This Day in Legal History: Paris Peace AccordsOn January 27, 1973, the Paris Peace Accords were signed, formally ending direct U.S. military involvement in the Vietnam War. The agreement, brokered after years of intense negotiations, was signed by representatives from the United States, North Vietnam, South Vietnam, and the Provisional Revolutionary Government of South Vietnam. The key provisions included a ceasefire, the withdrawal of U.S. troops, the release of prisoners of war, and a commitment to peaceful reunification efforts. Dr. Henry Kissinger, serving as the U.S. National Security Advisor, played a pivotal role in negotiating the agreement, earning him the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize, which he controversially shared with North Vietnamese negotiator Lê Đức Thọ, who declined the award. The accords marked a significant moment in Cold War diplomacy, as they sought to halt one of the most controversial conflicts in U.S. history. Despite the agreement, tensions remained high, and fighting between North and South Vietnam continued. Ultimately, the accords failed to establish lasting peace, as North Vietnamese forces launched a successful campaign to reunify Vietnam under communist control in 1975.The accords also addressed humanitarian concerns, including provisions for the return of U.S. prisoners of war, such as those held at the infamous "Hanoi Hilton." The agreements emphasized self-determination for the South Vietnamese people, though political realities on the ground made this challenging. The signing of the Paris Peace Accords underscored the limits of U.S. influence in Vietnam and symbolized a broader shift in American foreign policy, as the nation grappled with the aftermath of its longest war to date.Elon Musk has asked a federal judge in Texas to dismiss a class-action lawsuit accusing him and his political action committee, America PAC, of running an illegal lottery. The lawsuit, filed by Arizona resident Jacqueline McAferty, alleges that Musk misled voters in seven battleground states into signing a petition supporting the U.S. Constitution by offering a chance to win $1 million. McAferty argues that this violated Texas deceptive trade practices laws, as winners were supposedly chosen at random.Musk, however, contends that participants were informed they would be evaluated for opportunities to become America PAC spokespeople, not awarded a random prize. He emphasized that this process did not involve "chance" and thus was not a lottery. Musk also rejected claims that collecting petition signers' personal information caused harm, noting there was no evidence of misuse. The lawsuit, filed on Election Day in 2024, seeks at least $5 million in damages for petition signers. It follows a related legal effort in Philadelphia, where a judge declined to halt Musk's giveaway, ruling it was not an illegal lottery. Musk is a Texas resident, and Tesla, his electric car company, is headquartered in Austin.Elon Musk says $1 million election giveaway wasn't an illegal lottery | ReutersIndian digital news outlets, including those owned by billionaires Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani, have joined a copyright lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging unauthorized use of their content to train its AI models. News organizations such as NDTV, Network18, Indian Express, and Hindustan Times argue that OpenAI's "willful scraping" of their material threatens their copyrights and undermines their advertising revenue. This legal filing builds on a prior lawsuit initiated by ANI, India's most prominent news agency, marking a significant escalation in the legal battle. The media outlets accuse OpenAI of prioritizing partnerships with international publishers while neglecting similar agreements with Indian companies, resulting in unfair advantages. OpenAI, however, maintains that its use of publicly available data adheres to fair use principles and asserts that Indian courts lack jurisdiction over its U.S.-based servers. This legal challenge occurs as India's generative AI market is poised for rapid growth, and OpenAI views the country as a key market with a large user base. Critics of OpenAI's practices argue its actions undermine press freedom and could weaken democracy in India. Meanwhile, OpenAI continues to defend its business model, citing partnerships with major global publishers and emphasizing its compliance with copyright laws in other regions.OpenAI to face Indian news firms of Ambani, Adani in copyright battle, documents show | ReutersA wave of new state laws targeting "forever chemicals" (PFAS) in cosmetics took effect this year, reflecting growing concerns over the health and environmental risks of these persistent substances. California, Colorado, and several other states have banned the intentional use of PFAS in products like