About the spokesperson: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pushkar-limaye-23852455/ Pushkar Limaye is the founder and CTO of Carnot, a full-stack AgriTech platform. He grew up in Mumbai and studied at IIT Bombay, where he gained confidence and leadership skills. Pushkar's interest in engineering was sparked by his involvement in the IIT Bombay racing team, where he realized the importance of practical engineering and leadership. Carnot initially started as a car telematics startup but transitioned to AgriTech after receiving an investment from Mahindra and Mahindra in 2018. Their flagship product, Krishi's Market, is a GPS tracking device that provides transparency in the rental of tractors and helps differentiate between farmland and roads. Pushkar Limaye was raised in a typical Maharashtrian environment in Mumbai and attended a Marathi medium school until his 10th standard. He comes from a family of chartered accountants but decided to pursue engineering and got into IIT Bombay. Joining the IIT Bombay racing team and participating in formula student competitions had a significant impact on Pushkar's life, boosting his confidence and shaping his interest in engineering and leadership. The experience of leading a 60-person team in the racing team made Pushkar realize his enjoyment and aptitude for leadership roles. Inspired by the gap he observed between the engineering standards of his team's car and the best global counterparts, Pushkar aimed to build world-class products in India. A serendipitous incident involving audio signals from a car's electrical system led to the development of analytics for vehicles without built-in sensors. Qualcomm's grant through the Qualcomm Design in India Challenge provided a lifeline for Carnot during a challenging period, enabling them to explore partnerships and investment opportunities. Carnot chose to collaborate with Mahindra due to their belief in telematics as the future of the industry and the potential for distribution within Mahindra's vast ecosystem. Carnot's flagship product, Krishi's Market, is a GPS tracking device that brings transparency to the rental of tractors and helps differentiate between farmland and roads. They have achieved significant scale, with thousands of units deployed in India and Africa.

EPISODE 18 : PART 1 (OF 2) WITH AD DIRECTOR RAVI GUNDYA DESHPANDE AS WE CONVERSE ABOUT SHARING BOOKS WITH SMITA PATIL, AN INFERIORITY COMPLEX & A REBELLION AGAINST PATRIARCHY WITHIN HIS OWN FAMILY He comes from a family of landlords who were given Jaagirs by the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He has spent his childhood on the laps of greats like Kumar Gandharva, who used to hold private mehfils in his house. His father, a renowned writer himself, tried to push him towards cinema, while the rebel in him wished for a career in design. In the first part of my conversation with Advertising and film director Ravi Deshpande, we conversed about a Maharashtrian boy's childhood in Telugu land, a warm bond over books with the late Smita Patil, an inferiority complex because of his father's sterling success as a writer and his own gentle attempts at dismantling patriarchy within his own family. Please welcome Ravi Deshpande, a man who can make films, as effectively, as he can stitch a blouse. Hi, I am Atul Taishete and welcome to my podcast ‘Conversations with Atul'.
The world of Indian food became poorer on the 21st of July 2022 with the passing away of Pia Promina Dasgupta Barve in Mumbai. There was a spontaneous outpouring of grief from the many lives she had touched. To know about the multifaceted life she led, do read this article by food researcher Pritha Sen...https://tinyurl.com/4eeevr7t Many call Pia the pioneer home chef. She was baking from a time when most of us were not even born. She was behind the setting up of the iconic Kewpie restaurant in Kolkata. She moved to Mumbai where she was a lone woman working in the meat industry and she had also worked closely with the agricultural produce sector. Her culinary skills spanned not only her native Bengali cuisine, but that of the Maharashtrian side of her husband, whom she called Brave (from Barve), the colonial cuisine of the British Raj, anglo Indian, Jewish, Iranian (she had fed me tahdig once when she read that I had fond memories of it), Asian and what not; but what was most special to me were the eclairs she would make for my wife, Kainaz, because they made K smile like few other treats would. It is one of my regrets that I was not in touch with her in her last few months. I was going through my own health issues but to be honest, it was nothing that was big enough to stop me from making a phone call or from sending a text. My little way of making up to her was to reach out to some of the many whose lives she had touched and invite them to speak about her in my podcast. As I listened to Reshmy Kurian, Tara Deshpande, Manzilat Fatima and Mashushree Basu Roy & Anindya S Basu @Cook with Pikturenama share their memories of Pia, I realised that not interviewing her while I could for the #foodocracyforher is something I will always regret. Which is why, as I typed this, I decided that #foodocracyforher should have a Hall of Fame and that I would like to most humbly declare Pia Promina Dasgputa Barve its first star. If you haven't seen the series on Netflix yet (2 seasons), do so right now! It's a fun competition where families compete with each other to cook some really delicious food. Her