Many financial services businesses deploy external intermediaries in one form or another. These B2B (business to business) relationships are typically between the financial institution and external salespeople, advisors, agents, brokers, wholesalers and such like.   In many cases, these businesses are then selling to other businesses, rather than the end consumer. Unfortunately, it can be easy to overlook people who don't work directly for your firm, because you may not ‘see' or have regular contact with them. However, as an extension of your firm, they represent your brand, products, and services. More importantly, their success has a significant impact on the success of your firm during challenging economic times. Mary DeBisschop and Jeff Repace, Senior Vice Presidents in our Ipsos US Customer Experience team, have recently published a paper called ‘Why empowering intermediaries can help financial services companies in a challenging economy'.  They join us on our Customer Perspective podcast to talk about helping businesses understand what it takes to maintain successful B2B relationships with their intermediaries. Ulrich Riedel and Will Bachman discuss Ulrich's unique cold lead generation process via LinkedIn. Ulrich advises to respect the leads and to be careful to select only candidates who would benefit from this process and to be careful not to spam. He shares why he chose to find leads this way and explains why  there is more upside than downside to his process. He explains that the process involves several aspects such as researching the prospects, creating a message, and following up. He also suggests focusing on building relationships and emphasizing the value of the offer. Finally, he stresses the importance of tracking results and being persistent. Using LinkedIn Sales Navigator to Contact Leads Ulrich offers three pieces of advice on how to use LinkedIn Sales Navigator to reach out to potential leads. He stresses the importance of your investment in time and money investments to ensure the leads are super targeted, as sourcing too many leads that do not fit the needs of the company will be a waste of the time and money invested. He emphasizes that real expertise and external help are needed to set up the process.  Hiring an Expert in Lead Generation Ulrich discusses how he hired an expert to help him with his lead generation process. The expert used a Sales Navigator, which is a powerful search tool, to look for leads and contacts, and then organize them in groups and tag them to make sure none were duplicated. Ulrich created the messaging, but they were responsible for sending out initial connection requests and any follow-up messages. Once a prospect accepted and engaged, the expert would set up a call in the prospect's calendar and then hand the contact over to Ulrich to handle. Ultimately, the expert helped Ulrich to find, organize, and contact the leads, which saved him time. He talks about his direct and concise communication technique that helps him build a connection with suitable prospects.  Reaching the Right People through LinkedIn Sales Navigator Ulrich helps reduce implementation risk and increase project value for large complex projects and strategies. He has been doing this since 2004 and has found that his initial connection requests were not reaching the right people. He now targets Senior Vice Presidents and above in companies with $3 billion or more in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. His current connection requests are clear and direct, stating his goal to reduce risk and increase project value followed by an offer to explain how he would achieve this for the person he is reaching out to. Once he has secured a lead, Ulrich transfers the client from LinkedIn Navigator to his own CRM system to keep track of communications, campaigns, and status etc. He explains how and when he makes first contact, how he follows up with them, often using GetEmail and RocketReach to find emails of his clients, and how he schedules meetings.  Most importantly, Ulrich focuses on authentic and respectful communication. He stresses the importance of patience and persistence, and that following up with clients on a regular basis to remind them of the benefits they will receive from Ulrich's expertise pays off. He finds that out of 100 connection requests sent, usually 20 will connect. He sends the 20 a longer message and roughly five will reply. Out of five, he will secure one client. Ulrich shares when and how he follows up with the other potential clients. He checks his CRM system daily and explains why he uses Outlook Contact instead of Hubspot. Better Today Than Yesterday (BTTY) Podcast

MADE FOR LISTENING - Don't miss out. TRANSCRIPTOver the last year, we have been searching for several senior executives to join our team. While we have an extraordinary team, we have bumped into resource constraints. Said plainly, we don't have enough time. The business doubled, the team tripled, and the caffeine intake quadrupled. Whenever I spoke to a prospective candidate, I would find myself saying we need additional ‘executive capacity.' Given my disdain for buzzwords, an internal voice would come over the PA and say, “You need to be clear, Kelly. What the heck is executive capacity anyways?” Throughout those searches, I formed my perspective and thought I'd share how I describe executive capacity and, by extension, what it means to be an executive. Titles, positions, and more buzzwordiness. Organizations have managers, directors, Vice Presidents, Senior Vice Presidents, Executive Vice Presidents, and Senior Executive Vice Presidents - phew. That's a lot. But wait, there are more. There are CEOs, CIOs, COOs, CTOs, CDOs, CMOs, CLOs, CPOs, and CAOs. There are two CAOs - accounting and administration. There are even CHOs - Chief Happiness Officers. No, really. It's a thing. I'm missing some Cs, Vs, and who knows what else. I loathe titles but recognize their usefulness in providing clarity - maybe. Along with all of these titles, we have managers and leaders. With no shortage of answers in the world describing the difference between those, I'll leave it to the google machine to answer that fully. Because I believe executives must be both managers and leaders, I want to share my thoughts on the differences quickly. Management = head focused Leader = heart focused Executive Capacity - what the heck?Like being a leader, a title does not grant you entrance into Executiveville. This is about capability and capacity. Executives are:Vertical expertsHorizontally connectedCalm and calmingClarifiersSimplifiersNow let's dive into each one. Vertical ExpertsDeep functional expertise allows executives to go” vertical” They know their functional area (finance, marketing, etc.) better than most. They can go deep and get down