Acts 14.14-15 NLT But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard what was happening, they tore their clothing in dismay and ran out among the people, shouting, “Friends, why are you doing this? We are merely human beings— just like you!” After Paul and Barnabas were rudely bundled out of Iconium, they fled 19 miles south to the small Roman city of Lystra. They may well have presumed that Paul's status as a Roman citizen would mean that they would receive more respect there. Paul was involved in the healing of a man who had been lame from birth and the people were so excited that they concluded that Paul and Barnabas must be gods. The missionaries were slow to understand what was going on because the people were speaking in their own local language. Things went from bad to much worse when the priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, turned up with bulls and wreaths in order to offer sacrifices to Paul and Barnabas. Paul was determined to put the matter straight as soon as possible. He was clearly horrified to be thought of as a god. In his fury and sadness, he dramatically tore his clothes and assured the crowd that they had totally misunderstood the situation. Far from being gods, he and Barnabas had come in the name of the one living God. Every public speaker is well aware of the danger of being misunderstood. This is a particularly dramatic illustration, but the principle is the same for anyone who opens their mouth in public. If you are a public speaker then you need always to have more than a small dose of humility. However carefully you prepare and speak, there will be occasions when you are completely misunderstood. This should prompt us all to pray for preachers and teachers who perform such a vital and challenging role. QUESTION: Which particular preacher or teacher do you need to pray for? PRAYER: Loving God, grant us your wisdom and a spirit of humility as we speak your truth and as we listen to others. Amen

Question: Which is more important—visual or lean? Answer: Bad question. Visual and lean share a single destination: operational excellence. Listen this week as Gwendolyn Galsworth, your host and visual expert, explains why visual and lean represent a single comprehensive improvement strategy but with a telling difference in focus, process, and metric. They are allies, yet importantly and exquisitely different. Visual’s name for the enemy is information deficits; its macro metric is motion/moving without working. Its goal? Build flow. Build adherence. Lean targets the critical path; its macro measure is time and its corollary, speed. Its job is to dis-entangle the path that value follows—and then put pull in place. Which is more important: time or information? Another bad question. Like the wings of a bird, visual and lean are separate yet equal in impact. Ask a bird which of its wings is more important, and it will answer by flying off. Tune in/learn more. Let the workplace speak.
Study 1 : Job 1 - 2 Terrible disasters hit Job. The book of Job is totally fascinating – but difficult. It is deeply concerned with the question of wisdom – how does one live well – but we will leave consideration of that to later in our studies when the question rises to the surface. In particular the book deals with the questions that arise when disaster strikes. There are no clear answers to the questions it poses. Instead there are lengthy dialogues between Job and his three friends, then between him and a rather brash young fellow and only finally with God. We are left to think and puzzle over what is said and draw our own conclusions rather than treating it as an authoritative text that tells us things we should believe or do. One commentator says “we need to be transparent about the hazards of being human and teach the full witness of Scripture, which is messy, complex and, ultimately, wonderfully true.” That is nowhere more the case than in the book of Job. This is an attempt to teach that full witness as we are given it in this book. Job Chapter 1 What a situation! Before looking at it in any detail here is an overview of what is to come. The book tackles two major questions in particular: Question 1: why is it not true that good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people. A Psalmist realised that when he said “For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills. This is what the wicked are like – always free of care, they go on amassing wealth. Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence” Then the major question 2) is: how can it be that our world, and our life in it, is subject to so much chaos. It also raises two other questions that follow from those two: 3) how can we live wisely in this difficult environment and 4) how can we trust in the reliability of God if he presides over such an erratic world. We will not get complete and totally satisfactory answers to those questions but we will be forced to think through our attitudes towards them and come to a deeper appreciation of this world we live in and the God who created and now controls it. Question 1 revolves round one false idea that was common in those days and is still very common today. That is that everything that happens to us has a moral cause behind it leading to the effect we see. We will call this a CEP – cause/effect principle. It suggests that if I am good only good things will happen to me; if I am bad then bad things will happen to me. That leads to commonly heard statements like “he didn’t deserve that”, implying that something terrible has happened to an essentially good person and that it shouldn’t have done. The CEP does, of course, operate in the physical world: if you put salt in water you get salt water; if you kick the table leg you will get a bruised toe. The book of Job teaches us that a principle like that does not operate in the moral and ethical world. Question 2 revolves around what we will call the NCL – normal chaos of life. Many Christians would query use of the word chaos in relation to the way the world works but it does seem to be the right word to use in this book. We will question the use of it more closely in study 9. As we shall see the book of Job teaches us that life is not well ordered. It hasn’t been since the Creation. However difficult it may be to accept that God did not create a neat and well ordered world but one that appears to us to be a thoroughly erratic one that is what he did and we have to live in it. To move on to the detail of chapter 1, here it is. Job was probably a real person who gave rise to many stories. He lived in the Middle East, but not in Israel, sometime about the same time as