We hope this 'sode finds you in the company of loved ones, good friends, and even better records. For this latest trip around the turntable, we have an off-cycle pod from the SURFACE NOISE crew walking through our picks (and misses) for the 2025 Record Store Day Black Friday releases dropping on Friday, November 28th. First spin is our "top" choices - the titles that piqued our interest enough to motivate us to go out to our locals to procure these tasty nuggets of vinyl goodness. Next round features our "accordion" picks: the choices that we will likely talk ourselves into over the course of waiting in line or further ponderance before the day. And fittingly we end with the "toilet bowl" selections - the titles so bad, so stinky, that there is only really one place they belong to be (not clogging valuable real estate in our stores' bins). Plus, a special returning friend of the show and SURFACE NOISE alum stops by to say hello and throw some vinyl goodies our way. So much vinyl nonsense, so little time. "I don't think people think of us when they think of emo. Probably we covered 'Mamma Mia' by ABBA today. That was emo. Yeah."Join the "Meeting of the Brians" as we sit down with Brian Logan Dales of The Summer Set right after their set at the When We Were Young festival. Despite playing an acoustic show in Tucson and driving through the night to make it, Dales brings his trademark high energy. We discuss the band's sometimes-contested place in emo history, with Brian admitting they see themselves as an attitude-driven pop-rock band with "one foot in, one foot out." He gives a look behind the scenes of their latest album, Meet Me In The Record Store, a passion project five years in the making that they treated like their "first album all over again". This latest work reflects what The Summer Set sounds like as an adult band, writing about everything from girls to existential crises. Dales talks about the process of letting the songs "fine wine" as demos for years , and how they balanced the setlist at the nostalgia festival between fan-favorite older songs and the new material. Find out which song Dales played on an overnight drive, and hear about the time he mistakenly played a Puddle of Mudd cover at Emo Nitet. We get to some new stereo sounds in the pedalboard and even a short lesson on outlining dominant chords in today's episode… But first, in a music industry dominated by the internet, streaming, social media, and ten-second clips, I'm trying something a little different.I've always had the red light on when I'm playing live. I've recorded hundreds of shows over the past two decades, many of them as a bandleader performing my own music. Now, I'm sharing them in a new project I'm calling The Record Store. I get so many emails asking why I'm not on Bandcamp or where people can buy my music because they don't use streaming services—and this is my answer. All the live shows from the past, every studio album, and as many new live recordings as I can add in the future will be available for download in one place: The Record Store. As I mention in today's episode, if just 1% of this channel's subscribers bought one album, it would fund one—possibly even two—new studio albums within the next 12 months. So, as I continue my quest to write, record, and release as much music as possible while I'm still here, I hope this project will help fuel the creative side of my career and make it possible to bring you new music on a regular basis.More soon, Janek Get full access to Janek's Newsletter at janekgwizdala.substack.com/subscribe

This week in the After Party, we're digging up the stories they didn't want told. Jake throws back to a formative encounter with a record store burnout who unknowingly set him on the path to Disgraceland. Jake talks AC/DC, Bon Scott, and the rock and roll myths that shaped him (and you)—and tees up a deeper dive in the bonus section into some of the most suspicious musician deaths of all time. From Elliott Smith's stab wounds to Al Jackson Jr.'s unsolved murder, these are stories too sketchy, too unresolved, and too raw for the wide feed. If you've ever felt like the real stories got buried—or that culture doesn't reflect what you care about anymore—this episode is for you. Because we don't need CASSM to tell our stories. We're telling them ourselves. Right here in Disgraceland. Unlock the exclusive bonus, ad-free episodes, and a deeper look at the music myths they tried to silence—at disgracelandpod.com/membership. On Tuesday, we're bringing you an episode on Motorhead, who made a big impression on Jake when he saw them in concert as a youngster. Jake wants to know: What was your first life-changing concert experience? Share your thoughts at 617-906-6638, disgracelandpod@gmail.com, or on socials @disgracelandpod. Reviving vinyl in the digital age sounded impossible until the creation of Record Store Day changed everything.Launched with Metallica at a San Francisco record shop in 2008, it became a global celebration of indie music culture and a blueprint for building real human connections. In this episode, we drop the needle on what marketers can learn from vinyl's resurgence with special guest Robert McCauley, Sr. Director of Content Marketing at Upwork.Together, we explore what B2B marketers can learn from community-driven events, the power of exclusivity, and how to build content strategies that truly resonate.About our guest, Robert McCauleyRobert has 20+ years of experience in content marketing, editorial, and communications. At Upwork, he leads a team of more than two dozen amazing content marketers, customer marketers, and multimedia professionals. (In fact, you can find out more about how awesome they are by checking out this link: https://bit.ly/3PGXNcD.) Robert lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and their high-octane fourth-grader. Ask him about his vinyl collection if you're looking to waste an hour or two. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Record Store Day:Sell the experience, not just the product. Exclusivity and differentiation aren't just nice-to-haves; they're why people line up on Record Store Day. As Robert puts it, “Part of the reason that someone is gonna pay $40 for something that they could, in theory, get for free is because the artists and record labels have done a nice job of selling the exclusivity and the differentiation. And, frankly, understanding their audience.” In B2B marketing, it's a reminder that when you make your audience feel like they're getting something rare and tailored, they'll lean in.Community turns customers into believers. Record Store Day isn't really about what you buy, it's about who you're with. Robert says, “This is where the power of community really comes in. It feels like a celebration of music. It feels like a celebration of vinyl... it feels like an event, a way to connect with people that are passionate about something like you are.” That emotional connection is the secret ingredient. For marketers, if your audience feels seen and connected, your brand becomes more than a service. It becomes a shared story.Go analog to cut through the noise. In a world of constant digital overload, physical media feels almost radical. Robert explains, “Analog physical media can really make an impact. We're all flooded with digital stuff all day, every day... the thing that cuts through that are physical things because they're so far, few and far between nowadays.” For marketers, this is a cue to think tactile because sometimes, the most unforgettable touchpoint isn't a notification, it's something your audience can actually hold.Quotes*“ When done right and in a very strategic way, analog physical media can really make an impact, right? We're all flooded with digital stuff all day, every day. There's the whole joke of you going from kind of your midsize screen to your small screen, to your big screen over the course of the day. And the thing that cuts through that are physical things because they're sort of so far few and far between nowadays.”*“ Record Store Day at the end of the day is really an awesome in-person event. And in-person events, I think, in general, can be really effective for marketers. And again, when they're well thought out and done well. One of the great things about this is that, again, it's about community. It's about doing something that people appreciate and like. It's about feeling very kind of personalized to the things that they're passionate about. And, I think again, it just reinforces the fact that there are great ways of connecting with your customers much more directly and, of course, physically than over email or something. And they have a much stronger impact when you are face to face with someone and they remember your name, or you have a conversation, or you enjoy the coffee, or the excitement in the atmosphere that the event brought you. So I think it's the way that these are run are a good example of how in-person events can and should be run and can really make a difference to marketing efforts.”“ We always, as content marketers and B2B marketers, I think, worry that we have one opportunity to kind of hook our audience. If we don't do it now, if we don't get everything we need, this is gonna pass us by. There's this trust of, ‘Hey, I am confident that over time I'm gonna show you the value of my content in this case, my music, and I'm gonna get hooked.' And that will be rewarded down the line. It's definitely a long-term play, but it is very counter to, I think, a lot of our instincts of squeeze as much as we can as quickly as we can.”Time Stamps[0:55] Meet Robert McCauley, Sr. Director, Content Marketing at Upwork[01:26] Why Record Store Day?[03:21] Origins of Record Store Day[10:26] The Draw of Vinyl[16:51] Robert's First Record Store Day[20:15] Value of Physical Music in a Digital Age[28:58] B2B Marketing Lessons from Record Store Day[47:43] Upwork's Content Strategy[51:41] Upwork's Recent Content Creation[55:21] Final Thoughts and TakeawaysLinksConnect with Robert on LinkedInLearn more about UpworkAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. We're selling stories, connection, and discovery.” In this episode of For the Love of Vinyl, host Scott Orr sits down with Terry Cole—co-owner of Plaid Room Records in Loveland, OH — for a candid and insightful look at what it takes to run a successful record store in 2025.
