“Well I'll be greased and fried! What's the circus doing up in these parts?”The Chiodo Brothers and Their Creature Feature LegacyBefore Killer Klowns from Outer Space, the Chiodo Brothers – Charles, Edward, and Stephen – had already made a name for themselves in the special effects world of the 1980s. With credits on films like Critters and sequences in RoboCop, they were well-versed in creating practical effects and creature designs. Killer Klowns from Outer Space represented an opportunity for them to showcase their skills in a feature-length film, with Stephen Chiodo taking on the role of director. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the One-and-Done series with a conversation about their 1988 film Killer Klowns from Outer Space.Clowning Around with Horror Tropes and Twisted ExpectationsIn our discussion, we marvel at how Killer Klowns from Outer Space gleefully subverts classic clown tropes, turning seemingly innocent gags into sinister and often grotesque moments. From the balloon animal hunting dog to the shadow puppet T-Rex that devours its victims, the film consistently surprises and delights with its inventive use of clown iconography. However, we question whether the horror-comedy balance always lands, with some scenes leaning more heavily into the absurd than the truly frightening.A Trio of Heroes and the Trope of Incompetent Authority FiguresThroughout our conversation, we explore the dynamics between the film's central trio – Mike, Debbie, and Dave – and how their relationships evolve as they face the alien clown threat. We also examine the trope of young heroes pitted against incompetent authority figures, a common theme in 1950s-era B-movies that Killer Klowns from Outer Space both embraces and satirizes.Other topics we cover include:The memorable performances of the supporting cast, particularly Royal Dano as Farmer Gene Green and John Vernon as the skeptical police officerThe film's vibrant color palette and the effectiveness of the practical effectsThe Chiodo Brothers' continued work in the industry, including their involvement in Team America: World Police and Marcel the Shell with Shoes OnWhy Killer Klowns from Outer Space Endures as a Cult ClassicDespite its status as a one-and-done feature for director Stephen Chiodo, Killer Klowns from Outer Space has endured as a beloved cult classic. Its unique blend of horror and comedy, combined with the Chiodo Brothers' imaginative creature designs, has helped it stand the test of time. While it has some soapy acting and feels of its era, we ultimately find Killer Klowns from Outer Space to be a delightful and entertaining entry in the realm of 1980s horror-comedy. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. "Killer Klowns from Outer Space" is a 1988 horror-comedy film directed by Stephen Chiodo. The story begins when a strange comet crashes near the small town of Crescent Cove. Teenagers Mike Tobacco and Debbie Stone investigate and discover a circus tent-like spaceship inhabited by malevolent alien clowns. These "killer klowns" use their circus-themed weaponry to capture and harvest the town's residents, encasing them in cotton candy cocoons. As the klowns wreak havoc, Mike and Debbie, along with a few allies, must find a way to stop the invaders before it's too late. The film is known for its campy humor, creative special effects, and unique blend of horror and comedy.

