Today's episode celebrates the publication of Floral Culture and the Tudor and Stuart Courts, ed. Susannah Lyon-Whaley (Amsterdam University Press, 2024).These interdisciplinary essays engage with flowers as real, artificial, and represented objects across the Tudor and Stuart courts in gardens, literature, painting, interior furnishing, garments, and as jewels, medicine, and food. If the rose operated as a particularly English lingua franca of royal power across two dynasties, this volume sheds light on an array of wild and garden flowers to offer an immersive picture of how the Tudor and Stuart courts lived and functioned, styled and displayed themselves through flowers. Today's episode is all about the pomes! Tune in for our discussion with Matt Kaminsky, aka Gnarly Pippins, on the topic of wild/feral/seedling apples. Matt is a fruit explorer and orchardist who specializes in feral trees that kick it on the sides of highways, edges, and other forgotten places without any management from humans. Why are these trees important? Seedling apples and other pome fruits (like pears) that grow in these edge ecosystems are frequently much more resistant to the many pests and diseases that affect their cultivated cousins in commercial and organic orchards. The genetic diversity of these feral fruits is astounding. There is a movement of like minded fruit hunters who have started to champion these trees in recent years, and Matt is one of these folks. This episode cannot be missed! Check out the links below to learn more about the topics discussed in the episode. Your girls committed a mutiny this week! We sped through the pay-per-view matches at a breakneck speed, covering such topics as Why The Elite Are Being Silenced, What's The Hell Is Going On With The Four Match, Where Does Eddie Think He's Going, and How Is Hangman/Mox The Only Reason We're Buying The PPV? It doesn't matter—none of it matters. Who cares! What's really important is that Producer Marjorie gave us nine random names, and out of them, we fashioned a Fellowship of The Ring. Is Dave Meltzer going to give you an intellectual debate over whether Shida makes a good Gimli? We don't think so!

This week I had the privilege of speaking with Brigitte and Chris Norton, parents to the late artist Charles Norton. The Norton family orchestrated an exhibit at the High Line Nine to profile Charles' work called "The Pippins: Dilemma of Colors" which features a collection of approximately 57 Pippin drawings and 21 corresponding poems, each featuring a satirical character known as a Pippin. Charles battled with severe depression and mental health issues leading to his death in July 2019 at 24 years old. Despite his young age, Charles left his family with a prolific body of work including drawings, illustrations, sketches, poetry, and paintings. The show is designed to raise mental health awareness and to support Project Healthy Minds, a nonprofit dedicated to breaking the stigma on mental health and providing access to resources for those who are struggling. Make sure to check out the exhibit before the end of February 2022. In this episode, Chris and Brigitte speak about the symbolism of the Pippins and Charles' mental health struggles, how to help someone when they're suffering, how they grieved the loss of their son, and why its crucial to end the stigma surrounding metal health. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/stella-stephanopoulos/support

Episode #50: I had a chance to sit down with Donna Pippins and ask her about her journey into the Financial Service industry. Donna is an AVP with Appreciation Financial, a 100K Ring Earner, and a consistent member of the 10K and 25K club. So what is the secret that Donna uses to be so successful in this industry? Is it because she has the best strategy, the most amount of industry knowledge, and is a savage when it comes to sales? Actually it's quite the contrary. Donna gets in relationships with her clients, connects emotionally, and says to "just be human". Please join this H.O.T. conversation to find out what that acronym stands for. You will be glad you did!Bio:Donna Pippins came to Appreciation Financial from the corporate and nonprofit world nearly 6 years ago, looking for freedom. Freedom from the 9-5 grind and freedom from a job where she made a good living but no longer felt passion for what she was doing. She wasn’t looking for financial services but soon realized it offered her a way to do what she loves –help and educate people, connect them to resources, and make a difference. Now she gets to work with other leaders committed to their own growth and success, while she ensures that her future is secure. Contact Donna:Email: dpippins@appreciationfinancial.comWebsite

This week on The Easy Chair, I read aloud another wonderful short story (fitting, as it is officially Short Story Month) by author Thomas Pierce. Pierce gives us a poignant, funny, and illuminating story about Val, a surly, medically fragile twelve-year-old who is obsessed with Pippin monkeys. The story is narrated by his mother's boyfriend, an affable yet cynical dude who has signed on to take Val to the local zoo to see some Pippins- but by acting responsibly, loses their place in the exhibition line. There's a whole lot going on in both backstory and subtext over this fraught day, and it's not clear whose running the show. Or maybe it is. Yes, I realize that there hasn't been a new episode in MONTHS! But here I am. In the episode, I speak more about the lapse in new episodes and announce a relaunch of the show on September 1st of this year. I want to bring you the best content I can create and right now I need a little time to make it great. I also want to know if you prefer that Creative Playdate have it's own social media accounts or if keeping everything through my own personal, illustration accounts works for you. If you have an opinion on that or on anything else you'd like to see me do with the show, please get in touch any way you like! On to the episode! Today's interview is with the wonderful illustrator and author, Andrea Pippins. She is passionate about empowering young girls and also about helping us all create our own communities for support and inspiration. She even wrote a book about it, called We Inspire Me. Andrea recently moved to Stockholm, Sweden ahead of the birth of her son. We talk about what it was like to leave her family when she was about to have a child and how she has been able to find some support and community in a new country. We also talk about her hopes for her son's childhood both in Sweden and anywhere else they may live in the future. Our conversation really reminded me how important it is to have people around you for support and creative inspiration. We ALL need a creative community around us.
