Introduction Welcome to RetroLogic! I'm Dan Caporello here with Sam Wagers, John Cummis and Shannon Eno   But RetroLogic isn't just a podcast. It's a community of retro gamers! - We've got an active, friendly, and free discord. - Giveaways - Contests - AND Dive into our family of Retro podcasts! Like RetroGroove, a music history podcast, and On Topic Retro, a podcast dedicated to 1 video game per episode hosted by our very own John Cummins. - you can find everything at our website retrologic.games Tell me one thing that happened this week! The Price Is Retro If this is your first time playing Price Is Retro, here's how we play. I'm going to list off 4 or 5 games and everyone has to guess how much the lot is worth in total. Whoever is closest to the actual value wins that round! Everyone has a list and everyone guesses on each other's list. At the end, the player that won the most rounds wins the episode! But watch out for the robot Deus Guess Machina! He averages all of our guesses together for his own guess Shan's list Sam's list John's list Dan's list   Trivia Card   Show Topic Console Iterations Community Couch   @everyone it's time to dust off the old community couch! What are your opinions on console iterations? Do you prefer the model of console iteration that we usually get from Nintendo (sometging new and different) or prefer the PS/Xbox (Same but more powerful) route. Also do you like mid generation iterations like pro models or do you usually skip those. Maybe you wait for the pro model lol. Let's us know and we will discuss this on the next show!   5 Ri Sol-ju — 1/24/2025 10:11 AM I prefer mind gen iterations like PS Xbox but I generally get the iterations if there is an improvement on battery or screen. The only one I didn't get was the Steam Deck OLED because it was just a sunk cost of 900 after selling the original, I guess cost also factors in. I usually get everything at launch if available   @Datfast (John) @everyone it's time to dust off the old community couch! Solo — 1/24/2025 10:16 AM Considering how hugely successful the Switch was I am hearing people say Nintendo played it safe and smart with this new console. I don't see that as a bad thing at all as I feel if it is not broke don't try to fix it. The Switch is being modeled by other companies and to have an entry that is more powerful will be great. Would rather have something that brings more games to play better and more 3rd party releases than the next whimsical features they May or may not stick. Can't help but think back to all the comments of the MK1 pics of people saying “but Nintendo fans say graphics don't matter.” Drex1981 — 1/24/2025 10:17 AM The only iteration I was interested in was the DS Lite. That was a massive step up over the regular DS. I could care less about the PS4 pro or PS5 pro. My OG switch is serving me just fine.   @Datfast (John) @everyone it's time to dust off the old community couch! Your Wallet's Defense Attorney — 1/24/2025 3:19 PM I kinda just don't really take notice of them DoubleD — 1/24/2025 3:19 PM I definitely get more excited about Nintendo console iterations, but will also always get the next PlayStation console as well, just because that's where the new games are going to be. I will say that I actually delayed my purchase of the PS5 for a while, because initially there weren't many games that I was interested in that weren't also available on the PS4. Regarding mid gen iterations, it's all about the bang for the buck. When the PS4 Pro came out, I was upgrading my TV to a 4K one, so I was motivated to upgrade to the Pro as well to get the most out of the TV, and was very happy with the decision. I also got a Switch lite during the pandemic because my wife was hogging my Switch with Animal Crossing, but now it's just collecting dust. I never got an OLED Switch, because I primarily play it docked.   @Datfast (John) @everyone it's time to dust off the old community couch! SkinnyMatt — 1/24/2025 8:10 PM Meh. Whatever they want to do. It's their business. Speaking of model iterations, when does the Commodore 65 come out? In Japan, the PC Engine was very successful. It gained strong third-party support and outsold the Famicom at its 1987 debut, eventually becoming the Super Famicom's main rival.   Dan Played: Bomberman Panic Bomber Super Darius Bonks Revenge New Adventure Island Soldier Blade Community Comments: Flightsy —  Unfortunately, I have no experience with the TurboGrafx-16.  I CAN tell you it's been used on Price is Retro in Season 1 seven times (5 by @Dan - RetroLogic and 2 by @Datfast ).  