lipstick and mascara, while broader measures in states such as Minnesota also cover textiles, cookware, and food packaging. PFAS, often used for properties like water resistance or shine, can accumulate in the environment and pose health risks such as cancer, low birth weight, and fertility issues, according to the EPA.Businesses are responding by assessing their supply chains, reformulating products, and removing items from shelves to comply with the patchwork of state laws, which vary in scope. Some companies may adopt nationwide standards based on these bans, while others will adjust their product offerings by jurisdiction. Legal experts warn of additional challenges, including lawsuits over "greenwashing" if products marketed as sustainable or eco-friendly are found to contain PFAS, even unintentionally.Consumer lawsuits have already targeted items like waterproof mascara, disposable tableware, and smartwatch bands for PFAS content, citing false advertising. Meanwhile, some state laws, like those in Maine, acknowledge that PFAS are unavoidable in certain industries, requiring disclosure instead of outright bans. These measures are expected to spur further regulation of chemicals in cosmetics and beyond, particularly at the state level, as consumer demand for "clean beauty" and environmentally friendly products continues to grow.'Forever Chemicals' Reckoning Hits Cosmetics With New State LawsCadwalader, Wickersham & Taft reported a record $638 million in revenue in 2024, a 15% increase driven by its work with Wall Street banks and private credit markets. The firm's strategy combines advising traditional banking clients and expanding its services to private capital providers as both sectors increasingly collaborate. Notable deals include representing BNP Paribas in a $5 billion financing partnership with Apollo-backed ATLAS SP Partners and helping arrange a European middle-market private credit collateralized loan obligation. The firm's 80 equity partners earned an average of $3.7 million each last year, a 33% increase. Managing Partner Pat Quinn emphasized that Cadwalader's smaller size, with about 430 lawyers and offices in only five cities, fosters close collaboration and a personal touch with clients. Lawyers also benefit from flexible office policies, with partners required to be in four days a week and associates encouraged to attend voluntarily on Mondays.Cadwalader's capital markets, fund finance, and real estate practices performed strongly, while its investigations group expanded into broader corporate conduct matters. The London office also posted record revenue, bolstered by leveraged finance and fund finance work. With rising demand and increasingly complex transactions, Quinn anticipates that 2025 could surpass last year's success.Cadwalader Revenue Jumps 15% as Banks, Private Credit Align This is a public episode. The world's largest democracy is going to the polls this year. As much as a logistical challenge it will be given the sheer size, it will also be a test for the Indian media. Will the media be fair? Will it be able to remain neutral amidst the audio-visual assault? What about fake news and misinformation? What about ideological balance? All of these questions and more, in a discussion between Sachin Kalbag and his guest Pradyuman Maheshwari. In recent times, concerns have arisen about the practices of certain segments of Indian media, revealing a pattern of subtle news suppression that has raised eyebrows among both citizens and watchdog organizations. While media is traditionally seen as a pillar of democracy, these concerns suggest a departure from its intended role. Critics argue that a combination of editorial bias, corporate influence, and political pressure has led to the selective coverage of news stories. By strategically underplaying or altogether ignoring certain stories, Indian media outlets may be inadvertently shaping public opinion and limiting citizens' access to a well-rounded understanding of critical events. As media's influence remains profound, an open discourse about news transparency and accountability has become increasingly vital in maintaining a healthy democratic society. The implications of this alleged silent news suppression are far-reaching. With the rise of digital platforms, the speed at which information spreads has increased exponentially, making the role of media in shaping public perception more crucial than ever. By systematically sidelining certain stories, media outlets might be compromising their responsibility to inform the public objectively. As citizens become more cognizant of these dynamics, demands for greater media integrity, unbiased reporting, and ethical journalism are echoing across the nation, calling for a reevaluation of media practices and a renewed commitment to upholding the principles of a free and transparent press.