participation helped helped her with getting a job since the show showed leadership, fast thinking and problem solving skills. It was cool to know that it was so much more than a cooking competition! Her three ideal dinner guests: Oprah, Paulo Coelho (author "The Alchemist") and Shah Rukh Khan (the Bollywood superstar) And she would cook a typical Maharashtrian meal for them. Listen for more fun questions! :) I am so thankful to her for agreeing to this interview. I learned so much and even snagged an invitation to her house when I visit London! :) And listen to the episode for the answer to the last riddle and a brand new riddle. Part of the International conference on Maharashtra in September 2021 - Jessica Chandras, Wake Forest University, USA By examining the contemporary multiscriptual and multilingual landscape of the city of Pune, Maharashtra, this paper explores the ways language ideologies circulate about Marathi, English, Urdu, and Hindi to illuminate a linguistic infrastructure of the city. Pune is an apt city to explore circulating multilingual ideologies as the city maintains an identity as a stronghold of Maharashtrian history and culture but has also undergone rapid demographic and social change since liberalization in the 1990s, tied to an expansion of the IT industry and as a hub for education. I explore language ideologies, as beliefs about languages and their speakers that motivate behavior, to argue that language is one way that Pune residents organize socio-spatial knowledge of the city and navigate belonging (Schieffelin et al, 1998). Through qualitative ethnographic research from 2016 to 2018, including asking individuals with insider knowledge of a place to draw a cognitive map of Pune to create an intimate view of locations based on layering subjective experiences (Graham 1976), this linguistic anthropological study extends a discussion of the power of both written and spoken language in Pune to socially construct understandings of identity and belonging (Jaffe & De Koning 2015, Lynch 1960). Data includes seven cognitive maps of the city's socio-spatial linguistic boundaries along with images of signage in three distinct Pune neighborhoods to analyze interlocutor's making sense of contemporary urban Indian multilingual and multiscriptual space as a cultural category (Duranti & Goodwin 1992, Feld & Basso 1996). Findings indicate the use and broadly circulating knowledge of different languages and scripts in the city coincide with many socio-political identifying features and social stratification through caste categories, socioeconomic statuses, and religious/ethnic backgrounds. Understanding a city's infrastructure and spatial organization through language guides Pune residents' experiences of the city and their roles within it.
Part of the International conference on Maharashtra in September 2021 - Madhuri Deshmukh, Oakton Community College, Des Plaines, USA Whereas “the oral forms of the pavāḍā, lāvanī and kīrtan have typically been sung by travelling specialists,”as the conference Concept Note puts it, the grind-mill songs were composed and sung by women in their homes. Accordingly, the grind-mill song tradition is likely to evoke images of a static, timeless and unchanging “folk culture.” In fact, however, the songs of the grind mill—as a genre— record a dislocation particular to the experience of women: their movement from the natal to the conjugal home, from one village and family to another. This movement of women through marriage might be one way in which the songs of the grind mill traveled, as they seem to have, from one village and region to another. This paper will argue that the verse tradition inspired by the labor of the grind-mill traveled well beyond the confines of the domestic space and circulated widely across the genres of Maharashtrian culture, most notably, poetry. Women's movement from māher to sāsar— represented in poignant songs about the vanvās of Sītā and the homelessness of Janābāī— encapsulates the experience of exile that seems to undergird the widely expressed desire in bhakti poetry for a māher in Pandharpur. Indeed, the journey to māher is the central metaphor for the annual vārī or pilgrimage to Pandharpur, evidence of the influence of the grind-mill songs in crafting the geography of the bhakti imagination. By drawing on the comparative examples of the African-American tradition and European poetry, this paper will delve into the history of the ovī, the dominant poetic form in Marathi literature until the eighteenth century, and the abhaṅga, the dominant form of bhakti poetry, to uncover the circulatory routes between women's oral compositions—their songs—and the development of written poetry in Maharashtra.
Pu La's vivid sketch of Narayan from his 1966 book Vyakti aani Valli paints a picture of sights, sounds and smells while revealing a man who gives of himself without taking anything in return, at that most important of times in our adult lives: the wedding. All our weddings had a Narayan. Or many Narayans - none of their thankless efforts captured in our wedding photo albums and dhaakchik videos. Fortunately, in Narayan, Pu La has done exactly that for us. In this very first episode of the Vaadach Nahi podcast, Vineet, Bhupal and Dhruv dissect the Maharashtrian wedding preparation process through the lens of Narayan, admire Pu La's skill at combining the light and the deep, and reflect on their own experiences growing up (and getting married) in Pune in the 90s and 2000s.