THE SHADOWS PODCAST CELEBRATES 100 EPISODES! We couldn't think of a better way to celebrate than with master special effects artists specializing in clay modeling, creature creation, stop motion, and animatronic Stephen and Edward Chiodo! The Chiodo Brothers have worked on An American Werewolf in London, Critters, Elf, Gremlins, Killer Klowns From Outer Space, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Team America: World Police, RoboCop and now they're here to share their story on this weeks episode of the Shadows. Charles, Edward, and Stephen Chiodo were fascinated with movies and film-making at a young age. In this episode, they discuss how they grew up in Long Island making homemade 8 mm movies with a camera projector setup. One thing led to another, and their childhood dreams of film-making eventually led them to Los Angeles and the creation of their first feature film, Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Over 30 years later, their movie is still celebrated with Universal Studio's Halloween Horror Nights, a new video game release, and fans still celebrating their legacy. For this episode of the Adam Analyzes Podcast, I revisited the Chiodo Brothers/Stephen Chiodo directed classic, Killer Klowns From Outer Space. This one is a cult classic that I believe stands the test of time while still being pop culturally relevant. Its also a great B-movie that is smarter than it's reputation & possibly the greatest film ever to feature murderous Kuller Klowns. On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are doing everything we can to not become hanging sacks of cotton candy goo in the Stephen Chiodo film from 1988, Killer Klowns from Outer Space. If you can give us any illuminating information about why the heck these clowns, sorry, klowns landed on Earth, systematically hunted down humans, and were a general nuisance, I would be grateful. The film sure as hell didn't answer those questions! Was it just for the sweet, sweet human goo that we become when we're trapped in one of their sick human farming pods? Is their motivation just to get out their craziest of crazy straws and slurp us on down? Are we nothing but food to them? Is this film actually a commentary on the exploitation of factory farming here in real life? These answers may forever elude us. I like to think these sick bastards did all those heinous acts because the screenwriters had no idea what they were doing. Tell me I'm wrong—they came up with a catchy title and then had to try stuffing a feature-length production into an idea the size of what should have been an extended short film. Whatever the case may be, we watched this B-movie, so that means we also need to rate it. Will this one earn itself a blunder, a flunder, or the increasingly rare brilliant? Welcome back to the Nick Taylor Horror Show! Stephen Chiodo is an American writer, director, and special effects makeup artist and one of the legendary Chiodo Brothers. The Chiodo Brothers are a trio of special effects and stop motion artists and animators best known for their work on Team America: World Police, Critters, and Killer Klowns from Outer Space which Stephen also directed. The Chiodos also created the claymation sequences for the Large Marge scene from Pee-wee's Big Adventure, as well as the stop-motion elements in the North Pole scenes from Elf. Stephen's latest feature is Alien Xmas, an animated feature that he directed. When extraterrestrials attempt to steal Earth's gravity, only the gift-giving spirit of Christmas and a small Alien named X can save the world. Executive Produced by Jon Favreau, don't forget to check out Alien Xmas this holiday season, now streaming on Netflix. Also on today's episode is none other than the one and only Cig Neutron. Cig is no stranger to the show and like Stephen is also a special effects makeup artist, director, and creature designer. Cig has done effects work on multiple movies including Tron Legacy, Suckerpunch, and Star Trek Discovery, and was on Face/Off's season 7 then again on season 11 as one of the Face/Off allstars. Cig also hosts a podcast that I really love called Cig Neutron's Spewtron, available everywhere, and he does a pretty cool series of livestreams on Twitch where he breaks down his effects techniques so if you're not already, make sure you follow Cig Neutron on all of the social medias. We had a pretty wide-ranging conversation. Both of these guys are really fascinating and accomplished artists - we got into everything from creative processes, to practical effects and geeked out about favorite new artists, shows, and movies so get ready for recommendations. Quick note that this interview was done back in May. I hope you all enjoy this conversation with Stephen and Cig as much as I did. Here without further ado are Stephen Chiodo and Cig Neutron. Thanks for listening! Don't forget to subscribe, and follow the show on Instagram at @IMNickTaylor and on Twitter at the same handle. ----- Produced by Simpler Media
The Chiodo brothers — Stephen, Edward and Charles — were well known special effects artists in Hollywood focusing in clay models, creature creation and stop motion animatronics. In 1988, they decided to crossover from creating special effects to creating their own movie. The original concept came from Stephen Chiodo who imagined the most terrifying image he could muster and that involved driving down a lonely mountain road and a car would pass by with a clown staring back at him. From that simple idea spawned the movie “Killer Klowns from Outer Space,” a PG-13 horror sci-fi spoof where a group of aliens arrive on Earth from unknown origins and begin harvesting humans as a source of food. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to break out the cotton candy and prepare our popcorn guns as we talk about the 1988 movie “Killer Klowns from Outer Space”…
Director Stephen Chiodo and producer Edward Chiodo are behind the new stop-motion animated special Alien Xmas. It premieres this Friday November 20th on Netflix. The Chiodo Bros. hope families make this a holiday season viewing tradition, right alongside the classics. They also discuss working with Jon Favreau on this and 2003's "Elf".
A spaceship full of killer clowns lands in the woods, and the evil aliens wreak havoc on a nearby small town in this '80s gem.