The add-on TG-CD has been used only once (by @16bitwar-nomad), but it was used 4 episodes before the regular TG-16!   OctoRock (Adam) —  In 3rd and 4th grade I had a friend who had both a TurboGrafx and a Sega Genesis, so playing at his house was my first introduction to both of those systems. He only had a few TurboGrax games, Bonk's Adventure and a couple others I have no memory of because we almost never played it since the Genesis just seemed better in every conceivable way.   oops —  I remember one kid had it at my school and he would always try and tell us how bonk was better than Mario or sonic. No one believed him. Even in high school we would remind him of his bad taste on the playground. The first of which is the DmC reboot, which was so tonally discordant with the rest of the series with its edgelord "hollywood-ification" of the plot and characters. It's a decent action game mechanically and would have been well received if they simply... didn't call it DmC. Then there's DMC2, which is a dull and bad video game by any measure. You'd be doing yourself a favor by going straight from 1 to 3, it's that unremarkable.   twodollarhero — 06/23/2021 I think a lot of the more recent Super Monkey Ball games are a good example of this. I've been playing SMB2 again lately (because I'm so hyped for Banana Mania) and bouncing from that (no pun intended) to something like Banana Blitz HD is a jarring experience.  The more modern entries of the series - which vastly outnumber what fans consider to be the “good” games - totally misrepresent what the games are about. Suddenly, there's jumping mechanics and every level is littered with guard rails or worst of all, control gimmicks. The series is about fun, challenging arcade gameplay with pitch perfect controls… and most of the games in the series at this point aren't about that anymore.   SpiderShan — 06/23/2021 I guess I'd have to go with Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World for Wii. There are quite a few “Tales of” games and spin-offs and Tales of Symphonia for GameCube is considered one of the best. I know it's my favorite in the series. I was hyped to play the sequel but they decided to change a lot of the gameplay including the use of monsters in place of human companions. You play as characters completely unrelated to the original game and the characters that I loved from the first game were “guest characters” in the sequel that would come and go and were a hollow shell of what they were before. It's such a departure from what made the original so special. ChrisHL94Rewind

Question of the week InfiniteBlue — 06/02/2021 Here's a question for everyone: What's a game that had RNG (aka random chance) greatly affect your experience with it, for better or for worse?   RNG has been on my mind a lot lately as I've recently finished 100%ing Pokemon Stadium 2. There were countless instances where my strategy would have completely shut down the CPU opponents, only to be foiled by a convenient string of bad luck to give the CPU a cheesy win. On the flip side, that same RNG was enormously satisfying the times when it went my way, giving me a fighting chance using the underpowered rental Pokemon. There were a couple times in the Challenge Cup where a timely critical or miss was the only way to even reach a winnable state.   Flightsy — 06/02/2021 For my Kirby's Dream Land letsplay (yes I know I won't shut up about it),  for the 1 vitality 1 life run, trying to beat Kabula was practically up to RNG.  She fires so fast it's impossible to consciously predict, so I had to rely on muscle memory built up over months and luck.  I'd say that effected my experience.   Sam: XCOM 2, Crusader kings 2, 3, Fire emblem Iron man mode really forces a different way of playing.  They should add that to fire emblem!   hambone jonny — 06/04/2021 If this hasn't already been asked, what are some of your favorite “continue” screens?  Street Fighter 2 with the character's face all pummeled in comes to mind for me.   solo_something — 06/04/2021 That one comes into my mind as well and Kid Icarus running across the sky ridge thing and shooting up at your score   16bitnomad — 06/04/2021 The final fight series was pretty good…dynamite, water, and spikes!!   SpiderShan — Yesterday at 5:54 AM Does the one for Zelda 2 count?  It was more the laugh than anything else!(Game Over… Return of Ganon)   Throwback Thursday Spotlight - Sam Wagers Mini Interview   Outro   Thanks for listening to the RetroLogic Podcast!
