This week, we're taking the show a place it's never gone before: back to the launch of the Wii U! We're reviewing the Zelda-themed attraction Battle Quest, which was one of twelve Nintendo franchise themed mini games included in the Wii U launch title / showcase game Nintendo Land! We talk about the levels, swordfighting with the Wiimote versus archery with the Game Pad, the design of the sock-puppet characters, if Nintendo Land contributed to the Wii U's poor first impression, some of the other attractions in the game, and maybe most importantly: if there was a reason we had never talked about Battle Quest before. Come listen, and don't forget: TWO DAYS until you can come support Andy and the Omega Metroid team as they stream on YouTube Feb 12-16 raising money for the Trevor Project! No? Eh, esatto. Comunque Zack & Wiki era bello lo stesso, dai. Buon ascolto! It's that time of year again for Geoff Keighley to wave his magic Wiimote and give us the gift of new game trailers to drool over for the next few months! Nick and Josh have chosen a couple games showcased during the announcements to discuss at length, and Andy drops a few honorable mentions! Nick's picks: No Rest for the Wicked - From Moon Studios, the award-winning developers of Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps comes No Rest for the Wicked, a visceral, precision Action RPG set to reinvent the genre. - Moon Studios (Steam, Xbox, PS5, TBA) Light No Fire - A game about adventure, building, survival and exploration together. Set on a fantasy planet the size of Earth. - Hello Games (Steam, TBA) Josh's picks: Marvel's Blade - In Marvel's Blade, Eric Brooks is the legendary Daywalker, half-man, half-vampire torn between the warm society of the living and the rushing power of the undead. From Bethesda and Arkane Lyon, the studio that brought you Dishonored and “DEATHLOOP”, Marvel's Blade is a mature, single-player, third-person game set in the heart of Paris, now in development in collaboration with Marvel Games. - Arkane Studios (PC, Xbox, TBA) EXODUS - EXODUS was announced at The Game Awards 2023 and is an epic new sci-fi action-adventure role-playing game franchise developed by the team at Archetype Entertainment. Produced by Blur Studio. BECOME THE TRAVELER. - Archetype Entertainment (PC, Xbox, PS5) Honorable mentions: Sega announced it's working on at least 5 remakes, possibly more, and possibly new IP! We aren't holding our breath on that last one, but here's the trailer which contains Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage! Hideo Kojima has announced a new multi-media/new media horror project he's been cooking up with genre enthusiast Jordan Peele! Little is known about the project, but there's likely hints and spoilers for the upcoming game hidden in the trailer as usual! Let us know if you catch anything! Here's the Trailer! Sony Santa Monica hit us over the head with a brand new DLC, free to owners of the game! This one is called God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla. More God of War is always good God of War isn't it? Oh yeah, and it's out already by the time you're reading this! Embark Studios pulled a fast one on us, and dropped THE FINALS Season 1 during The Game Awards! Jump in now, free on your platform of choice! A link to the Steam version is here. From the creators of the humble smash hit Untitled Goose Game, comes a new game Big Walk. House House describes the game as a “Cooperative Online Walker-Talker” Set out with your friends through a wide-open world full of challenges, puzzles, and discoveries. You'll need to work together to find your way around, stay in contact using an assortment of tools and toys, and figure out new ways to communicate when you suddenly find yourself speechless. Adventuring aside, there's plenty of time to just hang out. Sit and watch the sunset, or steal your friend's binoculars and kick them into the ocean. Spending time with friends is the best part of a big walk. A link to the Steam version is here. Lightspeed Studios showed off their project LAST SENTINEL. Set in dystopian Tokyo, this is an open-world action game with a seriously cool trailer. While we don't know much about the game, and haven't seen any gameplay, the trailer sure does look good! What would any game show be without a few Warhammer 40k games? How about the long-awaited Space Marine 2? The game looks awesome from what we've seen so far, and if the first game is any indicator, we'll be romping around in powersuits draining the blood of our foes in religious fervor come Sept, 9th 2024! Mecha Break is another in a series of new mech games we've been seeing lately. It looks faster-paced than Armored Core IV: Fires of Rubicon, and may be exactly what some mecha lovers need! There was plenty more shown at The Game Awards this year! If you weren't able to catch it live, and would like to see the whole show in it's entirety it's available here! Happy gaming everyone! #thegameawards #tga2023 #gameoftheyear

Zieh dein Schwert, Gaijin! The gang are back once again to talk about Metroid Prime 4, but this time, to focus on what exactly the game needs in order to be a massive success. Obviously, things like good marketing and quality are a given, but what about beyond that? Does Metroid Prime 4 need to be a launch title for the Switch 2? Should it utilize the maximum power of the Switch 2, even if it means sacrificing a Switch port? Would calling it Prime 4 turn off players who haven't played the original Trilogy? Is a killer soundtrack an absolute requirement? What does 4 need to do to break free and evolve from previous Metroid Prime titles? All of this discussed and so much more, plus some Sea of Stars talk, Wiimote stories, and a pumpkin spice latte update. Don't miss out! Visit OmegaMetroid.com! Subscribe! Support us on Patreon! The Nintendo Wii, introduced in 2006, helped usher in a moment of retro-reinvention in video game play. This hugely popular console system, codenamed Revolution