Emerging as Phase Fatale in 2014, Berlin-based DJ, producer and label owner, Hayden Payne is rewriting the discourse of Techno with his cross-pollination of gnarly basslines, sensual narratives and mind-control mechanics. Demonstrating his vision through an authentic, highly curated sonic-lens of techno, Payne's rhythmic excursions draw on both his roots in the New York and Berlin underground as well as his reputable experience performing to dancefloors globally. Exemplified by long-standing tenures as a resident for esteemed institutions such as Berghain as well as KHIDI in Georgia's capital Tbilisi, Payne demonstrates a resolute understanding of harnessing club synergy across his productions and DJ sets. With three full length albums under his belt, including the 2020 sophomore release ‘Scanning Backwards' on Berghain's Ostgut Ton, Payne's sonic signature pushes the boundaries of techno sensibilities and reflects the zeitgeist whilst staying true to his own vision. Wasting no time since his solo project's inception to showcase his expert sonic ability, Payne has toured globally performing at renowned clubs and festivals worldwide, releasing numerous records on labels including Jealous God, Ostgut Ton, and his own label BITE. Payne co-launched the BITE imprint in 2018 as a means to platform cutting-edge sound production across a diverse roster of international artists. Along with fellow Soft Crash protagonist Pablo Bozzi pioneering ‘Italo Body Music', BITE's seminal synthesis of curated techno solidifies the label as a tour de force taste-maker within electronic music with showcases worldwide including Berghain and their 5 year anniversary compilation ‘Shedding Skin' in 2023. Hailing from post-punk roots, Payne draws on his depth of musical knowledge and multitude of influences. His merging of nuanced references and high concept narratives remain geared towards the dancefloor at its core, subtleties of his multifarious sonic palette act as the foundations for his layered wall of sound. The Berghain resident talks about re-queering the goth scene, exploring a lighter side of his sound and preparing for marathon closing sets. Hayden Payne, AKA Phase Fatale, grew up fully immersed in the world of music; his dad is a recording engineer and musician, as are many members of his family. After joining post-punk outfits like Dream Affair and consuming a diet of new wave and synth from parties like Wierd in New York, Payne eventually relocated to Berlin, where he saw possibilities emerge around ways of fusing guitar music with sounds for the dance floor. It was only shortly after relocating that he landed a residency at Berghain and began releasing his own productions as a techno artist, becoming known for darker-edged sets and productions that fuse industrial, EBM and techno. In this episode of the RA Exchange, he talks to senior producer Chloe Lula about all of this and more, like "re-queering" the goth scene; exploring a lighter side of his sound with his Italo duo, Soft Crash; his label, BITE Records; and sustaining strong ties to dance floors in Kyiv and Tbilisi, two cities that he reflects as being refreshingly socially and politically motivated for queer artists living in the margins. His new EP as Soft Crash, NRG, is out now. Listen to the episode in full.

