The headlines of the day by The Indian ExpressThis is the Catch up on 3 Things by the Indian Express and I am Ichha SharmaToday is the 27th of May and here are today's headlinesFor the first time, Operation Sindoor — the military strike launched by India earlier this month against terror targets in Pakistan — employed the concept of “red teaming” as part of its operational planning, The Indian Express has learnt. Red teaming involves embedding a small group of experts familiar with the adversary's mindset, tactics and response patterns into the planning process. Their role is to critically challenge the plan, simulate enemy reactions, and help test the robustness of the intended military strategy. According to sources, this is the first time the Indian military has tested this concept in an actual operation, marking a shift in India's strategic doctrine, bringing in a more dynamic and anticipatory approach to such cross-border operations. The Supreme Court Tuesday issued notice to the Centre and states on a petition challenging the Waqf Act, 1995. A bench of Chief Justice of India B R Gavai and Justice A G Masih issued the notice on the plea by Delhi resident Nikhil Upadhyay, and tagged it with a similar petition by Advocate Hari Shankar Jain and another person. Hearing writ petitions challenging the recent amendments made to the Waqf Act, the bench of Chief Justice of India B R Gavai and Justice Masih had earlier asked why the 1995 Act is being challenged now after so many years. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Tuesday placed Maharashtra's Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri districts under ‘red' alert for the next 24 hours, while Raigad has been kept under an ‘orange' alert. While the ‘red' alert in Mumbai comes to an end today morning, generally cloudy skies, moderate spell of rainfall, accompanied by thunder, lightning, and gusty winds at isolated places will continue throughout the day. In the past 24 hours, the IMD's observatories at Mumbai's Colaba and Santacruz recorded 161.9 mm and 144.2 mm of rainfall – highest 24 hours rainfall recorded since 2021 during the month of May, and second highest in the past decade. According to the BMC, Mumbai's island city recorded 106 mm of rainfall, followed by 72 mm at western suburbs and 63 mm in the eastern suburbs.Even as the Indian Navy and Coast Guard race to contain any oil spill from the MSC Elsa 3 container ship, which sank Sunday, marine biology experts said that authorities must try to contain as much oil and pollution as possible offshore, as onshore clean-up has limitations—especially during the monsoon season. Meanwhile, teams of scientists from the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), under the Agriculture Ministry, have fanned out across three locations on Kerala's coast to collect water and sediment samples to examine onshore impacts.A mass shooting was reported in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park on Monday night which left at least two people dead and nine others wounded, reports stated. Back in 2004, two sisters, Kainaz and Tina Messman, decided to turn their life-long passion for food and baking into a full fledged business. They set up Theobroma, a small cafe tucked away in a corner of Mumbai's posh Colaba. Today, there are more than 200 Theobroma outlets in over 30 cities across the country. The bakery chain's evolution has been nothing short of remarkable. It has managed to build a profitable business that too in a category known to have products with one of the shortest shelf lives. The chain now commands a valuation of well over Rs 3,000 crore. In fact, investors like Chrys Capital, Bain Capital and Carlyle Group are queueing up to buy the 20-year-old brand. But being in the big leagues has meant changing up its strategy. Over the years, Theorobroma has cut down the number of baked and semi-baked items on its menu, and instead filled their shelves with longer lasting products like cookies. It's been able to do that because of its massive, centrally located commissaries. And these strategic shifts have paid off big time. Because now investors are valuing the company at 7-9X its revenue. All of this is good news for its current promoters, the Messman sisters and the private equity investor ICICI Ventures, which invested $20 million between 2017 and 2019. Both are likely to exit with handsome returns. But once that happens, where would that leave Theobroma? Most industry experts say that sailing through with new owners is no picnic. Antonio Xavier Vaz, better known as Chic Chocolate, was a popular jazz musician in Bombay. He also worked as a composer and trumpet player for Hindi film scores. Chic Chocolate and Chris Perry led a two-trumpet barrage at the Green's Hotel. Chic Chocolate was a nightclub performer for most of his career, but he was also a talented film composer, recording and arranging