Abraham. The book was written by an Israelite much later, probably about 700 BC possibly using an old beginning and the end as a frame into which he put the lengthy poetical dialogue which is the main part of the book. The obvious intention was to do something to answer some of the questions raised by the old tale. We will look at selected sections of the book, not all of it, which can be thought a bit repetitive. The Satan of this chapter is not the devil of later books of the Bible. He is a member of the Angelic Council (1: 6). He is the Accuser, the prosecuting counsel before the Lord, a sort of Attorney-General so we are straight into a courtroom type of thinking. We shall soon find that much of the book is concerned with Job wanting a judicial review of his case. He wants to be able to argue his case before the Lord. Chapter 2 The challenge and counter-challenge between the Lord and the Satan in these first 2 chapters are curious to our eyes. The point in that culture is that if Job does not love God for his own sake, but for what he can get out of it, the honour of God is severely damaged. He would be shamed. To explain that: if a woman loves a man, not for his own sake but because he is rich we – in the Western world anyway – would not think well of the woman. But in this ancient culture it would bring more shame on the man. Similarly if Job does not love God for his, God’s sake, that brings shame on God rather more than on Job. I’m going to ask some questions, pause briefly to let you think about them – and possibly use the pause button to do so – then pass comments on them. Question: Some people’s first reaction to extreme trauma would be like Job’s; tearing his robe’s and shaving his head (but perhaps not worshipping as Job did). Stop and think for a moment: how would you react to extreme trauma? Would you let everyone know about your grief or would you bottle it all up inside? How long for? Would this be a healthy thing to do? Answer: Of course I don’t know what your reaction would be. Possibly you don’t either as we often don’t know ourselves very well in situations like this until we actually experience them. The way we react to such things is very dependent on the culture of our society. Westerners tend to bottle things up. Other cultures are often more open about grief and better at sharing it. Question: Which of the 3 friends actions here would you think most helpful to Job? How would you act in such a situation? How should you act? Answer: Their silent sharing of his grief would most helpful to him. There would be a great temptation to say all the culturally approved things, many of which are not very helpful. It is a great gift to be able to say truly helpful things in a situation like this. The Lord said to the Accuser “you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.” Question: What are the implications of that statement? What does it tell us? Answer: all things are in the hands of the Lord, both good and bad. The Bible never teaches the existence of a good God and a bad Satan, or nature, or anything with a power that God does not control. Even when Paul talks about “the devil’s schemes. … the powers of this dark world … the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. … and the evil one” he is talking about powers that are acting only with the express permission of the Lord God. That is hard to understand, but it is the way the Bible speaks of such things throughout. The most stunning statement in these chapters is Job’s reaction to what has happened: the Lord gave and the Lord has taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord. Question: What does this tell us about Job’s view of God and his relationship to him – and therefore of what ours should be? Answer: Job had a deep sense of relationship with God that had not been shaken by the appalling external events. For those of us (Westerners in particular) who are encouraged to seek our own good before anything and everything else, thus doing things like divorcing a spouse who no longer seems best for us, this approach to our own gratification is a fundamentally important lesson. Question: Which nutrients do we need every single day? I would say that the top ones to be concerned about from a have-to-get-it-today perspective would be zinc and B12. And both of those have absorption caps that are fairly tight, but B12 is the number one concern. You want to pay decent attention to the zinc rule, and you do want to make sure that your B vitamins are getting in on most of those other B vitamins you could probably, as long as you're hitting the daily average on the weekly basis, that's good.If you would like to be part of the next live Ask Me Anything About Nutrition, sign up for the CMJ Masterpass, which includes access to these live Zoom sessions, a private discussion group, premium features on all my content, and hundreds of dollars of exclusive discounts. READ: James 4:13,14 NLT Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. We are constantly encouraged to plan for the future. Whether we are looking at our family, our housing, our holidays or our pensions we are under continual pressure to make good plans. I don’t think that James is telling his readers not to do any planning, but he does want to prick the bubble of their arrogance. They thought that their life was their possession and that they could do what they liked with it. Not so, says James. The first consideration should be to discover God’s will. This means that when we do our planning we should do it when we are on our knees in prayer. We should reflect that our lives are a gift from God and that our families, education, talents and possessions are all part of his gracious generosity to us. In prayer we need to seek his will for the future and so as we make our plans we need to hold them in humility before him. Seeking to know God’s will is our prime task in life, because God’s will is, by definition, the best possible future for us. God loves us perfectly and knows us much better than we know ourselves so discovering his will is as good as life can get. In my late teens I remember struggling with that. It seemed obvious to me that I needed to make some excellent plans for my life and then seek God’s blessing on what I had decided to do. It was a real struggle giving up my personal plans for life – but I’m so glad that I did. God understood me so much better than I did ... and still does. QUESTION: Which of your life plans do you need to commit afresh to God today? PRAYER: Thank you Lord that you love us so much that you always want the best for us. Help me to seek your will first of all in all that I do today. Amen.

