Happy New Year to all our listeners and viewers! We were immensely proud to see both Toby Young and our Chair, Professor Nigel Biggar, in the New Year honours list – an achievement that's in no small part thanks to the sustained support of all the members and supporters of the FSU over our nearly five years of operation. Tuesday 7thJanuary is the tenth anniversary of the ‘Charlie Hebdo' massacre in Paris during which 12 people were murdered. France 24 reported on the anniversary last week, “Since its founding in 1970, [Charlie Hebdo] has regularly tested the boundaries of French hate-speech laws, which offer protection to minorities but allow for blasphemy and the mockery of religion”. The article continues, “‘The idea is not to publish anything, it's to publish everything that makes people doubt, brings them to reflect, to ask questions, to not end up closed in by ideology', director Riss, who survived the 2015 attack, told Le Monde in November”. Jan was on GB News discussing the anniversary on Sunday and in today's discussion we think about how depictions of the Prophet Muhammed are frequently dismissed as ‘unwise' – a recent example being the response of Labour Party advisor Mike Buckley to the Batley Grammar school incident of 2021. To mark the new year, Toby Young has written a piece in Spiked listing the multiple free speech threats from Sir Keir Starmer's government. His list includes the looming Employment Rights Bill, the Football Governance Bill and Yvette Cooper's stated aim to lower the threshold for the recording of non-crime hate incidents (NCHIs). FSU statistics to the end of 2024 are hot off the press and they show how the FSU has grown from 12,275 at year-end 2023 to 24,279 at year-end 2024 – an increase of 97.8%. Meanwhile, on the case work side of the house, we have assisted approximately 3,300 individuals since our creation, 640 (or nearly a fifth) of whom reached out to us during the second half of 2024. Finally, we are delighted to have the opportunity to host a farewell event for Graham Linehan before he heads to the USA to work with Andrew Doyle on a new sitcom. Tickets are on sale at our events page from Tuesday 7th January.   ‘That's Debatable!'  is edited by Jason Clift.

Closing out the blessed month of Muharram, Parvez and Omar are back for a timely and important discussion about Muharram, the Day of Āshūrā, and the events of Karbala from a Shi'i perspective. This is a deep dive into Shi'i readings of early Muslim history and the centrality of the Ahl-al Bayt (The Household/Progeny of the Prophet Muhammedﷺ) and specifically how the events of Karbala and the venerative rites and traditions of Muharram inform Shi'i devotional life.     About Ahmad Rashid Salim  Ahmad Rashid Salim (احمد راشد سليم) is a doctoral candidate and instructor at the Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Berkeley, in the fields of Islamic studies and Persian literature. His areas of scholarship include classical Persian literature - particularly mystical poetry, translation, Sufism, Qur'an interpretation, language and power, Persian literature in Afghanistan, the Kabuli dialect, Shi'i - Sunni polemics, and religious thought in Afghanistan. His dissertation is titled: The Harmony of Hayrat: Words, Wonder, and Worlds in Persian Mystical Poetry and Poetics. Salim is also the founder of Aleff Institute, a premier online instruction program for the Persian language, with a special emphasis on the Kabuli dialect. He is the author of Islam Explained, a best-selling book utilized in a number of university courses throughout the United States. He earned a bachelor's degree in Political Science with a focus on Islamic studies, and was awarded a master's degree by the Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Berkeley.

One of our recurring bugbears is the imperious messaging that has seeped into all corners of British society, lecturing us on what to think and say as we go about our business. A current TV advertising campaign against ageism is a case in point. No-one wants people of different ages to be excluded from society, but it is rather galling to be slapped on the wrist for using harmless phrases like, “you can't teach an old dog new tricks”. It turns out that local authorities have also latched onto the re-education trend. As reported in The Telegraph, the FSU has been pushing back on councils that have started using PSPOs (Public Spaces Protection Orders) to police every aspect of our behaviour in public – including our speech. As Ben makes clear, we suspect this battle may prove to be a frustrating game of ‘whack-a-mole' for a while yet. We briefly mention a recent exposé of the FSU's numerous successes in Byline Times before moving on to examine the Cass Review Final Report, which was published last week. Dr Hilary Cass explicitly addresses the toxicity of the ongoing gender debate in her Foreword, “There are few other areas of healthcare where professionals are so afraid to openly discuss their views, where people are vilified on social media, and where name-calling echoes the worst bullying behaviour. This must stop”. The mainstream media has taken proper notice of the Cass review and we ponder how much hope we can reasonably now pin on a change in the direction and tone of the discussion. We end today's episode with a quick review of the findings from a poll commissioned by the Henry Jackson Society. Among a list of rather depressing statistics is the finding that 52% of the British Muslims polled want to make it illegal to show a picture of the Prophet Muhammed. ‘That's Debatable!' is edited by Jason Clift.

