Josephine Baker...Josi Bakes as we've taken to calling her, respectfully. Fizzing with energy, talent, and pure GUMPTION. The only African American woman to be inducted in the Pantheon of France. Her story takes us from the poverty and violence of segregated St. Louis, to the scandalously modern revues of interwar Europe. Beloved in Berlin, but finding herself most at home in Paris, she would tirelessly work for the French resistance during the Second World War, only to return to rejection and racial prejudice in the united states, until being one of only 2 women to speak at the 1963 March on Washington. All that whilst being what seems to be a genuine delight. Chelsea and comedian Tocarra Mallard dive into Josephine Baker's newly translated memoir, “Fearless and Free.” They explore how she danced her way to global stardom, secretly worked as a WWII spy for the French Resistance (yes, she smuggled German secrets on sheet music), and built a legacy as groundbreaking as it was complicated. Plus, a deep dive into her controversial Rainbow Tribe and the memoir's wildest moments—including a psychic rabbit's foot and some truly questionable recipes. This week, we'll delve into the mind blowing life of Josephine Baker, a Black performing artist who took Paris by storm starting in the 1920s. She sang, she danced, she barely wore any clothing, and she had a pet cheetah named Chiquita that regularly terrorized the orchestra pit. But Josephine Baker was so much more than that. from St. Louis street rat to world famous performer, first Black female movie star to French spy during World War II, entrepreneur to US civil rights activist, mother of twelve… I think you will find that Josephine Baker is nothing if not completely unexpected. This week, Sara Gorsky brings us the incredible true story of Josephine Baker! Born into poverty in St. Louis, Missouri in 1906, Josephine works her way up the chorus line to NYC, but the discrimination she faces at every turn drives her to Europe where France falls in love with the girl in the banana skirt. Her rise to fame is meteoric and she becomes one of the highest paid performers in all of Europe and the first Black woman in history to reach such astounding celebrity status. However, she does not stop there. Her accomplishments include incredible work as a spy for the French Resistance in WWII, adopting a "Rainbow Tribe" of children, forcing the desegregation of notorious nightclubs around the country and marching & speaking alongside Dr. MLK, Jr. at the March on Washington. If you haven't heard of this woman whom Earnest Hemingway called “the most sensational woman anyone ever saw,” then this is the episode for you! — A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules. Today on the Podcast, Stauney introduces us to Josephine Baker. Often referred to as "The Black Venus" or "The Black Pearl" she was a Paris showgirl with a shocking routine that took the world by storm (often joined on stage by her pet cheetah Chiquita). She also was an accomplished actress (the first black woman to star in a major motion picture), a singer, and a American Civil Rights activist, speaking and marching alongside Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. She also was well-known for her adopted children, a large crowd of 12+ kids from different countries and cultures across the world, called "The Rainbow Tribe." Add in a close personal relationship with Princess Grace Kelly and so much more, and she is truly a collective of a million accomplishments and abilities that surpass all expectations. When Jari Hannu Bouillon was growing up, his mother was one of the most famous women in the world. Josephine Baker had shot to fame in the 1920s in Paris as a dancer, singer and actress. She also worked as a spy during the Second World War and was a fierce civil rights activist. By the 1950s she was living in a 15th-century castle in France with her 12 adopted children. They were from all over the world and meant to be a symbol of racial harmony and 'true brotherhood'. But, eventually, Josephine Baker couldn't sustain her expenses and she was evicted from the chateau. Luckily a friend, Princess Grace of Monaco, helped her find a new place to live. Jari didn't stay there for long. When Josephine found out he was gay, she held a family vote and it was decided that he should be sent to Argentina to live with his father. Jari was able to reconcile with his mother before her death in 1975. Many years later he was contacted by a journalist who said his Finnish birth family was looking for him. Professor Matthew Pratt Guterl wrote a book called Josephine Baker and the Rainbow Tribe about the family. He was interested in the story because he is an academic who teaches Africana Studies and American Studies, but also because he has a personal connection to the story. Matthew grew up in a large multiracial adoptive family too. In the 1920s a young dancer from the US took Paris by storm. Her name was Josephine Baker and she was known for her risqué performances, most famously when she danced while wearing a skirt made of bananas. She became a singer, actress and a superstar. As a black woman born in the early 20th century in the United States, Josephine lived through racial segregation. France allowed her more opportunities and freedoms, so Josephine took French citizenship. Her allegiance to her new country was so strong she even worked as a spy during the Second World War for the French Resistance. Throughout her life she fought for civil rights, insisting on performing to integrated audiences, protesting against venues with racist policies and speaking at the historic March on Washington. By the 1950s she had taken on another role: as a mother. Josephine Baker adopted 12 children from around the world. Jari Hannu Bouillon was born in Finland, but grew up with his adoptive siblings in the French countryside in Josephine's 15th-century castle. He had extraordinary experiences as a child: meeting presidents, royalty and revolutionaries. He tells Outlook what it was like to be the son of a megastar. Shannon Louise Ashton was a pioneer for same-sex women who always wanted children but found out along the way she had no desire to be with a man so had to think outside the box. She started her motherhood journey via the QFG in the early 2000s at a time when it was all very taboo. Almost 2 decades on a couple of relationships along the way, she has fulfilled her rainbow tribe of 5 children using the popular choice Surfer donor known as id number 188. On record, there are 48 children, many still unknown and unaccounted for, with some surprise unexpected encounters across the way like coincidentally one of her children going to the same daycare