Listen to it on your favourite podcast streaming platforms now.Dmart, the retail group in India, is absolutely number one on vision, execution, and consistency. Dmart opened its first supermarket in Mumbai's Powai suburb in 2002. Like Walmart in the US, it adopted a deep discounting strategy, offering its customers low prices every day. Today, it has 381 stores. In spite of offering its customers the deepest discounts, Dmart's net profit numbers beat the best among its global peers.Yet analysts and investors have been becoming increasingly bearish of Dmart's future strategy. They argue that what got it from 2002 to 2024 might not necessarily take it to, say, 2034.One big reason is quick commerce. Armies of underpaid contract delivery workers rushing from dark stores managed by notionally independent owners on behalf of younger companies like Zomato, Swiggy, Zepto, Big Basket, and even Flipkart are challenging the conventional wisdom on retail.Forcing Dmart to pause and blink. What should it do? Stick to what it knows and does best? Or learn new digital and delivery tricks in its middle age? With only an estimated 5% of the $500 billion urban market for food and groceries currently penetrated by organised and modern retail, the way Dmart goes has profound implications for India. To discuss this, hosts Rohin Dharmakumar and Praveen Gopal Krishnan invited Govind Shrikhande, former managing director of Shoppers Stop overseeing all its formats, including Shoppers Stop, Hypercity, Crossword, Homestop, Beauty Formats – MAC, Estee Lauder, Air Port & Duty Free Retail etc. Govind has spent over 40 years in the retail sector, having been part of the launches of Denim and Arrow, the relaunch of Vivaldi and the turnaround of Shoppers Stop. He is currently an Independent Director on the Board of a few Companies and a mentor to a few start-ups.Our other guest is Seetharaman G. This week on 'Has It Aged Well?' we shall not lie, because the film we're discussing is David Dhawan's 'Kyokii...Main Jhuth Nahi Bolta'. Joining Abbas and Urjita for the episode is stand-up comedian Fatima Ayesha. Topics discussed include: The weird spelling of the title, how much of the film is actually a copy of Jim Carrey's 'Liar Liar', the genius of Satish Kaushik, the height difference between Govinda and Sushmita Sen, how many law arguments from this film will accurately hold up in court, why so many Govinda films from that era were shot in Hiranandani, Powai and a lot more. Last fortnight, DMart reported ₹11.3K Cr of quarterly revenue, clocking a 25% YoY growth, putting it on track for ~₹40K Cr of annual revenue. Radhakishan Damani was a stock trader in Dalal Street. In the 80s, he was head-to-head with Harshad Mehta. Mr D lost big with Apollo Tyres - his first encounter with Harshad. But Damani is not a man to accept defeat easily. Damani learnt the art of trading under Manu Manek - the cobra of D-Street. By the turn of the century, Damani was doing significantly well for himself as a trader. He had won the battle against Harshad, been a value investor alongside Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, and an early predictor of HDFC Bank's supreme success. Yet, he felt anxious to start a business that brought value to Indian consumers for every rupee they spent. D-Mart was born, with its first store in Powai. Since then, it took eight years to grow to 10 stores, but only 5 years for the next 50 stores. It IPOed in 2017, and thereafter never touched the offer price again. With strong unit economics, focus on frugality and high customer satisfaction, will DMart continue being the blue-eyed boy of Dalal Street? In this episode, I invited Abhijeet Anand - Founder of abCoffee, a brand which is on a mission to bring specialty coffee to every Indian at affordable rates. Specialty premium coffee is not yet mainstream in India. The Indian middle class doesn't consume freshly brewed coffee on a daily basis. The prime reason? It is extremely costly. Abhijeet understood that, when he went on a trail across India to taste coffee brewed in different parts of the country. And that's how the idea of abCoffee was born. With abCoffee, Abhijeet wants to democratize specialty coffee. He wants to brew premium coffee that caters to the Indian palate. abCoffee is unique in the sense that it's not a café or a restaurant but a 'deck' where you can come in, grab your coffee, meet new people & be on your way. As for Abhijeet, I think he is the perfect representation of the brand. Young. Energetic. Passionate. Agile. Talking to him was an absolute pleasure & after recording this episode I had the chance to meet him in person & I got my hands on their Classic Cold Coffee, which was absolutely amazing! We spoke about a range of topics on this episode like: (02:53) – The mysterious man & his journey: Abhijeet Anand (04:44) – What were the events that led Abhijeet to start his own venture? (07:49) – Planning 15 years into the future & working backwards – what is AA's modus operandi? (11:50) – When were the seeds to start a specialty coffee chain sown in AA's mind? (22:28) – A trail across the heart of India to validate the idea for abCoffee (28:45) – Harnessing technology to engineer a cup of coffee + introducing a culture of ‘Grab & Go' (36:48) – What is a Coffee deck? (41:25) – Execution, Execution, Execution (46:13) – What are the BLOCKERS to Growth? (49:17) – Coffee myths & fun facts (55:29) – abCoffee: The story behind the name If you're based out in Mumbai I would really recommend checking out their Coffee decks @ Versova & Powai!

