Question: What's something stupid that you used to encourage your younger sibling or friends to do, even though you knew it was a terrible idea? (eg. Used to get your brother to do stupid social pranks like the Tide Pod challenge for social, you would always make your sister sneak the booze out of your parents liquor cabinet, you friend Zach could be talked into anything so you'd make him pull the fire alarm or go streaking anytime you were bored, etc) Show Features: Karen Chronicles, Super Stupid Spelling Bee, Cover Your Ears Socials: @DaveandMahoney Voice Mail: 833-Yo-Dummy https://www.twitch.tv/daveandmahoney Additional Content: daveandmahoney.com See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our listener’s choice recaps three topics: (R)ICE tables, titrations and buffers. We start with the RICE table - what does it actually stand for? (0:49). RICE tables are best explained with an example. In our case: The reaction of gaseous hydrogen with gaseous chlorine to form gaseous hydrogen chloride - a reaction that has a K = 49. And we are calculating the concentrations at equilibrium (1:44)! Two important tips for RICE tables: (1) practice, practice, practice; (2) make assumptions (4:09).Our next two topics are connected: titrations and buffers. We start with the titration of a strong acid/strong base and discuss the calculation of the pH at several points along the titration curve (6:01). Our second example is the titration of a weak acid with a strong base. Again, we discuss the pH calculations along the titration curve, but then focus on buffers, which are formed when the weak acid is partially neutralized (7:29). The episode defines buffers and describes how they work (8:00). Moving along the titration curve, we discuss the calculations for buffers and the midway point of the titration (9:18), the calculations at equivalence point (10:03) and beyond the equivalence point.Question: What will be the approximate pH of an equimolar solution of NH3 and HCl?Thank you for listening to The APsolute RecAP: Chemistry Edition!(AP is a registered trademark of the College Board and is not affiliated with The APsolute RecAP. There is no #RestoreTheSnyderverse without "GIVE US A MOTHER F&$%ING FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, DAMN IT!" Its trailer, at 2015's E3, brought countless grown men and women to tears. Introduction Context: Ch22 - binding of Isaac; celebration of deeper trust; confirmation of blessings by grace of God We talk about living by faith a lot What does it mean? Question: When we say, "Let's live by faith", what does that mean to you?It means, according to the NT, taking lessons from Abraham's life“By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise. And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore. All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.” (Hebrews 11:8–19 1. Faith is responsiveQUESTION: "What examples can you think of when Abraham was responsive?" “By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.” (Hebrews 11:8)“The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran.” (Genesis 12:1–4 Go when called. They could have gone back to Ur, but were content to live and not see the fulfilment of the land promise. They knew, by faith, that it would come to their descendants. If they trusted God for something that in the OC was not made clear, how much more we should have faith for our heavenly inheritance which has been made abundantly clear. 2. Faith is SacrificialQUESTION: "What examples can you think of when Abraham was sacrificial?" “By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.” (Hebrews 11:9 NIV11) His home in Ur was much nicer! Left comfort & security, even family. Probably similar situations were paralleled among the Jewish Christians at the time Hebrews was written. A life of movement, not settling: Ur, Haraan, Canaan, Egypt etc 3. Faith is CourageousQUESTION: "What examples can you think of when Abraham was courageous?" “even though he did not know where he was going.” (Hebrews 11:8 NIV11) Did not know where he was going. Detail only came later. Takes courage to believe the promises, (Gn. 12:2; cf. Gen 13:16; Gen 15:5). Isaac on mountain - courage to trust.Abraham refused to limit God’s power or the method through which He would keep His promise, and therefore he did not limit his obedience. 4. Faith is PersistentQUESTION: "What examples can you think of when Abraham was persistent?" “Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.” (Romans 4:18–21 NIV11) Lived among strangers in a land he was told be would inherit, but they were still there!"Waiting for God to provide them with an earthly inheritance, the patriarchs came to realise that this life is not an end in itself but a pilgrimage towards a future that God alone can construct for his people." New Bible Commentary: 21st Century Edition. Edited by Carson, D. A, R. T France, J. A. Motyer, and Gordon J. Wenham: InterVarsity Press, 1994. We aim to be living by faith when we die. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob all died without receiving the land of Canaan as an earthly inheritance. “All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.” (Hebrews 11:13 NIV11) ‘welcomed them from a distance’ = ‘hailed it with delight’, Brown 206. Died not seeing reward, but did see it in another sense. The people commended here were: confident, proud to witness to their faith, seeking something better, able to discern what was of real value, willing to put their security in the unseen. 