Begum Zeenat Mahal was the last standing queen of the famous Indian Mughal Empire, her reign being from November 1840 to September 1857. The queen consort of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor, very little is known about Zeenat's early life other than the fact that she was married off at the age of 18 years… while the emperor was 64 years old at the time. When her husband's reign was cut short by the angry British army and East India Company, Zeenat was not really the focus of the whole revolt. In fact, when the barracks revolt of 1857 happened in north India, Zeenat ran way from Delhi city to make sure her son Mirza Jawan Bakht was protected. Yet, she thrived in the sidelines, through calculative and methodical puppeteering of political influence and palace intrigue. Because what Zeenat wanted more than anything in the world was to keep the Mughal empire up and running. And for her son to remain on the throne of Hindustan. Even if it meant poisoning one (or two, or three) high-ranking English officers along the way. Jacqueline Fernandez is best known as a Bollywood actress and model of Sri Lankan descent, who very recently has been accused of receiving funds from a conman and allegedly being involved in money laundering. Jacqueline has been accused by the Enforcement Directorate of India of both financial impropriety and destruction of evidence. But did she also commit the unforgivable crime of falling in love? As a FirstPost article from July 2022 says about Jacqueline and alleged lover Sukesh Chandrashekar -- "Love knows no bar". Between December 2021 to today, Jacqueline has been called in a bunch of times for questioning by the Enforcement Directorate over her involvement in potential money laundering by Sukesh. She was questioned over whether she was given gifts or other items by the conman in question, likely totally about tens of crores of Indian rupees. She has been prevented from travelling out of India, which has impeded her professional and personal life, leading to a PR nightmare and her being removed from high-budget movie projects. She was charged officially for working with Sukesh to convert his black money holdings into legitimate assets. Oh and of course, since she is a woman, her character has been called into question through sheer gossip and rumours, most of which remain unconnected to the story at hand. Jacqueline was already a very famous face. But this case took her to a whole other level of infamy. A recent controversy involving the online news site the Wire and the tech giant Meta has sparked a new debate on the media in India. The recent controversy has been something of a Rorschach test with some critics castigating digital media for playing fast and loose with the truth and others defending the media from further intrusion by the state. The debate is far from academic as its consequences have implications for freedom of expression, government regulation, and democratic accountability. To discuss the state of the Indian media in the year 2022, Milan is joined on the show this week by the journalist Manisha Pande. Manisha is the executive editor of Newslaundry, a well-regarded digital news site that is dedicated to covering the media ecosystem in India today. She is the host and producer of the Newslaundry show, TV Newsance, which offers a satirical look at television news in India. In addition to discussing the media controversy involving the Wire, Milan and Manisha discuss the business-media nexus, shrinking space for anti-government criticism, and the dangers of self-censorship. Plus, the duo discuss why the sorry state of prime-time news television refuses to change. “Mehrauli Murder Case and 'sansani' reporting,” TV Newsance 193, November 19, 2022.Manisha Pande, “Why we report on the media,” Newslaundry, June 25, 2022.Manisha Pande, “‘It's not a newsroom, it's a durbar': Inside the Republic of Arnab Goswami,” Newslaundry, September 7, 2020.

In the fourth episode of #ScrollIdeas, we take a deep dive into the dysfunctional state of Indian media with Ruben Banerjee, former editor-in-chief of the Outlook Group. Everyone seems to agree the Indian media is broken. TV news is now theatre. Print media rarely holds the government to account. And while everyone complains about it, subscribers seem reluctant to pay up for good journalism, incentivising media houses to curry favour with powerful politicians and industrialists. In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler reconnects with Archana Jain, an accomplished PR and communications professional, and the founder of PR Pundit, one of India's top integrated communications firms. Archana has been at the forefront of her industry since her early days in the field and is widely recognised as a leading personality in PR, communication and media. She has been acknowledged as India's top 100 PR communications professionals, as well as among India's 50 Most Influential Women in Indian Media, Marketing & Advertising (2019, 2020 & 2021) and featured in the “Top 100 Influential Game Changers List.”Anne and Archana collaborated a few years ago, and got to know each other, back when Anne was heading global communications for French shoe designer Christian Louboutin. Over the course of this conversation, Archana tells the story of her beginnings in PR, how she went from consulting into working towards consumer-focused communication, to building her company and creating meaningful programs for the right audiences. She talks to Anne about why public relations still matters today, how it's imperative for brands to be telling authentic stories and why PR is a long game - not a quick win, and current challenges given that it's not an age-old profession. They also discuss changes in the media landscape and the rise of purpose-driven communications and community advocacy, in the age of social media. Archana also offers her thoughts on what it's been like to be a woman at the head of her own business, how the landscape changed in the past twenty years, but also how she chose to integrate flexibility and WFH capabilities for her team since 2004 - and how satisfying it's been for her to be able to help women balance their personal and professional commitments. You'll probably notice a loud peacock (or two) in the background, as some were roaming behind Archana's home office during the interview. On Cock and Bull, Cyrus spends the initial moments of today's episodes talking to an empty chair in wait of Abbas (brings back memories). Also joining Abbas are Punit Pania and, of course, Silverie (Antariksh). On this episode, we answer pertinent pressing questions like - Can Cyrus ride a bike? Why does Powai not have any beggars? Is Silverie starting his own bike business now? They also talk about whether female comics hate comedy producers, why there are very few women comedians in the industry, and more. Also discussed is whether geography is an altogether different subject in Russia, Abbas and Antariksh getting help from their professors during exams, Punit going to an RSS school, and lots more. Further, they try to go into some planned topics about how Indian TV news outlets are twisting the matter with religious or anti-govt undertones against the Indian students being stuck in Ukraine with talking points like - why Ukraine is cheaper for medical studies compared to India, and why news channels in India are bringing the age old story of Anti-CAA protests and them coming to India. A large section of Indian News Media was left frothing in the mouth when @Rahul Gandhi asked them to stop sucking up to the Govt and ask their own questions. Why did Rahul lose his cool and does Dalal even begin to describe what a large section of the Indian Media is doing??? On the DeshBhakt we think he got the world - it should have been a little more direct. Also - has the @Indian National Congress finally understood what the Godi Media is upto?