soundtracks for several films. Chic was a successful Bollywood music composer. In 1951, he worked as a music director for the first time on Nadaan. Aa Teri Tasvir Bana Lu by Talat Mahmood and Sari Duniya Ko Piichhe Chodkar by Lata Mangeshkar were two of Nadaan's most popular songs. Chic Chocolate was a part of C. Ramchandra's team. Two of Ramachandra's most popular Bollywood songs are Gore Gore O Banke Chore from Samadhi and Shola Jo Bhadke from Albela. Chic Chocolate is to be credited for these songs. Lata Mangeshkar sang the song Koi Dard Hamara Kya Samjhe in the 1952 film Rangili, on which they collaborated. He is remembered today for his collaboration with Madan Mohan and his work with Naasir in the 1956 film Kar Bhala. Chic worked as the film's assistant music director. The movie Albela featured him in a song sequence with his band dressed in frilly Latin-inspired costumes and a cameo appearance. Chic wore the costumes from the film for his subsequent live performances. Chic and his family, including his wife Martha and their children, lived in a Colaba apartment until he died in May 1967, at 51. Chetan Anand's Aakhri Khat was released shortly after. Several shots in the movie showed Chic Chocolate playing his trumpet from the bandstand during the blues song Rut Jawan. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nallamadras/support

It's all about Mohammed Ali Road, Bombay, Alibaug, Church Gate, Sheikh Abdullah Salem, Raja yoga and Saatvik aahaar in this episode of Sadaaqa. The Al Arfaj family from Kuwait lived a happy life in a penthouse on Mohammed Ali Road in Bombay for many years before shifting to Colaba. The Al Arfaj patriarch started off as a pearl merchant before he diversified his business. His eldest daughter Noura Al Arfaj studied Hindi and Urdu at the Parsi run Anjuman Islamic High School. The summer holidays were great fun spent in the cool climes of Panchgani, Matheran and Deolali. The children's maternal grandfather lived in Alibaug, and the Al Arfaj family spent a lot of time in this green paradise. Noura and Sheikha's maternal grandmother Salma Bawazir, participated in the political movement with Gandhiji after he returned from South Africa. Their maternal uncle Rashid, a Bollywood film producer was married to Dilip Kumar's niece. The Kuwaiti family conversed in Hindi and Urdu, the womenfolk wore sarees and their Arabic dress. Colaba, the southernmost tip of Mumbai, is Mumbai's most iconic neighbourhood. This bustling locality—with the Gateway of India, the world-famous Taj Mahal Hotel, and the Colaba Causeway, a shopper’s paradise—is an unparalleled tourist attraction. But barely 200 years ago, it was a rocky, jackal-infested island, separated from the rest of Bombay by a temperamental creek. In this episode, host Ayushi Mona discusses the compelling biography of the neighbourhood with author Shabnam Minwalla. The podcast much like the book unravels accounts of colonial rivalries and dowry negotiations; and of shrewd industrialists who transformed this doomed island into the centre of trade during the cotton boom of the 1860s. She navigates through the sometimes charming, sometimes seedy streets to track its evolution from a spiritual and recuperative retreat for British soldiers to a coveted residential area for the Brits and Indians alike. In this episode, host Snigdha Sharma is joined by Gaurav Sarkar, Senior Reporter at Mid-Day, along with Newslaundry's Akanksha Kumar. The conversation hits off with the bizarre news stories, from Jeff Bezos' New Shephard to the Tanishq ad controversy. The discussion then moves on to the TRP scam. Gaurav says a certain section of the media, however small, including Newslaundry, should pat themselves on the back for calling out big brands for finding hate-ridden news. He says, pointing to the broader picture, that the TRP scam is an offshoot of the events that preceded the entire fiasco: the SSR case. He talks about how some news channels turned SSR's death into a joke, politicised it and then came their “Trump card, “miss loose cannon Kangana.”Then comes the latest in the Hathras case and how the family of the victim is being hounded by the media. Akanksha tells Snigdha about the ugly exchange that happened between the victims' relatives and the media. Referring to her report, she says, “One must also remember that there are certain media houses who have been looking for some or the other conspiracy theory in the case and also trying to rule out the caste angle. Whereas when you go to the ground, the build up to the crime can be explained only through the prism of caste.”Snigdha moves on to discuss Gaurav's report on Tarun, a 17-year-old autistic child from Colaba who got lost in a crowd and never returned. Gaurav highlights the gross negligence by the police and the Railway Police Force in the case. After a year, as the case gets colder, the family still has not given up hope. “It's