What is it about Christian Slater? He has the charm to basically almost carry anything. Well, Kuffs is a little known action comedy from 1992 that only really survives because of the magic of our lead character. Charles picked this one and it was a light refresher into why the 90s had such a diverse group of film genres. We talk about the unexpected fashion we loved, just wonder what the hell this script was about, and take a look at the recent work of Slater and why this movie would have made a fun tv series.Off-topic rants include: my GOT watching progress, Real World: Hawaii, and I ask Charles whether or not I should start watching Scandal ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s/00s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Danielle and Galeet's father, Farid Dardashti, was born in Tehran in 1942, the oldest of Houri and Younes Dardashti's five children, all of whom had natural musical talent. Farid's gorgeous voice kept earning him invitations to perform, but his parents didn't want him to pursue music. To make them proud, he applied to study architecture in America. While waiting for his visa and acceptance to college, he got offered his own weekly show singing on Iranian TV – and he was an instant hit. He quickly became a teen idol, a rising star. But when his visa came through, he left the country as planned – and never once considered staying to grow his fame as a singer. This didn't make any sense to Danielle and Galeet. But that's because they were missing an important piece of the story. We are celebrating the most important gifts of any season: love, companionship and connection. Our guests are author Pilley Bianchi whose book, For The Love off Dog celebrates our rich canine bestie history and invites you to teach your any-age dog some new tricks. And TJ Lubinsky joins us to discuss his newest My Music Presents/PBS Special, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme: Memories of My Mom And Dad.Inspired by the work of her father John W. Pilley, the psychologist whose Border collie, Chaser, charmed the nation with his impressive understanding of language, Pilley hopes to share with you what she learned from her Dad and Chaser and inspire you to to better engage with your dog. She's written the ultimate handbook designed to teach you how to teach your dog.TJ Lubinsky is eager to tell us about his 20 year journey towards finally making the Steve and Eydie special of his dreams. Teen heartbreak led TJ to sooth his soul with the sound of Steve Lawrence and now TJ has teamed with Carol Burnett, Michael Feinstein and Steve and Eydie's son, David Lawrence, to bring you a PBS special rich with remarkable musical TV moments featuring his parents singing, I'm Into Something Big, Sunrise Sunset, Blame It On The Bossa Nova, Portrait Of My Love, More, and more! We learn from TJ that management obstruction led to the long delay. We hear about the surprising source of the pristine footage he was able to find deep in a vault and we come to understand the role David's recollections played in the making of this visual celebration of the greatest singing spouse act in American music history. All that, plus TJ shares how his attention to detail pays off in the live shows he produces featuring legacy acts, why he always begins every project with the right intentions and the seemingly serendipitous ways in which he helps artists receive their well earned moments of recognition and appreciation! And Fritz is recommending Napoleon in theaters and streaming, and Weezy was moved by the Charles Blow documentary South to Black Power on Max.Path Points of Interest:TJ Lubinsky on WikipediaTJ Lubinsky on FacebookTJ Lubinsky on InstagramCurrent.org articleSteve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme: Memories Of My Mom And DadSteve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme: Memories Of My Mom And Dad TrailerPBS PassportTreasury CollectionPilley BianchiFor The Love of Dog: The Ultimate Relationship Guide by Pilley Bianchi and Calum HeathPilley on InstagramPilley on YouTubeChaser and JohnChaser on WikipediaChaser and John on YoutubeChaser and John on Sixty MinutesChaser and John on NovaNapoleon - Theaters/HBO Max/PrimeSouth To Black Power on Max
