Renowned actress Grace Byers embraced her leading role in the hit summer comedy horror, The Blackening. “Allison” – an outspoken, no-nonsense character from the film – was very proud of her Black heritage; that role has served as a replicate of who she's become as a proud Black woman of empowerment. Her children's books, “I Am Enough,” and “I Believe I Can,” remained on the New York Times best-sellers list for months. But for a long time, Byers, who was raised in a multicultural household, struggled with her own sense of identity and the pressures of society trying to define her. Stay tuned as host Eddie Robinson chats unguarded with acclaimed actress and celebrated author, Grace Byers. The new mom shares with I SEE U the challenges of navigating through her journey of being both Black and white; being Caymanian and American; and being of the deaf and hearing cultures. Byers also offers up an intriguing look at how her recent birth has admittedly overwhelmed her mentally and physically – providing moments of candid reflection as she comes to grips with her health all while showing a vulnerable ‘grace' under pressure.

Welcome to my last episode of the year, beautiful people! I know this may be disappointing for some of you but your girl needs to fill her cup. Throughout these first two seasons, I've talked to countless women about the power of the pause but if I'm honest, I haven't taken one for myself and it's time. I don't have an exact return date but when I do come back to the mic the timing will be divine, so I thank you all for listening, for sharing, and being a part of this community of Black women founders, creators, and innovators. This week's episode we are discussing a variety of different topics including the death of Queen Elizabeth II; the longest living monarch in British history. We are not only planning to discuss her death as well as her life, but we also plan to talk about and discuss the idolization of the Royal Family, as well as the colonization of the British Empire. Two vey important aspects of the British Empire that everybody is not willing to talk about. We also plan to discuss what's happening in the state of Georgia with two very interesting political races that has some very powerful ramifications for either the Democratic or Republican Party. We are talking Stacey Abrams, Sen. Raphael Warnock, Hershel Walker and Gov. Brian Kemp and how these politicians can ultimately influence Georgia politics for the future. And, finally we will be talking about the new "Little Mermaid" Disney live action movie featuring Black Actress and Songstress Halle Bailey, and the backlash and racist implications that is surrounding the selection of this young African American Actress. Three very interesting topics that are definitely worthy of discussion. PLUS, we have a dynamic and thought-provoking Thought of the Week aptly titled "God Save The World," which is directly aligned with the theme of this week's episode. A compelling Thought of the Week that speaks to the real answer for the world today, and one that we cannot for you to hear in this week's edition of the podcast. If you're a fan of Schitt's Creek, The Handmaids Tale, The Saw III, The Saw IV, Rember, PawPortal, Killjoys, The Tuxedo, Degrassi: The Next Generation and Working Moms, you'll instantly recognize the very bold, beautiful, and talented Canadian Actress Kim Roberts, winner of The Vaughan International Film Festival 2022 Independent Leadership Award. She's one of the hardest and longest working Canadian Black actresses in Canada with an extensive list of impressive and diverse roles. Kim was also the first Black Actress to receive a speaking part in a commercial in Canada in the 1990's. Yes, that's how long it took! Because sadly, when Black actors and actresses make headlines, it's not always treated well. Such as with the announcement of Ncuti Gatwa as the 14th Doctor in Doctor Who, the first Black doctor; Moses Ingram receiving abuse, forcing Star Wars co star Ewan McGregor to defend her; and Steve Toussaint being forced to defend his appearance on Game of Thrones for being a Black character in a house that is seemingly only allowed to be white. Kim and other Black actors' achievements should be lauded, not treated as a surprise that they were able to do it because they were Black. Janette caught up with Kim at The Vaughan International Film Festival Gala awards to talk about her big win, her illustrious career with its highs & lows, reversing Roe vs. Wade, and what's next for her. Actress Nadia Sine met with me over Zoom in the Stay-at-home social distancing of 2020 to talk with me about being a black actress in the predominantly white theatre industry. I saw her performance as Juliet in Sonder Immersive’s production of “Through Yonder Window,” and was captivated by the production and her performance. What Nadia and I sat down to discuss primarily was a topic that has recently risen to the top of the theatre industry conversation--the racism encountered by performers of color in theatre. There are fantastic resources and discussions on this topic in lots of corners of the public conversation, some of my favorites are listed below in the show notes. But like everything I’m interested in, I really wanted to have this conversation, one-on-one to help me process as I look at what I can do and should do and will do about institutional racism in my own theatre community.Show Notes:Cultivating Change: Diversity and Inclusion in Utah Theatre at OPPADeena And Javen at the Regent Street! Paula Pizzi-Black | Actress, WriterPaula Pizzi-Black is an actress, writer, translator and sometimes director. She was born and raised in Buenos Aires where she began in children’s theatre and quickly learned if you fake it you are toast. So she studied acting with Lito Cruz, milked her long hair in shampoo commercials, modeled all kinds of jeans, and played bratty teens in episodics and in a rather questionable soap. After college, she came to the US, fell in love with NYC and never looked back. And the training continued. First at Lee Strasberg’s Theatre Institute, then at the Actors Conservatory and last but not least at William Esper Studio. She became a member of Circle Rep Lab (which is now New Circle Theatre Company) and LAByrinth (formerly Latino Actors Base) which have become her artistic family. It was at LAByrinth where she started directing and writing and where she now has the honor of leading the Education Department. Paula has been part of some amazing new plays and artistic projects during which she met and collaborated with incredible artists and better yet, humans. She’s also an ensemble member of Barefoot Theatre Company and the Playwrights Directors Unit at the Actors Studio (P.D.U.)
In episode 2 I interview Brisbane based artist Emma Black. Emma is an actor, director and co-founder of Sharehouse Theatre Company. We also discuss the role of politics in art versus entertainment for entertainment's sake. Episode 2 is an interview, based around the experiences of an artist who graduated and been within the industry for a few years but hasn't had long enough to complete ground their career. Emma is such an amazing, kind-hearted person and I can't wait for you to hear her passions and ideas or this industry.
