Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain, and a path for the thunderstorm, to water a land where no one lives, an uninhabited desert (Job 38:25-26)Most people didn't view the Great Depression as the best time to launch a toy company. But that's exactly when LEGO, the most successful toy brand of all time, was born.The company's founder, a devout Christian aptly named Ole Kirk Christiansen, had spent years building a traditional carpentry business. But by the early 1930s, business was slumping while his debts were soaring. So he pivoted to making toys like yo-yos, toy cars, and eventually LEGO bricks.And everyone told him he was out of his mind.“I think you're much too good for that, Christiansen,” one friend said. “Why don't you find something more useful to do!” The world was in crisis after all. People needed food, not toys. But Christiansen disagreed. In his own playful life and the life of the business he created to help others play well, Christiansen demonstrated a deep understanding of this truth: We mere Christians can glorify God by embracing fun, beauty, play, and “useless” work because our heavenly Father does the same.That's what we see in today's passage. God says that he sends “torrents of rain...to water a land where no one lives.” Why would God make it rain in an uninhabited desert? Apparently just for the fun of it!Commenting on this verse, theologian Dr. R. Paul Stevens says that God's playful nature should produce in his people a “freedom from the tyranny of utility.” In other words, godly play—not just productivity—pleases God.I'll be the first to admit that I am glacially slow to learning this. But by God's grace I am coming to see that play is productive for my soul and my goals. As Dr. Stuart Brown says, “In the long run, work does not work without play.”If you, like me, are not used to playing, let me encourage you to adopt this practice I recently found very helpful: Take stock of your play history. Ask yourself what you did as a kid or as an adult that felt like play. Based on my study of the work of Dr. Brown and others, I define play as any activity that has these 5 characteristics:I would say I “get” to do it rather than “have” to do itI lose track of time while I'm doing itI can't wait to do it againI can't stop talking about it with othersI have no deadline to complete the activityOnce you've made a list of things that have historically felt like play, schedule 30-90 minutes this week to engage in one of those activities knowing that you, like LEGO's founder, can glorify God as you do!

And thanks to the growing “Financial Independence, Retire Early” FIRE movement, Gen Z plans to retire earlier than any previous generation at the ripe young age of 54.How do these people plan to spend the second half of life? The social media bio of a leader of the FIRE movement is telling to that end: “Mr. Money Mustache was a thirtysomething retiree who now writes about how we can all lead a frugal yet Badass life of leisure.”This idea of trading hard work for endless leisure finds zero support in Scripture. Theologian Dr. R. Paul Stevens puts it bluntly: “there is no concept of retirement in the Bible.”Which is why Paul wrote constantly about the Christian's call to work hard as long as we “go on living in the body.” 1 Corinthians 15:58 is just one example: “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”And let's not forget that while many of us are chasing financial independence, Jesus chased financial dependence (see Matthew 8:20 and Luke 8:2-3). And while many of us are calculating when we can stop working, Jesus said he glorified the Father by finishing the work the Father gave him to do (see John 17:4).God may call you to retire from the work you do for pay. But I guarantee you that he won't call you to retire from “abounding in the work of the Lord.”Now, before you financial advisors reply to this email in outrage, hear this: There is nothing wrong with saving money for a day when you may no longer be able to work for pay. I do! But to call yourself an image bearer of Christ and then trade a productive life with a life of endless leisure is to take the Lord's name in vain. You know how lightbulbs shine brightest just before they burn out? That is a picture of the life of Paul and the life of Christ that you and I are made to image. Resolve to image him well as you seek fruitful labor today and to the very end.

Our guest today is Paul Stevens, the CEO of the Mayflower College. We talked about  standardization of ATC phraseology, how speaking to non-native English speakers is addressed in the training, the role of empathy in speaking with foreigners, communication tips for native English speakers, when to use plain English in ATC, the effect of stress on communication, what changes in communication between ATCOs and pilots we can expect in the future, and our signature question - what will the next 5 and 50 years bring in terms of communication in ATC?

