Episode #199: Following a period of rebellion and exploration through the tumultuous 1960s, Michael Stein embarked on a journey that ultimately led him to a profound spiritual connection with S.N. Goenka. Winding his way through Israel, Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan, he reached India just before the 1971 war with Pakistan. Michael had a deep sense of belonging the moment he crossed the border. At first, his main interests were dope smoking and travel, though the pull of spiritual practice was always in the background. Financial constraints forced him to return to the U.S. briefly to make some money before going back to India, where he sat his first vipassana course with S.N. Goenka in Dalhousie. India in the early 1970s offered a smorgasbord of great, spiritual teachers—Ram Dass, Neem Karoli Baba, Sai Baba, and Kalu Rinpoche, and Munindra among others. Michael became part of a close group of international seekers, including Joseph Goldstein, Jack Kornfield, Daniel Goleman, and Sharon Salzburg, forming lifelong personal and Dhamma friendships. Michael spent time with several of them, but felt his personal path was the practice as taught by Goenka. As that group of friends and seekers drifted apart in the mid-1970s, most returned to their home countries, bringing those vipassana teachings with them. Western teachers like Joseph Goldstein, Robert Hover and John Coleman started teaching meditation across the world at that time as well, and a further pivotal moment came when Goenka expanded his teachings outside of India.Michael played a key role in disseminating vipassana practice in the US. He managed many of Joseph Goldstein's early courses, as well as some courses taught by Robert Hover. He was instrumental in helping start the International Meditation Society (IMS) in Barre, Massachusetts, and then in helping Goenka establish his first U.S. center, Dhamma Dhara, in nearby in Shelburne Falls. For Michael, Goenka's legacy can ultimately be summarized by what he accomplished. “He wanted people to be able to meditate, he wanted people to learn this technique, and you have to surrender your life towards doing these things,” he says in closing. “That's the gratitude I have, because I can't tell you how much it's helped me in my life. I was pretty messed up! I've gone through quite a bit over the years, and whatever came my way, I was not perfect in it, but I had the Dhamma and I kept my sīla, and I got through everything.”

I have kinda created and shared my own practice in this episode combing all of the things I have learned and loved over the years. ooh and although it still feels a wee bit vulnerable, I am finally starting to get used to talking to myself out loud into a microphone. If its your first time trying a guided relaxation/love and kindness practice it may feel strange- but its soo worth trying. Give yourself 20 mins. Carve out time, listen to it alone of with someone else, listen to your body and see how you feel after. It might be really nice to try before bed, but also anytime during the day when you want to check-in and relax.Resources mentioned:Jack Cornfield- A Path with Heart. Why do we keep doing things that cause suffering in our lives? Usually, it's because those destructive habits temporarily provide us with comfort, even though they don't serve our long-term wellbeing. When we practice letting go of destructive habits or thoughts, there is often a fear of losing the temporary relief that those thoughts and behaviors provide. In letting go, it requires that we practice resting in the faith of our spiritual practice- the faith to persevere through the discomfort and into the liberation that comes from letting go of things that no longer serve our happiness.