Dennis is joined via Zoom by Dion Labriola, the filmmaker and the subject of the documentary Dear Ike: Lost Letters to a Teen Idol, which is screening on World Animation Day on PBS SoCal and is also available for streaming on PBS.org. The movie documents Dion's teenage obsession with the child actor Ike Eisenmann from Escape to Witch Mountain and also a Doublemint gum commercial that was ubiquitous is the late 1970's. As a teen, Dion had a vision for an animated movie that he wanted to make and he was determined to convince his iold Ike to be one of the voices. In fact, he was so determined that he spent much of his teen years trying to track Ike down. Dion talks about what it was like to eventually be face-to-face with his teen idol, how his intense focus on the project related to his being a closeted gay teen, his attempt to get Larry Wilcox from CHiPs to help him get to Ike and the art teacher Pat Bishop who gave him a safe haven in school. Other topics include: that time Geraldo Rivera came to Dion's hometown of Akron, Ohio to chase after a pimp, Battle of the Network Stars-era cuties like Mike Lookinland, Gregory Harrison and Willie Aames, the fig gelato Dion had on his 30th birthday that he still dreams about and that time the comedian Carrot Top visited Dion in his deejay booth in a Chicago nightclub. www.dearike.com

Singer BOBBY SHERMAN was a high school football star when Hollywood A-Listers Jane Fonda and Natalie Wood discovered him at a party in the mid-'60s. They asked him to sing at the party, and after he did, Jane Fonda arranged a meeting for him with a talent agent. That meeting proved to be the start of an incredible career that lasted decades and turned him into one of the world's most famous teen idols. His face featured on the bedroom walls of teenage girls all over the world. Bobby started out his working life on the American teenage music show ‘Shindig'. After that he attracted a huge following as an actor in the hit TV series ‘Here Come The Brides' and he guested regularly on shows like ‘The Partridge Family'. He became the archetypal matinee idol. As his newfound fame grew though, it quickly became his nightmare. Bobby had no time to have a life of his own. He worked seven days a week in different cities and states, often falling into bed late at night, on his own and exhausted. 25,000 letters a week from fans didn't relieve the loneliness. He scored seven Top 40 hits between 1969 and 1971, including " Easy Come, Easy Go" and "Julie, Do Ya Love Me." At the same time, his face was all over, from lunch boxes, fan magazines, posters, and assorted merchandise. Success, however, was not all it was cracked up to be. In today's episode, I chat with Bobby Sherman and his wife of 25 years, Brigitte Poublon. We hear about Bobby's early life, how he felt about becoming a star and what the adoration of fans meant to him. Bobby tells us how he came to join the LAPD and about what instigated his career change as well as his ongoing desire to help mankind. The pair discuss how they met and formed The Brigitte and Bobby Sherman Children's Foundation https://www.bbscfoundation.org/ that today still makes a huge difference to the lives of many. They would love to receive a donation from you so please get in touch via the website to help a young child in need. Bobby Sherman is a funny, humble and strangely shy man. He's about to turn 80 but as you'll hear, he's still so youthful and energetic. Bobby Sherman really is that all-American boy next door and as nice a person as you could imagine. Bobby Rydell writes of his encounters with such giants of 20th century show business as Frank Sinatra, Ann-Margret, The Beatles, Red Skelton, Jack Benny and Dick Clark, whose Philly-based American Bandstand helped make Rydell the world's biggest teen idol in the years between Elvis Presley's army induction and the advent of Beatlemania. Rydell also delves into the darker and more dramatic aspects of his life, including the death of his beloved first wife, Camille, his decades of alcohol abuse, and the last-ditch transplant surgery that saved his life. Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents revered British pop icon, Peter Noone (recorded at the end of 2019). Peter discusses his extensive yearly touring schedule, being a music enthusiast, the beginnings of Herman's Hermits, songwriting, The Beatles & more, finding their place in a crowded radio marketplace, lyrics then and now, personal choice, working on Broadway, The Tremblers, a Farewell tour, his love of music, Casablanca Records, Neil Bogart, Tom Petty, Jimmy Page & John Paul Jones playing on Herman's Hermit songs and much much more. On getting started in music: "I started off as an enthusiast of music. I bought records and went to see live music. I knew lots of people who were in groups that played in their sister's attic and the little local nightclubs. One day, I found myself in a band where I was not just and enthusiast, but a participant." On a possible Farewell Tour: "I'm more like Mick Jagger. Arrogantly believing that I can pull it off for at least another ten years... Music is my hobby. When I hang up the phone with you, I'm going to play some music. That's what I do. When I'm in my car driving to a gig, I listen to music. Some people listen to the world news. I don't. I listen to music. And enjoy it, and smile and sing along and dislike and love and all of those things. So, why would I want to stop doing that?" On Neil Bogart: "I don't know how good he was at business, but he was a great character." On Coronation Street, he jokingly says, "I was in it in 1961 and it's still the number one show in England even without me in it." More than a half century since his reign as the Justin Bieber of the “Camelot” era, reviewers unanimously agree that multi-talented entertainer Bobby Rydell (@BobbyRydell) has told one hell of a story with today's release of his compelling new autobiography, Teen Idol on the Rocks: A Tale of Second Chances. From his vivid childhood on the fabled mid-20th-century streets of South Philadelphia through his more recent battles with alcoholism, and his lifesaving double-transplant surgery (he shares a liver with an eight-year-old girl), Rydell “has unbelievable stories to tell, and he's sharing the good, the bad, and the fascinating,” says Parade magazine. The Huffington Post adds: Teen Idol on the Rocks is “pure rock n' roll nostalgia with a big dose of personal memories that will tear your heart out. … another reason to embrace him even more!”
With his upcoming memoir, Idol Truth (written with The Moment host Chris Epting), former teen idol Leif Garrett bares his soul for the first time ever, revealing his deepest secrets about the extraordinary highs and devastating lows he has survived over the years. Garrett was a hardworking child actor in the early 1970s, appearing on dozens of popular films and TV programs. Then he was offered a chance to make a record and “Leif Garrett, teen idol” was born. Millions of teenage girls all over the world covered their walls with his picture. His face adorned hundreds of international magazine covers as he became one of the biggest and most desired heartthrobs in history. There were jet-setting tours, TV specials, and hit records, along with an endless supply of beautiful women, alcohol, and ultimately, the drugs that sent this shooting star into the darkest depths of addiction.
As a young man, Shawn Stevens became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He quickly also became a famous actor with roles on hit 70's and 80's shows such as Eight is Enough, Chips, Buck Rogers, and the Facts of Life. He starred in the ABC family drama The Mackenzies of Paradise Cove. He also had long running parts in daytime dramas Search For Tomorrow and Days Of Our Lives. He starred in the iconic church video Our Heavenly Father's Plan. He then put acting on the back burner to focus on family and church. Shawn went through some tough years but found joy working behind the scenes in the film industry. He now does both with a rejuvenated acting career and on set catering business. Shawn's story is one of faith, trials and ultimately peace in the gospel that will inspire us all.
Cody Christian joins to talk about growing up as one of Hollywood's hottest young actors and social media influencers. In this episode Brant continues the exploration of the phenomenon of being 'teen famous'. Cody's raw and revealing interview is in stark contrast to some of the stereotypical perception of today's youth culture. It's a can't miss discussion.
Legendary actor Rob Lowe joins to talk about the ups and downs of growing up as a young Hollywood heartthrob. In this episode Brant explores the phenomenon of being 'teen famous', as kids today grow up with social media fame (or infamy) just a few clicks away.
