Former 49ers director of player personnel and, most recently, general manager of the Tennessee Titans Ran Carthon sat down with "49ers Talk" co-host Jennifer Lee Chan to dissect the most pressing needs on San Francisco's offseason agenda. As a former front-office stalwart, Carthon takes us behind the scenes of the 49ers' braintrust and provides a unique perspective on how they evaluate talent and negotiate contracts, as well as their overall vision for roster construction. Next, Jennifer and NFL broadcaster Andrew Siciliano discuss the ways the 49ers could approach their biggest needs this offseason -- whether through free agency or the draft -- and how the 49ers can reconcile the rise in the NFL salary cap and players' salary demands with their overall strategy of getting younger and more affordable at impact positions throughout their roster. Also, Matt Maiocco and Jennifer break down the curious market for backup QB Mac Jones and which NFL teams could be in line for a new starting quarterback. -- (4:00) Where does Mac Jones fall into NFL starting QB carousel for this coming season? (6:00) Looking around the league, which QB starting situations might require a player of Jones' caliber to come in and compete (12:30) The differences between Sam Darnold and Mac Jones, and why the system and situation has to be right for Mac (16:00) 49ers and Trent Williams have a successfully established relationship; it's mutually beneficial for Trent and 49ers to move forward together (25:30) With Mac Jones not necessarily being shopped on the market, it will take a big deal to entice the 49ers to move him given his impact last season (26:00) Carthon on Purdy's development since his debut -- Shanahan had to call three different offenses with three different QBs in Purdy's first season (30:00) How Fred Warner's development from a big nickel into a box MIKE LB deserves credit from the defensive visions of Robert Saleh, DeMeco Ryans (32:00) From the top down -- Carthon said the 49ers as an organization were buttoned up in what types of players they sought and acquired Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Defense Set the Tone Across the NFL Michael Grey welcomed Kevin Kugler for one last look at the 2025-26 NFL season. The Detroit Lions Podcast audience got a simple theme. Defense carried the year. Teams with great defensive play stayed in the mix. Seattle did it. Houston did it. Denver did it. Cleveland had a good defense but lacked answers elsewhere. The lesson was clear. Pair a good defense with at least a serviceable offense and you can go a long way. Seattle's Surprise and the Sam Darnold Question Seattle opened with questions everywhere. How good would the defense be? How good would the coaching staff be? Could Sam Darnold hold up? They found answers. The defense led. The offense stayed steady. Darnold avoided the meltdown many expected. Even late, including the Super Bowl, he did not have that three interception game. It was not flashy. It was solid. That was enough. Limits Exposed: Houston, Denver, Cleveland Houston rode defense while searching for consistent quarterback play from CJ Stroud. The running game never really arrived. Still, Houston reached the divisional round because the defense was that good. Denver showed the other side. When Bo Nix went down, the margin vanished. Even a strong defense has limits when the offense dries up. Cleveland offered a final reminder. A pretty good defense, by itself, is not a plan. You need something to go with it. Copycat Season, Combine Clock This is a copycat league. Teams will try to become the next Seattle. Good luck. Finding another Nick Emmanwori will be hard. Replicating what Mike McDonald did with the Wolverines and in Baltimore will be harder. The search will expand to the transaction wire. Who is the next Sam Darnold? Who is the next Daniel Jones before injury? Veterans will get long looks. The combine is underway. The draft is coming fast. Balance is the goal. Lions fans know the assignment. Build a roster that marries reliable offense with a defense that can win field position and save possessions. That is the blueprint that traveled, week after week, across a long season in the NFL. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPUL186C-ek #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #seattleseahawks #samdarnold #houstontexans #denverdefense #clevelandbrowns #cjstroud #runninggame #divisionalround #copycatleague #mikemcdonald #baltimore #bonix #danieljones #combine #draft Learn more about your ad choices. Michael "Rooster" Phelan The "Moral Dilemma" Punch: Rooster delivers a powerful segment questioning his fandom for the New York Giants after disturbing emails surfaced regarding co-owner Steve Tisch. He takes a firm stance, stating he cannot support the team if Tisch is not forced out, sparking a deep debate on the morality of sports ownership. The "Bald Vanity" Rant: In a lighter but equally passionate moment, Rooster "punches" male athlete vanity, specifically mocking LeBron James and Jalen Brown for using hair polish and a boxer whose toupee flew off mid-fight. Homer Hopes: Rooster expresses his "homer" hope for the Giants to hire a disciplinarian coach like Tom Coughlin or John Harbaugh to bring structure to the team's young talent. Chris "Bison" Nace National Catchers Day Celebration: Bison brings an entire roster of legendary catchers—including Josh Gibson, Johnny Bench, and Gary Carter—to "the bar" in honor of National Catchers Day. The Washington Post Defense: Bison delivers a stinging "punch" to Jeff Bezos for the decline of The Washington Post's sports section, lamenting the loss of embedded local reporting and the impact on the sports community. Skepticism of the "Upstart" Patriots: Bison mockingly refers to the New England Patriots as an "upstart franchise" that has never been to a Super Bowl, before acknowledging his genuine annoyance that "they're f***ing back". Bryan Pope The Olympic History Buff: Pope shines as the resident expert on the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, sharing details about Lindsey Vonn's attempt to be the oldest medalist and the unique "luxury resort" setting of Cortina in the Dolomites. "Sir Barks-a-Lot" & Tennis: Pope explains how his 13-year-old golden retriever, Carmichael (aka Sir Barks-a-Lot), waking him up at 3AM led to him becoming an accidental expert on the Australian Open. The "Pope Stat": He provides the unique trivia that Charlie Puth is the first Jewish singer to perform the national anthem at the Super Bowl. Tobi "House" Millrood The "Birding" Quarterback: House brings fellow "birder" Sam Darnold to the bar, celebrating the quarterback's redemption arc as a "Lasso story" while defending his own hobby of ornithology and bird calls. The Manchester United Haircut Bet: House tracks the viral story of Frank Illett, a fan who hasn't cut his hair in 485 days, betting that if the team wins two more games, they will have him on the pod for a live head-shaving. The "Breaking Away" Comparison: House compares the long-suffering Indiana Hoosiers fans' recent success to the movie Breaking Away, celebrating their journey from "all thin" to a "colossal all-time ride". Patrick "Milk" Mickler The "Quad God" Aficionado: Milk stuns the other hosts with his knowledge of figure skating, introducing them to Ilya Malinin (the "Quad God") and explaining the emotional weight of the team's history following a tragic plane crash. The "Cycle of Hell": Milk provides a cynical but realistic breakdown of the "NFL cycle of hell," where good offensive coordinators are immediately hired away as head coaches, leaving teams like his Buccaneers in a constant state of turnover. The Outdoor Hockey Hype: Milk celebrates the success of the Stadium Series in Tampa, describing the "phenomenal" scene of outdoor hockey in 38-degree Florida weather.

RUNDOWN   Mitch and Hotshot Scott open Episode 372 setting the stage for the 2026 Prediction Show while reacting to Team USA's Olympic hockey gold and debating why the United States can compete in hockey but not soccer. Mitch checks in from Mariners spring training in Peoria, describing a genuine World Series vibe around the pitching staff — before admitting he needed a personal "attitude adjustment" on 22-year-old second baseman Cole Young. Mitch welcomes back Danny O'Neil, Jason Puckett, and Dave "Groz" Grosby for the 2026 Prediction Show, teasing last year's misses while crowning Puckett as the new champ. The panel makes rapid-fire forecasts on the Seahawks' 2026 season: record, playoff finish, key contract calls (Kenneth Walker, Riq Woolen, Josh Jobe, Rashid Shaheed), draft/free-agent priorities, Sam Darnold's contract future and stat lines, plus big-number projections for JSN and other core pieces. The panel shifts to college football, with Danny projecting a 12-win Washington season and a College Football Playoff berth—while also predicting major turnover with Jed Fisch and Demond Williams gone by 