Luis Abinader sigue sin decir si se va a reelegir pero que yo razone el no tiene Plan B. Nada impide que el presidente se reelija a menos que esté recordando que la reelección o la posibilidad de la reelección fue una maldición para el Partido Revolucionario Dominicano, su fuerza política original y que fue la fuente de muchos de sus problemas. La violacion de acuerdos políticos internos en los que grupos beneficiarios del poder apostaban a quedarse generaron la tragedia de Antonio Guzmán, el ostracismo de Jorge Blanco e impidieron un triunfo de Jacobo Majluta al que todavía no se le han contado los votos. La modificación de la constitución para intentar reelegirse hecha por Hipólito Mejía en el peor momento posible, escindió al PRD con la salida de uno de sus líderes más reconocidos como fuera Hatuey DEcamps. Quizás Hatuey no se llevó millares de seguidores pero se llevó el discurso. El momento político actual es diferente Abinader no tiene sombras en sus propio partido, tiene una alta tasa de aprobación a pesar de la crisis y tiene a una oposición cercada por los casos de corrupción y por la memoria reciente. Como ahora existe Google no hay falsa promesa hecha por el PLD y su secuela, La FUPU, que no sea observada por la población.  La semana pasada una televidente me envió una foto de cuando LF daba el primer picazo para la construcción del Hospital de Sosua con un mensaje que decía “espero que ahora anuncie el primer block” Con ese cuadro no se entiende porqué Abinader baraja el anuncio a menos que no sea, como ya dijimos, el temor a soltar los demonios de su propia gente y con ello destruir la imagen que ha construido. En los 80 el PRD se dividió en tendencias y el liderazgo de Peña moderó el asunto; en los noventa el propio Peña fue víctima de las pasiones y el majlutismo parió la estructura y el PRI. En este siglo el asunto fue tan lejos que hoy el PRD es un partidito apropiado por Vargas Maldonado para negociar. Si usted le pregunta a un chinero por la reelección de Abinader le dirá que va, no entiendo porqué barajar la cosa.

"Ouvrir un livre, c'est regarder le monde. Le livre, c'est la liberté" J'ai découvert la saga de Catherine Bardon cet été. Un été bien particulier où les frontières se sont refermées. Mon envie d'ailleurs en a été décuplée. Cette saga composée de trois tomes (Les déracinés, l'américaine et le dernier, à ce jour, Et la vie repris son cours) est tombée à point nommé. Embarquée dans cette histoire, j'ai lu les trois livres en une semaine. Cela m'a permis de voyager et de revenir en République Dominicaine, une île que j'ai déjà parcourue plusieurs fois. Cette histoire romancée, teintée d'amour et d'exil, raconte l'histoire vraie et méconnue de l'installation de migrants juifs autrichiens et allemands à Sosua, dans le nord de l'île, pendant la seconde guerre mondiale. La République Dominicaine est faite de sable blanc, de cocotiers, de villages aux maisons colorées. En son centre se dresse El Pico del Duarte à plus de 3 000 mètres. Au nord, Sosua est une petite ville, non loin de Puerto Plata, qui donne sur l'océan atlantique. Malheureusement ses paysages de carte postale l'ont réduite à un tourisme de "tout inclus" dont les plages sont envahies par des complexes hôteliers. Mais la République Dominicaine a une âme comme tous les pays du monde. Cette âme a touché Catherine Bardon qui est tombée en amour pour cette île. Un jour, elle s'est retrouvée détentrice d'une histoire bien singulière en croisant la route d'un vieux monsieur qui lui a raconté qui il était et d'où il venait. Et la romancière est née ce jour-là...

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Joe English worked as a ranch hand at the Wild Horn Ranch in Florissant, Colorado. He has graduated cum laude from Colorado College in Colorado Springs and after got an MA from Rice University in Houston and is a Woodrow Wilson Fellow. English has been featured in a 60 Minutes broadcast. He was a professor at Triton College but now spends much of his time in Sosua, Dominican Republic. English's writings have appeared in the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Reader and Co-Existence, the literary journal which featured the works of Henry Miller. His most recent publication, the short story Mrs. Padgett's Pearls, was selected by Zimbell House Publishing for the anthology After Effects.
