Doug Jones's face is often hidden behind elaborate makeup, yet somehow, through his eyes and body language he always create memorable characters. A favorite of filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro, he was the sea creature inThe Shape of Water and had key roles in Hellboy, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and Pan's Labyrinth. He spent five seasons on Star Trek: Discovery and is currently having a ball making the last season of What We Do in the Shadows. He is also proud of Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, now streaming and available on Blu-ray—and not to be confused with the other current remake of the German silent classic. Doug is as nice as he is talented, and Leonard and Jessie are delighted to have him on the podcast.  

This week, like the sand-people of Arrakis and Beetlejuice audiences before us, we're afraid of worms (worms!) as guest Rachel Hadaway (of Rachel's Chart Chat on The People Are The Enemy) goes for a steeply inclined stroll with us to breathe the mountain air in beautiful Nelson, Washington as circle back to the coziness of the Steve Martin rom-com. It's 1987's Roxanne, directed by Fred Schepisi, written by Steve Martin, and starring Martin opposite Daryl Hannah, Shelley Duvall, Rick Rossovich, John Kapelos, Fred Willard, Michael J. Pollard, Damon Wayans and of course Nelson, British Columbia, which almost played itself! A landmark 80s film for Canadians seeing their country onscreen, north of the border it seems more beloved for its locations than its clever reworking of Cyrano de Bergerac for a modern context. But this is a funny movie with a romance that works, brought to us from the dusty DVR box of a long-time booster of our show who we were happy to finally bring on! Plus: As we put Halloween season behind us, Justin goes deep on the truly terrible Blade: Trinity. A lifelong fan of comic books, comic strips, science fiction, and Star Trek, he drifted towards writing and editing, encouraged by his father and inspired by Superman's alter ego, Clark Kent.While at SUNY-Binghamton, Greenberger wrote and edited for the college newspaper, Pipe Dream. Upon graduation, he worked for Starlog Press and while there, created Comics Scene, the first nationally distributed magazine to focus on comic books, comic strips, and animation.In 1984, he joined DC Comics as an Assistant Editor and went on to be an Editor before moving to Administration as Manager-Editorial Operations. He joined Gist Communications as a Producer before moving to Marvel Comics as its Director-Publishing Operations.Greenberger rejoined DC in May 2002 as a Senior Editor-Collected Editions. He helped grow that department, introducing new formats and improving the editions' editorial content. In 2006, he joined Weekly World News as its Managing Editor until the paper's untimely demise. He then freelanced for an extensive client base including Platinum Studios, scifi.com, DC and Marvel. He helped revitalize Famous Monsters of Filmland and served as News Editor at ComicMix.com.He is a member of the Science Fiction Writers of America and the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers. His novelization of Hellboy II: The Golden Army won the IAMTW's Scribe Award in 2009.In 2012, he received his Master of Science in Education from the University of Bridgeport and relocated to Maryland where he has taught High School English in Baltimore County. He completed his Master of Arts degree in Creative Writing & Literature for Educators at Fairleigh Dickinson University in 2016.With others, he cofounded Crazy 8 Press, a digital press hub where he continues to write. His dozens of books, short stories, and essays cover the gamut from young adult nonfiction to original fiction. Good tidings! This week's episode is about Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) dir. Guillermo del Toro and what else is there to say? Just your regular Hellboy II: The Golden Army episode. I mean, would you not expect us to talk about Hellboy II: The Golden Army in the Hellboy II: The Golden Army episode?

Believe it or not they made a sequel - to positive results! Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, Hellboy II: The Golden Army is the sequel to the 2004 film Hellboy. Ron Perlman reprises his starring role as Hellboy - the character created by Mike Mignola. Luke and Jae revisit the world of Hellboy, years before it was unsuccessfully rebooted. Hellboy (Ron Perlman), his pyrokinetic girlfriend, Liz (Selma Blair), and aquatic empath, Abe Sapien (Doug Jones), face their biggest battle when an underworld prince (Luke Goss) plans to reclaim Earth for his magical kindred. Tired of living in the shadow of humans, Prince Nuada tries to awaken an ancient army of killing machines to clear the way for fantasy creatures to roam free. Only Hellboy can stop the dark prince and prevent humanity's annihilation.

