Not sure about you, but it seems like I spend most of my time in the future. We're told to live in the present, of course—and I try. But at any opportunity my mind just races ahead, like an eager puppy. I'm planning my next meal, dwelling on that looming deadline, imagining the possibilities that lie ahead. In one sense, all this time spent puttering around tomorrow-land is kind of regrettable. But in another sense it's really quite extraordinary. When we think ahead, when we cast our thoughts into the future, we're exercising an ability that some consider uniquely human. My guest today is Dr. Adam Bulley. Adam is a psychologist and Postdoctoral Fellow affiliated with the University of Sydney and Harvard. Along with his co-authors Thomas Suddendorf & Jonathan Redshaw, Adam recently published a book titled, The Invention of Tomorrow: A Natural History of Foresight. In this conversation, Adam and I talk about two constructs central to the book—"mental time travel" and foresight. We discuss how these constructs relate to memory and to imagination. We dig into the question of whether our abilities to think ahead are really uniquely human. We review the archeological evidence for the emergence of foresight in our species' evolution. And we also touch on—among other topics and tidbits— hoarding behavior in squirrels, tool use in chimpanzees, the Bischof-Köhler hypothesis, the control of fire, Incan quipus, hand axes, and longtermism. Foresight is one of those especially tentacly topics. It connects to so many different other abilities and to so many questions about minds, culture, evolution. Both in the book and here in this conversation, Adam proves to be quite a skilled guide to all these connections. There's also something else notable about Adam: he's an alum of the Diverse Intelligences Summer Institute (DISI). In fact, he was a participant in the first iteration of the program, back in 2018. So if you too aspire to do cool research, write cool books, and be interviewed on the coolest podcasts around, you might consider applying. Just note that review of applications begins soon: Feb 13. More info at: disi.org Alright, friends, on to my chat with Adam Bulley. Enjoy! A transcript of this episode will be available soon. When COVID-19 forced the world to stop, our natural world breathed a sigh of relief. Cities were quiet, air pollution dropped and birdsong could be heard outside an apartment window. Bodies of water tarnished by human activity returned to their beautiful blue hues. However, it was also the change in people during the pandemic who found a new respect for Mother Nature and the climate crisis was as clear as ever. Today's guest, global futurist Victoria Redshaw brings us a thoughtful and inspiring conversation where she details these societal changes and how consumers, designers, creators and retailers are moving forward and have been redirected by a pandemic into a future where nature is truly at the forefront. Victoria is the Lead Futurist at trend forecasting agency Scarlet Opus, who are dedicated to providing trend forecasting services to the interiors sector internationally, and are headquartered in the UK. Victoria and I move into a larger conversation on a return to naturalness, zero-waste materials, the environmental mindset of consumers, the circular economy and just how we got to this exciting place and will evolve from here. On a very deep and physical level, I think there's a widespread appreciation, a realisation even that we're just a small part of a much bigger ecosystem, and that we need to live in harmony with nature ~ Victoria Redshaw, Scarlet Opus. The past few weeks were filled with incredible mobilizations in order to protect the Lincoln Annex School in New Brunswick, which is at risk of being sold to Robert Wood Johnson in order to expand the Rutgers Cancer Institute. If the plan goes through, students could end up at a warehouse school outside of the fifth and sixth wards. But it’s also important to remember that the fight to protect New Brunswick schools did not begin with the threats to Lincoln Annex, nor will it end there, regardless of what the end result may be. For many longtime community members, the controversy over the Lincoln Annex is reminiscent of what happened with the Redshaw School, where students were put in the warehouse school for nearly 10 years while the new facility faced significant delays in construction. In addition, for years, courageous parents throughout the city have been working to ensure that school facilities in New Brunswick have adequate air conditioning, which remains an ongoing problem. Parents in Unidos por Escuelas Dignas have put pressure on the Board of Education to retrofit school buildings with air conditioning, and they’ve made major strides in making sure that New Brunswick kids have access to comfortable and healthy learning environments. Today we are joined by Jenifer Garcia, a Rutgers student and an alumnus of the New Brunswick School system. Jennifer spent time in the warehouse school while Redshaw was under construction. We are also joined by Yolanda Moncada, president and founder Unidos por Escuelas Dignas, someone who has helped get the group off the ground and is an active member of the new coalition to defend the Lincoln Annex.

Today's Christmas edition of Cyber Monday is a review of 2019. In this mini episode, Christian & Dominic reminisce about the past year and honor previous guests of the show. Since the show began in September, some key themes have emerged that include: how to get started in cyber security, the importance of the role culture plays in cyber risk management and some myths that were busted. Among those myths are that cyber criminals don't target smaller businesses. 2019 was a year with no shortage of cyber attacks and data breaches in the news. Dominic gives a public service announcement not to buy into the sensationalism often portrayed in the media, but to look at the facts from reliable sources. The episode concludes with a ‘holiday message' to take your cyber security seriously over the holidays and always (cyber criminals sometimes work evenings, weekends and holidays)! Merry Christmas!
Cyber.SC is my "go-to" source when my clients need a referral to a cybersecurity expert. Christian Redshaw and Dominic Vogel have the experience and expertise to guide their business clients through the process of securing their business data, intellectual property and systems in order to minimize the risk of costly and destructive cyber attacks. Cyber.SC begins with an assessment of your business's state of information security maturity. Using the results of that assessment as a "baseline", Cyber.SC provides their clients with a 20-point roadmap to secure their organization. Listen carefully as these gentlemen discuss the incredibly high cost of hiring an internal Chief Information Security Officer (that may be with you for only a brief period of time) vs. using an external resource like Cyber.SC. They also discuss the common misconception that cybersecurity is an IT or technology problem and why it really IS NOT. The most important factor in minimizing your business's risk of a cyber attack is to act BEFORE something awful happens. Being proactive is ALWAYS better than merely reacting to cyber crime. The Horse River Wildfire that took place in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, in May 2016, was unprecedented in Canadian history. Eighty-eight thousand people needed to be evacuated in the span of only a few hours, for a month-long evacuation. Throughout this conversation, Jordan generously shares his biggest lessons and takeaways from this experience. It’s an insightful and engaging conversation that I know you’ll enjoy! This episode of The Crisis Intelligence Podcast discusses: The crisis communication strategies Jordan and his team used to effectively evacuate 88,000 people in only a few hours. How Jordan and his team leveraged monitoring tools to help expand the reach of their crisis communications. The biggest lessons Jordan learned while managing this crisis. This is an interview with Toby Redshaw, Motorola's Corporate Vice President of Information Technology Strategy, Architecture & e-Business, at DiamondCluster's DX Summit in early March 2006. He told me that Motorola, #49 on the Fortune 500, has almost 2,000 internal wikis (that's separate wikis, each with many pages), and 2,700 blogs used by 60,000 of their 68,000 employees daily. 4,000-5,000 people are actively contributing, the rest mainly read. Toby tells us about what wikis and blogs are used for, how they rolled them out, what benefits they get, how they chose what they did, experience with bad behavior, etc. Near the end, he also talks about their experiences with Service Oriented Architecture (SOA).