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.Long before written communication there was the oral tradition whereby a community’s culture, history and traditions were passed down by word-of-mouth and thus preserved.Ray Bradbury’s classic novel Fahrenheit 451 - that being the temperature at which paper burns - certainly has a theme of book burning; but the deeper meaning is a warning coming to us from 1953 when Bradbury’s book was published. 70 years ago Bradbury was aware of the monopolizing effect of social media to transform future generations into a society with no genuine connections, no distinctive thoughts, and excessive reliance on technology.Over the decades Bradbury’s work has been praised for its defense of literature as necessary both to the humanity of individuals and to civilization. In the novel book-loving residents of a dystopia save literature by each memorizing a book.Question: Which book would you save by memorizing it? This is the place to thrive together. Rabbah: They need to be able to see the schach as it states “your generations should know”.2. Rabbi Zeira: A sukkah must provide shade, as it states “A sukkah by day to shade”.3. Rava: A temporary dwelling is only up until 20 amos. A sukkah must be temporary as it states “You should dwell in the sukkah”.SummaryThe Others did not accept the reasoning of Rabbah: The possuk is referring to the knowledge of future generations, it is not teaching that one must be able to see the schach. The Others did not accept the reasoning of Rabbi Zeira: The possuk is referring to the times of Moshiach, it is not teaching about the schach.Rabbi Zeira: The possuk could have compared the security of Moshiach’s times to the shade of a canopy. By comparing it to a sukkah, we learn an extra law about sukkos.(The challenge posed to Rabbi Zeira was very strong, and that’s why he was compelled to defend himself. The challenge on Rabbah’s logic was not as strong.)The Others did not accept the reasoning of Rava: based on Abayye’s challenge, that a sukkah built with iron walls is kosher.Question: Which of the three reasons accounts for the statement of Rabbi Yoshiya?Rabbi Yoshiya quoting Rav: The Chachomim agree to Rabbi Yehuda (1.1) that a high sukkah is kosher in a case where the walls go all the way up to the schach.Answer: This is in accordance with the explanation of Rabbah. Since the walls reach up to the schach, one’s eyes follow the walls and he will be reminded of the schach.Question: Which of the three reasons accounts for the statement of Rav Huna?Rav Huna quoting Rav: The Chachomim agree to Rabbi Yehuda (1.1) that a high sukkah is kosher in a case where the sukkah’s area is greater than 4x4 amos.Answer: This is in accordance with the explanation of Rabbi Zeira. Since it is wide the shade persists despite the elevation. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

TEXT:John 14:1-14 (NRSV)Jesus the Way to the Father14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And you know the way to the place where I am going.”5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. 12 Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.Acts 7:55-60 (NRSV)55 But filled with the Holy Spirit, he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 “Look,” he said, “I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” 57 But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. 58 Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he died.Question: Which step of the journey do you feel stuck on - identity, reparenting, martyrs, or honoring/celebrating yourself or others?PRAYER:When we try to do it all. Lord hear our prayer. When the toll of more innocent lives lost is too heavy to bear. Lord hear our prayer. When we feel trapped in the chaos of quarantine and uncertainty. Lord hear our prayer. When we feel like we don’t measure up as parents and leaders. Lord hear our prayer. When we don’t even know what questions to ask anymore. Lord hear our prayer. When we’re exhausted and have nothing left to give. Lord hear our prayer. When we can’t find energy to do the things that bring us joy. Lord hear our prayer. When we hold our family close, whether we can now or have to wait. Lord hear our prayer. When we don’t measure up to society’s definition of success. Lord hear our prayer. When it’s been hard to talk to God or find any grounding in our faith. Lord hear our prayer. We pray for peace, and for justice, and for comfort, and for warmth. We extend ourselves to recognize the sacred in another and the sacred in ourselves. May we not take ourselves too seriously this week in a world that feels like it may be struggling under the weight.LISTEN:God Our Mother - The LiturgistsLay It All Down - United PursuitHills and Valleys - Tauren WellsWATCH:The Many's Night of LamentationA Song for Ahmaud Arbery