Trending: The American Ultimate Disc League and team New York Empire ! That's right ‘Professional Frisbee' is a big thing and getting bigger. Matthew Stevens, a professional ultimate disc player, for the New York Empire wanted to help his team better reach their potential, so in 2018 he asked his business savvy parents Barbara and Paul Stevens, to come help run his team. They didn't see that coming but they did! Because who says no to their kid? Paul owns a busy real estate construction company in N.Y. and Barbara worked her way up to become the President of a prominant Insurance company with four locations in CT. Paul funds the team and Barbara runs it. (She yells from the stands on game days kinda like Rebecca the team owner in Ted Lasso)  The two of them must know what they're doing because the New York Empire won the championship in 2019 and 2022 and are currently one game out of 1st place this year. Even sister Melissa has joined the operation. The team is 53 and 6. They've won two AUDL Championships and have had two 15-0 perfect seasons. Right now they're the number one team in the AUDL. The AUDL is the 'American Ultimate Disc League ' which has 24 teams in US & Canada. Think fast paced football, soccer and ballet combined.  More like football in that to score, you have to get the disc to someone in the end zone except a player can't run with the disc, he must pass it. (Impressive to me as the last frisbee I threw is still in someone's bushes.) They travel the country competing, and thousands show up for a fun night out. There are 30 players on the roster and four quarters in the game, 12 minutes each. The team also engages the fans who show up with music and what they call ‘activations'. An activation, said Barbara, is when you bring the crowd onto the field to do somehting, either throw a fisbeee or chase a frisbee, any kind for fun for the kids who attend. They even do things like ball hop games, so if you'relooking for someplace to go to entertain your kids this might be it! Depending on their age they even use some kids as disc runners, letting them run up and down the field getting the discs that go out of bounds and throwing them back to the ref. (Too bad my mother didn't know about this when I was a chubby little kid she might have opted for me to chase frisbees vs sending me to dancing school.)  The New York Empire games are very much a fun family atmosphere. The team has even done exibitions at half time for The NY Giants and Minnesota Vikings.  Paul and Barbara Stevens would love more people to come out to their home games. Home base is the Joseph F. Thousands of teachers are striking today, demanding better pay and working conditions. One teacher says the pay increase offered, is a kick in the guts. Teacher and PPTA spokesperson Paul Stevens told Mike Hosking the pay offer is half the rate of inflation, which doesn't cut it. He says the offer is in line with the public sector pay adjustment of $6,000 over two years, which is averaged out to 3.5 percent over three years. Edmund Schiavoni's first-rate, "page-turning" novel 'Pathway To Glory' unfolds when the protagonist, Paul Stevens, attempts to take over the giant corporation that he is the chief financial executive of by boldly initiating a proxy contest against its incumbent management. But he also preached about “the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 4:17). Are these two separate ideas? The world's leading New Testament scholar, N.T. Wright says no: “‘God's kingdom' and ‘kingdom of heaven' mean the same thing.” Understanding that detail will be critical as we enter this series unpacking four half-truths about heaven. Here's the first:Half-Truth #1: Heaven is a place we go to in the futureJesus did say that heaven is a place (see John 14:2). And Scripture also makes it clear that heaven is in the future (see Revelation 11:15). But heaven is so much more than a place in the future.In Matthew 10:7-8, Jesus instructed his disciples: “proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons.”Here, Jesus isn't referring to heaven as a physical place, leading theologian R. Paul Stevens to define the kingdom of heaven as "not a realm [or] territory, but the rule of God as King…essentially the spread of the goodness and shalom of God in the world and in human life." Dallas Willard put it even more succinctly saying heaven is “where what God wants done is done.”OK, so heaven is a place and a state of affairs. And not just in the future, but also in the present. Jesus said, “the kingdom of God is at hand” (Mark 1:15) and “has come near” (Matthew 4:17). All of this helps us to replace our half-truth with this whole-truth:Whole-Truth #1: Heaven is a place and a state of affairs where God rules as king both now and laterN.T. Wright summarized this idea well by saying that “‘Entering the kingdom of heaven' does not mean ‘going to heaven after death', but belonging in the present to the people who steer their earthly course by the standards and purposes of heaven…and who are assured of membership in the age to come.”This means that you can make your place of work more like heaven today. Jesus told us to pray “your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). This morning, I'd encourage you to replace “on earth” with your place of work and begin the work of applying Jesus's descriptions of the kingdom to your workplace today.

And the amazing thing about this God is that he condescends to come right into the midst of our mundane, messy worlds of home, work and play as the stage where this ‘holy' work occurs.” Each week we will discover how God is at work forging Jacob's identity in the midst of a very dysfunctional and fragmented family, one that may be strikingly similar to our own.
