“TWO YOUNG VAMPIRE HUNTERS SET OUT TO FULFILL THEIR DESTINY….” New protagonists for a new era. Initially, officially, considered to be a gaiden, Konami's second game entitled Vampire Killer was arguably canonised as Castlevania: Bloodlines in the USA. Leon, Leah and Sean talk whips, spears, level design and boss fights. Even the always excellent contributions from the Cane and Rinse community can't persuade us to spend much time on the neutered European/Australian PAL version, robbed of this instalment's signature pace and blood. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/podcast/cane_and_rinse_issue_638.mp3 Music featured in this issue: 1. But these days, I'm a fan of both. And they go together like peanut butter and chocolate with Castlevania Bloodlines, which is now one of my favourite Genesis games! I've really grown to appreciate the Castlevania series, and for my money, these games are at their peak on 16-bit hardware. It's safe to say that Super Castlevania IV and Bloodlines are now my favourite Vania games. This one looks great, plays great, and of course, it's tough; just the way I like my retro titles. Ye olde Bradley McCue returns to the show this week, both to talk about how much he loves this game, and to try to explain the story to me, because I'm absolutely fucking lost. Great game, killer guest, mediocre podcast. Why WOULDN'T you listen?! And before we hunt vampires or something, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks for advice with some rare items in their game collection. Will we ever cover PS4/XBox One games on RTG? And with all these layoffs, is the video game market crashing?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 Konami Genesis titles: Rocket Knight Adventures, Contra: Hard Corps, and Sunset Riders. Growing up is hard to do. The Castlevania series is at a crossroads and is making the difficult jump to the 3d generation of gaming with great success and awkward failures. In part 2 of our Castlevania Series, we discuss Castlevania Bloodlines, Symphony of the Night, Legends, Castlevania 64, Legacy of Darkness, Circle of the Moon, and Harmony of Dissonance. The dream team converges with Igarashi, Yamane, and Kojima. Metroidvania is born and reigns supreme! Hair of the Dogcast is a proud member of the HyperX Podcast Network. A few months ago, we reviewed Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I didn't really like it, and I took a lot of shit for that opinion (which I stand by, screw that stupid inverted castle). This week, we're looking another Castlevania - Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. And I'm happy (and relieved) to say that it was everything I wanted SOTN to be. This game is outstanding. From the bad-ass soul sucking (and you can suck EVERY enemy in the game!), to the simplified inventory system, to the lack of a hidden second half of the game without fucking telling you it's there, Aria of Sorrow absolutely blew my expectations out of the water. I'm no Castlevania expert, but in my limited experience with the series, I'd probably place Sorrow atop my official Vania of Castle rankings. Plus, what kind of beast was the GBA? Such a powerhouse of a console! My buddy Bradley McCue returns to the show this week, (he was actually my guest on the Symphony of the Night episode as well), and we didn't butt heads nearly as much this time around. He had a couple more nitpicks than I did, but at the end of the day we both agreed that Aria of Sorrow is just a damned fine piece of video game. And before we talk Sorrowing Arias, I roll out another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, we talk about what's a better investment of your gaming dollar: a AAA game, or a handful of random indie titles? We talk about Achievements/Trophies for retro games via the website RetroAchivements. And what's the toughest game I've played in the past year or so? PLUS, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', featuring three Castlevania Classics: Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, Super Castlevania IV, and Castlevania: Bloodlines. The following podcast is intended for mature audiences. It may contain opinions and comments about Castlevania: Symphony of the Night that some might find offensive. Listener discretion is advised. Symphony of the Night is considered by many to be one of the greatest video games of all-time. It's one of the pioneers of the Metroidvania genre (hence the name), and it's easily one of the games I've been asked to review the most over the years. I'd never played it before, so when it won our Patreon poll, I was excited. I love metroidvanias, I love retro games, this should be a lay-up, right?? Well, not exactly. I gotta be honest - I didn't love this game. Truth be told, I didn't like it very much at all. It looks great, it sounds nice. I respect what it did for a genre I love so much. But I found it, kinda boring. Tedious. And "the best part of the game" is hidden in the most obnoxious fashion possible. I, I just don't get why this game is so popular. But my guest, Bradley McCue, does. He loves this game, which is why he was the perfect ying to my yang this week. I had no choice but to agree with some of the stuff he loved, and he had no choice but to come along with a few mechanics that I hated. And I want to be clear. There's no Angry Adam this week. I don't rip SotN a new ass or anything. I respect its legacy, and I tried my best to show as much. But I don't like this game, and this week, I'm gonna tell you why. And of course, before I completely ruin my reputation and RTG comes crashing down all around me, I run through another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, we talk about how damned good Sega Genesis soundtracks are. Were we better gamers when we were kids? And what's the best controller for the Nintendo Switch? PLUS, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', featuring three pre-SotN Castlevania games - Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, Super Castlevania IV, and Castlevania: Bloodlines. After having a few technical difficulties with the attempt at extra audio in last week’s Castlevania: Bloodlines focused episode, we couldn’t leave well enough alone. We’re back with another Castlevania bonanza. This time with that 1997 PS1 classic: Symphony of The Night. We appear to have the workflow a little more figured out this time around when it comes to patching in some tunes so sit back, relax, and allow yourself absorb our fond recollections of a classic game which remains a favourite for both of us.