It's a very special episode of Double Edged Double Bill. Adam and Thomas are celebrating three years of double featuring on the show! We break down 2008's Hellboy II: The Golden Army. What do we mean when we call a film "epic"? Does this qualify? How much better is this than the original Hellboy film, and how much does that matter?

This time, we we look at the 2013 sleeper hit with our Pacific Rim film review, and along the way we ask if the giant Jaegers are actually possible? Does Ron Perlman play the best character in the film? Finally, we examine Pacific Rim's complicated legacy. Let's dive in… Pacific Rim Movie Cast and Crew Written and Directed by Guillermo del Toro: Del Toro came into the project almost by accident as he was pitching a different movie, an adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft story At the Mountain of Madness, but when this didn't materialize, he read the story treatment for Pacific Rim developed by Travis Beacham and immediately signed on to direct the film. Charlie Hunnam as Raleigh Becket: At the time, Hunnam had achieved popularity after starring as the lead character on the FX series Sons of Anarchy. He had previously been considered for a role in a past del Toro film, Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Rinko Kikuchi as Mako Mori: Kikuchi had risen to international fame following her Oscar nominated performance in Babel and has remained a star in Asian cinema in the years since Pacific Rim. Idris Elba as Stacker Pentecost: Elba has had a varied and impressive career over the past 20 years. From roles on shows like The Wire, Luther and The Office as well as films like Thor, The Jungle Book (2016) and Beasts of No Nation. The role of Pentecost was originally offered to Tom Cruise who declined due to conflicts in his shooting schedule. Also Starring: Charlie Day as Dr. Newton Geiszler Ron Perlman as Hannibal Chau Robert Kazinsky as Chuck Hansen Max Martini as Hercules Hansen Clifton Collins, Jr as Tendo Choi The Odd Journey to Pacific Rim The production of Pacific Rim actually began in 2006 when screenwriter Travis Beacham conceived of a film where giant robots battled giant monsters. While basic, the concept evolved over the next several years until he had a 25 page treatment. Then, in 2010, Guillermo del Toro was announced to be directing the aforementioned H.P. Lovecraft film, but this project was ultimately cancelled after del Toro was unwilling to compromise on the film's budget as well as the eventual “R” rating for that film. Following that cancellation, del Toro partnered with Beacham to continue working on the script for the next year. Finally, in 2012, del Toro and his team were able to begin shooting and the schedule was hectic to say the least. Del Toro is notorious for the control he exerts over his productions. He often does not employ a second unit to shoot scenes that do not include principal actors or prominent scenes, but due to a condensed shooting schedule, he had no choice but to utilize a creative scheme to get his movie completed. He decided to use what he called a “splinter unit” that would arrive on set prior to the main schedule that included several actors and crew members and they would work on off days in the production. Del Toro also worked eighteen hours per day as well as encouraged improvisation and looser movements. In addition to the crazy production cycle, the post-production cycle was also tumultuous with a last minute decision to convert the film to 3D which added 9 months to the post-production schedule. When Can We Get a Jaeger? Obviously, the literal big technology on display in Pacific Rim is that of the Jaegers, the gigantic twin piloted robots that have been built to battle the monstrous Kaiju that are emerging from the Pacific Ocean. Is the technology currently available to develop these giant robots? In short, no and there are very compelling reasons why it's not. For starters, the sheer size of the Jaegers. Just because something is bigger, doesn't mean that it's better. The amount of energy needed to move these robots would be staggering and would actually be weaker than say a robot of regular human proportions. In addition, there aren't any materials that are strong enough to create the ultra-tough Jaegers.