5. Faith is DependantQUESTION: "What examples can you think of when Abraham was dependant on God?" “By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.” (Hebrews 11:17–19 NIV11)“As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.” (Genesis 22:6–8 NIV11) Although there was lack of clarity, there was still faith. Abraham saw God as his 'solution', the only one to hold on to. Questions in breakout roomsQUESTION: "How do you know when you are hearing the 'call' of God to live by faith? What helps you to respond by faith?" QUESTION: "What helps you to live by faith when that means sacrificing some of the comforts of this world enjoyed by people who do not live by faith?" QUESTION: "Is there an area of life right now where you sense God calling you to courageously live by faith? What would it look like to be courageous in that situation?" QUESTION: "What helps you to persevere in your life of faith when you cannot see the end? What keeps your spiritual vision clear enough to inspire you to persevere in living by faith?" QUESTION: "What does it mean to you to be dependant on God by faith? What does that look like?" Conclusion“Abraham lived a hundred and seventy-five years. Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, an old man and full of years; and he was gathered to his people. His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite, the field Abraham had bought from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah. Our episode starts with a clarification of using the terms thermodynamically favored vs spontaneous (1:19). To determine if a reaction is thermodynamically favored, we calculate Gibbs Free Energy using the Gibbs Free Energy of formation (2:45). Taking a closer look at Gibbs Free Energy we relate it to enthalpy and entropy and look at four different situations: exothermic and increase in entropy as well as endothermic and decrease in entropy don’t require calculations (3:37). But what if I have a reaction that is endothermic but increases entropy (5:46) or a reaction that is exothermic and decreases entropy (6:36)? We have to take the temperature into account!Question: What is the standard state for a solution in terms of concentration?Thank you for listening to The APsolute RecAP: Chemistry Edition!(AP is a registered trademark of the College Board and is not affiliated with The APsolute RecAP. George wants to double his company’s revenue this year. He’s been stating this goal for the past 3 years and still hasn’t achieved it. Why?Because it’s not ecologically safe for him to have this outcome. There is a subconscious tug o’war we all experience between our desires and our ecology. Our ecology formed our belief system, our frame of reference, our identity, our capabilities—and it also prevents us from getting what we want.Until we know how to change it.Change the Present…Let’s find out why George isn’t getting the doubled revenue he wants. Here’s what we learned when we worked through a basic Outcome Frame with him:Question: What would you like? He answered: To double revenue this year.Question: What will having that do for you? Answer: I’ll feel secure, be happy, have peace of mind, have less stress and a cash cushion, feel confident that we got to the next level and the business is scalable, work less, know my team can step up. (Note: What he really wants is to feel safe—to let go of control and know it’ll be ok)Question: How will you know when you have it (specifically)? Answer: Doubled revenue from last year.Question: So there you are in the future and you have what you want. What risk might you take to ensure this change is going to happen? His answer: I might have to let go of some control--delegate more, promote some high performers and let a few low performers go, let my VP Sales run with our plan, stop micro-managing our VP Operations. (Here comes the good stuff!)Question: What will likely happen if you don’t solve this the way you want? What will be the impact on your business and life? His answer: We’ll be stuck in the same rut we’ve been in for 3 years, we won’t be able to grow the business and sell it for the $70mil+ that we want to, my family members and I won’t get to cash out and we’ll one day have to wind the business down—without securing our and our children’s financial future.Question: What might someone have to believe about the world or company or situation to get this? Answer: That this is possible, that they have the team to achieve this outcome, that more clients want what we have, that we can find these clients.Question: What might you have to believe about yourself? His answer: That I can let go and things won’t fall apart, that my team wants to rise up.Question: What can you appreciate about the current situation prior to change? (What’s great about holding onto control?) He answered: I know what the outcome will be—even if it isn’t what I want, I trust myself and don’t have to rely on others. From this process, George realized that his key issue was fear of letting go of control, yet he would have to do this (to a degree) in order to let his team help him double revenue. But knowing this intellectually isn’t enough—in the thick of battle, George will still default to controlling behavior, because it is rooted in his subconscious mind. So we need to change this.