2027. They then pivot to baseball, where Puck and Groz forecast an AL West title and a Mariners trip to the World Series, while Danny takes the contrarian path with 88 wins and no playoffs. The panel finishes Mariners predictions with bold calls on Colt Emerson's debut date, Andrés Muñoz's save total, and the club's World Series outlook—while Danny pegs the Yankees as champions. The conversation widens to NBA expansion in Seattle, where opinions split on timeline and ownership possibilities, and then to the 2026 World Cup, with wildly different forecasts for Team USA. The segment wraps with NBA championship picks, MVP projections, and LeBron James' uncertain future as the Prediction Show heads toward its finale. The panel turns to March Madness, NFL draft projections, and bold NFL quarterback predictions before branching into golf, tennis, the World Baseball Classic, and the Kraken's playoff outlook. Danny calls for Houston to win the NCAA title, Puck backs Arizona, and Groz picks UConn—while wild swings follow on Scheffler majors, Rory's chances, and LeBron's future. The segment culminates with dramatic wild-card predictions, including a potential MLB lockout, a Jamal Crawford-led Sonics return, and a blockbuster Seahawks in-season trade.   GUESTS   Dave Grosby | Seattle sports radio personality Jason Puckett | Seattle sports radio host and founder of The Daily Puck Drop Danny O'Neil | Veteran Seattle sports columnist and longtime Seahawks analyst   TABLE OF CONTENTS   0:00 | Prediction Show Kickoff — Hockey Gold, Mariners Optimism, and a Cole Young Attitude Adjustment 22:22 | 2026 Prediction Show: Seahawks Repeat Forecasts, Roster Calls, and League-Wide Bold Picks 49:57 | 2026 Prediction Show: College Football and Mariners 2026 Predictions – Playoff Calls, Coaching Hot Seats, and a World Series Push 59:47 | 2026 Prediction Show: Mariners Prospect Timelines, World Cup Takes, NBA Futures, and Sonics Expansion Speculation 1:14:14 | 2026 Prediction Show: March Madness Picks, NFL Draft Forecasts, Golf Majors, Kraken Playoff Hopes, and Wild Card Bombshells 1:21:30 | Other Stuff Segment: USA wins men's and women's Olympic hockey gold, JSN comments on becoming highest-paid WR and looming Seahawks extensions, Zach Charbonnet ACL surgery delay raises questions, Stephen A. In Episode 8 of newly named WE Don't Know ball, formerly Allegedly Sports, M|M and Tom Schneider recap Super Bowl weekend, break down the early NFL offseason, and dive deep into one of the most honest quarterback conversations of the year. The episode opens with a candid Super Bowl recap, including why the game fell flat, what Seattle did better, and why one loss doesn't erase a strong Patriots season. M|M and Tom discuss Drake Maye's late-season regression, the role of experience, injuries, and weather, and why defensive performances often get overlooked when the offense stalls. From there, the conversation shifts to franchise tags, salary cap decisions, and how teams recover from massive contract mistakes. Using recent examples, they explore why coaching stability and leadership matter more than public panic. Quarterback “retreads” become the central theme as M|M and Tom debate which former starters still have upside in the right system. Names like Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Mac Jones, Kyler Murray, Justin Fields, and others are evaluated through the lens of opportunity, coaching, and pressure — not just raw talent. The episode wraps with thoughts on the NBA All-Star Game, praising the renewed competitiveness while questioning the future of the dunk contest and the importance of star participation. Real debate, real context, no hot takes. The guys bounce from 19th-century presidential conspiracies to the grim reality of the New York Jets' quarterback carousel. After debating whether modern society would actually care if a massive Abraham Lincoln assassination cover-up dropped today (and taking a quick detour into the FCC's rules on cursing inspired by George Carlin), it's back to the gridiron. The crew brutally assesses Zach Wilson's extinct NFL future, comparing his trajectory to Sam Darnold's redemption arc, and debates where a newly released Geno Smith fits into the backup QB landscape. Finally, they highlight the biggest under-the-radar offseason priority in New York: why re-signing offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker is an absolute must, regardless of his injury history or projected $14 million market value.