Matt’s been a bit of a rascal this week. He’s been staying up late, and consuming spiritual opium. Tisk tisk, Matt. Tisk tisk. While our podcast kicks off on a bit of an aside on Video Games in China, the meaty center of this week’s audiophile unfriendly episode of The Vagabond Gamecast zones in on the Sega Genesis classic: Castlevania: Bloodlines (aka バンパイアキラー for those of you who may be dripping with curiosity over what they called this title in Japan). Having both just completed our very first playthroughs of the game this week, we do a bit of a[...]

Available on the Castlevania collection on Switch Question of the week 16bitnomad — Got a good question for everyone…what's your biggest pet peeve about buying retro games?? (Other than the price!!!) Mine has to be the placement of pricing stickers. They can be placed on the cartridge artwork, over another sticker on a case, not even be a sticker but a marker, and it just drives me up the wall. I will pick up some retro stuff and when I get home the first thing I do is break out a razer blade and the alcohol and go to cleaning. twodollarhero — if I can't trust a store to authenticate their product, don't gripe at ME for wanting to authenticate it before I buy. I've straight up brought a triwing with me into a shop before to ask if I could authenticate a cart before buying. If you're confident that you're selling authentic games, what's the problem? SpiderShan — It's not a huge thing in the grand scheme of things but my pet peeve is buying a game or system online and receiving it really dusty/dirty. Like, can't you at least drag a cloth across it to remove a little dust?!?Eric Plunk — Outdated prices on games that they look prices up on once they're brought up to the register. Nothing will make me walk out faster.InfiniteBlue — I used to spend summer Saturdays biking to garage sales around my city to look for games, but in the last 4-5 years it's gotten insane with resellers, craigslist hawks, and ravenous collectors buying up anything worthwhile literally as soon as they open. Sorry, I had a hard time phrasing this question, so it's prolly a bit confusing. Maybe an example might help. For me I would say Kirby Star Allies. Although I have issues with Star Allies, I don't think it's a bad game. I picked it because I feel that it makes the Kirby franchise, or at least the modern Kirby games, seem a lot more "Kiddie" than it actually is, and because it's the main Kirby game on switch I feel that it has spread this impression to a lot of people. It's very tempting for me to write down a full lecture on why I think that is right here, but I think that's enough for you all to hopefully get an idea of what I mean by the question. InfiniteBlue — 06/23/2021 The Devil May Cry franchise has two of these. The first of which is the DmC reboot, which was so tonally discordant with the rest of the series with its edgelord "hollywood-ification" of the plot and characters. It's a decent action game mechanically and would have been well received if they simply... didn't call it DmC. Then there's DMC2, which is a dull and bad video game by any measure. You'd be doing yourself a favor by going straight from 1 to 3, it's that unremarkable. twodollarhero — 06/23/2021 I think a lot of the more recent Super Monkey Ball games are a good example of this. I've been playing SMB2 again lately (because I'm so hyped for Banana Mania) and bouncing from that (no pun intended) to something like Banana Blitz HD is a jarring experience. The more modern entries of the series - which vastly outnumber what fans consider to be the “good” games - totally misrepresent what the games are about. Suddenly, there's jumping mechanics and every level is littered with guard rails or worst of all, control gimmicks. The series is about fun, challenging arcade gameplay with pitch perfect controls… and most of the games in the series at this point aren't about that anymore. SpiderShan — 06/23/2021 I guess I'd have to go with Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World for Wii. There are quite a few “Tales of” games and spin-offs and Tales of Symphonia for GameCube is considered one of the best. I know it's my favorite in the series. I was hyped to play the sequel but they decided to change a lot of the gameplay including the use of monsters in place of human companions. You play as characters completely unrelated to the original game and the characters that I loved from the first game were “guest characters” in the sequel that would come and go and were a hollow shell of what they were before. It's such a departure from what made the original so special. ChrisHL94Rewind

Welcome to episode 144 of Podcast vs Player, this week: Sega has announced the Genesis Mini--or Mega Drive Mini, if you're in Europe. The compact version of its classic 16-bit console will allow fans to indulge their nostalgia and play a range of old school games such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Castlevania: Bloodlines, and Gunstar Heroes on modern displays. Plus, the reveal of Borderlands 3 didn't go without its share of controversy. As part of the announcement, developer Gearbox and publisher 2K revealed that it would be exclusive to the Epic Games Store until April 2020. This led to a backlash in the form of review bombing older Borderlands games on Steam. Now Gearbox head Randy Pitchford has stepped in to let offenders know they may actually be making things worse for themselves. And more!