We start the weekend off with a bang today, as we welcome the most excellent Under Black Helmet to soundtrack our Friday as he contributes to our Global Mix series. The Lithtuanian DJ and producer Under Black Helmet is no stranger to our shores, featuring regularly for Dublin based club night and label, Research over the years. Having moved to London in 2011 and being inspired by the local scene, he started producing techno and has remained faithful to the genre ever since. A protegee of Moerbeck's expanding Code Is Law platform, the artist's surge into the shadowy realm of dance music was further supported by Bas Mooy's MORD label, helping him to showcase his productions for the world to see. He has established himself in today's techno scene as a force to be reckoned with, playing at monumental parties and clubs around the world, alongside the likes of Dax J, Phase Fatale, Stanislav Tolkachev, Jeff Mills and Rebekah week in week out, while releasing some of our favourite techno records in the process. We are absolutely delighted to welcome Under Black Helmet to our Global Mix series, as he delivers a meticulous and hypnotic hour of rolling techno. We welcome DJ Tool, Hyperaktivist and Nayme who together form the Berlinbased collective Mala Junta. Offering an escape and a safe bonding place for the German capital's queer scene, the group highlight the values of inclusivity, support, friendship and community, and feature a diverse music mix of the faster, funkier, grooving old school techno, effortlessly blended with psychedelic trance and breaks. Their ideals for family and community are further instilled by their strict limited capacity events, making Mala Junta one of Berlin’s best kept rave secrets. In this chat with Nayme, Ana Laura (Hyperaktivist) and Jo-Jo (DJ TOOL) we found out how the three bonded together and became friends well beyond the dancefloor and the events they have been organizing. We explore what it takes to embody and support diversity and inclusion and how dealing with challenging situations is an opportunity to lead by example. We address why we should all be talking openly about hard problems, and - between a few wine glasses and a laugh - we remind ourselves that there is something we all need now more than ever: more humanity, music and connection with each other. Christoph Heinze, better known as Inhalt der Nacht joins us for our next exclusive Home of Sound podcast. Berlin-born, his sound has been shaped by influences from cold wave and new wave, blended seamlessly with elements of the rock music that he was exposed to in his younger days. Having already established his name as one of the most progressive DJ’s in his genre, Christoph has pioneered his own label: Lebendig from which he pushes fellow Dj’s and artists’ productions alongside his own. 2019 saw Christoph’s track “Dosis'' spread through the underground scene of Berlin like wildfire after it appeared on the compilation album “The World of Monom Black” put out by the illustrious Dax J and his eponymous label . Christoph’s eminence nowadays has granted him residency to some of the biggest clubs across Germany including Griessmühle Berlin, Khidi Tbilisi and Rote Sonne Munich In this chat Christoph talks us through his experiences playing and producing techno and also his experimental explorations with theatre scoring in Cuba and eventually in Germany. We delve into Christoph’s past, recounting his first experiences with the underground scene as well the music that influenced him and provided the foundations to his raw and unbound resonate that we know today. We also look at labels and how artists are nurtured around them, and we get first hand insight into how he became resident of Rote Sonne, Griessemhule and Khidi and get a sense of the ever evolving drive of this artist toward fresh and non conventional sounds. Electric Indigo is a longstanding DJ, producer, composer and musician who started her path into the electronic scene in the early 90s and has since played in over 40 countries around the world. Aside from a long string of releases and gigs under her belt, Electric Indigo is also the founder of female:pressure, an international support network and online database for female, non-binary and non conforming gender artists. Her music and contribution has earned her wide and deep respect from the international music scene that has taken her to play in a long list of well established clubs as well as winning awards such as the “outstanding artist award Musik 2012” and the Kunstpreis Musik 2020 from The Republic of Austria. In this chat, we discover the artists early entry point into the techno scene, as she fortuitously interviewed Underground Resistance members, her work at iconic vinyl store Hardwax in Berlin in the early 90s and her experience running a label and playing throughout three decades. We also find out more about female:pressure and their research project “FACTS survey” which quantifies gender composition of music festivals and events line-ups since 2012. We discuss about the many challenges that non-male, non-white artists may face when working in the music industry, and we leave inspired by Electric Indigo’s take on tackling these challenges with open communication and joint committment with artists, promoters and music lovers. Loyal to the concept of ‘Magick’ rituals and with a deeply ideological approach towards darkness and the chaos in performance arts, the interdisciplinary collective prepares a very limited release of USB metallic vessels in a special box, including an anniversary booklet with photography by Natalia Evelyn Bencicova. In order to address the Liber Null experience, we selected 40 artists who performed at our events over the years. We value each and every collaboration and are thankful to have collaborated with an endless amount of sorceries from all eras and corners of the globe. The hope to inspire even more creatures to dig for the occult is reassured by this meaningful journey crafted by those who we consider as masters of Magick. 13th Moon, 3.14, AN-I, ANFS, Aktion Mutante, Alekzandra, Alessandro Adriani, Artik, Blakk Harbor, Blush Response, Cardinal And Nun, Celldöd, Claudio PRC, Common Poetry, D. American Phase Fatale is one of the residents responsible for defining the current Berghain sound. As well as regular DJ sets in the Berlin techno dungeon, his latest album, 'Scanning Backwards' — which was released on in-house label Ostgut Ton last month — was made with the cavernous club in mind. Just like his arresting DJ sets take influence from post punk, EBM and industrial, the album also looks outside techno's usual borders: snippets of speech, "brain-penetrating instrumentation" and plenty of raw textures all inform its grooves and make for a hugely visceral listen. On this week's mix, he serves up an uncompromising set of angular rhythms, doom laden synths and fizzing techno that is perfect for the darkest dance floors out there. Importantly, there are still nuances along the way despite the pumping machismo of it all. They keep you on the edge of your seat as the dystopian drama unfolds and all consuming bleakness draws you ever deeper into a world devoid of human life forms. It's beautiful brutality from start to finish.