About Speaker: Yogendra Bangar is the founder of Aajibaichi Shala, India's first school for grandmothers. The school focuses to provide quality education to our Indian Grannies. The school was founded in 2016 on International Women's Day in Fangane village in Maharashtra. Bangar is an activist and the zila parishad teacher of the Motiram Dalal Charitable Trust. The school had a simple name, it was set up by a simple man, and the idea was also simple. However, the simplest of ideas are somehow always the most life changing. This was a school set up solely for elderly women of Fangane, who wished to be able to pick up pencils as their children and grandchildren did and sign their names. Today, they wear bright pink saree-uniforms and head to school together to learn their rhymes, math, alphabet, and art — and like any other students, complain about homework and tests. They are living a life they never had access to. Pretty in pink, sprightly of step and wide toothy and toothless smiles are what their Sundays are about now. Aajibaichi Shala is a Maharashtrian grandmother's lesson to all of India, and it's one of India's proudest stories. #INSPIRE #WhySchoolsMatter? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/future-school-leaders/message

Has the coronavirus pandemic disrupted your plan to take that long trip? Is the ongoing lockdown making you crave going off-road? Fret not. If you can’t go to the highway, Rocky, Mayur, Prashant, and Abhinandan — the team behind shows like Highway On My Plate, Vital Stats of India, Jai Hind, and Rocky and Mayur's Food Xpress — will bring the highway to you!So, here goes the newest offering from Newslaundry: Highway On My Podcast. The creators of the much loved TV travel show revisit their travels across India, sharing stories, anecdotes, trivia, and — for when the roads are open and inviting again — recommendations on food, culture, people, and much more. In this episode of Highway On My Podcast, Rocky, Mayur, Abhinandan and Prashant traverse the coastal state of Maharashtra. Doing justice to its highly varied food culture, the gang eats everything with equal enthusiasm, from Bhel to exotic bird preparations. The journey begins on a heartbreaking note in the breezy hill town of Mahabaleshwar, where the team’s dreams were shattered once they were welcomed by the caretaker of Hotel Regency. As it turned out, the hotel was so dirty that Rocky decided to sleep in the clothes he’d been wearing all day since he was sure they were much cleaner than the bedsheets. Shedding the memories of their horrific overnight stay, they hit the road to try out some roasted lentils, a speciality of Mahabaleshwar. They also try delicious jams after feasting on Chana . Driving to the plains, the gang discusses, while in transit, whether monsoons are a good time to visit Mahabaleshwar. Mayur doesn’t think so but Abhinandan strongly recommends it, only for the beautiful waterfalls. In Pune, they head to Kayani Bakery, a landmark in the city, that’s known for its scrumptious Shrewsbury biscuits. Prashant says the visit to Kayani is one of his more delightful experiences from their travels. They also talk about Pune’s authentic Maharashtrian food, their visit to Dorabji’s, and a place with an interesting menu. Heading to Nagpur, the team visits Saoji restaurant, which Abhinandan thinks should have a national presence. Rocky advises listeners to beware of the kind of spice that goes into the food, saying Saoji’s chefs typically add half a kg of chillies for a preparation with one kg of meat. Moving from spicy black meat to delicious orange-based sweets, Rocky highly recommends the orange Soan Papdi and the orange Barfi when in Nagpur. Falling short of time, the gang rushes out of Nagpur for Mumbai, discussing their memorable encounter with Mr Kohinoor, the owner of much-renowned Britannia & Co., an old Irani Cafe that is a part of city folklore. Listeners are also introduced to Mr Tony of Tony Da Dhaba, and how his salesmanship talked them into some exoic food. They feast on delicious seafood at Gajalee while Mayur tries Khichdi at Soam. The team also discusses the history behind Colaba’s iconic Cafe Mondegar and Cafe Leopold.Speeding off to Kolhapur, the gang shops for chappals and then samples Rajabhau’s Bhel, a local favourite and an example of how India’s street food never ceases to surprise. Prashant talks about Maharashtra’s good and bad vineyards and how locals developed a taste for wine. The group also talks about trying Mastani in Pune, the variety of Paan in Nagpur, and Mario Miranda’s art at Mondegar. All this and more, only on Highway On My Podcast. I’ve started a series called #FoodocracyIndia which is aimed at giving a shoutout to eateries across India that we love. I use Instagram lives to make it an audio video podcast and have now figured out using google how to convert into an audio podcast. This is the first that I did. It’s on Prakash, a heritage Maharashtrian eatery in Dadar, Mumbai. The series is about food memories and personal narratives and I hope you join me on the ride. Please bear with me at the parts where I am referring to pictures I was showing from my blog which you can’t see of course. It’s self recorded in my studio with no editing barring the music track.