… Change the Past…After we completed the Outcome Frame, it was time to excavate. Where did George’s controlling behavior begin? Why was relying on others so threatening? We had to find out by asking the following questions:Can you recall a time when you didn’t feel you had to control things? Was there a major life trauma when your level of controlling increased? Is there a trigger event you experience regularly when your controlling kicks into high gear? The life trauma was the answer. When his parents divorced, George was 7 years old. He then became the man of the house, and his father all but disappeared. Little George decided then that he would never be at the mercy of others, and such a life-altering experience, again. He’d shape his world and keep it in check.Except that strategy no longer works for him.So he asked me to help him change it. We did a process we call Movie Theatre, where we guided George through observing this childhood trauma from a distance and then de-fusing the beliefs he formed then. We helped him edit his identity and belief system, which is one of the deepest levels of change we mentioned in an earlier podcast this season. It was key to set structures in place to help him change his capabilities and behavior as a leader of his company. We continued coaching George and began working with his executive team to shift too. The executive team had supported the command-and-control culture that George had created—they were now part of the System that everyone wanted to change.… Change the FutureFast forward 9 months: George is nearing his fiscal year end. Revenue will double this year, wrapping up at a healthy $22mil. What’s next? Now we’re going to double the bottom line and increase the asset base in our continuing plan to strengthen George’s company for acquisition. I’d like to see him get $95mil+ for his company instead of his $70mil goal.Isn’t it fascinating that our company and its performance is directly tied to who we are and what behaviors limit us? We self-sabotage and don't even know it! The key is to root out the true reason we aren't getting what we want and clear it. My preference is to use neuroscience techniques to do this. What do you want that you aren't getting? Let's root out the reason together.Show Notes:STI Outcome Frame InfographicPower Your Tribe Graphic – The Structure of Human Behavior See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Question: What to do when different folate markers don’t line upYou know, if you have high figlu on the NutrEval, which is Formiminoglutamic acid, which rises when there is Tetrahydrofolate THF, unmethylated folate, to metabolize figlu, and in that case, I would be thinking about maybe you have a B12 deficiency that is leading to the trapping of folate as the methylfolate form, so that THF isn't regenerated for that reaction. So I would absolutely never use figlu as the only marker of folate. I would look at serum folate and red blood cell folate always as the first markers of folate. So in this case, I would look at your serum folate and your red blood cell folate. So before I would get folate injections, I would be looking at all those markers to see whether there's a coherent story between all of them that are agreeing that your folate status is low despite supplements, versus a divergence story between them that is telling me that one form of folate is the one that's missing rather than a total folate. Click, click, click - you picture has been taken! Our episode starts with describing entropy with respect to the dispersal of matter and compares it to the snapshots or microstates (0:30). The phase changes are examples of increases of dispersal of matter (1:06). Entropy can also be defined as an increase of the dispersal of energy and therefore we tie it to KMT (3:50). The change in entropy can be calculated by subtracting the sum of the entropy of the reactants from the sum of the entropy of products (4:53).Question: What is the sign of ΔSo for the formation of NaCl from its elements?Thank you for listening to The APsolute RecAP: Chemistry Edition!(AP is a registered trademark of the College Board and is not affiliated with The APsolute RecAP. Study 1 : Job 1 - 2 Terrible disasters hit Job. The book of Job is totally fascinating – but difficult. It is deeply concerned with the question of wisdom – how does one live well – but we will leave consideration of that to later in our studies when the question rises to the surface. In particular the book deals with the questions that arise when disaster strikes. There are no clear answers to the questions it poses. Instead there are lengthy dialogues between Job and his three friends, then between him and a rather brash young fellow and only finally with God. We are left to think and puzzle over what is said and draw our own conclusions rather than treating it as an authoritative text that tells us things we should believe or do. One commentator says “we need to be transparent about the hazards of being human and teach the full witness of Scripture, which is messy, complex and, ultimately, wonderfully true.” That is nowhere more the case than in the book of Job. This is an attempt to teach that full witness as we are given it in this book. Job Chapter 1 What a situation! Before looking at it in any detail here is an overview of what is to come. The book tackles two major questions in particular: Question 1: why is it not true that good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people. A Psalmist realised that when he said “For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills. This is what the wicked are like – always free of care, they go on amassing wealth. Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence” Then the major question 2) is: how can it be that our world, and our life in it, is subject to so much chaos. It also raises two other questions that follow from those two: 3) how can we live wisely in this difficult environment and 4) how can we trust in the reliability of God if he presides over such an erratic world. We will not get complete and totally satisfactory answers to those questions but we will be forced to think through our attitudes towards them and come to a deeper appreciation of this world we live in and the God who created and now controls it. Question 1 revolves round one false idea that was common in those days and is still very common today. That is that everything that happens to us has a moral cause behind it leading to the effect we see. We will call this a CEP – cause/effect principle. It suggests that if I am good only good things will happen to me; if I am bad then bad things will happen to me. That leads to commonly heard statements like “he didn’t deserve that”, implying that something terrible has happened to an essentially good person and that it shouldn’t have done. The CEP does, of course, operate in the physical world: if you put salt in water you get salt water; if you kick the table leg you will get a bruised toe. The book of Job teaches us that a principle like that does not operate in the moral and ethical world. Question 2 revolves around what we will call the NCL – normal chaos of life. Many Christians would query use of the word chaos in relation to the way the world works but it does seem to be the right word to use in this book. We will question the use of it more closely in study 9. As we shall see the book of Job teaches us that life is not well ordered. It hasn’t been since the Creation. However difficult it may be to accept that God did not create a neat and well ordered world but one that appears to us to be a thoroughly erratic one that is what he did and we have to live in it. To move on to the detail of chapter 1, here it is. Job was probably a real person who gave rise to many stories. He lived in the Middle East, but not in Israel, sometime about the same time as Abraham. The book was written by an Israelite much later, probably about 700 BC possibly using an old beginning and the end as a frame into which he put the lengthy poetical dialogue which is the main part of the book. The obvious intention was to do something to answer some of the questions raised by the old tale. We will look at selected sections of the book, not all of it, which can be thought a bit repetitive. The Satan of this chapter is not the devil of later books of the Bible. He is a member of the Angelic Council (1: 6). He is the Accuser, the prosecuting counsel before the Lord, a sort of Attorney-General so we are straight into a courtroom type of thinking. We shall soon find that much of the book is concerned with Job wanting a judicial review of his case. He wants to be able to argue his case before the Lord. Chapter 2 The challenge and counter-challenge between the Lord and the Satan in these first 2 chapters are curious to our eyes. The point in that culture is that if Job does not love God for his own sake, but for what he can get out of it, the honour of God is severely damaged. He would be shamed. To explain that: if a woman loves a man, not for his own sake but because he is rich we – in the Western world anyway – would not think well of the woman. But in this ancient culture it would bring more shame on the man. Similarly if Job does not love God for his, God’s sake, that brings shame on God rather more than on Job. I’m going to ask some questions, pause briefly to let you think about them – and possibly use the pause button to do so – then pass comments on them. Question: Some people’s first reaction to extreme trauma would be like Job’s; tearing his robe’s and shaving his head (but perhaps not worshipping as Job did). Stop and think for a moment: how would you react to extreme trauma? Would you let everyone know about your grief or would you bottle it all up inside? How long for? Would this be a healthy thing to do? Answer: Of course I don’t know what your reaction would be. Possibly you don’t either as we often don’t know ourselves very well in situations like this until we actually experience them. The way we react to such things is very dependent on the culture of our society. Westerners tend to bottle things up. Other cultures are often more open about grief and better at sharing it. Question: Which of the 3 friends actions here would you think most helpful to Job? How would you act in such a situation? How should you act? Answer: Their silent sharing of his grief would most helpful to him. There would be a great temptation to say all the culturally approved things, many of which are not very helpful. It is a great gift to be able to say truly helpful things in a situation like this. The Lord said to the Accuser “you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.” Question: What are the implications of that statement? What does it tell us? Answer: all things are in the hands of the Lord, both good and bad. The Bible never teaches the existence of a good God and a bad Satan, or nature, or anything with a power that God does not control. Even when Paul talks about “the devil’s schemes. … the powers of this dark world … the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. … and the evil one” he is talking about powers that are acting only with the express permission of the Lord God. That is hard to understand, but it is the way the Bible speaks of such things throughout. The most stunning statement in these chapters is Job’s reaction to what has happened: the Lord gave and the Lord has taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord. Question: What does this tell us about Job’s view of God and his relationship to him – and therefore of what ours should be? Answer: Job had a deep sense of relationship with God that had not been shaken by the appalling external events. For those of us (Westerners in particular) who are encouraged to seek our own good before anything and everything else, thus doing things like divorcing a spouse who no longer seems best for us, this approach to our own gratification is a fundamentally important lesson. Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12 https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 Adam Bryant interviewed more than 500 CEOs for “Corner Office,” a series on leadership that he created in 2009. Adam is the author of three books based on the themes that have emerged from his interviews and consulting work. His new book is THE CEO Test: Master the Challenges that Make or Break All Leaders. Notes: Interview style - Instead of asking them about strategies and industry trends, Adam focuses on timeless questions (how they were influenced by parents, lessons from early years in their careers, what they look for when making bets on people to invest in) about the important leadership lessons that CEOs had learned… Some questions he likes to ask: How do you hire? What questions do you ask? Describe yourself in one word... Work to get around the polished façade What animal would you be and why? Tony Hsieh would ask, "On a scale of 1-10, how weird are you?" Some additional interviewing tactics: The CEO has the interviewee drive his or her car. Monitors how they react in a different vehicle, in a new city Sharing meals "Put the mosaic of what a person is like as a human being" -- not just interviewing for a job The Dinner Party game: "If you could only ask a job candidate one question, what would you ask?" Learn about failure - Id you desire humility, learn about their failures, learnings, and lessons of life Ownership - The 3 most beautiful words: "I'm on it." Every employee needs to write a playbook to how they'd do the job... They need to take ownership. If you were an animal, what would you be? Adam: "A Hawk. Hover at high altitude, when they figure out what they want, they go get it." Question: What qualities of your parents do you like the most and the least? Ask that if you really want to go deep -- This forces the candidate to get real. "We're fooling ourselves if we think we can escape our parents." Process to ask questions: Think, "I want to cut a record with you." -- Have the desire to make something new with the person. His premise at the New York Times: "What if I sat down with CEOs and never asked them about their companies?" Questions: What were you like as a kid? What were your parents like? How have your parents impacted your leadership style? What drives you? "I like to see them in the moment of learning about themselves." "Eye contact is the 5 G of communication." Two tracking - Know where to go next AND listen intently Sustaining Excellence: Feedback look must be strong - They must be open to it Recognize patterns Take action Learn new things Be self-aware Be humble Need to ask, "What does this moment need?" "What is the gooey center of that candy?" A leader needs to know that about their business. Life advice: "Play in traffic." You have to get out there and meet people and do things. Build relationships. Those help with the pivot points of your career and life. Always be prepared to learn the most important lesson of your life...

Dave's Mom will straight up grab 15K napkins and condiments and toss em in the purse, Mahoney's old Bob's Big Boy got lifted outside, you'll take a nice steak knife if you given one, you used to swipe those neon signs from bars when you worked there, etc) show features: blooper reel, beer for breakfast, cover your ears Socials: @DaveandMahoney Voice Mail: 833-Yo-Dummy https://www.twitch.tv/daveandmahoney Additional Content: daveandmahoney.com See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Question: What supplements should be taken by someone on PPIs?I would first consider what you should do to get off the PPI. And so PPIs Are targeting stomach acid. And so I would first and foremost be thinking of excess histamine might be leading to excess stomach acid. You should probably try to eat a higher-protein diet, unless you're getting negative consequences from poor protein digestion. But if you're poorly digesting your protein, you are going to need more protein to nourish yourself. So I would think a higher protein diet and a multivitamin would really be the best things because there's too many nutrients whose absorption is going to be compromised by that. And then I don't really consider myself a gut specialist, but I would read up on what other people who are specializing in the gut are saying about how to compensate for PPI's with the microbiome, because I would think that would also come into play. I’m a female firefighter and some days I don’t have time to work out and I feel tired from lack of sleep and then won’t have the energy to work out following my shift. What is your take on rest days and deload weeks? Additionally, I have low cortisol as a result of years of firefighting on top of trying to maintain a heavy workout routine 5x a week with some 2-a-days. Sometimes I try to make up for missed workouts at work so I jam it into my days off even if I’m tired from minimal sleep the nights before. So I was wondering if someone with low cortisol would benefit from more rest. I’m finding it hard to be okay with multiple rest days a week and also can tell I’m getting weaker the more I try to spin my wheels and train through fatigue.