We interview Stephen Chiodo, director of Killer Klowns From Outer Space, about his experience making the film with his brothers, the long-awaited sequel, and some of his other work - including the creation of Large Marge with Tim Burton in Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and his new project, Netflix's upcoming Alien Xmas.New episodes every Friday this month, follow @betsysodaro and @heyjustin for updates!Show Logo by Tom Smith.Theme Song by Casey Trela.Edited by Brian Holmes.Rate, subscribe, and tell your killer klown lovin' friends!
This week on Total Movie Recall, one man's fun trash is another man's not-fun trash. Steve gets typically indignant at Ryan's casual, cruel dismissal of somebody's labor of love, and Ryan reaches heretofore unplumbed depths of his warped psyche, exploring the lingering effects of watching movies like Killer Klowns at too tender of an age. This is what happens when a little boy lets teenage girls bully him into watching movies. Ryan's therapist has her work cut out for her this week. Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) d. Welcome to Episode 135 of Broadcast Geeks! On this podcast we discuss all things geek and nerd related, provided our DVR's have space and our Netflix accounts are our own and none others. This week the Geeks (Mitch, Jeff, Nate, Jake and Matt Orrin) are joined by Monica Nevi, a comic and film maker based out of Los Angeles, at the Sexpot Comedy Studios located above the awesome Mutiny Information Cafe for another packed episode of geeky goodness. Monica, much like Jeff, is a big basketball fan so we talked a lot about the NBA and the WNBA. We talked about the greatness of old teams, the movement of teams like the Seattle Supersonics, and her documentary webseries 80 for 80. On it, she interviews octogenarians with sports related questions. Well, you can't talk about sports, like basketball, without mentioning Space Jam. Monica shared her favorite line from that movie, which involved a conversation between Bill Murray and Michael Jordan. Could we see more basketball related movies, or TV shows? Maybe we could get a new channel, such as The CWNBA? Daredevil season 3 has been released on Netflix and the man with no fear definitely doesn't disappoint this time around, neither does Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk. This all happened at the same time that Netflix dropped Iron Fist, and Luke Cage, from their roster of shows. The last came as a surprise to all, and we throw our thoughts out on why this happened. Is it because of Disney releasing their own streaming service in the near future? Does it have to do with ratings? Listen to find out. Matt Orrin just got back from the Telluride Horror Show, a horror film festival set in one of the most beautiful parts of Colorado, and talks about the fun times he had. He met Stephen Chiodo, director of Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and even hung out with him over the weekend. They were Festies! There were a lot of fun, and some scary, movies at the fest and they talked about one call Mega Time Squad, which allows a person with the cursed amulet to create a copy of himself and go back in time. Not exactly like Madrox, the Multiple Man, but that led to interesting conversations about him. How many copies can he make of himself, and does he lose strength and power with each copy? If you could copy yourself, how many would YOU need to get through each day? We put the magic number at around 3-4 copies. We finish up with the regular topics, such as CW shows, comic books, new movies, and Clint Howard. We also talk about the new Halloween movie, which Nate saw and enjoyed. He talks about it but there are no big spoilers. If you havent already checked out Denver Open Media, and what they have offered then go to https://www.denveropenmedia.org As you might already know, we'll be on Tuesday nights at 10pm. Killer Klowns from Outer Space is a fantastic cult classic sci-fi horror comedy from 1988 written and directed by the Chiodo Brothers. The Chiodo brothers are these 3 brothers who grew up making films in their basement for fun and now work in the Hollywood special effects industry. They do it all...puppets, creatures, stop motion and more! They created and operated the Critters in the movie Critters (1986) and it's sequels, they did the stop motion in the famous Large Marge scene in Pee Wee's Big Adventure and they created all of the mouse dioramas in the 2010 comedy Dinner for Schmucks. That's just the tip of the iceberg with the Chiodos. Stephen Chiodo is my guest on this episode to talk all about Killer Klowns from Outer Space, his career in the special effects industry and more! A great peek behind the curtain into the film industry. Thanks for listening!
