John Bartram was a Quaker farmer near Philadelphia in the mid 18th century. So how did he become North America's first great botanist? And how did he and his son William find themselves in the wilds of southeastern Georgia, fighting off rain, hunger and mosquitos, in order to find the rare and beautiful Franklin Tree (Franklinia alatamaha)? Come hear the story about why this tree at Bartram's Garden symbolizes the spirit of science and discovery. For the latest Scots Whay Hae! podcast Ali spoke to previous guest, the writer Graeme Macrae Burnet, to hear all about his latest novel A Case Of Matricide, which is the final book in the Georges Gorski trilogy (all published on the Contraband imprint of Saraband), which are described as "a series of novels set in the unremarkable French town of Saint-Louis", but to say there is so much more is the biggest understatement. Before giving a brief synopsis of A Case Of Matricide Graeme talks about the trilogy as a whole and how it came about, creating the character of Georges Gorski, and how the latest novel relates to the other two. Carefully avoiding spoilers, the two then discuss the nature of the trilogy, crime novels where the crimes are not to the fore, the perils of using - and mildly abusing - a real place in the shape of Saint-Louis, telling a story through small details, and the themes they address. They also talk about the influence of 20th century European literature, naturalism versus existentialism, and the different levels to writing, and therefore reading, A Case Of Matricide. It's always a treat to talk to Graeme, one of Scots Whay Hae!'s favourite writers, someone who is always interesting in terms of how he works and why. If you are unaware of his writing, or are only familiar with his Booker-listed His Bloody Project and Case Study, then this is the perfect place to find out more, and discover the Georges Gorski Trilogy. God lytting!

Carta de Akira Kurosawa a Ingmar Bergman

Epistolar

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 14, 2022 4:40

Me refiero a Ingmar Bergman y Akira Kurosawa.

The rebellious son of a Lutheran pastor, he worked in the theatre before directing his first film, Crisis (1945). He won international acclaim for his films The Seventh Seal (1957) and Wild Strawberries (1957). He assembled a group of actors, including Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann, and a cinematographer, Sven Nykvist, with whom he made powerful films often marked by bleak depictions of human loneliness, including Through a Glass Darkly (1961), Cries and Whispers (1972), Autumn Sonata (1978), and Fanny and Alexander (1982). Bergman later wrote screenplays for The Best Intentions (1992) and Private Confessions (1996). He directed a number of television movies, most notably Saraband (2003), which received a theatrical release. Throughout his career Bergman continued to direct stage productions, usually at Stockholm's Royal Dramatic Theatre. From https://www.britannica.com/summary/Ingmar-Bergman. For more information about Ingmar Bergman:“Ingmar Bergman”: https://www.ingmarbergman.se/en/ingmar-bergman-filmmaker“Ingmar Bergman: 10 Essential Films”: https://www.bfi.org.uk/lists/ingmar-bergman-10-essential-films“Ingmar Bergman, Master Filmmaker, Dies at 89”: https://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/30/movies/30cnd-bergman.html

...in which we take a springtime stroll from Langwathby to Lazonby in the company of author Stan Abbot to track the route of the Carlisle-Settle line, one of Britain's most treasured railways. As we stroll, through sandstone villages immersed in birdsong, into age-old alder carr and over busy becks, we learn about the navvy construction of this most iconic of lines, and of the Blea Moor shantytowns in which drunkenness and disease ran rife; we relish the pastural loveliness of backwater Eden; we consider a perfect Lakeland day in Newlands; we discuss the six-year campaign that saved the railway – alongside Michael Portillo's ambiguous role in it; and, arriving at Long Meg and her Daughters, one of the UK's oldest stone circles, a poetic Mark ponders 'the enormity of time and our quiet little place in it'. You can buy Stan's book Walking the Line from Saraband. His new book (out in April) is Ring of Stone Circles, also published by Saraband.