For our 34th episode, I sat down with Sharon Salzburg. Sharon is a world renowned meditation teacher. We’ve never met in person but I follow her work. I listen to her podcast, The Metta Hour and I’ve been reading her book Real Love, The Art of Mindful Connection. Although the book has been out for a while now, love has always been a difficult concept for me to fully grasp and this book was full of ah-ha moments, of explanations and ways of putting things I could really relate to. It gave me hope and tools for the future, so I thought it would be a great subject for us to tackle today.5 BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS OF THIS EPISODE1. Love is not a feeling it's an ability we all have to connect deeply to ourselves and others. The love you experience is in your own hands, it's inside you, it's yours to tend.2. Loving kindness is the antidote to fear and mindfulness gives us the ability to understand our emotions and the space to experience and move through them.3. It's correct to want to be happy. Everybody wants to be happy. Don't be ashamed of that quest. Our beliefs, our conditioning and our habits either enhance or hinder our ability to be happy.4. The ability to see and the willingness to be seen is the key to having loving relationships with others.5. You cannot fail at meditation. Your goal is not to make your mind blank or keep certain experiences from happening, our goal is to change the relationship we have to each of these experiences. Meditation is a resilience training. We learn to constantly begin again.QUESTIONS SHE ANSWERED DURING THE EPISODE :Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey to meditation? What is Loving Kindness vs Mindfulness and why you chose to focus your teachings on these practices instead of any other types of meditations? Why did you choose to write a book about love. What is real love? How did these practices change your life? What are the mistakes we do that keep us from genuine happiness? How do we avoid them? How can we use mindfulness as a tool to move towards it?Why is it so hard to love ourselves? How does self-love or a lack of affect how we show up in the world and how we enter in relationships? What’s the importance to understand our inter-connectivity with the world around us?In the book you talk about the concept of you-me-and the space in between. What’s in that space? Why should we care about it?How do assumptions tint our capacity to be open, to listen and be in relationship with others? How can we cultivate a Love that is more an unconditional, sustainable ability, rather than a fleeting feeling. What’s your hope for the future of meditation in this country? What do you say to people that say they can’t meditate?SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!GIVEAWAY WINNER. Eric battled his former problem of addiction with meditation. Here, we talk about the way we both use meditation and our experiences. As a practice, meditation is so open to interpretation, so this episode may give you a new perspective on what meditation can do. With much experience under his belt, Eric Zimmer has interviewed hundreds of guests on his own podcast and has had the privelege of meeting the likes of Sharon Salzburg, Lama Surya Das, and many other amazing human beings. He is well-renowned for his TedX talk called The Battle of Changing Your Behavior and now runs The One You Feed Podcast, named one of the “Best Podcasts of 2014” by iTunes and also named one of the "Best Health Podcasts of All Time" by the Huffington Post.

Happy Valentine's Day! And welcome to Design Yourself's new release day, Thursday! (If you are wondering why we moved from Mondays to Thursdays, go check out last week's episode where I dish on this shift.) This week's episode talks about two seemingly distinct topics: love and leadership. How many times have you considered the role of love at work? For many of us the topic is taboo. In today's episode, Sharon talks about the importance of leading with love. She shares vignettes of how she has seen leaders and teams transform with this approach and offers four key actions on how you can lead with love. She closes things out with a short meditation to get you in the practice of growing and embodying love. Enjoy! Ideas Shared 4 Actions to Lead with Love Radical Self Awareness - Start by noticing what emotion shows up when you lead. Are you calm or anxious? Delighted or frustrated? Angry or sad? Simply notice without judgement what emotion/s show up when you lead. Set an Intention - Whether love is already present or not when you lead, set an intention to lead with love. Simply invite in the potential to bring love into the mix. Embody Love - Love is not just something we say or do. Love can show up in the way we are. We can embody that feeling of love in how we stand, walk, and gesture. Practice physically holding love. Grow Love - It's amazing how much we can grow or intensify the feeling of love, simply by paying attention to it.   Resources and Links Learn more about Sharon Salzburg