into the weeds, or they can go very high and paint a vision related to their functional area. Horizontally ConnectedWhile they are world-class vertically, they know enough to pick their head up out of their functional silo and look left and right. They understand the adjacent verticals enough to think through the issues and opportunities. They are dot connectors. They are capable of bringing disparate ideas, functions, and people together. Additionally, they recognize that they play a role in a larger group. As an executive, they must fight against creating silos of excellence and fiefdoms. They are particularly passionate about NOT weaponizing of power, information, or title. Calm & CalmingA tremendous amount falls on these leaders' shoulders- the organization's requirements, the emergencies, and the needs of their humans. Generally, their choices range from horrible to cataclysmic. It can feel like a front-end loader is constantly dumping massive rocks into their rucksack of responsibility. Executives have a superpower - they respond, not react. They handle stress and pressure while maintaining composure. Over their career, they have faced issue after issue, and ultimately it all works out - one way or another. Most importantly, they know what to do when faced with tough situations or decisions. For me, when the pressure is at its highest, I have five things I try to remember. I might not always be successful, but I give it my best. 1. Focus on what I can control 2. Stay positive 3. Stay consistent but flexible 4. Communicate constantly 5. Don't forget the missionThey know they must manage their psychology and put their oxygen masks on before helping others. ClarityAs the pressure mounts, executives work to see what is happening. They want to understand reality, not perceptions. They seek clarity of thought, communication, and priorities. They work to slow down, even stop, to assess the situation. They know the fog of war has an astonishing ability to enable bad decisions. They work to let the water settle so they can see the bottom clearly. Maintaining internal clarity is crucial. It's impossible to be clear with the team if you can't see clearly inside yourself. Clarity allows them to quickly work with their teams to take the rocks in their rucksack and redistribute them. Either to other teammates or, better yet, toss them out entirely and leave them on the side of the road. While it can be frustrating to those around them, they also try to make decisions as late as possible. The answer is often clear, but they don't make decisions until they must. This provides more time for more information and to let things develop. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. I love this from Peter Drucker“There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all.”If you haven't read the Effective Executive, I highly recommend it. I will share my highlights in the notes below. Simplify, Simplify, SimplifyGiven the complexities of the modern world and the fact that humans are infinitely complex, executives must simplify, simplify, and simplify more. Simple in ideas and communication.Executives must chip away all the noise to help everyone understand what is happening and what we must do next. There is nothing easy about that, and it takes time. To be clear, simple is hard. In 1857 Henry David Thoreau wrote a letter to a friend and commented on the difficulty of simplifying. Not that the story need be long, but it will take a long while to make it short.Takeaways about ExecutivesFunctional (vertical) expertsHorizontal dot connectors while constantly breaking down silosThey are calm - they respond, not reactClarity: ABC - Always Be ClarifyingSimplicity is hard - when you think it's simple, make it 50% simpler. I hope you found this helpful. And if you did, please share it with someone, tap like, or leave a comment. Take care out there. Credits This is a public episode. SummaryHadi Partovi was one of the original 9 people on the Internet Explorer project. He left Microsoft in the late 90s to found Tellme Networks, which was eventually acquired by Microsoft for $800 million dollars. This precipitated a second stint at Microsoft where he was General Manager of MSN.com during MSN’s only year of profit, and where he incubated Start.com (which became Live.com, which now points to Microsofts’ online Outlook efforts). After leaving Microsoft a second time, he joined up with his brother Ari to found iLike, which was purchased by Myspace, and both Partovi brothers worked for a time as Senior Vice Presidents at Myspace. In between all this, Hadi and Ari were early investors in Zappos, Facebook and Dropbox, served as advisors to Facebook and still serve as advisors to Dropbox. Hadi is currently the founder and CEO of Code.org, a non-profit working to help schools teach coding to students around the world. Here is a link to a recent interview with both Partovi brothers. The post page for this episode is here. Chereace Richards - In 2006, I was introduced to 5LINX. Having no prior direct sales experience, the opportunity filled a void in my life and forced me to challenge myself like never before.   Giving all credit and acknowledgement to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, my success with 5LINX has been constant and rather extraordinary. My husband, who also left his full time job as a bus operator, and I have built a flourishing business that is rewarding on many levels. In just 14 months, we were named Senior Vice Presidents, moving up to Double Platinum SVP status in just 47 months. The We have also consistently ranked #1 as Platinum SVPs and our team has regularly places at the #1 and #2 spots in production, company-wide. I have found my passion,  travelling the world, teaching others, especially women, how to be successful, and to embrace their passion. Janiell Vashon - I am proud to call myself a "Professional Network Marketer." I have a passion for this industry and a desire to help empower women, to give them hope and the knowledge that they do have Choices and they Can do this and find success if they have the desire. When I started in this industry 22 years ago I was looking for a little extra spending $ and a "Plan B." Something to help me with my personal growth & development. Little did I expect my "Plan B" to become my "Plan A" 4 or  5 years later when my I lost my husband to cancer at 48, two of our five children were still at home. As devastating as it was to lose my sweetheart, financially my family and I were alright. That's when I learned the true meaning of residual income. Those months and years when I was home where I wanted and needed to be, that check was in my mail box every week.  I often think... what other business could I've started that would have benefited me so...only network marketing.