The International Women’s Day – celebrated worldwide every year on March 8th has come a long way over the century – from women demanding the right to vote to women currently excelling in every field, shattering glass ceilings, leading some of the largest conglomerates to being the epitome of balancing and managing it all – home, career, personal interests. But how do they really do it? How far do we still need to go? Is it even possible to have an added dimension personally and excel at it? We think we got some marvellous insights through our conversations we had with some stellar women CXOs. So, here’s a compilation of three feisty women, one who has run the distance of the earth and may soon be on her way to run it twice over – and she has headed some of the largest fintech organisations. Another went on from being a preschool teacher to being regarded as among the foremost K12 leaders in India and drew much strength from meditation through this rollercoaster journey and yet another, a distinguished Marketing veteran who went on to become a Masterchef Singapore finalist, starting an Indian supper club based on Maharashtrian-Bengali cuisine with her CXO husband. Seeing pink already? Well it’s about time, we say – the Sky Is Pink – Well it very well could be. Watch out! We bring to you the remarkable example of Vaishali Kasture, who is part of the Amazon Web Services India Core Leadership Team. She was also the India Country Head at Experian and has headed stellar organisations such as L&T Financial Services, Goldman Sachs, Deloitte India, Infosys BPO, Citibank etc. Vaishali, also a mother and a canine-lover, spoke with us on balancing a high-pressure career and personal commitments apart from following a passion ardently – Vaishali is the first Indian woman to have run all the world major marathons and to think she took to running in her thirties! We bring to you excerpts of our conversation wherein she shares how running above all else, helped her get more honest with herself and gain clarity of what she wants out of life. We also spoke of the challenges women continue to face in a largely patriarchal society and corporate culture, and how it is indeed possible for a woman to taste success on her terms, and append an additional dimension - a dimension only for her to cherish. Priya Barve, Head of BrandLab, APAC at Google, wears many hats. One such is of a Masterchef! This creative marketing executive also runs a supper club in Singapore, The Bombay Howrah Dining Car, celebrating Maharashtrian and Bengali cuisine. She along with her equally prolific husband, Aniruddha Ganguly, CEO and Co-Founder at Negobot, have hosted several guests. In my conversation with them, Priya spoke about how she began cooking, her takeaways from participating in Masterchef. Humour is a constant companion throughout this conversation. We also elicit amusing reactions of her colleagues when they came to know of her aspirations. Priya shares how she has sought learning, challenges and growth rather than designations to guide her when she chose the organisations she worked with and how success to her is an accumulation of experiences and she hopes to continue to do so. Lina Ashar, Founder of Kangaroo Kids Preschool and Billabong High International School shared some enriching insights into understanding the human mind, what it means of being in the business of tapping a being’s utmost potential. Her journey from being a preschool teacher, starting with a single preschool in Bandra West to an acknowledged K12 chain, arguably the foremost to bring forth the concept of ‘learning is fun’ , is inspiring. In my conversation Lina speaks how meditation provided her the right compass to give her a sense of reality – one which enables one to tell stories correctly, in a more peaceful manner, approaching it through love rather than fear. She speaks about how the power of meaning and purpose is well within the reach of everyone and the futility of depending on external validators as a measure of success or happiness. Happy Listening!

We get to hang with the great vocalist Ganavya and we get to hear some selections from her highly anticipated debut album. Ganavya comes to NYC this Wednesday to the Rubin Museum of Art for the her album relase concert. Vocalist and composer Ganavya Doraiswamy has carved a niche for herself at the nexus of South Indian vocal styles and jazz/contemporary music. She has been featured on various projects, most notably Alfredo Rodriguez’s Tocororo (co-produced by Quincy Jones), which hit #1 on jazz charts. Ganavya’s own debut album, Aikyam: Onnu, is set to release in March 2017. It features jazz standards translated into her native language of Tamil as well as recontextualized abhang-s (spiritual poetry written by 13th- to 15th-century Maharashtrian saints). Aikyam –a term used in Sanskrit and Tamil, to denote ‘sameness,’ is suggestive of a harmonious union, and represents a conscious merging of her different worlds.