Question: "Which brand and dosage of no-carb electrolytes would you take at night to optimize sleep, especially after sauna use?" I would drink a bottle of Gerolsteiner, and I would add to it 100 milligrams of any kind of magnesium: citrate, glycinate, malate, those three are fine. And I would add to it 400 milligrams of potassium citrate, or bicarbonate if it's an empty stomach. You say no-carb. Because of the potassium, I personally would take maybe like a teaspoon of honey with this. I would also take some salt. Let's say a half a teaspoon, to a teaspoon of salt with it. The caveat being if you’re sodium sensitive you should be mindful not to overdo it. If you know you don't have a problem with salt and blood pressure, then I would recommend adding the sodium to the mix. New Episode! On the heels of two wildly successful back-to-back events, Danielle and Ani talk about what it takes to pull off events of that magnitude, how to handle the pressures of life and business, and why they do what they do. In Big Money Stylist, we go over the following formula each month: Week #1: Power Week #2: Production Week #3: Profit Week #4: Protection In This Week’s Episode…..Power Point #1: Let Them Go If someone on your staff isn’t working out, don’t hold onto them. There’s never a good time to let someone go or to move on. But when all is said and done, sometimes it can actually work out to be perfect timing. Danielle: “Don’t be held hostage by your employees. This can also relate to relationships. If you feel like you’re in a place where you “need” one another, that’s not healthy for your relationship. QUESTION Where in your world do you know it’s time to let go of someone or something? Point #2: Visionaries & Implementors As a visionary, Danielle needs to know just enough information to steer the ship, while Ani and Katie, as implementors, are all about the details. Many salon owners take the stance of “I’m just going to focus on the art and the hair and not worry about the numbers,” which can be completely detrimental to their business. QUESTION Which one are you? A visionary or an implementor? Point #3: Help! null As business owners, you’ve got SO MUCH on your plate. It’s so easy to take on EVERYTHING. Even if you want help, it’s hard to let go and give some of the responsibility to others. When you experience shitty help, shitty help is worse than no help. It turns into babysitting, which requires more time and energy than it’s worth. You end up sacrificing more than you ever anticipated. QUESTION How can you relate to this? Point #4: Sinking Ship? Danielle: Sometimes there are areas of our life where the ship is sinking, and we think, “Oh, I’ve just gotta fight.” But if your ship has been sinking for quite some time, you’ve got to reevaluate. You’ve got to face the facts and the truth of your situation. You have to build yourself. Build YOU! The consequences of NOT building yourself has a trifecta effect. You won’t know the impact that you actually have the power to make on people unless you’re willing to take a look at yourself and build yourself QUESTION Where in your world is it time to face the truth & facts that you have been ignoring? Point #5: Do It Scared Ani: There’s always going to be pressure in your life. There are going to be moments in your life where you’ll think, “I don’t know if I can actually do this.” It comes down to a moment of decision for yourself. You might be scared shitless, thinking, “I’m not confident, and I’m not 100% certain I can do this! But you know what? Fuck it. I’m not just going to try; I’m going to give this EVERYTHING I have.” QUESTION How can you apply this to your life? Quote of the Week: “If I can figure out how to do this while still being a mom, having family time, having a career, and enjoying life, I want other people to experience this, too. That’s when I launched NBR.” —Danielle K White “It fucking wrecks you! It throws your life upside down and has you questioning everything you’ve ever done in the most beautiful way that you could NEVER imagine!” –Anianne Rivera
THE DIVINE COUNCIL worldview is clearly reflected in the ongoing discourse of Eliphaz the Temanite, as he mentions the "Holy Ones," an epithet used elsewhere in the Old Testament for the Watchers (Daniel 4:13, 17). We also discuss the hidden meaning of the “sparks” in Job 5:7, the bene resheph or “sons of Resheph,” and the significance of the Canaanite plague-god Resheph (hint: Resheph was called Apollo by the Greeks and Romans). Question: Which god did Eliphaz serve? Was he a pagan? We assume it was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but Job lived between the time of Noah and the birth of Abraham and God had not yet revealed His name to humanity. That happened hundreds of years later with Moses on Mount Sinai (Exodus 6:3). So, assuming Eliphaz served the same God as Job, he would probably have known Yahweh as El Shaddai, a theory supported by Eliphaz’ reference to “the Almighty” (shadday) in Job 5:17. We also discuss other nouns such as “affliction,” “trouble,” “injustice,” “destruction,” and “famine,” because those were often considered to be demonic entities in the ancient Near East. This is