a story that, I think, social media can eventually solve. My faith in this particular case lies in the power of social media because we've seen what it can do from the Baba Ka Dhaba case” he says. This and a lot more as they talk about what made news, what didn't, and what shouldn't have. If you can’t go to the highway, Rocky, Mayur, Prashant, and Abhinandan — the team behind shows like Highway On My Plate, Vital Stats of India, Jai Hind, and Rocky and Mayur's Food Xpress — will bring the highway to you!So, here goes the newest offering from Newslaundry: Highway On My Podcast. The creators of the much loved TV travel show revisit their travels across India, sharing stories, anecdotes, trivia, and — for when the roads are open and inviting again — recommendations on food, culture, people, and much more. In this episode of Highway On My Podcast, Rocky, Mayur, Abhinandan and Prashant traverse the coastal state of Maharashtra. Doing justice to its highly varied food culture, the gang eats everything with equal enthusiasm, from Bhel to exotic bird preparations. The journey begins on a heartbreaking note in the breezy hill town of Mahabaleshwar, where the team’s dreams were shattered once they were welcomed by the caretaker of Hotel Regency. As it turned out, the hotel was so dirty that Rocky decided to sleep in the clothes he’d been wearing all day since he was sure they were much cleaner than the bedsheets. Shedding the memories of their horrific overnight stay, they hit the road to try out some roasted lentils, a speciality of Mahabaleshwar. They also try delicious jams after feasting on Chana . Driving to the plains, the gang discusses, while in transit, whether monsoons are a good time to visit Mahabaleshwar. Mayur doesn’t think so but Abhinandan strongly recommends it, only for the beautiful waterfalls. In Pune, they head to Kayani Bakery, a landmark in the city, that’s known for its scrumptious Shrewsbury biscuits. Prashant says the visit to Kayani is one of his more delightful experiences from their travels. They also talk about Pune’s authentic Maharashtrian food, their visit to Dorabji’s, and a place with an interesting menu. Heading to Nagpur, the team visits Saoji restaurant, which Abhinandan thinks should have a national presence. Rocky advises listeners to beware of the kind of spice that goes into the food, saying Saoji’s chefs typically add half a kg of chillies for a preparation with one kg of meat. Moving from spicy black meat to delicious orange-based sweets, Rocky highly recommends the orange Soan Papdi and the orange Barfi when in Nagpur. Falling short of time, the gang rushes out of Nagpur for Mumbai, discussing their memorable encounter with Mr Kohinoor, the owner of much-renowned Britannia & Co., an old Irani Cafe that is a part of city folklore. Listeners are also introduced to Mr Tony of Tony Da Dhaba, and how his salesmanship talked them into some exoic food. They feast on delicious seafood at Gajalee while Mayur tries Khichdi at Soam. The team also discusses the history behind Colaba’s iconic Cafe Mondegar and Cafe Leopold.Speeding off to Kolhapur, the gang shops for chappals and then samples Rajabhau’s Bhel, a local favourite and an example of how India’s street food never ceases to surprise. Prashant talks about Maharashtra’s good and bad vineyards and how locals developed a taste for wine. The group also talks about trying Mastani in Pune, the variety of Paan in Nagpur, and Mario Miranda’s art at Mondegar. All this and more, only on Highway On My Podcast. If you want to make a fortune in food, forget about reading the future in coffee grounds and follow the big trends in the food service or the HoReCa (Hotels, Restaurants and Café) sector. This sector is traditionally the make or break point for any food innovation and it is often the first point of contact for exciting new products. We don’t just mean cloud eggs, cronuts or Instagram friendly rainbow coloured food but also foods that are tech-forward flavor bombs like plant-based food and in the near future, cultivated meat. In the US, iconic chefs like David Chang (of Momofuku fame) have heralded the charge of products from companies like Impossible Foods in their restaurants. In a matter of a couple of years, these products went from being exclusively served in upscale restaurants to becoming ubiquitous in fast food chains. In India, will we see a similar trickle down effect from restaurants to our grocery stores and finally our homes? We pose this and many other questions about the food service world to Gauri Devidayal, the co-founder of exemplary Mumbai restaurants like The Table, Miss T and the industrial kitchen, Magazine Street Kitchen. SHOW NOTES: Food Matters India: Gauri Devidayal is the co-founder of the iconic Mumbai restaurants like the The Table and Miss T and the industrial kitchen, Magazine St Kitchen, under the umbrella of her company Food Matters India.
