancer with a number of groups including Siamsa Tíre, The National Folk Theatre of Ireland, and performed for President Obama in The White House. He recorded the critically acclaimed album Midleton Rare with accordion player John Cronin in 2012 and continues to tour regularly. He wrote and produced the musical To Stay or Leave (2005, 2015) and his compositions have been recorded by groups including Nuada (2004) and Ceolta Sí (2020). As a composer, he has received commissions funded by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltachts and Cork County Council. Both Commins and Kearney have published extensively on music including contributions to the Companion to Irish Traditional Music and the Encyclopaedia of Music in Ireland . In 2017 they released an album A Louth Lilt, featuring their own compositions, and produced the documentary The Road to Speyfest in 2016. International tours including North and South America, France, Scotland, Norway and England. They have composed and arranged a number of pieces for the Oriel Traditional Orchestra, of which they are musical directors. In 2024, they were commissioned by Louth County Council to compose the score for a music theatre production Brigid, Lady of Light for the 1500 celebrations of St Brigid in Co. Louth. Dr Kayla Rush is an assistant lecturer in music at Dundalk Institute of Technology. An anthropologist of art, music, and performance, her current research examines private, fee-paying rock music schools in global perspective. She previously held a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship, supporting ethnographic research with Rock Jam, a private music education organisation in Ireland. Her work has appeared in Borderlands, Liminalities, Feminist Anthropology, Journal of Popular Music Education, and IASPM Journal, among others. She is the author of The Cracked Art World: Conflict, Austerity, and Community Arts in Northern Ireland (Berghahn, 2022). She is also a recognized teacher and practitioner of creative ethnography, with a particular interest in ethnographic science fiction. This St. Patrick's Day, Paul and Dan discuss the rich history of Irish myths, legends, and stories in the D&D game. From Druids and Bards to the Banshees and Firbolg, what are some of the best ways to spice up your game with inspirations from the Emerald Isle? Irish mythology is the body of myths indigenous to the island of Ireland. It was originally passed down orally in the prehistoric era. In the early medieval era, some myths were transcribed by Christian monks, who heavily altered and Christianised the myths. Irish mythology is the best-preserved branch of Celtic mythology. The main supernatural beings in Irish mythology are the Túatha Dé Danann ("the folk of the goddess Danu"), also known by the earlier name Túath Dé ("god folk" or "tribe of the gods"). Early medieval Irish writers also called them the fir dé (god-men) and cenéla dé (god-kindreds), possibly to avoid calling them simply 'gods'. They are often depicted as kings, queens, bards, warriors, heroes, healers and craftsmen who have supernatural powers and are immortal. Prominent members include The Dagda ("the great god"); The Morrígan ("the great queen" or "phantom queen"); Lugh; Nuada; Aengus; Brigid; Manannán; Dian Cécht the healer; and Goibniu the smith. They are also said to control the fertility of the land; the tale De Gabáil in t-Sída says the first Gaels had to establish friendship with the Túath Dé before they could raise crops and herds. They dwell in the Otherworld but interact with humans and the human world. Many are associated with specific places in the landscape, especially the sídhe: prominent ancient burial mounds such as Brú na Bóinne, which are entrances to Otherworld realms. The Túath Dé can hide themselves with a féth fíada ('magic mist'). They are said to have travelled from the north of the world, but then were forced to live underground in the sídhe after the coming of the Irish. Subconscious Realms Episode 42 - Tuatha Dé Danan - The Fomorians PT2 - Gary Wayne. Ladies & Gentlemen, I gets no better whatsoever & I lost count how many times my mind was blown within the first 30 minutes alone. My, Oh, My, Oh, My..prepare to be dragged into that other Intense Tuatha Dé Denan Dimension in Expert Fashion with Sir Gary Wayne! All in all This particular Mythos happens to be the most Fascinating Pantheon, Period. Tuatha Dé Danann were descended from Nemed, leader of a previous wave of inhabitants of Ireland. They came from four cities to the north of Ireland—Falias, Gorias, Murias and Finias—where they taught their skills in the sciences, including architecture, the arts, and magic, including necromancy. According to Lebor Gabála Érenn, they came to Ireland "in dark clouds" and "landed on the mountains of [the] Conmaicne Rein in Connachta", otherwise Sliabh an Iarainn, "and they brought a darkness over the sun for three days and three nights". They immediately burnt the ships "so that they should not think of retreating to them, and the smoke and the mist that came from the vessels filled the neighbouring land and air. Therefore it was conceived that they had arrived in clouds of mist".Led by king Nuada, they fought the First Battle of Magh Tuireadh on the