a great exercise in trying to get inside the head of someone who lived more than four thousand years ago on the other side of the world, although admittedly somewhat speculative. The takeaway: Eliphaz rebuked Job for blaming God for his troubles, which Eliphaz appears to think are Job’s fault for being insufficiently devout. Question: Which sales process works best? For professional services businesses, I hear many answers to this. Comments like: "We just want calls, we'll do the rest" "Get prospects to just find us, click over to our page, book their appointment, and just show up" "Build out our pages and process for us. You are the expert, show us the way"... There are variations of these. The point I'm trying to make, and that I'm sharing here today (Model A, B, C) from the chart - is that you MUST have a sales process that works for you. Download chart here: https://chaosmap.com/docs/one-sales-process-away.pdf And, that you can track everything (numbers) so you can improve it. (Plus, the willingness to do so - it's not always easy to change ways of operating... especially not with a staff or front-office that has been doing it "their way" for years!) And, with what "works" - what do I mean? Not beating around the bush here... it's this: Math & Metrics! Do you know your traffic costs, conversion points (%) through the customer journey and your Customer Lifetime Value (CLTV)? Good questions, more important are the answers (real data). Most businesses want to go positive on their ad spend right away. We like that... but the ROI and ultimate health of the business is measured differently. You have to look at the longer term and compare marketing investments to actual returns - over time. Let's talk about a few models today, and you can download the sheet above. -- Interested in getting personally coached by Jon to develop traffic, leads and sales? ➡️ Click here: https://chaosmap.com/talk If you liked this broadcast, please give it a thumbs up
Session 11 Today, we discuss a more straightforward, neuro-anatomy question about the glossopharyngeal nerve. As always, we’re joined by Dr. Andrea Paul of Board Vitals. If you’re in the market for QBanks and practice tests for the USMLE/COMLEX, check out Board Vitals. Use the promo code BOARDROUNDS to save 15% on your purchase. [02:00] Question Which of the glands of the options below are innervated by the efferent autonomic fibers of the glossopharyngeal nerve? [02:14] Answer Choices You have to know what the glossopharyngeal nerve and what type of fibers are innervating the glands. Answer choices: (A) Nasal (B) Submandibular (C) Sublingual (D) Parotid (E) Lacrimal [02:45] Thought Process in Answering the Question Glosso refers to the tongue and pharyngeal refers to the pharynx area. So this is somewhere around the mouth. The interesting with glossopharyngeal is that it has a range of effects. Some of the places it touches would surprise you. But first, you can eliminate nasal. But the rest of the choices could be fair game. This specific nerve has a lot of sensory – parasympathetic and motor functions. It's tough to answer so this can be challenging to people. This nerve starts at the medulla and coming out of the jugular foramen. It's traveling through both anteriorly and posteriorly. So it has a branch that goes to the inner ear. Lacrimal refers to the tear ducts so you can get rid of this one too. Now, we're down with three choices. [06:55] Choosing Among the Three First, remember the motor functions. So it's innervating the muscle in the pharynx and then you think through the sensory functions. Glossopharyngeal is sensory to the posterior third of the tongue or the back half of the tongue. If you can remember that section of the tongue, it leads you closer to the location of the gland that may be in that area. It's also going up into the middle ear, the Eustachian tube for sensory function. Anatomically, you start to think more up anterior than sublingual. Think of it as more of in the ear area. So the correct answer here is the Parotid gland, which is the only gland that doesn't receive any autonomic innervations from the facial nerve. So it receives that from the glossopharyngeal nerve. This is the main differentiator. Hence, the exam likes to ask about it. The posterior third of the tongue and the middle ear are things they love to ask about glossopharyngeal. Also, know which muscles are innervated, which is the stylopharyngeus in the pharynx. Also, try to remember the path and the branches. It sends a branch up to the middle ear. There are five other branches. One goes to the stylopharyngeus muscle, one is the pharyngeal branch, one is tonsilar, one is sublingual, and then one goes to the parotid body and sinus. You can draw this to help give you a visualization. Afferent refers to the sensory nerves coming back towards the central nervous system and efferent refers to "going away" for motor function. In terms of understanding parasympathetic vs sympathetic, just remember that most glandular