Live everyday list its a new day. How do you center yourself? They say you teach what you need to learn -- Acharya Arun Gossai is a living, breathing example of that. Son of Leila Gossai and the late Shri Prakash Gossai, Arun’s own spiritual journey began in 2011 where, after working in finance for a few years, he felt an unyielding wish to study Vedanta -- the science of the higher Self. He quickly nourished that desire by joining the Chinmaya Mission at the Sandeepany Sadhanalaya Ashram in Powai, Mumbai. He completed rigorous training of various scriptures including the Upanishads, Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, Shrimad Bhagavatam and Ramacharitamanasa and returned to New York in 2013 to foster habits and practices with youth that encourage positive transformation to reach their potential. Today, Arunji is the Spiritual Leader of Bhuvaneshwar Mandir, where he imparts the knowledge of Vedanta to all ages. He also facilitates seminars on stress and time management, public speaking, and meditation and yoga. He invites all to join these enriching and approachable classes as they not only encourage the beginner, but challenge the most advanced student to utilize their mind as a sacred space. When asked what he attributes his selfless nature to, Arun says, “I teach because it empowers others and myself to be better students of life.” #faith #AbeeChunesRadio #ACR #motivation #inspiration #life --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/abeechunes/support

Today is Friday, so of course, I’m going to talk about some Fab Food Folks in just a minute. And share some awesome popcorn flavourings you can make at home and while enjoying a horror movie marathon. I mean it is Friday the 13th - Bwahahahaha! It’s not exactly breaking news that we should be trying to eat organic as much as possible to avoid the deadly pesticides sprayed on produce and fed to livestock. That’s why it’s really cool that so many farmer’s markets are coming up across the city and that too on the weekends. This means you can actually visit them, shop at leisure, interact with some really interesting people doing wonderful things in the space of organic, vegan and what I call FREE FOOD: sugar-free, oil-free, gluten-free, dairy-free and of course, guilt-free because cruelty-free and try out delicious snacks and drinks made from healthy and natural ingredients. These markets are held on the weekend at Malad, Powai, Juhu, Chembur, Bandra, Cuffe Parade, Birla Kreeda Kendra in Girgaon, and Versova. Some are on Saturday and most are on Sunday. They’re usually open in the morning and shut by lunch time. I’ll be sharing exact timings, location, address and contact info for each market on my Facebook page, just look for The Heart Chef, I’ll be sending across the link on whatsapp. Ok so let’s not forget it’s Friday the 13th, and what’s better to snack on during a horror movie marathon that homemade popcorn? But popcorn can get boring. And there’s only so much butter you can drizzle before it starts to taste like a heart attack waiting to happen. So here are some interesting popcorn flavourings you can whip up at home, either making a couple of different batches or keep trying all till you find your fave: So you can either go simply salty, or sweet, or spicy, or sour or you could make killer combos! A sweet and salty one like salted caramel, or a sweet and spicy one such as sweet chilli, or a sweet and not so spicy one like brown sugar, cinnamon and a dash of tabasco, and oh my god, a sweet and sour one with dried mango powder, you know, amchur and either brown sugar or jaggery powder, and for those who like walking that thin line between pleasure and pain, you can go hot and sour – with lemon juice-chilli powder, or vinegar and red chilli powder. You can play with so many permutations and combinations of these, and experiment with more ingredients, the possibilities are endless. No more crappy microwave popcorn! Freedom from carcinogenic gunk that tastes good but lines your arteries for a looooong time. You know what you need to do for the popcorn-flavouring recipes, just hop on over to THC’s Facebook pg or whatsapp me your email address and say POPCORN FLAVOURING RECIPES. That was it for today’s episode, catch you on Sunday where we will Take It Easy and celebrate all the different harvest & spring festivals of India. Plus, I’ll be launching a cuke-lear attack on boring ways to eat cucumber. Because there’s at least 5 different ways to enjoy this water-rich member of the gourd family, and I’m going to share them with you. You have a good start to the weekend and I’ll talk to you next on Sunday. This is me, Simona - The Heart Chef signing off with a big hug. From my heart to yours.
