492: Seahawks Suffocate 49ers - Best Defense in NFL Heads to Bye Week

Sea Hawkers Podcast for Seattle Seahawks fans

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 8, 2026 99:23

The Seattle Seahawks have earned their bye week as the NFC's top seed, and the dominance couldn't be sweeter. Mike McDonald's squad dismantled the 49ers in a performance that left no question about who was the top team in the NFC. T Jaxon Smith-Njigba capped off a historic season with 1,793 receiving yards—outpacing the entire New York Jets receiving corps—while the offensive evolution under Klint Kubiak has transformed Seattle from an explosive passing attack into a balanced team that others will fear in the playoffs. Charles Cross locked in a four-year, $104 million extension that looks like a very team friendly deal. The value only gets better when considering the contract takes him through age 30, giving Seattle bookend tackles with Abraham Lucas secured for the foreseeable future. Kubiak may have a future as a head coaching candidate. The Ravens job seems like a legitimate landing spot if he leaves, though there's zero interest in discussing coordinator departures while chasing a Lombardi. The wild card weekend brings a cursed Rams team to Carolina, where Dave Canales goes full circle back to when Seattle faced the Saints. We talk about the other playoff teams in the NFC and which could be considered "fraudulent." In Do Better, PFF takes a beating for rating Sam Darnold's solid performances against Carolina and San Francisco close to the same as Bryce Young and significantly lower than Brock Purdy. Arguments with AI also fall into the Do Better bin. Better at Life honors go to JSN and the Seahawks 2025 defense. Join our Sea Hawkers Podcast Pickem League - free prizes for weekly winners. Previewing this weekend's games, why are Bobby and Matt on different sides of 49ers/Eagles? How will the Steelers hold up against the Texans defense? The Rams visit the Panthers. Matt questions the Eagles decision to rest their starters against the Commanders. Bobby wonders why no one is talking about an Eagles repeat. Has the opportunity to win the Super Bowl ever been more open to every playoff team? Matt explains how teams scout for potential opponents through the postseason. The Ravens are making changes, but Matt doesn't think Lamar Jackson should be one of those changes. Bobby updates his NFL Power Rankings before we look at the best head coaching jobs available. Seahawks Linebacker Boye Mafe joins the show to talk about how he feels getting the #1 seed and having one of the highest ranked defenses and breaks down his play of tipping the ball that resulted in the Drake Thomas interception. // The Seahawks defense has exceeded expectations for this season, how much will they have to overcome with the potential shortcoming of the Seahawks offense? // It’s that time of year again, the day that NFL teams fire their head coaches and begin the search for the future. Raheem Morris of the Falcons, Kevin Stefanski of the browns, Jonathan Gannon of the Cardinals, and Pete Carroll of the Raiders were all let go by their organizations. // The guys give us their feelings towards Sam Darnold after he had a solid performance on Saturday against the 49ers. He did not turn the ball over in the game and that has been his biggest problem this season.

Hugh Millen, Hardcore Football! What a weekend of football, can Hugh sit back and relax to watch the games this weekend? Probably not. How much does the volume of the 12s impede on the defense, as much as the players love the way it messes with the opposing offense? Hugh tells us what he's rooting for this weekend. Finally, while we saw some great drafts and acquisitions this year, there are some little moves that made all the difference. Hugh Millen continues with Ian to break down the Seahawks' defense in Saturday's game. He also shares his thoughts on Pete Carroll's firing in Las Vegas today. Hugh Millen wraps things up with an evaluation of Seattle's run game as we saw it yesterday. Finally, what did he see from Sam Darnold? He did well at the things he was asked to do, while he also wasn't asked to do too much. Mike Sando, The Athletic has a grasp on all things going on throughout the league on this Black Monday - did any of the moves surprise them? He reacts to Raheem Morris' firing, as well as Pete Carroll's one and done year in Vegas. He gives thought on the rest the moves around the league and what it tells him about the respective teams who made them. Checking in on the Text Line! Join us as we celebrate the Seahawks defensive dominance on their way to victory and clinching of the NFC West title. We highlight the ineptitude of the 49ers offense that was considered one of the hottest in football coming into Week 18. But CMC and Purdy were shut down entirely thanks to relentless pressure from the Seahawks front. Nick Emmanwori stood out as he continues his campaign for defensive rookie of the year and Drake Thomas came up with a clutch turnover late in the game to help keep the Niners out of the end zone. The offense didn't need many points. They controlled the clock with Ken Walker and Zach Charbonnet balancing out an efficent game by Sam Darnold. The biggest critique was a missed touchdown opportunity that could have broken the 49ers spirit much earlier. We touch on the potential opponents the Seahawks could face in two weeks as the Packers, Rams, Niners and the NFC South champion all have potential to visit Seattle for the divisional round.   Join our Sea Hawkers Podcast Pickem League - free prizes for weekly winners.