effects are parasympathetic just like most of your organs. Psalm 145:13 NLT 'For your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. You rule throughout all generations.' Whenever I consider eternity, I’m challenged by the writer Susan Ertz’s quote that many people long for eternity, when they don’t know what to do on a wet afternoon. It is remarkable how quickly I used to get bored. The path of pursuing a contemplative life that I entered upon while caring for my first wife, Katey, has, by many a twist and turn, brought me into a space in which I cannot remember when last I experienced feelings of boredom. I’m no super-saint, but time is now my friend and no longer something with which I struggle, unless entertained or distracted. The great thing about God’s forever kingdom is that it expresses its partial shape here in the earth. We enter that wonderful, life-giving kingdom upon yielding to Jesus, and then navigate mortality’s many challenges with the kingdom both present and ahead of us. This places great emphasis on the choices I make. I’ve learned I can live my life three ways and only one proves satisfactory, keeping me in God’s immediate presence. The first only requires me to serve the letter of the Christian law: church attendance and affirming biblical truths while I live my life. There is always a shadow of deceit, of self and others, as I refuse to live out an authentic faith born of my personal battles. A second, and more honest, approach is to let life happen and spend my time reacting to my circumstances. This is exhausting and only ever reveals the worst aspects of my character. This is because I am reacting from my own sentiments created by my situation. These may feel like my true feelings, but are in fact no more than my preferences in reaction to what I don’t like. Finally, I can acknowledge my immediate reaction without choosing to express it. Here I might pause and review the landscape I’m entering into and take a moment to discover Jesus in this moment. Simply Jesus as Jesus is, and not as I might like Jesus to appear. QUESTION: Which of the three ways of living is closest to how you live? PRAYER: Lord Jesus, may your kingdom come and your will be done.
Posh Spice, Victoria Beckhams, Vicky Adams... today we take a quote from her former music school principal: If Victoria hadn't had the lucky breaks she had and the people having faithin her to make her what she is, she probably would have been singing anddancing on a cruise liner. Summary Socialism in much in the news. At first glance, it might sound appealing. Needs driven by inequality will be erased. Everyone gets what they want, and no one is the worse for it. How does socialism stand up to a deeper dive into what it is and how it works? For the next 10 minutes, we will unpack those two questions: 1. What is socialism? and 2. How does it work? Transcript Socialism in much in the news. Firsts, let’s first pause for a mutual goal check. I am assuming that we are all looking for an economic system that simultaneously rewards talent and hard work, while taking care of those who truly need it. Do you agree? (I realize this is thumbnail summary.) Now, let’s start with some key observations: Capitalism is the greatest wealth-producing engine the world has ever seen. Some may doubt its fairness, but no one doubts its ability to create wealth on a massive scale. All societies redistribute wealth. Everyone of them. Example. If all a particular society did was to tax enough to provide roads, some would pay more for those roads than others. Most people are likely to use the roads disproportionately to their tax contribution. Some more, some less; that’s an example of redistribution. The question is not whether to redistribute wealth, but what is the proper level of redistribution. Okay, let’s add some definitions: Democratic Socialism: I believe that Senator Sanders and others are talking about something other than the traditional definition of socialism. They are not talking about the government owning the means of production. They are not talking about the government owning and/or controlling entities like Ford and Facebook. Not yet, anyway. However, Senator Warren and Representative Ocasio-Cortez are beginning to introduce those thoughts. Democratic socialists are talking about massive income and wealth redistribution. Even more than we have now. The Scandinavian countries are an example of democratic socialism. Their version of socialism is capitalism with heavy income redistribution. Traditional Socialism. See above, democratic socialism, with the addition of the government owning entities like Ford, Facebook and most everything else of size. You can keep your ice cream store if you have one. See Venezuela, Cuba and others. Communism: Traditional socialism with the addition of prohibiting any private property. Capitalism: A system wherein people, individuals or groups, including corporations, own the means of production and engage in voluntary exchanges of