This came about through trust, abandonment of concern. The surah urges us to express goodness, be generous and make sacrifices through the generosity of spirit. And to those who are cut off from the light, they are the ones who truly have no continuity (and not those without progeny). 1. Surely We have given you Kauthar, 2. The early suras of the Qur'an are the short, hymnic passages associated with the first revelations to the Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him and his progeny). They reveal many of the central values of Islam: generosity, kindness, prayer, and good deeds – in other words, a vision of a just and meaningful life. They also often refer to nature - the moon, sun, and stars; the sky and sea; night and day – highlighting the inextricable link between people and the environment.   Michael Sells, a renowned expert on the Qur'an, joins us for this episode of Muslim Footprints to discuss what he describes as “some of the most powerful prophetic and revelatory passages in religious history.” Dr Sells is the John Barrows Professor of Islamic History and Literature at the University of Chicago. He has studied and taught in the areas of Qur'anic studies; Sufism; Arabic and Islamic love poetry; and mystical literature.

All of its glammers and glitz is just a distraction as Allah swt says in the quran, “The worldly life is nothing but an illusionary enjoyment (3:185).” We reflect upon sayings of the Prophet Muhammed sallalahu alayhi wa salam that strengthen our Iman whilst helping us focus and strive stronger towards the hereafter. We discuss practical tips that help us break our nafs and break our attachment to this dunya. We acknowledge that all of this is easier said than done and recognise the humanity of a believer that we are all weak and forgetful but always remember that our strength and success comes from Allah and Allah only so, call upon him as he is ready to respond to you.

Ben Caspit speaks this week with Lt. Col. (res.) Jonathan D. Halevi, who currently serves as senior Middle East researcher at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. Commenting on the unprecedented decision by the head of the Islamic Ra'am party Mansour Abbas last May to join the ruling coalition, Halevi says that from Abbas' perspective, this decision legitimizes Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. "Analyzing Abbas' statements over the last decade, one can see he is guided by two principles, pragmatism and Islamism," says Halevi. Abbas had said very clearly, even after joining the coalition, that he bases his political agenda on Islam. Inspired by Prophet Muhammed, Abbas, he argues, also strived to create an alliance with the Jews.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Principal Wadud Hasan explains the importance of our love for Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and how following the ways of the Prophet, allows us to love Allah SWT. In Surah Tawbah (The Repentance) 9:128 of the Quran, Allah says that He has sent a prophet that loves us so much, our suffering distresses him. Our prophet loves his believers so much that when we are not happy, he is not happy. Through prayer and thikr, we are able to love the prophet and feel his love in our hearts. If we want to see how much Allah SWT loves us, then we have to see how much we love the messenger of Allah. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ told his wife Aisha that he makes duaa and remembers his ummah five times a day, after every prayer. How can we not pray for our prophet ﷺ when he thinks of us so often and shows so much love for us?Last week, Ustadh Michael Wolfender discussed how the prophet ﷺ showed mercy for the people who tortured him because one day their children and future generations could be Muslims. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ cared about us so much that he showed mercy to our past generations. His mercy to the people of Mecca led Muhammed bin Qasem to conquer Sindh in South Asia which brought Islam to the South Asian subcontinent. His companions were able to conquer other areas of the world and spread Islam through that moment of mercy for the benefit of future generations of Muslims. Our prophet ﷺ loved us and cared about us so much that he showed that mercy. Here's a way to connect with our prophet ﷺ: close your eyes and imagine going to the masjid of the prophet in Madina and meeting him. How would you feel if you entered the masjid and you see Prophet Muhammad ﷺ there, welcoming you? Instead of resting, the prophet ﷺ has decided to respond to your salaam and welcome you because he would embrace even the worst of us. Now imagine how would it feel in the hereafter, when we are finally seeing our prophet, the one that loved us even more than our parents? It is important to remember that we will be in paradise with those who we love and by loving the prophet ﷺ through prayer, thikr, and following his ways, insh'Allah we will be reunited with our prophet ﷺ in the hereafter. We must always feel the love of Prophet Muhammed ﷺ in our hearts and that will bring us closer to Allah inshAllah.Support the show (http://www.goodtreeacademy.org/donate?id=pd)