This week we're back breaking down the snooze fest of a Super Bowl we had to watch and an especially sore moment for us Vikings fans having to watch Sam Darnold win a Super Bowl one year after being let out of the building by the Vikings. New England's soft schedule was finally exposed and it seems the NFC is just a much tougher division than the AFC. We also get into quarterbacks fake sliding and just being bad at sliding in general as well as the NBA circus. Former All-Pro LB Luke Kuechly tells Rich what it means to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, discusses the Carolina Panthers' big turnaround last season going from worst to first in the NFC South, and weighs in on Sam Darnold's inspiring redemption story that culminated in a Super Bowl win for the Seattle Seahawks QB. RUNDOWN   Episode 371 opens with Mitch's Saturday night unraveling after watching Song Sung Blue and realizing the Buddy Holly–impersonating character played by Michael Imperioli is allegedly his celebrity twin — a comparison he loudly rejects as it derails the entire movie. With Hotshot fanning the flames, the show pivots into the annual Prediction Show recap, replaying last year's bold Seahawks takes — including a seven-win forecast and Mike Macdonald job jeopardy — before grading every prediction and crowning a 2025 champion. Mitch revisits last year's Prediction Show, replaying Dave Grosby, Jason Puckett, and Danny O'Neil's confident forecasts for 2025 — from Russell Wilson's salary and Geno Smith's future to Mike Macdonald's job security and a Seahawks Super Bowl run no one predicted. The segment tracks hits, misses, and wildly wrong calls, including gloomy seven-win projections and John Schneider pink slips that never came. With halftime scoring tallied and bragging rights on the line, the stage is set for Episode 372's official crowning of the 2025 Prediction Champion. The second half of the 2025 Prediction Show grading delivers more swings and misses as Mitch revisits bold calls from Dave Grosby, Jason Puckett, and Danny O'Neil on Julio Rodríguez, Cal Raleigh's contract, Paul Skenes, Shohei Ohtani, Tiger Woods, NBA expansion, and Sam Darnold's future. From Oklahoma City's title run to Pete Carroll playoff dreams and wild card chaos involving Jeff Bezos and the Kraken, the predictions range from razor-close to wildly off base. Mitch and Professor Slick bask in the lingering glow of the Seahawks' Super Bowl championship before veering into breaking "news" that Mitch left his iconic bell in Santa Clara — sparking a hilarious Rocky-inspired replacement plan involving Bunco night. The conversation shifts to spring training, where Slick sounds early alarms about the Mariners' pitching depth and offensive ceiling, while Mitch pushes back with optimism centered on Bryce Miller's return to form.   GUESTS   Dave Grosby | Seattle sports radio personality Jason Puckett | Seattle sports radio host and founder of The Daily Puck Drop Danny O'Neil | Veteran Seattle sports columnist and longtime Seahawks analyst Professor Slick | Seattle sports commentator and longtime Seahawks fan favorite   TABLE OF CONTENTS   0:00 | Doppelgänger Meltdown, Birthday Roll Call, and the Prediction Show Reckoning 19:09 | Prediction Show Reckoning — Revisiting the Bold (and Brutal) 2025 Forecasts. 34:37 | Prediction Show Reckoning, Part II — Bold Claims, Wild Cards, and a Surprise Champion 49:03 | GUEST: Professor Slick; "I Left My Bell in Santa Clara" — Super Bowl Afterglow, Aging, and Early Mariners Anxiety 1:21:30 | Other Stuff Segment: Jason Puckett wins 2025 Prediction Show title, David Crosby predicts Seahawks win 7 games and miss playoffs, Canadian curler Mark Kennedy profanity blowup at Sweden's Oscar Erickson over alleged rock-touching violation, Mitch's Winter Olympics viewing habits and curling being "hypnotic", 12th Man Rising floats Seahawks sale idea to Mackenzie Scott and Melinda Gates, NBA All-Star Weekend boredom and Mac McClung dunk contest absence, viral AI "Michael Jordan" dunk contest rant, Adam Silver expansion comments with Seattle + Las Vegas timeline frustration, Mariners nearly reaching World Series plus Seahawks Super Bowl creating "Seattle sports trifecta" potential with NBA return, Charlie Woods commits to Florida State over Stanford, Sam Darnold and Kenneth Walker Disneyland teacups video, Tyson vs Mayweather tease, Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid(?) emotional cheating confession post-medal interview, Joey Porter Sr. blasts Ben Roethlisberger as a bad teammate/person, Stefon Diggs arraignment over alleged assault of personal chef, Britney Spears sells music catalog rights to Primary Wave for $200M RIPs: James VanDerBeek, Tracy Scroggins
