Welcome back to the TEFLology Podcast! A podcast all about teaching English as foreign language and related matters.  Today we are pleased to bring you an interview with Prof. Jean-Marc Dewaele.  Jean-Marc is a professor in Applied Linguistics and Multilingualism at Birkbeck, University of London.  His various research interests include multilingualism, multiculturalism, as well as individual differences in foreign language acquisition and production.  His publications include the co-authored Raising multilingual children, written in 2017, 2013’s Emotions in multiple languages, and New Trends in Crosslinguistic Influence and Multilingualism Research, written with Gessica De Angelis.  Matthew got the chance to speak to Jean-Marc at the 3rd Psychology of Language Learning conference, held at Waseda University in Tokyo, in June of 2018. Matthew asked questions to Jean-Marc about topics related to multilingualism, such as raising multilingual children. She has published several books on General English Proficiency test preparation and is an experienced conference speaker.  Matthew spoke with Victoria at the 53rd RELC International Conference, that took place in Singapore earlier this Spring. Eric is Associate Professor of Learning Design and Technology at the University of Fukuchiyama in Kyoto, and coordinator of JALT’s Mixed, Augmented and Virtual Realities in Learning Special Interest Group, topics of which are discussed in this interview.  This interview was recorded at the JALT PanSIG conference, that took place in Tokyo earlier this month. The PanSIG conference celebrates the work of the many special interest groups that makes up the larger professional association.  The interview was part of the Teacher Development SIG’s forum I helped to organise titled “Exploring The Role That SIGs Play in Teacher Development: Three Interviews.”  We’d like to thank Eric for giving his permission to share this interview, and to the other participants and attendees of the forum. In this episode, we bring you an interview with Gary Barkhuizen.  Gary is Professor and current Head of School in the Faculty of Arts at The University of Auckland, New Zealand. Gary has co-authored books including Analysing Learning Language, and Second Language Identity in Narratives of Study Abroad, and edited books including Reflections on Language Teacher Identity Research; a title and topic that is a feature of the following interview. Gary’s research interests include Language teacher education, teacher identity, study abroad, and studies that use narrative inquiry and other qualitative methodologies. Rob and Matt recorded this interview in February at New York University’s School of Professional Studies in Tokyo, before Gary gave a presentation for JALT’s Tokyo Chapter. Unlike many larger academic conferences, ExcitELT is not sponsored or affiliated with any organisations, but is devised and carried out by a small group of volunteers, with most of the proceeds going to charitable courses.  The episodes features interviews with three of the featured speakers, former guests John Fanselow and Mike Griffin, and Atsuko Watanabe. Gabriel is Director of the LUDUS Center, the faculty professional development center of the Catholic University of Uruguay. Gabriel's research focuses on teacher education, pedagogy, and professional development, among other areas. His published books include 2004’s Teacher-Centered Professional Development, and 2012’s Teaching Language Teachers: Scaffolding Professional Learning. The interview was conducted at last year’s JALT conference, after Gabriel had just delivered his plenary presentation titled: Shaping the Way We Grow: Teachers and Development. In the interview, Matt asked Gabriel questions about Continuing Professional Development, Teacher Education, and the Teaching of Teachers.