west coast, in which they defeated and displaced the native Fir Bolg, who then inhabited Ireland. In the battle, Nuada lost an arm to their champion, Sreng. Since Nuada was no longer "unblemished", he could not continue as king and was replaced by the half-Fomorian Bres, who turned out to be a tyrant. The physician Dian Cecht replaced Nuada's arm with a working silver one and he was reinstated as king. However, Dian Cecht's son Miach was dissatisfied with the replacement so he recited the spell, "ault fri halt dí & féith fri féth" (joint to joint of it and sinew to sinew), which caused flesh to grow over the silver prosthesis over the course of nine days and nights. However, in a fit of jealous rage Dian Cecht slew his own son. Because of Nuada's restoration as the leader, Bres complained to his family and his father, Elatha, who sent him to seek assistance from Balor, king of the Fomorians. **

The Morrigan was an Irish-Celtic goddess of war and was known to incite violence, rage, frenzy and was also regarded as the bringer of death. The goddess could take any form of creature she wanted, and she was able to bring about the downfall of a hero-warrior named Cu Chulainn after he rejected her numerous attempts to seduce him. Her coupling with the Dagda, another major warrior-god, was an important part of the Samhain festival which the Celts celebrated to mark the beginning of a new year.The Morrigan is a goddess of war, fertility, and battle. She has been referred to as the Phantom Queen, and she is also a part of a trio of goddesses known as the Badb and Nemain. The Morrigan frequently appears in the ornithological guise of a hooded crow. She is one of the Tuatha De Danann (People of the Goddess Danu) and She helped defeat the Firbolgs at the First Battle of Magh Tuireadh and the Fomori at the Second Battle of Mag Tured.The Mórrigan has a terrible appearance, and it is this and her aggression which have a strong psychological effect on whoever she chooses during a battle. At the same time, the goddess can be sexually attractive. Consequently, the Mórrigan is both a symbol of destruction and fertility. The Morrigan is believed to be the daughter of Ernmas (a mother goddess), who was in turn the daughter of Nuada, the king of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Her siblings are variously listed as Ériu, Banba, and Fódla—who made up the triple goddess representing the spirit and sovereignty of Ireland—as well as Badb and Macha. The Morrígan was married to the Dagda, the “Good God” and one of the kings of the Tuatha Dé Danann.There is debate over the meaning of the Morrigan's name. It is believed that the goddess derives from an Indo-European root that is associated with terror. It is also translated as "the queen". The name Morrigan is derived from the word queen, which is often translated to great queen. She is associated with the fury of war, which is why she is sometimes referred to as the queen of demons.The goddess has a variety of powers, such as being able to cast spells and predict the future and she is also capable of changing her form at will. She is also linked with the raven or crow, which is a creature associated with war and death.The Morrigan also has led to the origin of the banshee, who can foretell the death of a household by letting out an extremely loud wail or scream. Usually, she is seen in a physical form as an old woman with long hair.The Morrigan is one of the most popular characters that has been constantly adapted in modern times in numerous mediums and channels. Dagda was an Irish god who was part of a group of Irish gods known as the Tuatha Dé Danaan. He was regarded as the father of the gods and was known for his knowledge and good nature. He is often referred as “The Dagda”The legend of Dagda states that he is a god of the earth, knowledge, harvest, time and fate. He is known to possess knowledge and wisdom that was frequently used to help the mortals. He is also depicted as a wanderer who spreads happiness and sense of wonder among the mortal world of Ireland & Scotland.The Dagda was a giant of a man with long and unruly beard. He wore a woolen cloak around his head and his clothes never fit him right with his belly and buttocks being frequently exposed. This however did not take away his good looks.It has been theorized that the Dagda's gruff appearance was created by the Christians who recorded Irish folktales. These early historians wanted to make him appear foolish and humorous when compared to their deity Jesus Christ.The Dagda is the son of Eithne, who is the daughter of Balor, the leader of the Fomorians. He is also considered the brother of Lugh, who ruled Ireland for 40 years.The Dagda has a daughter named Brigit, who is a powerful force of fertility. His most famous sons are Cermat and Angus Og, who have represented youth, beauty, and maybe even love.The Dagda is the husband of Morrigan, who referred to as his “envious wife”. He has two brothers, Nuada and Ogma. In the Dindsench, the Dagda is given Ainge, a daughter who is known for her ability to keep a twig basket or bathtub leaking when the tide is in. Dagda is also said to be the son of Elatha and grandson on Delbeath. His other wife is known as Elcmar and Echtgi is the another