money for goods and services. Profit: Selling things, taking in income, for more than it costs to make them, drives everything; capitalism, democratic socialism, traditional socialism, communism, no matter what the system is. Here we are not talking about taxes or what you do with taxes; we are talking about how you make the money and wealth that is taxed in the first place. You have to create wealth before you can redistribute it. The gozindas have to exceed the gozoutas or nothing works in any system. Question: Which economic method or principle, either type of socialism, communism or capitalism, is the best approach to making and selling products and services for more than they cost? Answer: Capitalism. Absolutely no question. Remember, democratic socialism is successful capitalism, capitalism with profits, with heavy income redistribution. Without profit there is nothing to tax, and nothing to redistribute. Capitalism is amoral, not immoral, mind you, amoral. It needs a moral compass. Democracy needs a moral compass. Any system,
Summary Economic Definitions? Really? How could that be important, or even not crashingly boring? In a world where we are seeing headlines that appear--appear--to advertise the clash between socialism and capitalism, we need to have at least basic definitions of those deeply misunderstood terms. And we are seeing more people and organizations wanting to abolish profit. Try these thoughts on for size: 1. Capitalism is necessary for democratic socialism to have anything to redistribute and 2. Profit is necessary to make any economic system’s engine run. How are money and wealth created? All individuals and societies need both. Individuals and private groups must generate profits in order to make money and create wealth. Governments tax that money and wealth. How could they be important, or even not crashingly boring? In a world where we are seeing headlines that appear--appear, mind you--to advertise the clash between socialism and capitalism, we need to understand at least the basic definitions of those deeply misunderstood terms. And at the same time we are seeing more people and organizations wanting to abolish profit. The exceptions are communist governments and governments that use the classic definition of socialism. And we’ll get to that. In both types, the government owns the means of productions. But no matter who owns what, the enterprise producing the goods and services that a society consumes must take in more money that it costs to produce those items and services. That’s called a profit. Here are the key definitions: Democratic Socialism: I believe that Senator Sanders and others are talking about something other than the traditional definition of socialism. They are not talking about the government owning the means of production. They are not talking about the government owning entities like Ford and Facebook. Not yet, anyway. Genesis 32:24 NLT 'This left Jacob all alone in the camp.' Fear is isolating. Jacob finds himself alone and must face his inner fears. Fear is isolating because we experience the weight of our nightmare and no one can live in our shoes. While others may empathise and we sense their love and support, fear is my own battle and one I must navigate very personally. There is the fear in confronting its source as well as the harsh reality that there are no alternative options left to me. I can, of course, create diversions in an attempt to avoid my deepest fears. Yet a diversion is only ever a delay, a postponement, in facing an unavoidable reality. God’s intention is always that I grow through my fears, for maturity is born walking on the path of my own foreboding. Fear robs me of my inner peace. It consumes every ounce of my thinking capacity. It crushes my emotions. In fact, it dominates my skyline so that I can see nothing other than my fear and my own imagined outcomes. Fear diminishes me as a person and forces my hand into making choices that I grow to regret because they are framed around the fear itself. Childhood experience with dentists convinced me that as an adult avoiding dentists was the best way to manage my fear. However, 16 years of avoidance merely ensured that I had to return, fear increased and well-established, and endure complex and painful dental work to pay for my failing dental hygiene. I discovered that my fears were related to a bad dentist and I had made a resolution based on a partial truth. Yes, there are bad dentists, but not all dentists are bad. Here we discover one aspect of our uniqueness in God. While there are many commonalities in our journey with God, God has a unique road for each of us to tread. God’s purpose is that our friendship with the divine grows and that my unique fractures are addressed in ways only God understands. There are no generic solutions to Christian discipleship, only bespoke ones. QUESTION: Which fears is God wanting to confront in you? PRAYER: Lord, you said so often to not be afraid; help me to place my hope in you.