DINA’S JOURNEY Before turning to meditation, Dina lived in the opposite world — the whirlwind of founding a tech company which raised $35mm in venture capital money and scaled to offices internationally. The start-up was called blip.tv, a platform for original shows, somewhat similar to an early version of YouTube. Her life quickly became meetings and conferences, hiring and firing and tough decisions about strategy and scaling and managing a P&L. She figured out the “job” part of her job. What she couldn’t figure out was how to be herself in that role…how to stay true to herself, as a feminine founder, in such a male-dominated company and industry. Dina thought she had to act “like a guy” to be as successful as the male entrepreneurs she was meeting at tech events, people like Peter Thiel and Larry and Sergei from Google. She wasn’t even sure how they acted at work but decided they were probably tough and worked around the clock. So she put on a tough exterior, worked constantly, and suppressed her true self completely. Some of this worked. Dina was named a Fortune Most Powerful Women Entrepreneur, one of 10 Women of Web 2.0 by Fast Company, and she was invited to speak at conferences around the world. Life on the outside looked perfect but on the inside, it was a mess. The mess of the dichotomy between her outside world, and what was happening on the inside, led to intense panic attacks for two years, until one day she decided she needed to get healthy again. She abruptly quit her job and left to travel the world for two and a half years, never looking back. Dina reached a pivotal point during a silent retreat in India when she realized she spent her whole life trying to be popular and it wasn’t serving her. During a meditation she realized she had the power to change herself, and to choose to be authentic. In that moment she had a life changing realization — that everyone could benefit from meditation, but meditation retreats didn’t have to be this hard. (She had no soap, no toilet paper, no AC, and it was 120 degrees Fahrenheit!) At that moment, on retreat, a voice came to her and said, “When you come back to the US you’ll start a company to make meditation more mainstream, to be beautiful and full of light. And you’ll call it The Path.” WHAT IS MINDFULNESS? Mindfulness, according to Dina, is about focusing your way. And about paying attention without judgement. It’s not just “clearing your mind” or “thinking of nothing.” It is allowing your thoughts to be there but not judging them. There are Four Main Categories of Meditation Meditation can be for everyone. There are hundreds if not thousands of types of meditations to choose from, however, most fit into these main categories. Mindfulness Meditation. This is the most known in the West. It involves focusing on a single point (such as the breath). Mindfulness benefits include reducing stress and training the mind to focus. Manta Meditation This style is meditating around a “mantra” or a sanskrit word, such as “so hum.” This type of meditation ant is great at increasing creativity and also reducing stress. Energizing Meditation. Meditation can bring natural energy to the body when you incorporate breath work such as alternate nostril breathing or Kundalini work. Goal Based Meditation. Goal based meditations are used when the student wants to invite a certain aspect into his or her life, such as more compassion or gratitude. MEDITATION & BUSINESS GO HAND IN HAND As life becomes more and more stressful, meditation becomes even more important. “You should sit in meditation for 20 minutes a day, unless you are too busy, then you should sit for an hour.” -Old Zen saying Juggling work and life creates an impact on the mind, body and spirit. Meditation can help balance your business life and provide strategies for coping with the stress of it all. In addition to reducing stress, it can increase focus, happiness and overall health…leading you to show up every day as your best self. Many high-level CEOs discuss the importance of meditating. Leverage co-founder and CEO Nick Sonnenberg tells how it helps increase productivity and aids in managing ADD. While the benefits of meditation are becoming more mainstream, some people are wary of beginning… associating it with “woo-woo” practices instead of an easily accessible part of a daily routine. HOW CAN YOU START? The first step to meditation is to close your eyes, and breathe. It’s that simple. Contrary to popular belief, there’s no “wrong way” to meditate. If you are ready to take the first step with the help of a teacher, you can find a well-known teacher such as Sharon Salzburg or Jon Kabat-Zinn online and view a few of their teachings. If you’re in NY, LA, or San Fran email dina@thepath.com directly and she will help you find a local teacher. There is also the opportunity to join Sharon and Will Kabat-Zinn (Jon’s son!) this June during a meditation retreat (sponsored by The Path) designed specifically for entrepreneurs and creatives. This retreat, MELA takes place in beautiful Sedona with the theme “conscious leadership.” It is open to all levels of meditators from beginners to experienced. You’ll have the chance to unwind, meditate and mingle amongst a group of CEOs, including Leverage’s Nick Sonnenberg. If you have any questions regarding the retreat, email sit@thepath.com. One of the benefits of this faith community is the capacity to encourage us to growth in the moments when we are reaching out, and the moments when we are reaching in. In her book Real Love: The Art of Mindful Connection author and Buddhist teacher Sharon Salzburg writes, “The combination of realizing our distinctiveness along with our unity is seeing interdependence.” Let’s explore the idea of mindful connections, within and without, as we go more deeply into this months theme.
