Two friends and academics recap classic literature and take it off its pedestal. In our seventy-ninth episode, we go to P.E.I. to cover some children's lit: Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables (1908). In this episode, we cover what might be our queerest text to date, are in raptures about 'puffy' sleeves, Gilbert Blythe, and the CBC adaptation from 1985, and slip the emotional Daniel a Prozac.Cover art © Catherine Wu.Episode Theme: George Grant-Schaefer, 'Tales of the Red Man'. For most lawyers, opening a firm is a slow, carefully mapped-out process – but Kate Redman has turned that convention on its head, launching her own practice in just six weeks despite never having envisioned herself as a firm owner. In a recent episode of The Boutique Lawyer Show, host Grace Robbie speaks with Kate Redman, the director and principal solicitor of Kate Redman & Associates, about her remarkable journey of launching her practice in just six weeks despite never having previously envisioned running a firm. Redman reflects on the mindset shift and self-belief that made it possible and shares insights into balancing the intense demands of starting a business with the realities of personal commitments and parenthood. Redman also reveals the key priorities she focused on to open her firm within such a tight time frame, unpacks the biggest challenges she encountered along the way, reflects on the importance of turning lived experience into practical lessons, offers candid advice for lawyers considering taking the leap into firm ownership, and weighs in on whether she would recommend launching a practice under similarly intense time pressure.

Jason Redman learned love of country and the importance of service at a young age. His grandfather was a decorated World War II veteran and his father served during the Vietnam War. Before finishing high school, Redman enlisted in the U.S. Navy with one goal in mind: becoming a U.S. Navy SEAL.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Redman tells us about the unexpected health challenge he faced in boot camp before he could pursue his dream of becoming a SEAL. He then walks us through Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training, why so many give up during Hell Week, and another very difficult part of training where many candidates wash out.Redman then takes us on his 2005 deployment to Afghanistan and explains how it got off to such a devastating start. He also explains how his mounting frustrations led to some poor decisions that could have proven very costly. Then, Redman details his 2007 deployment to Iraq and describes the enemy ambush that badly wounded him. It's been 37 some odd years since moe. first started coming together at the University of Buffalo. Since then they've released 14 albums. They've played on some huge stages, playing Woodstock '99, rocking out Bonnaroo throughout the 2000's. Inviting bands like The Avett Brothers, The Black Keys, Bruce Hornsby, Method Man and Redman and so many others to their moe.down festival. And this year they're firing moe.down back up. Before moe. starts off on their Born to Fly tour (they'll be in Ponte Vedra on 3/26) their lead singer Rob Derhak was nice enough to stop by the show! Rob and Doc talked about Rob's Boston fandom, the NBA playoffs, starting the band, getting lumped into the "jam band" scene, playing '99 Woodstock, performing with his daughter, doing moe.down, playing with Goose and so much more. Meanwhile on the rest of the show Doc has assembled the perfect cattle drive posse for 1986. The cattle drive posse includes Stanley Tucci, Cowboy Kent Rollins, Jack Nicholson, Bill Murray and Dick Van Dyke. It doesn't make much sense in this description...but trust us, it doesn't make sense in the show either. Shottie on Miami Hip-Hop and His JourneyIn this episode of Florida Sound Archive, we're joined by Miami rapper Shottie for a deep dive into his journey through hip-hop, from his earliest beginnings to what's next.Born in the Dominican Republic and later moving to New York City, Shottie shares how the passing of his father ultimately brought him to Miami, where he grew up in the Kendall area. He reflects on first discovering hip-hop through DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and the classic track Parents Just Don't Understand, before diving deeper into the culture with artists like Redman, Wu-Tang Clan, and Naughty by Nature. We also explore his discovery of Miami hip-hop pioneers including Trick Daddy, JT Money, 2 Live Crew, Mother Superior, Mr. Mic Rippa, and DJ Craze, and how learning about their work gave him a broader perspective on Miami hip-hop and its place within the larger culture.Shottie walks us through starting to rap in high school under his original stage name Deadshot, performing early shows at the Cameo Theater (Miami Beach) and the Chili Pepper (Coconut Grove), and forming the group IDEE4, which made the leap to Los Angeles before ultimately returning to South Florida six months later. We get into his creative process, including his approach to recording, collaborating with producers and rappers locally and internationally, developing album artwork, and the sonic and cinematic influences that shape his projects. Shottie also reflects on performances in Orlando, New York City, Fort Wayne, and Toronto, and what lies ahead in terms of touring and new music.

