Hey hey Thrive Tribe! My session with Dr. Sharita Gaskins-Tillett was nothing short of insightful. I gleaned so much from the Boss Lady Dream Builder founder's wisdom and progressive view of Self-Care. We have been socialized as moms to be all things to everyone but ourselves. Our minds have a way of sabotaging us and lying to us that everyone else we care about matters more than us. Did you know that just because you think it doesn't mean it's true? It is so important that we learn to investigate our thought patterns because our lives take the shape of our thoughts and decisions. Dr. Sharita challenges women and moms to constantly give ourselves to change, to evolve. Dr Sharita runs ‘'A weekend for me'' retreats that help women reinvent themselves and innovate ways that will continuously improve their lives. She emphasizes the need for a like-minded community that should push you to become the greatest version of yourself. As you improve yourself, so does everything about you. Refuse to settle. We've saved the last of our live, in-person interviews at Sundance 2024 for the winners of the Sundance U.S. Documentary Competition Audience Award and overall Festival Favorite, the incredibly moving, tear-jerking, and, hopefully, policy-shifting documentary “Daughters”. Directors Angela Patton and Natalie Rae join Ken to discuss their world premiere screening and the life-changing organization “Girls For a Change” that Angela founded.   Over the course of the film, we meet Lashawn (5), Diamond (10), Unita (11), Sherita (15), and their families. Missing from their home lives are their fathers who are all incarcerated in a Washington, DC prison and who long to have some physical contact with their daughters, which is prohibited by prison policy. As the film unfolds, we learn about the “Date with Dad” program, a father-daughter dance which represents the only opportunity for these fathers and daughters to experience a so-called “touch visit”. When the “date” finally arrives, the hugs are tight, the emotions raw and the tears flow — both on-screen and off.   “Daughters” will be released later this year on Netflix.   Thanks to Amos Cochran of Edit/Score for hosting our 2024 Sundance interviews.  Edit/Score is a new music library with an innovative approach to finding music for your film. Is the journey in between our phases in life that uncomfortable?Usually, yes! Many times when we are transitioning from one stage in life into another stage we feel uncomfortable, confused, uncertain. We know we shouldn't go backwards, yet forward can sometimes feel like an uncharted frontier with no clear direction. That's why we should slow down the speed and take time to gather our thoughts, our senses and our strength.Join Allison and Sherita as they talk about their own transitions in life, from changing careers to changing partners. How the process is uncomfortable for them both, but how beautiful the foggy space has allowed themselves to embrace their new wants and needs. ‘Everything happens for a reason, life goes on.' Please know that bereaved parents have not lost their ability to think or to be logical. We know life goes on; we just don't know how. Yes, everything does happen for a reason; we struggle with the why's. Our child's life as we once knew it, does not go on. Our child's body has stopped functioning. In lots of ways, so did ours. - Sherita Thomas, ‘What Did You Say?' Like many other bereaved parents, today's guest, Sherita, has heard many well-meaning statements from people after the death of her 4 1/2 year old son, William. Oftentimes, instead of bringing comfort, these words actually caused increased pain. Unlike other bereaved parents, Sherita took the time to write down many of these statements that others said to her, and ponder what these friends could have said instead. She found a way to express their intent in a kinder way and she wrote them down, often typing on her computer through tear-filled eyes. Years passed and she continued to have thoughts of putting everything together in a book format to help others know what to say to newly bereaved parents. Then, 23 years after the loss of William, his older brother, Emir, died for unknown reasons. The well-meaning phrases started up again, and Sherita realized that such a book was truly needed. She understood how overwhelming the grief of child loss truly was. She felt called to finish that book despite her deep pain after losing the two youngest of her five children. A few years later, her book, ‘What Did You Say?' was published. She finally was able to share all of her wisdom gathered over more that a quarter of a century. (Click here to purchase on Amazon.) Sherita hoped that it would help many people. She hoped that newly bereaved parents whose friends and family had read the book would not have to hear the ‘crazy' things that she had heard. Never in her wildest dreams, however, did Sherita think that she would be one of the people her book helped. Unbelievably, last December, just months after her book was finally published, Sherita lost a third son, Elon, when he was shot and killed. All of the pain was fresh and raw again. Losing Elon brought back the pain of losing Emir and William as well. Amazingly, however, she says that no one in her life has said anything crazy or hurtful this time around. They read Sherita's words and learned how to better support her in her pain. Now, her hope is that others may gain this same knowledge through her book as well.

Season 2 Episode 2.Today's topic: BAD HABITS OF INEFFECTIVE TEACHERSThank you for tuning into the Center Pod Podcast ShowWe think you will enjoy it, so let's dig inContent:Bad habits:Focusing on being liked. Everyone wants to be liked, but if we keep thinking about how we want our students to like us, this is absolutely going to affect our teaching. And not in a good way. Failure to plan: We all have days that we realize last minute that we forgot to make copies of that worksheet we really need, but if we find ourselves habitually starting class not sure what we're doing today, we are in trouble. Yes, we might make it through the class, but we're certainly not going to be as effective as we could be if we'd prepared adequately. Not setting a standard or expectations: Procedures: Have a well-managed classroom with very well defined classroom rules and procedures that are clearly communicated to students.Targets: Show and communicate the learning targets of the day and how they connect to an essential higher order learning goal.Being inconsistentThinking you've figured it all out: Whenever we start to think that we've got it down, that we don't need to keep learning and growing, we start stagnating. And we're less effective than we could be if we kept looking for new ideas and better ways to teach.Teaching without passion: Having a Lack of Empathy: People are fighting silent battles everydayBeing Boring… Doing things the same old waySuffering In Silence…  Not asking for help from your colleaguesSummary:  Because of the significant impact teachers have on their students' academic achievement, life and career, they are always longing for effective teaching practices. But, despite their intent to improve and grow, there are some bad teaching habits they make that can negatively affect their teaching.Call to Action: Self CareOutro:Connect with us:Twitter: https://twitter.com/center_pod Website: https://centerpodpodcast.buzzsprout.com Youtube channel: Center•Pod PodcastGive us some of your thoughts on any of our podcasts.