We live in a world of projection. There is so much we can learn about ourselves and one another by listening very deeply to our own words, those of others and the emotions underlying them. If we look very closely, we will see that whatever we really admire in another is a reflection of what is admirable within us. Whatever we criticize in another is what we are critical of in our own selves. That is why it is so important to continuously look inwards and engage in battle with the lower qualities within our own selves that we wish to transform, to be true to our higher Self.  As the Prophet Muhammed once said: "the most excellent jihad is the conquest of one's self." Winning the war within is also the subject of "The Bhagavad Gita," the 9-night goddess festival of Navratri, and so many other epic spiritual conquests. Learn in this podcast how you can start tuning into your own criticisms to practice releasing judgments towards others and continuously work to transform your own negativities instead. Resources:Learn how you can Become a Spiritual Warrior, embody your soul power and realize your calling in life: www.theancientway.co/spiritualwarrior  Follow the True to Yourself Podcast on Instagram for updates about the latest episodes as they release each week: www.Instagram.com/truetoyourselfpodcast Learn how you can serve as an ambassador for authentic living by becoming a Wellness Ambassador of The Ancient Way: www.theancientway.co/wellness-ambassador Heal your body, soothe your emotions and realize your divine Self in a unique intergenerational, diverse family-like community: www.theancientway.co/community Connect with Ananta for ancient spiritual wisdom for modern living at:www.Instagram.com/ananta.onewww.Facebook.com/ananta.one Learn how to embody the healing power of Ayurveda in your daily life for better sleep, less stress, optimal digestion and more by ordering "The Ayurveda Way:" bit.ly/ayurvedaway By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Ananta Ripa Ajmera, or used by Ananta Ripa Ajmera with permission, and are protected under U.S. and international copyright and trademark laws. The Saadi Sultanate is the last dynasty in Morocco before the modern and current Alawite ruling family. Lasting roughly 150 years, this dynasty is best known for its trading prowess throughout Europe and Northern Africa and is architectural marvels. Its name “Saadi” stems from the Arabic word for happiness, unlike many other empire's whose name stems from a key ruler or geographic feature. They are also known as a Sharifian empire, or a community directly descended from the Prophet Muhammed, PBUH. The El Badi Palace in Marrakech which still stands today, is one of its best-known architectural marvels. Prophet Muhammed, peace be upon him, grew up as an orphan and Allah SWT took care of him and made sure he was taken care of. However, there were times when the prophet ﷺ faced hardships in the society he lived in, being perturbed by the prevalence of idol worship, inappropriate taking of life and ill treatment of orphans among other wrongs. So the prophet ﷺ would isolate himself in a cave to have time to think and that is when the Angel Jibril visited Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and revealed to him the Words of Allah SWT beginning with Surah Al-'Alaq (96 The Clot). The beginning of the Qur'an's revelation signified Allah choosing Prophet Muhammed ﷺ as His final messenger. With the frequency of revelation and visits from Angel Jibril, the prophet ﷺ came to enjoy the close companionship of Allah's angel. But then the visits from Angel Jibril stopped. About six months went by and the prophet ﷺ began to ask himself what he could have done to stop Angel Jibril from visiting him. His enemies in Mecca began to taunt him for being abandoned by the angel he spoke about. Then Angel Jibril returned, revealing Surah Ad-Duhaa (93 The Morning Hours).  This was like a bright light after darkness. For six months the prophet ﷺ had endured negative feelings and loss, but instantly found relief and light in the Words of Allah SWT. Ustadh Michael Wolfender shares how this resonates with us today. Sometimes we have feelings of abandonment, sadness or face depression but it's important to remember that Allah is always with us. Just as the prophet ﷺ saw the light at the end of the tunnel through Allah's Guidance, we all will find our light as well. Allah knew how His prophet was feeling when Angel Jibril revealed Surah Ad-Duhaa, just as Allah knows when we are in pain or facing hardships. Allah SWT told the prophet in Surah Ad-Duhaa that He has not forgotten him and that the hereafter is much better than this life. In verses 3 - 5, Allah says: “Your Lord ˹O Prophet˺ has not abandoned you, nor has He become hateful ˹of you˺. And the next life is certainly far better for you than this one. And ˹surely˺ your Lord will give so much to you that you will be pleased.” (93: 3 - 5)If you are always in the light then you will not appreciate the light. After darkness, we value the light which follows. Allah SWT will make us go through difficult times begetting negative emotions but when we turn to Allah and when things get better, we are so much happier. We thank Allah for letting us go through hard times and for guiding us towards the light, like he did with His prophet ﷺ as an example for us. Support the show (http://www.goodtreeacademy.org/donate?id=pd)
