This Day in Legal History: Alabama Ten commandments MonumentOn August 28, 2003, the Supreme Court of Alabama removed a 5,280-pound granite monument of the Ten Commandments from the rotunda of the state courthouse in Montgomery. The monument had been installed two years earlier by Chief Justice Roy Moore, who argued it reflected the moral foundation of U.S. law. However, its religious nature sparked immediate controversy and litigation. In Glassroth v. Moore, three attorneys sued in federal court, asserting that the display violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. The U.S. District Court ruled in their favor, ordering the monument's removal.Moore refused to comply with the court's order, prompting further legal and administrative actions. The Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the lower court's decision, finding the monument's placement unconstitutional. When Moore continued to defy the federal ruling, the Judicial Inquiry Commission of Alabama brought ethics charges against him. The Alabama Court of the Judiciary subsequently removed Moore from office for failing to uphold the rule of law.The case underscored the constitutional limits on religious expression by public officials and reinforced federal supremacy in matters of constitutional interpretation. It also intensified national debates over the role of religion in public life and the meaning of the Establishment Clause. Moore would later regain the position of Chief Justice in 2013, only to be suspended again for defying federal law, this time over same-sex marriage.You will, of course, also remember that Roy Moore–in addition to being a huge fan of the Ten Commandments–is plausibly accused of misconduct involving multiple women, including allegations of sexual assault by three women—two of whom were minors at the time. Leigh Corfman alleged Moore assaulted her when she was 14 and he was 32, and Beverly Young Nelson accused Moore of assaulting her when she was 16. Six additional women have described Moore as behaving inappropriately when they were between 14 and 22 years old. Lost in the Trumpstein cover-up, the Ghislaine Maxwell hostage video, Trump’s planned terrorism in Chicago, the John Bolton raid – Trump's face was so puffy – even for HIM - that his eyes looked like slits, barely open. Right hand with a contusion, clear tape, what could have been traces of blood near the fingers, running from the thumb through the middle finger and up, under the shirtsleeve, badly covered in make-up. Left hand so swollen it looked like something they’d draw for a cartoon character: the BASE of those fingers 40 or 50 percent larger than the ends and his ability to use the hand clearly impaired enough to make him hesitate. And we didn’t see the ankles this time. We saw them when he was in Alaska with Putin and they were wider than his feet. Last time he only lied about his health on every topic from getting a colonoscopy to nearly getting intubated for Covid. Before that his personal doctor said everything except 'he's immortal' then confessed Trump dictated the statement. What's going on? Netanyahu's latest move isn't subtle. He wants Israel to take full control of the Gaza Strip — dismantle Hamas, free hostages, and install a non-Hamas civilian government. On paper, it sounds like a decisive endgame. In practice, it's a minefield. The UN, the UK, and even some of Israel's own military leaders are warning this could be catastrophic, both humanitarian and legal. We're talking about tens of thousands of troops pushing into Gaza City, uprooting a million residents to the south, and expanding a controversial aid network that's already replacing the UN in distribution.I can't say I'm shocked. From the moment October 7th happened, this was always one of the plausible end states — Hamas removed from power entirely. What I didn't anticipate was Iran's weakened state factoring into the timing, or the fact that Israel might see that as a green light to act more aggressively. The trouble is, any operation that moves into the areas where hostages are held risks killing them outright. That's going to split Israel politically, because it forces a brutal question: if you were willing to risk their deaths now, why didn't you do it immediately after the attack?And that's before you even get to the problem of what comes after. Hamas leaders can't make a deal and then just go live quietly in Gaza. They'd have to leave. But where? You don't walk away from martyrdom rhetoric on Monday and spend Tuesday at Mario World in Orlando. Gaza under Hamas isn't just a state — it's a criminal syndicate, and that makes any negotiated exit almost impossible. Which means, if this plan goes forward, it's going to be bloody, messy, and controversial from the start.Trump's Putin PlayTrump's continuing to signal he'll meet with Putin “very soon,” possibly in the UAE. Early talk was that Zelensky would be part of a three-way summit, but Trump has apparently dropped that stipulation. Predictably, the Kremlin is treating this like a win, while critics warn it could legitimize Russia's aggression and undermine NATO. That's the Beltway framing.From what I'm hearing, it's not that simple. Trump has actually been harder on Putin lately than some people realize — moving nuclear subs into range, green-lighting sanctions, and generally signaling that he's done being strung along. This isn't 2018 Helsinki. It might be Trump testing whether Putin will only make a deal after feeling genuine pressure.None of this means a breakthrough is coming. It probably isn't. But it does mean Trump wants to own the narrative — that he's the guy who ends wars through direct negotiation. And until Ukraine or Gaza is resolved, his foreign policy record will feel incomplete. I think he knows that, and I think that's why this meeting's on the table at all.FBI Assisting in Locating Texas DemsIn Texas, the Democratic walkout drama is back, with Senator John Cornyn confirming the FBI is helping locate them. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker is playing host, calling the state's collection of Democrats “refugees,” which is absurd. They're not refugees. They're political props in his own long-term campaign plans.Here's the thing — if you believe in what you're doing, you should want to get arrested. That would make this story bigger, not smaller. It's the most potent form of protest they've got. Instead, they're hiding out in hotels, funded by Beto O'Rourke's PAC, doing nothing to energize the very voters they're supposedly defending.They could be knocking on doors in the districts that are about to be carved up, rallying people who are about to lose representation. If they got dragged back to Austin by Texas Rangers in the middle of that, it'd be front-page news. Instead, we've got photo ops in Chicago. Gary comments on a recent speech by Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker. The governor uses inflammatory rhetoric to disparage (and warn it seems) Republicans about potential reprisals if they continue on their current path. He also refers to those who support President Trump as "quislings" that will not be tolerated.

The House has passed Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill," and it now heads to the Senate.  The F.B.I. has arrested a Milwaukee judge for delibrately helping an illegal immigrant escape being arrested bhy I.C.E..  Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, flat out called for all Democrats to Wage War on Republicans.  The Democrat party continues to fall apart and no effort has been made on their part to fix it.  New York Attorney General, Letitia JAmes, is still under federal investigation for mortage fraud.   Hennepin County attorney, Mary Moriarty, (who told prosecuters to use race on concideration for plea deals), is now under investigation by the D.O.J.. Business tycoon, Warren Buffett, has announced his retirement at the age of 94.  -Thank you for listening!-