Disconnect between mass media and public opinion is bad news for democracy. It's worse than censorship.
Sumit is the Founding Editor of The Shudra Media and The News Beak. In the past Sumit has held various positions with ABP News, Zee News, India News and News Nation. It's a well known fact that there is close to nil representation of Dalits in Indian Media. In the recent by The Media Rumble in partnership with Oxfam India, it was revealed that out of 121 leadership positions surveyed in newsrooms, none are held by those belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Three out of every four anchors of flagship debates are upper caste. Not one is Dalit, Adivasi, or OBC. Only 10 of the 972 articles featured on the cover pages of the 12 magazines are about issues related to caste. No more than 5 percent of all articles in English newspapers are written by Dalits and Adivasis. (Source: Newslaundry) In this podcast we talked about. 1. Sumit's experience of working with India media and the ways in which he has seen the casteism that operates in these Upper Caste Castles. 2. The reason behind low representation of Dalits and Bahujan voices. 3. Why even the Upper Caste media personalities who claim to be progressive have failed in creating diversity in their organisation. 4. Is the new digital media bringing new hope in the area of social justice. 5. The flawed concept of TRP. 6. Advice for upcoming Journalists. Support my work: 1. This week, host Nidhi Suresh is joined by Ayush Tiwari and Sidharth Singh of Newslaundry. In February 2021, the I&B ministry's Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity presented, in the parliament, data on the Narendra Modi government's ad spending. It shows that Republic TV and Times Now, the most watched English news TV channels in the country, got fewer ads than NewsX, India Today, and BTVI. This data doesn't match the numbers the government had previously released under the Right to Information Act, however, nor with those maintained by the channels themselves. Ayush discusses his report on this discrepancy.Nidhi asks Ayush why he thinks the Modi government is hesitant revealing its actual expenditure? Ayush has no answer to why but says, “The fact that they gave numbers that didn't reflect the actual expenditure raises several questions because, at the end of the day, this is money collected from taxpayers.” Ayush adds that the ministry is conveniently blaming news channels for whatever discrepancies there might be in how it is calculating spending.Sidharth talks about his report on gender representation in Indian newsrooms. Two years ago, Newslaundry published a report in partnership with UN Women, Gender Inequality in India Media, which found that women held barely five percent of newsroom leadership positions. According to preliminary findings from Gender Inequality in Indian Media 2021, the numbers have not really changed for 2019-20.Comparing the two reports, Sidharth says, “Unfortunately, we aren't really seeing great leaps and strides as far as gender representation is concerned.” Ayush weighs in by talking about gender representation in Newslaundry compared to other news major organisations. This and a lot more as they talk about what made news, what didn't, and what shouldn't have.Tune in. The media has given saturated coverage to the Pulwama terrorist attack. This is not unnatural because it was the deadliest single action against the security forces in almost three decades of Pakistani sponsored terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. But the way the media is running the terrorist action once again raises the question of how such grievous actions should be covered. Are there golden rules that should ideally be observed while reporting such events and in commentaries, including talk shows? And are these being observed in the constant flow of “Breaking News” on TV and updates in newspapers and digital news websites?