during development, signaled a turn away from fully immersive, time-consuming MMORPGs or forty-hour FPS games and back toward family fun in the living room. Players using the wireless motion-sensitive controller (the Wii Remote, or “Wiimote”) play with their whole bodies, waving, swinging, swaying. The mimetic interface shifts attention from what's on the screen to what's happening in physical space. Codename Revolution describes the Wii's impact in technological, social, and cultural terms, examining the Wii as a system of interrelated hardware and software that was consciously designed to promote social play in physical space. Each chapter of Codename Revolution focuses on a major component of the Wii as a platform: the console itself, designed to be low-powered and nimble; the iconic Wii Remote; Wii Fit Plus, and its controller, the Wii Balance Board; the Wii Channels interface and Nintendo's distribution system; and the Wii as a social platform that not only affords multiplayer options but also encourages social interaction in shared physical space. Finally, the authors connect the Wii's revolution in mimetic interface gaming—which eventually led to the release of Sony's Move and Microsoft's Kinect—to some of the economic and technological conditions that influence the possibility of making something new in this arena of computing and culture. We wanted to look back at the last decade and consider how our tastes have changed, and how in some ways the things we used to love back then have gotten worse with time. Remember when we said we didn't have an episode this week? Well, Dylan recovered his audio and we're BACK, baby! And this time we actually remember to rate things on how pinball they are. Tune in this week to hear a deep dive into Mega Man X. That's right: we're talkin' robot morality, robot mortality, goofy robot names, unending cycles of robot violence, and also how Mortal Kombat is actually just the WWE for indoor kids. Also discussed: which controller is the best controller (and Willie goes full chaos in suggesting that the answer might be the Wiimote) and a preview of our looming Fire Emblem adventure. WHEW.
Former Links, PGA Championship Golf, and Tiger Woods PGA Tour lead Vance Cook explains how and why his team(s) created new ways to swing a virtual golf club — beginning with the C-shaped gauge in Links and leading into "TruSwing" on Front Page Sports Golf and PGA Championship, and then ending with the motion-controller (Wiimote) swing in Tiger Woods Wii. Also listen for insights into the difference between sports games that aim for simulation versus those that aim for the "emotional experience". This soundbite uses leftover material from Episode 27 - Links, though that story's not a pre-requisite for listening. It's always a lengthy discussion when chatting about The Legend of Zelda, and on today's episode we discuss Skyward Sword. My guests this time around include Dan Schiffmacher, Christian Missonak, and Jeremy Kanne. Seen as the game that both proved the use of the Wiimote, and also served as the Wii's swan song, we take a deep dive into this most divisive of Zelda games. Does Skyward Sword hold up in a post Breath of the Wild world? Where does the game succeed, and where does it fall short? Was the exploration of old cast aside in exchange for storytelling? And where does this game fall in the grander designs of the Zelda franchise? We chat all this, plus dive a bit into Link's Awakening and Metroid, in this sky bound episode. Music Selections from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, composed by Koji Kondo, owned by Nintendo and are included under fair use protection.
Short and weird one this week! Travelling and recovery gets in the way. But its still a fun discussion about wiimote accessories!
If you played video games in the 2000s, chances are you suffered from a Wiimote-related injury. Kate and Janine detail their Wii injuries (or Wiinjuries, if you will) as well as Kate's Wii championship title. Thanks as always to Paul Ryberg for our theme song. You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you? This week Kyle, Matthew and Natalie celebrate Varch/Garch/Smarch by welcoming back Aldrin Cornejo ("Aldrintendo Power" podcast) and talking about the long-running Legend of Zelda series. (They first discussed the series 3 years ago in a soon-to-be-released lost episode but had to shelve it for various reasons.) They discuss the brilliance of the N64 controller, the drawbacks to the Wiimote and Skyward Sword and debate backwards compatibility. They also talk about their first Zelda gaming experiences, why Zelda II: Adventure of Link might not be terrible, and unpack the awesomeness of Breath of the Wild and how it breaks from Zelda tradition. At one point, they have a fight over stylus storage, in which Nat and Laura think putting it back in the DS is optional, while Kyle and Matthew think they are monsters (Moblins, Tektites, Bokoblins... you choose). So sit back and enjoy the episode, but first, remember to go into the cave and grab your sword. After all, it's dangerous to go alone! This episode is sponsored by Mack Weldon. Montage : Mr Godjira.
First PJ tells us all about his recent Emmy winning experience, Dave pines for his new Roland D550 and MKS70, then we move on to the WiiMote to MIDI, Jordan Rudess shreds on the nanoKeys, then we ponder the merits of Resort Studios - Nassau Compass Point especially, then we're on to rare synths we have played..
We take a look at the new Wii MotionPlus addition for the WiiMote which allegedly ads true 1:1 motion control and increases the accuracy of the 3D positioning and it's musical possibilities - it's demonstrated by the new WiiMusic titles with people "playing" various instruments at the recent E3 demo. Then we talk about virtuoso drummers - with plenty of drummer jokes, then on to famous sounds, green technology and finally David Beckham in the Sharpies ad. Richard Evans, Mark Tinley, Dave Spiers and Nick Batt