In this episode of Secrets of the Underworld, Neil Cummins sits down with Liverpool dance music pioneer Ian Redman, the driving force behind chart-smashing act Ultrabeat. From a dyslexic class clown in Crosby with a Sony Walkman glued to his ear, to headlining clubs at just 15 years old, Ian’s story is pure graft, hustle and Scouse belief. He opens up about sneaking into the DJ booth at The Paradox as a teenager, selling records in Liverpool’s legendary Three Beat Records and boldly cold-calling labels until they handed him remix opportunities that would change his life. Then came Green Eyes — a track that exploded onto the UK charts and became a generational anthem. Ian reveals how the record was made, the surreal experience of performing on national television and the whirlwind of fame, money and excess that followed.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Witness to Yesterday (The Champlain Society Podcast on Canadian History)
Donald Wright speaks with Don Nerbas and Tess Elsworthy about their book McGill in History. This book brings together diverse historiographies and perspectives to critically examine how McGill has been implicated in power structures and is the product of conflicting ideologies. James McGill, the university's namesake, owned and profited from the sale of enslaved Black and Indigenous people, a legacy highlighted by the removal of his statue and ongoing debates over the racially charged Redman name used by the men's sports teams. Imperialism, settler colonialism, slavery, sexism, and homophobia are elements of McGill's story that must be fully integrated into a broader understanding of the university's institutional history. Challenging siloed narratives with new research, the contributors in this volume highlight the important task of scholars to scrutinize and confront history that is unflattering and to rethink their institution's own story – a reckoning happening across many institutions of higher education around the world. Don Nerbas is associate professor of history and St Andrew's Society/McEuen Scholarship Foundation Chair in Canadian-Scottish Studies at McGill University. Tess Elsworthy is an MA student in the Department of History and Classical Studies at McGill University in Montreal studying under Laura Madokoro. Sensory is not an extra layer. It is the ground your child is standing on. In this conversation, occupational therapist Cindy Duffy and Secret Genius Project founder Donna Redman join me to explore behavior through a sensory lens. Donna shares her research into our connection with art, science, and nature, and how we first meet the world through our senses. Cindy explains why she has always viewed behavior as information, not defiance, and how environmental details—buzzing fluorescent lights, rushing schedules, echoes in a room, or even the hum of a refrigerator—can make a child feel regulated or completely overwhelmed. Cindy also walks us through powerful real-life examples: children whose "messy work" and math meltdowns were actually undiagnosed vision issues; adults who spent decades believing they were "stupid" before anyone evaluated their vestibular and visual systems; and a teacher who realized she was sensory sensitive in a classroom full of seekers and changed everything by tending to her own nervous system. We talk about babies arriving with distinct sensory profiles, siblings with very different needs, and parents who feel mismatched with their child until they understand what kind of touch, movement, and energy that child's body is asking for. This episode is a reminder that behavior makes sense, sensory profiles matter, and there is often a "secret genius" waiting to be noticed once we stop blaming willpower and start listening to the body. Key Takeaways Behavior is communication. When kids lash out, avoid, or shut down, their bodies and brains are telling us something important. We are sensory beings first. Our first encounter with the world is through our senses, yet sensory processing is often misunderstood at school and at home. Environment shapes regulation. Light, sound, echoes, transitions, schedules, and background noise all influence how overwhelmed or calm a child feels. Sensory and vision challenges can hide under "behavior." Erasing constantly, pressing too hard with a pencil, rereading lines, or melting down around math may point to sensory or visual strain—not intelligence. Mislabeling can be harmful. When kids are shamed or disciplined for reactions they cannot control, they often internalize the belief that they are the problem. Everyone has a sensory profile. Understanding your child's profile helps you support them; understanding your own helps you show up more calmly. Adults have sensory needs too. When caregivers manage their own nervous systems, the entire dynamic can shift. Strengths matter as much as challenges. A strengths-based plan often opens doors that behavior plans alone cannot. Babies arrive with a sensory story. When sensory needs are honored early, kids do not have to "act out" to get what their bodies need. There is a "secret genius" under the struggle. Once sensory and nervous system needs are understood, children's gifts often become visible. About Donna Redman and Cindy Duffy Donna Redman is the founder and president of The Secret Genius Project. Her research into the origins of creativity and self-expression explores the deep connection between art, science, nature, and the nervous system. Drawing from philosophy, quantum physics, art therapy, and mathematics, Donna curates programs that help families, educators, and professionals better understand human potential. The Secret Genius of Sensory Processing, created with occupational therapist Cindy Duffy, is one of the first offerings in the series. Cindy Duffy is an occupational therapist who has served communities in Northeast Pennsylvania for more than forty years. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from Kean University and an Advanced Pediatric Certificate from Misericordia University. Cindy has worked across public education, geriatrics, rehabilitation, and recovery programs, and is widely respected for her intuitive ability to interpret complex sensory profiles. She now maintains a private practice and teaches The Secret Genius of Sensory Processing, helping parents and professionals understand behavior through a sensory and nervous system lens.