In one of his last interviews, David Cassidy talks candidly about his childhood, his quick rise to fame on The Partridge Family and the 49-year career he spent making music and entertaining audiences around the world. Subscribe and download on your favorite podcast platform: Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Tune In, Stitcher. In this episode, David describes the life of a teen idol, one that involves being stuffed in the trunk of a Toyota to escape a crowd at Madison Square Garden, only to be left alone in a dressing room in Queens for three hours. As Gunnar Nelson says, "now that's Rock & Roll." Cassidy is as revealing as he his reflective in talking about sneaking by 30,000 fans disguised in a wig and women's clothes before a record crowd at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City. Through his stories, you can also see an artist who is coming to terms with retirement and saying goodbye to his fans. Joined by Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, this episode looks at the eerie similarities between their late father Ricky Nelson and David Cassidy. We discover both had grandmothers who taught piano, both had strong influential fathers and both men grew up in New Jersey. In this episode the Nelson twins are incredibly generous and giving to a man they call a friend, but who's also clearly a mentor and father figure. Bobby Rydell is one of rock n’ roll’s early pioneers and an original teen idol. Scoring numerous hits of the late Fifties / early Sixties, like “Wild One,” “Swinging School,” “Volare” and “Forget Him.” He starred in the 1963 film Bye Bye Birdie alongside Ann Margaret and Dick Van Dyke, he’s also appeared on television and made the successful transition to playing the supper club circuit in Las Vegas. Now, Bobby’s back on the road as part of the Golden Boys tour with his longtime buddies Frankie Avalon and Fabian.
American singer Bobby Rydell's career spans over six decades long. Rydell was a teen-idol in the late 50's with hit songs like "Volare", "Wild One", "Kissin' Time" and many more. Rydell was the youngest headliner to play the Copacabana in New York and also starred in the movie version of Broadway's "Bye Bye Birdie", playing Hugo Peabody. Rydell's new book: "TEEN IDOL ON THE ROCKS: A Tale of Second Chances" goes into his vivid childhood on the fabled mid-20th-century streets of South Philadelphia, to his reign as the Justin Bieber of the "Camelot" era, his battles with alcoholism, and his lifesaving double-transplant surgery. A time when Frank Sinatra called Bobby his "favorite" pop singer. Bobby also delves into the darker and more dramatic aspects of his life, including the death of his beloved first wife, Camille, his decades of alcohol abuse, and the last-ditch transplant surgery that saved his life.
At 17, Bobby Rydell was the toast of American Bandstand - the kid from Italian South Philly with the smoothest voice, the highest pompadour, and the sweetest smile. And there were those hits: "Wild One," "Volare," and "Forget Him," to name a few. He was far more than just a teen idol. Bobby's voice and boy next door charm earned him a spot singing, acting, and dancing with Ann-Margret in the hit film Bye Bye Birdie. His phrasing and musicianship prompted Frank Sinatra to anoint him as his favorite young singer, and his comedic talents made him a nighttime fixture during the golden age of TV variety shows.Bobby Rydell's career spans six decades and encompasses every area of the entertainment world. His debut in the late '50s as a rock and roll teen idol lead to starring roles in such hit films as "Bye Bye Birdie" and plays such as "West Side Story." Bobby has made countless network TV appearances throughout the world on shows like Ed Sullivan, Jack Benny, George Burns, Milton Berle, Perry Como and of course American Bandstand. He was also a semi-regular on The Red Skelton Hour for many years. Working with the "greats" of comedy, Bobby was able to develop an uncanny comedic gift.TEEN IDOL ON THE ROCKS is just one aspect further confirming Rydell's still explosive career. Aside from continuing to tour around the world as a "saloon swingin'" solo artist and with fellow South Philly "Golden Boys" Frankie Avalon and Fabian in a road show with over 30 years of staying power, Rydell will be gracing the silver screen next year in Taylor Hackford's The Comedian with Robert De Niro .TEEN IDOL ON THE ROCKS is available NOW at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and book stores throughout America. Autographed copies and books with customized personal messages can be ordered exclusively at www.bobbyrydellbook.com.

Rydell High, that is – the name of the school where Danny Zuko and Sandy reunite, where the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies rule the roost. As many times I have watched that movie over the years, it never clicked that calling the fictional institution “Rydell High School” was a tribute to America’s most famous Rydell – Bobby. I figured if I said, 'Scotch and water,' I'd get smacked in the face, y'know?" Pretty cool – even if it was his pal Frankie Avalon who played the film’s Teen Angel, not him. After all, South Philly’s gift to teen pop and adult cool, Bobby Rydell, has enjoyed more than his share of fame and fortune.