as another donor sibling. With her oldest child Zac about to reach his adult years, we discuss how they plan to navigate this and the prep talks required. Shannon has quite the positive outlook in life, but she has had to deal with a few dramas along the way firstly them being given the wrong donor they had asked for, having to join the donor sibling registry and DNA sites in order to find more of her children's half-siblings and then there are the questions from her children about their donor and wanting to meet him and her having to explain that this is unlikely to happen with the donor, they ended up getting. In her own words “sometimes what's meant to happen just happens”. There were many American expats filling the streets of Paris in the 1920's but there was one that did it with an extra panash and made an immediate impression. Josephine Baker was a woman ahead of her time and blazed her own path from the streets of St Louis to the stages of Paris.Josephine Baker grew up on the streets of St Louis dancing for spare change before at the age of 15 she head to New York and became the highest paid chorus girl in Vaudeville. Shortly after she headed to Paris and was an immediate success on the stage of the Theatre Champs Elysees making a mark with her exotic moves and costumes. She would go onto become a member of the Resistance, entertain the troops and adopt 12 children from around the world creating her own family, her “Rainbow Tribe”. Ilana Navaro’s eye-opening new documentary Josephine Baker: The Story of An Awakening, illuminates the life of iconic artist and human rights activist Josephine Baker, the first global black superstar. World renowned performer, World War II spy, and activist are a few of the titles used to describe Josephine Baker, one of the most successful African American performers in French history. Josephine Baker: The Story of An Awakening follows Baker from being a poor little black girl from Missouri to becoming the Queen of Paris, before joining the French Resistance and finally creating her dream family “The Rainbow Tribe”, adopting twelve children from the four corners of the world. The film reveals rare and previously unseen archives that will resolve the puzzle of Josephine’s fascinating fifty-year-long “headline grabbing career.” Josephine Baker made three trips “back home” (1936, 1948, 1951), and each time she experienced everyday racism, despite her worldwide fame. Each tragic experience triggered her life-changing decisions. Gradually the battle for Civil Rights became her own, up until 1963, when she was the only woman who spoke on stage besides Martin Luther King during the famous March in Washington. Director Ilana Navaro (La Case de l’Oncle Doc, Toutes Les Télés Du Monde) stops by to talk about how a pervasive racist American society galvanized Josephine Baker’s determination to transcend the “banana dancer” sobriquet on her way to international recognition as a performer and civil rights warrior. As we move on from fighting Nazis in the 40's, we head into life with The Rainbow Tribe aka her 12 children , being asked to be the head/ face of the civil rights movement after Dr. MLK Jr was murdered, and her epic funerals (there were three, one included a 21 gun salute!) In this 3D Paradigm much is coming to the surface to be healed. One aspect is the various schisms and divides that have been created across the globe. One of the most insidious is racism and all its associated prejudices, judgements and toxic conversations and projections. Recent orchestrated events in the US have brought this issue to the surface to be witnessed and healed. This meditation is designed to create a healing wave for the USA and then the planet. The soul has no race, the soul has incarnated in many races and in bodies that we would not readily recognise. As we move through the ascension process many are recognising that they have lived many lifetimes and have experienced life through different eyes and mindsets. When we recognise our multidimensional nature, it becomes impossible to hold ‘negative’ judgements about other and difference.

This week, we dive into Josephine Baker’s grand plan. And for all you listeners in Austin, we are going to be at SXSW Monday, March 12! The people demanded, we complied. Welcome to the second part of Josephine Baker. Jessica picks right back up at the start of WWII and delves into Josephine's spy work, civil rights activism, Rainbow Tribe, and propensity for alliterative names. Savannah learns you can't always rely on a thesaurus. We Eiffel Tower France.

Tea tidings with the Teafaerie at MAPS Psychedelic Science 2013 conference. Who IS the Teafaerie, and how does she manifest the psychedelic dream? The Teafaerie has been an avid entheogenic explorer her entire adult life and she has served as ground control for well over 100 trips. A real-life superheroine, we discuss the burgeoning meme of superhumanity, the Ultraculture, and the roots of this post-human possibility in the conscious festival scene and psychedelic culture worldwide. Teafaerie writes for Erowid on all aspects of psychedelics and virtuality, and her Western take on the shamanic realms from a data-information space is a valuable signpost in the cultural cosmovisions. Discover the secrets of 420, and the Teafaerie's secret origin in the Rainbow Tribe, Philip K Dick is channeled, and the seed dream of the Jedi Temple, a training academy in the shamanic arts is explored in this gonzo interview with experiential journalist Rak Razam. (aka the last 2012 panel discussion ever!) photo: Adam Taylor The Hopi Indian myths tell of a final age of Mankind, where a RAINBOW TRIBE shall appear of all peoples, all colors as one. The Mayans have their cosmogenesis telling of the shift coming in 2012, when the the Fifth World is born, even Australian Aborigines have their DREAMTIME mythos. Ethnobotanist and philosopher Terence McKenna helped fuel the idea of Dec 21st, 2012 as a 'Strange Attractor at the End of Time'... And here we all are, the latest in a long line of youth cultures affected by our relationship with the Earth and the deeper, Gaian consciousness that birthed us... Is Global Trance Culture a bridge between previous youth movements and something even older peaking in waves throughout His-story? What can we do to sacralize our dance, to empower our hearts, and to connect with these potent times to make a difference? Are we the ones we've been waiting for…? Join experiential journalist Rak Razam on this provocative tribal discussion panel held Thursday 15th Nov, 2011 at the Eclipse 2012 Festival in Far North Queensland, Australia, with guest speakers Even Dawn, Mark Heley, Chiara Beclu, Maha Lakshmi Grace and Charles Shaw.