daughter that is mentioned in the Banshenchas.The Dagda has various names or epithets that reflect the various aspects of his character. Some of these include Eochaid Ollathair, Ruad Roftessa, Fer Benn, Daire, Aed, Cera, Cerrce, Easal and Eogabal.Dagda had a variety of objects that were associated with power and position. The Dagda was known for his various powers, including a caldron full of fruit trees that were never empty allowing him to feed as many people as possible. He also had two pigs that were always ready to eat.He also had a large club that could kill both men and animals. It is said that one of the ends of the club can kill 9 men in a single swing while the other end can revive people from the dead. He is also in possession of a harp that can be used to change seasons based on the song he plays.The Dagda has also appeared in various other pop culture works. In Dungeons & Dragons, he was often portrayed as a leader of a Celtic pantheon. He was also featured in the game's Scion role-playing game. Hello to all those out there in the Wasteland's of Modernity. Today we spoke of "Pop Paganism" paganism that spawns from pop culture, and misconceptions spread through word of mouth. From Black Heimdolla$, to Thor and Loki are brothers, to Nuada is a dark elf, and beyond to more long lasting effects like the effect of Wagner's operas and Shakespeare's plays. As well as lies about paganism spawned from good natured "Experts" from conflation of Holda and Frigg, the "Iranian Origin" of King Arthur and the Grail, and much more academic nonsense that is easily brushed aside. After releasing their single 'Kraken' and its accompanying film clip through HEAVY this week, Melbourne's Nuada now cast their gaze forward to debut album Beneath The Swamp, which is due for release later this year.With only that one song thus far on which the band can be musically judged, guitarist David Milner concedes that although Kraken is a good initiation to Nuada, it by no means encapsulates the full spectrum of sound that this talented quartet cover."I think it is (a pretty good representation)", Milner measured. "Every song on the record sounds quite different but this song does have a lot of what we are trying to do. It's got that slow stoner rock groove; it's got this thrash metal outro section; it's got really messed up guitar solo and catchy vocals so I think it has a lot of it. We've got a lot of weird stuff on the record (laughs). There's ten minute long trippy stoner songs, there's short almost bluesy tunes, there's some messed up prog metal... I think it doesn't get all of it but it is a pretty good introduction to what we are trying to do with this band".In the full interview David discusses the single and film clip, introduces Nuada and its members, reveals what they are trying to achieve musically, clarrifies their sound and influences on Beneath the Swamp, discusses current tours and more.

This week we’re having a good time with our favorite cat-loving half demon in 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army.  The story continues the with Hellboy, Abe and Liz still working to protect the world from supernatural beasts as part of the B.P.R.D.  Hellboy and Liz are having minor relationship issues due to an unexpected pregnancy.  To add to all the chaos they get a new commanding officer in Dr. Krauss, the superintelligent smoke monster.  Their mission is to stop Prince Nuada from getting all three piece of the magical crown that controls the indestructible mechanical golden army.  After meeting Nuada’s sister, Princess Nuala, Abe falls deeply in love with hear and his feeling may threaten the outcome of the mission.  This movie is really fun and holds up well on our most recent rewatch.  The monsters are cool and Ron Perlman shines as the perfect Hellboy.   Thank you for all of the love you continue to show us.  Please rate and review the podcast wherever you get it and if you like the show, share it with your friends.  Have a great week.

Interview with Philip Shallcrass, aka Greywolf Head of the British Druid Order PArt 1 of our Interview Greywolf, the Chief 'Wolfsbody' of the British Druid Order (the BDO) created the Order from his realisation he was a Druid in 1974 and his simultaneous realisation that Druids were the shamanic folk of ancient Britain and Europe. He has been chief of the BDO since 1979, sharing the role with Bobcat (aka Emma Restall Orr) between 1995 and 2002. He is a writer, musician, singer-songwriter, artist, roundhouse builder and thatcher. He currently lives in Wiltshire with two of his three sons, not far from his beloved Avebury. Nuada Láim Argait, the merchant king with the Silver Arm, leads his people in wisdom and strategy for much of the saga of the Second Battle of Moytura.  He is widely regarded as cognate with the British Celtic god Nodens.  So when and how, mythologically speaking, did he come to Ireland? This first episode of the second series of Acallam na nÉces takes in the opening sections of the text of Cath Maige Tuired, including the coming of the Dé Danann from the northern islands of the world.  It also covers the first battle, the battle of Southern Moytura where Nuada lost his arm, and how Dían Cécht replaced it with  the famous silver one.