For the latest SWH! podcast Ali spoke to writer, and returning guest, Graeme Macrae Burnet about his latest novel 'Case Study' (published by Saraband). As with all of Graeme's books there's a lot to discuss, and the conversation turns to the life and work of R.D. Laing, the importance of research, the structure of the novel, how Graeme approaches writing, the excitement of writing a controversial character, the common threads which run though his fiction, the appeal of the cultural movements of the 1960s, and a whole lot more. They also discuss the cult of the author and the affect that has on the way books are marketed and received, and perhaps on the reader as well. It's always great to have Graeme on the podcast, and it was such a pleasure to be able to catch up with him in real life. The result is an insightful and entertaining interview which will give you a taste of what is undoubtedly one of the best books of the year.

Opening Song:  “Can the Dead Rise Up To Praise?” by Bifrost Arts Lyrics: O God of my salvation, do you not hear? My soul is full of trouble and death is near. You sunk me to the bottom among the dead. Your wrath is heavy on me; I have no friend. Can the dead rise up to praise, Sing of mercy from the grave? Is Your faithfulness proclaimed Even in the darkest place? I cry in prayer before You; You hide Your face. Your wrath has overwhelmed me and I can't Escape. Your terrors have destroyed me; they flood the day. All those who ever loved me are far away. Passage:  1 After the death of Saul, when David had returned from striking down the Amalekites, David remained two days in Ziklag.  (2 Samuel 1:1) David's Lament for Saul and Jonathan 17 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and Jonathan his son, 18 and he said it[a] should be taught to the people of Judah; behold, it is written in the Book of Jashar.[b] He said: 19 “Your glory, O Israel, is slain on your high places!     How the mighty have fallen! 20 Tell it not in Gath,     publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,     lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult. 21 “You mountains of Gilboa,     let there be no dew or rain upon you,     nor fields of offerings![c] For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,     the shield of Saul, not anointed with oil. 22 “From the blood of the slain,     from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back,     and the sword of Saul returned not empty. 23 “Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely!     In life and in death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles;     they were stronger than lions. 24 “You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,     who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet,     who put ornaments of gold on your apparel. 25 “How the mighty have fallen     in the midst of the battle! “Jonathan lies slain on your high places. 26     I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant have you been to me;     your love to me was extraordinary,     surpassing the love of women. 27 “How the mighty have fallen,     and the weapons of war perished!” (2 Samuel 1:17-27) Musical Reflection:  Suite in D Minor, HWV 437: III. Saraband by G.F. Handel Reflection Notes:  Today's classical reflection is a sarabande: a slow, stately dance popular during the Baroque period. The halting stops and starts here conjure up images of a funeral procession, particularly with the string players' heavy emphasis.  Prayer:  Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Calling all Galanthophiles, this week Alan Gray (a self-confessed Snowdrop addict) and Thordis (doing her best to resist!) are joined by two gardeners who long ago succumbed to Galanthamania. Award-winning Garden Writer, Val Bourne, shares her experiences of growing Snowdrops in the Cotswolds, while Brian Ellis, who sells many special varieties of Galanthus talks from the Norfolk perspective. The conversation winds from the extraordinary people who make the Snowdrop community so special, to the varieties Val and Brian hold most dear. And while the gang didn't get to mention all the things they wanted to, there's certainly no shortage of specatular Snowdrops to set your heart racing. Gunnar D. Hansson Diktsamling: "Dikter i juli" (1955) omtryckt i Vem vänder i ljus mitt mörker.Samlade dikter (Norstedts, 2020) MUSIK Eugène Ysaÿe: Saraband ur Soloviolinsonat nr 4 e-moll EXEKUTÖR Alina Ibragimova, violin

For the latest podcast Ali spoke to author, poet, and academic Mandy Haggith about 'The Lyre Dancers', the third and final novel of the Stone Stories Trilogy, which was recently published with Saraband Books. Mandy talks about the historical origins of the trilogy, the incredible story of Pytheas, what inspired the books, why they were always going to be set in the Iron Age, and the importance of character. The two also discuss the themes across all three novels and their relevance to the present day, and why, if you want to get a different perspective of the land, you should get on the water. It's an utterly fascinating conversation about one of the most gripping series of recent times and we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we did recording it.

Wait, you thought we were done with the adventures of Johan and Marianne? Didn’t you watch the final episode of Scenes from a Marriage? That was clearly way too optimistic, am I right? So, roughly thirty years (and some weird in-universe aging shenanigans) later, how do you think our (un)happy couple is doing? Let’s find out in Ingmar Bergman’s final film: Saraband.