Cash is the oxygen that lets your business breathe. And just like oxygen, when there is none available it's all you can think about because you need it to survive. Sometimes your business just needs a fast infusion of cash, and today I'll show you 3 ways to get cash quick. Best of all, they are legal, moral, and ethical! Tip Of the Week I have a new friend, and I love him. His name is Edgar. Let me explain. Most of our social media updates go to waste. They’re only seen by a fraction of our total audience, falling victim to things like time of day, mysterious algorithms and other factors that are beyond our control. Fewer and fewer people see our social media updates. To keep up, we’re forced to publish more frequently, just to stay engaged with our audiences. This can make social media marketing a real burden, one that grows heavier each day… and one that offers diminishing returns. Edgar to the rescue! No longer do you publish your updates just once and then watch them sink beneath the waves of obscurity, missed by most and forgotten by all (even you) within hours of publication. Edgar catalogs your social updates into a library that grows over time. You curate the library, and Edgar republishes those updates on a schedule you set. He publishes only what you want, and only when you want it done. What happens once Edgar publishes all of the updates in a category (like “My Blog Posts,” for instance)? He just pulls more updates from your library. You can handcraft each update and even write several fresh updates that point to the same resource, blog post or podcast episode. Your social media posts don’t go to waste. Your “old” posts can become new again. And you have time to catch up on the latest episodes of The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. You can read a whole stack of 44 cool Social Media Marketing tips like this in this article at Social Media Examiner. Spiritual Foundations The Bible says that where sin abounds, grace abounds much more. (Romans 5:20) But grace is about more than the forgiveness of sins. Check this out: “And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.” Luke 2:40 Jesus did not sin. (2 Corinthians 5:21) So why and how was God’s grace was upon Jesus? There must be some way a human can abound in God’s grace even when he has not sinned. The word “grace” is first mentioned in the Bible in Genesis 6:8, which says that “Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord”. Noah’s name means “rest”. So the verse is literally saying that rest found grace. Grace was upon Jesus because He lived a life of rest, and trust in His Father. He said, “The Son can do nothing of Himself. He can do only what He sees His Father doing.” (John 5:19) Grace comes upon us when we rest and trust God. But what if nothing happens? Honestly, if after you have given the matter to Jesus and nothing happens, what can you do? If Jesus Himself can’t do anything about it, do you think you can? But here's the truth: once the problem is handed over to Jesus, He can and will do a perfect work of taking care of it for you! So live a life of rest. Have this attitude and tell the Lord, “I just rest in You Lord and I trust You.” Feature Presentation: The Fastest Path to Cash Sometimes your business just needs a fast infusion of cash, and today I'll show you 3 ways to get cash quick. You do not respect the mission and/or the people You have no trust in the leadership Be Careful!! We often want to blame the company and the people for our unhappiness at work. However, I have found that you are usually the problem. (Sounds harsh, but I have been there and looking back, it was all me). How can you tell? If there are people in your company who seem to love their job, then it might be you. That is OK, maybe you are in the wrong place. But QUIT running around blaming them. Take responsibility for your career and your job and make the needed changes. Two Options to Find Happiness at Work Take Control. I have worked with many clients who took personal responsibility and got control and influence through focusing on their Company of One. (The Company of One model is covered in detail in the book Resumes are Worthless.) Prepare to leave. Do not just quit and run to another job, but take the time to find what you want to do. I have walked more people than I can count through this process. First, start with your calling and identify things you might like. (See below) Then, go out and network. Calling is the Key Before writing about this topic, I searched it to see what others have written. But, I found a lot of people instead who were writing about how to be happy at work. I totally agree. You have to take charge and be happy where you are today. But, if you are doing the wrong job for you, you need to start the search for the right fit. A great way to start the calling process is to do the brainstorming exercise. Download a FREE copy of my ebook on How To Find Your Calling below. What Do You Need? We are busy. Too busy, it seems; if I ask ten friends what their biggest challenge is, five will answer with some variation of, “I'm just too busy.” In this episode I will share 10 specific tactics to help un-busy yourself. Tip of the Week: My favorite new meeting tool is Zoom.us. I like it better than Skype or GoToMeeting for the following reasons: Smoother video streaming. Ease of use. Simple screen sharing. Easy recordings. Less expensive than other alternatives. Spiritual Foundations: Should we be working harder to be better Christians? No. All our “working” and striving will only make us feel guiltier and dirtier than before we started. …you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” 1 Cor 1:30 Your righteousness is not measured by what you do or don't do; it is measured by what Jesus already did. Feature Presentation: Ten Ways To Un-Busy Yourself This Week We are too busy. We need to slow down, so we can get more meaningful work done. Here are 10 specific tactics to help un-busy yourself. Start work an hour later. Quit work an hour earlier. Don't take any lunch meetings. Work four days instead of five this week. Don't take any incoming phone calls. Eliminate all shopping (online and offline). Stop watching TV, listening to the radio, and reading the newspaper. Meditate twice a day. Cancel all recurring meetings. Cancel all social and volunteer activities. Even picking a few of these ten will free up space in your mind, help you get more centered, and perhaps bring you a renewed sense of peace, power, and purpose. Question: Which game should you be playing right now, Skyrim or Zelda: Skyward Sword? Answer: Yes. Honestly, that's all you need to know, but the 8-4 crew prattles on anyway in a spoiler-free discussion of the glorious highs and bowel-quaking lows (OK, more like the minor annoyances) of two of this year's best games, then chit-chat (read: rage) about Sony's PSP UMD-to-Vita transfer program, rumors about the next Xbox, and online buzz on the future of Metal Gear in news.
