This episode is a little departure from our physical bodies.. I wanted to interview Shannon McLay, founder and CEO of Financial Gym. Financial Gym is a completely unique company that I wish existed when I first opened my business. FinGym aims to help people become 'financially fit' no matter their income or current debt. Personally, I am incredibly grateful for the support I've received from FinGym and because so many of us struggle with our relationship to money, just as we do with food or our bodies ...and these struggles are actually so often inter-connected.. Shannon McLay is on a mission to clean up the dirty end of the financial planning pool. The Financial Gym founder has seen it all - advisors offering whole life policies to young savers with no children, and people just beginning saving thrown into annuities over a 401k at work. Today we talk about what to look out for in the financial world, how some of the popular buzzwords like "fiduciary" won't help you much anymore, and what to ask a potential advisor so that you know you're headed in the right direction. Before that we share a big headline about the Chinese stock market. Things haven't been going well in China, while the US market is roaring. Is it time to maybe look overseas with some of your money? How do you think holistically about buying low? We also share a TikTok minute sharing a new way to look at student loans. But of course, that's not all. Doug throws out a great trivia question and we take an interesting call from a Stacker in need. FIVE great topics on today's episode! On this episode of Financially Naked: Stories from The Financial Gym, Shannon McLay, our Founder and CEO is hosting! To celebrate this 100 episode milestone, she is joined by Certified Financial Trainers, Kadri Auguston and Victoria Sechrist. In the almost two years of recording this show, Victoria and Kadri have been the hosts of over 25% of all the time. Today, the trio sits down to answer listener questions, chat about favorite episodes, and discuss what is so special about recording this show and working at the Gym. Shannon has recorded over 400 episodes of her award-winning podcast, Martinis and Your Money. In that time. topics directly related to the Gym have been an aspect of the show. It became clear there were enough stories for a separate show entirely. Which is when Financially Naked was born. 100 episodes later, here we are! The name, Financially Naked comes from the first session you have with a trainer at the Gym. During these sessions, we have vulnerable conversations and connect on an emotional level. It is a regular part of what we do on this show and as trainers. Podcast Notes Podcast episodes are a fun way to learn more about your clients and colleagues than you ever have before. The client base at the Gym is diverse in age, income levels, and backgrounds. They have so many things going on in their lives and hearing the stories is a pleasure. On this podcast, 23 episodes feature clients! Many episodes are inspired by conversations between trainers, their clients and each other. PARTS OF THE JOB Trainers are financial historians. It can be hard to see the progress when it feels slow, but your trainers know. They see it and are there to remind you of that amazing work. Clients at the Gym are the bravest people out there. People ask, “Am I your worst client?” or “Is it bad?” Shannon says ‘the worst' client is not a member of the Gym. If you're here, showing up, you are doing a brave thing. People think they're alone in their struggles, but over 70% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. It's important to recognize other folks are going through it too and to be gentle with yourself. The hardest part is showing up, especially when it's not going well. If you keep showing up, you'll get the results. It's great to look back and remind clients where they were, just a year ago. Seeing the mindset shift is huge. Encouraging self-compassion is a huge aspect of financial training. Reminding people it's okay to give themselves a break. Also giving credit for the victories like staying out of credit card debt, not adding more debt, or having a cushion in place. Everything you do is financially fixable. We can deal with the finances. It's just numbers. Trainers are detectives, looking for what Kadri calls the ‘cashflow boogeyman' When there's a gap between earning and spending and you have to find creative ways to close it. You may not remember what you spent money on months ago, but it becomes part of your timeline. Your choices in the moment matter and small things can add up quickly. This is a really eye-opening journey for some clients. It is fun to help them confront the Boogeyman and see the lightbulb moments along the way, THE POWER OF EXPENSE REPORTS At the early stages, clients go through the spending exercises. The spending reports from the Training Zone are a powerful tool. When trainers go through them at the Gym with clients, there is no judgement. They are a conversation starter and provide surprising information for both client and trainer. It helps folks figure out where their money is going. It's one step on the personal finance journey. Some clients graduate from expense reviews, but occasionally want to bring it back for a refresh. It's a great tool in that way. Kadri will go line by line with clients and instead of focusing on the number, ask questions like, “What was that purchase?' “Who was that meal with?” “Did it bring you joy?” to help change the relationship with spending. It's about making room for the things clients want to do. You can have fun AND be financially healthy. Jim interviews Shannon McLay, founder of The Financial Gym, about her career and advice for frugal-minded people.