For the latest podcast Ali met up with the American novelist Andy Davidson before his event at The Edinburgh International Book Festival. In an ironically dreich Charlotte Square the two discuss Andy's terrific debut novel 'In The Valley Of The Sun' which is out now on the Contraband imprint of Saraband books, and which is one of the best of the year so far. It's a fascinating chat about influences and ideas, genre fiction vs literary fiction, horror writers and films, the importance of character, and why, in terms of writing, there really is no place like home. They also talk about the differences in publishing in the US as opposed to the UK. For anyone with an interest in writing, or reading, it's a must listen.

In our Burnscast for 2017, Ali and Ian travelled to the heart of Burns' country in Ayrshire to talk to the writer Catherine Czerkawska about her novel, 'The Jewel', which examines Burns relationship with his wife Jean Armour, from Jean's point of view. It is a story rarely told, and what follows is an hour of fascinating chat about Jean and Robert which focuses on the reality of family life rather than in the mythology which surrounded, and continues to attach itself to, Burns. There's also a little bit of poetry. It is Burns Night after all.

Chauvon, Francois: Cinquieme Suite Rebel, Jean-Fery: Selections from Ulysse: Suffriray-je toujours; Saraband; Beaux lieux, vous ne scauriez me plaire Bourgeois, Thomas-Louis: Les Sirenes Homer’s Odyssey is one of the most famous stories in human history. On this podcast, with French Baroque ensemble Les Délices as our guide, we’ll explore the timeless tale through music. Our podcast starts with a work not literally modeled on the Odyssey—Francois Chauvon’s fifth suite. But, as Nagy argues in her smart program notes, this music has a magical quality that listeners might easily hear as evoking the years that Odysseus spent under the spell of the goddess Calypso. After the instrumental suite, we’ll hear a series of vocal works, for which Les Délices is joined by soprano Clara Rottsalk. We start with excerpts by Jean-Fery Rebel’s little-known opera Ulysse. We close the program with another vocal piece inspired by Odysseus: Thomas-Louis Bourgeois’ Les Sirenes. It is—as it sounds—a portrayal of the seductive singing of the Sirens, who try to lure Odysseus and his crew into harm’s way. Fortunately for our hero, their beguiling music is ultimately unsuccessful, and he continues on his journey unscathed.

Libby Purves meets Emma O'Reilly, the woman who blew the whistle on Lance Armstrong; artist Joshua Sofaer; writer and performer Danny Braverman and dragonfly expert Ruary Mackenzie Dodds. Artist Joshua Sofaer is the man behind The Rubbish Collection, an exhibition at the Science Museum. Part of the museum's Climate Changing programme - a series of events and exhibitions that support its Atmosphere gallery - the exhibition takes a month's worth of the museum's rubbish and looks at the value and volume of what's discarded. The Rubbish Collection is at the Science Museum. Emma O'Reilly worked as a soigneur for the US Postal professional cycling team from the mid-1990s. Confronted by a doping culture she despised, she resigned in 2000 and began to speak out about what was happening in the sport. After breaking cycling's code of silence, she was shunned by the sport and endured a decade of personal attacks, broken relationships and the threat of bankruptcy. Her book, The Race to Truth - Blowing the whistle on Lance Armstrong and cycling's doping culture - is published by Bantam Press. Writer and performer Danny Braverman inherited a shoebox stuffed with thousands of scraps of paper which provided a unique record of 20th century London and Jewish life. From the 1920s to the 1980s Danny's great uncle, Ab Solomons, drew comical and heartfelt pictures on his weekly wage packets before giving them to his wife, Celie. Danny's show, Wot? No Fish!!, invites the audience to discover the history and inner workings of the Solomons family. Wot? No Fish!! is at the Battersea Arts Centre. Ruary Mackenzie Dodds is a writer and dragonfly expert. In 1985 a dragonfly landed on his shirt which became the catalyst for a lifelong obsession with protecting them. In his book, The Dragonfly Diaries, he shares his fascination for these striking creatures and the ups and downs of establishing Britain's first public dragonfly sanctuary. The Dragonfly Diaries is published by Saraband. Producer: Paula McGinley.