Video : https://youtu.be/JO6KnKtYdqQ Follow and support @opakdj Interview : Virtual Underground: How has this Opäk story started ? Opäk : I made acoustic music since was young. I play drums and I did a conservatory before starting to play blues / rock / punk with my friends! Then when I went to university, these projects ended, we were all in different cities. I made new friends, all techno fan. I did my first techno nights.... During one, when i was in party in front of "I hate models" at his beginnings, I knew that this was somehow the new essence of punk. So after started with playing with my first little pioneer mixing table and a computer, the Opäk project was born. Virtual Underground : Where do you draw your inspiration from ? Opäk : I find my inspiration in all the music that has nourished me from my childhood to here. From rock to metal, from blues to stoner, from EBM to Techno, from Techno to Acid, from industrial to hardcore. I often define myself as a "Industrial Techno " artist but in the end, I think the richness is to open up my influences as much as possible! if I have to name names that I have listened to a lot I will say The Doors, Rage Against The Machine, Official Motörhead, The Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson then in techno I Hate Models, RVDE, Gijensu, Ancient Methods, Phase Fatale, Tommy Four Seven, Ansome, Ayarcana, Myler, TWAN and many other artists in the same genre. Virtual Underground : Could you describe your mixing process ? Opäk : For me the role of the DJ is like that of the sculptor, he must shape the atmosphere and take people on his journey. As a story it is important to have a beginning, a middle and a logical end, so the selection is made in such a way as to respect this narrative scheme! Then of course the best is to perceive only slightly the transitions between the tracks and that they bring a new breath to the set. Virtual Underground : Which software/hardware did you use for this set ? Opäk : I used CDJs and a DJM900 and then I equalized the mix on bleachton so that the audio quality and the feeling was pleasant, simply ahaha Virtual Underground : What are your next plans ? Opäk : What I prefer for the moment is the "show and concert" part I like to perform in search of people, their opinions, emotions. This is the area where I am most comfortable and very beautiful dates like the pulse festival, Entente nocturne arrive. I also created my own label: Askorn Records, which I intend to develop, and finally I am working hard to improve and work to release my first EP which should arrive in 2020.

It's June the weather is HOT like our new Podcast from MOODY. Moody is a French DJ who founded Lunacy in November 2014, an organization that runs parties which brought his favorite artists to his hometown, Nantes. Ø [Phase], Headless Horseman, Phase Fatale, NX1, Ancient Methods, Dax J, Kwartz, Sleeparchive, Jeroen Search, Sinfol, Ayarcana and many more were on the bill. He is inspired by a raw and industrial techno, bringing his strong EBM / post-punk influences to make striking performance with some outstanding technical skills - and many hours spent digging in European record shops. Moody rides many big spots in France therefore it begins to have a solid reputation by trying to bring the vision of the party as it perceives. Crude and manifold. Enjoy !