Shannon McLay is the founder of The Financial Gym, an organization that offers financial coaching services on a monthly subscription basis to 3,500 Millennial and Gen-Z clients. Shannon has positioned her offerings in a similar way to personal trainers, helping people get “financially fit” through traditional financial planning services like budgeting, savings, debt management, and financial literacy. Listen in as we dive into the “aha” moment that led Shannon to launch The Financial Gym, how she convinced initial investors to buy into her business, and why she feels that an important benefit of the monthly subscription model is the accountability it places on her coaches to show value to clients. She also shares why she ditched an off-the-shelf software package and developed her own proprietary budgeting tool for clients, the lessons she learned through that development process, and why she has been able to build a diverse and inclusive team of coaches who can relate to clients in a really unique way. The number of women I get to speak with who are tackling different businesses and brands continues to amaze me! Today's guest, Shannon McLay, is the founder of The Financial Gym, which provides you with a personal financial trainer to put you in control of your finances, one step at a time. Shannon starts by telling me how she was living life according to plan, checking all the boxes and making money, when she realized that she wasn't really happy or enjoying what she was doing. What Shannon did next is pretty bold -- she continued working her 9-5 at Merrill Lynch while taking on (what she called) pro bono clients that didn't meet her financial threshold but needed real help. This is what brought her to life! She started the The Financial Gym slowly, mainly working off referrals and building her team accordingly. Shannon and I jump into some personal development pieces that I LOVED -- my favorite being when she puts herself in time out and how she curates her social media. She also gives us insight into her schedule and when she forces herself to take off. We finish with her breaking down what The Financial Gym is and the three types of clients they service. Shannon has such a great story of someone who found her passion and continued to forge the path to make it a business. Whether you have your finances in a spreadsheet or have no idea what you are doing, this episode and The Financial Gym can help! Make sure to check out their site, Instagram and Shannon's podcast. After years of working for a big bank including working as a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch, she was inspired to create a financial services company that actually cared for its clients and provided them the services they needed. Most financial services companies only care about you as far as they can sell you products like investments, bank accounts, credit cards, loans and insurance policies. They also want to give you technology and apps to solve your financial problems; however, something we know at the Financial Gym is that money is personal and people aren’t algorithms. Anyone can put together a financial plan, but how many people actually follow it and stick with it?In our podcast we discuss about the importance of financial literacy and ways of gaining literacy. Shannon McLay is the Founder and CEO of Financial Gym. Shannon never had a career as an entrepreneur in her life plan. Starting from when she was 14, she had one thing on her mind – making money. She started working in investment banking out of college and used to tell everyone, “I'm not changing the world, I'm just making money.” When she hit 30, she started questioning her purpose and realized she didn't have a great answer for herself. As she started looking for a financial advisor of her own, she realized they all looked and felt the same. After becoming a financial advisor herself and realizing she was spending more time helping people pro-bono than the clients she was paid to advise (with over $250K in assets), she knew there was an unmet need. That's when she got the idea for Financial Gym.At Financial Gym, Shannon and her team are chasing a noble mission – to change the financial health of this and future generations. They work with over 3,000 clients remotely across all 50 states as well as in their 4 physical locations. They have a diverse client base, ranging from 17 to 74 years old across all levels of financial health and think of themselves like a regular gym but for your money. This was an inspiring interview that helped break down the big scary monster that is financial health and taught me a bunch of things I should be doing to improve my own. Today's episode is all about financial health. When today's guest approached me asking me to be on the show I hesitated and asked myself is money related to wellness at all? In the end I definitely believe it is. My personal belief is that money is an energy. Its not inherently good or evil, it's a tool that we can use to amplify ourselves. I'm a believer that if you're a generous, positive person with good intentions money can just help you do the things and give and be more of that awesome energy. The same goes for if you're a dickhead. Obviously there's a million things we could dive into with money but today we kept it pretty simple. This episode is especially geared towards folks who are in their twenties and early thirties, but heck anyone who just wants to feel a little more empowered and in control. Just like with your wellness and health there's no one right answer with how to manage your money. If you're listening and don't agree with everything my guest says that's absolutely ok. We all have a right and ability to manage our money in a way that works for us. I also wanted to note that if any of the diet related metaphors don't work or resonate with you I totally get that. Some of them didn't really land with me but I was able to understand the point she was making and the money advice was still great. So just because maybe a certain metaphor doesn't click - you can still listen to and enjoy the financial side of things. What I really loved is that Shannon is not black and white about money. She knows that everyone thinks and manages things differently which is what really helped me get a lot of benefit from this advice. I loved how she didn't say there's just one way to do everything. We Talk About: How to have a positive mindset around money Why a lot of financial advice is geared towards “perfection” and isn't realistic Fear & Shame are some of the most common themes when it comes to money Limiting beliefs around money When it's the right time to see a person instead of using an app Why money is one of the final taboos Why “money is not important to me” should be cut out of your vocabulary Shannon's belief why no one should feel bad about not understanding money What are some of the biggest myths that people still believe about money Why long term savings is like a cross country road trip Start with short and medium term goals first Why Shannon believes you save and pay off debt at the same time Why financial planning is not one size fits all Shannon's tip for recent college grads - set up auto saving behaviors Tips for saving for your first house Savings Tips First step is to save 6 months of emergency savings Second step is to save for your first big medium term goal Where to start saving after you're done paying off debt How financial control relieves major stress in your life Tips for saving money in college - prioritize 1 or 2 areas of spending why expense tracking isn't for everyone How to get started with IRA's and retirement savings Work with an accountant to figure our what's best because retirement has a lot to do with taxes Shannon's biggest piece of advice when you're just getting started Resources Shannon Mentions Financial Diet Youtube Ally Savings Bank Investment Tools Bettermint Wellfront DriveWealth Practice investing Motif Investing (portfolios with themes) Different Types of Budgeting goals based budgeting cash diet expense tracking zero sum budgeting Types of IRA's for business owners simple IRA SEP IRA 401k Connect with Shannon Financial Gym Blog Podcast: Martinis and Your Money On Instagram
