Welcome to the second of a multi-part series where I cover brief and not-so-brief highlights from many of my favorite podcast guests! Learn about Gretchen Rubin’s 4 Tendencies (Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, and Rebel), hear a major life lesson from my 107-year-old barber, and another one from Seth Godin, who reminds us to “turn that s*it off!” when faced with distraction. You’ll hear from Ray Sidney, Google’s fifth-ever employee, on the importance of pure motivation, why Mark Manson says “self-worth is an illusion”, and that our purpose in life is to “create a string of hope narratives.” I share key advice from John Assaraf on how to rewire your brain for success, as well as important words from Dr. Ron Sinha, who warns us of the dangers of rumination and consumerism—the “hedonic treadmill.” You will also hear from Dr. Robert Lustig, who describes the “hacking of the American Mind” with corporate-driven instant gratification dopamine hits, Dr. Judson Brandeis on sexual health, and learn how to improve your eyesight with Jake Steiner. Finally, William Shewfelt offers a powerful perspective on having a resilient success mindset and Jeff Kahn explains the sleep bank account. TIMESTAMPS: In her book, Gretchen Rubin categorizes four main categories that people fall into with their behavior patterns. They are the upholder, the questioner, the obliger, and the rebel. [00:49] Here's what the research shows. The population, 41% of the population are obligers. 24% are questioners, 19% are upholders, and 17% are rebels. [12:55] The world’s oldest barber, at 107, gave Brad a haircut and inspired Brad’s longevity aspirations. [13:40] Seth Godin talked about persevering especially in athletics. [17:24] You must motivate yourself for the right reasons. [19:50] Mark Manson says that self-worth is an illusion, and it's actually a form of persistent low-level narcissism. You can learn to merge your thinking brain with your feeling brain. [23:11] The brain-training expert, John Assaraf, talked about the obstacles to rewiring our brain. You need to take baby steps. [30:31] If you are on the treadmill of the rat race of trying to achieve more and more, you are sacrificing your health and mental well-being. [33:57] When you ruminate about the past, that generally promotes depression and ruminating about the future, generally promotes anxiety. [37:08] Dr. Brandeis contends that 95% of erectile dysfunction problems are psychological. There is nothing wrong with the plumbing. [40:51] Jake Steiner is an expert on vision is challenging some of the foundational premises of using corrective eyewear. [42:47] William Shewfelt talks about having a plan, locking in that mindset and just never giving up. [44:26] Jeff Kahn, sleep expert suggests that you treat your sleep like a bank account. When you experience a deficit for whatever reason, strive to make that up. [48:48] In the last 40 years, government legislation and subsidies have promoted an ever- available temptation combined with constant stress, with the end result of an unprecedented epidemic of addiction, anxiety, depression, and chronic disease. While retiring can be a reward for years of hard work, this new adjustment can also trigger stress, anxiety, and depression. So how do we cope with these changes? Jeff Kahn explains See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Great questions from listeners in this Q&A show, including the subtle and natural taste of B.rad Superfuel versus most ultra-sweet proteins, walking barefoot safely, if I can really “sprint” for 30,40,50 seconds? (no! that's a HIIT session), are sleep requirements genetic? (yes—hear more in my show about sleep with RiseScience founder Jeff Kahn) and tips for custom designing a sensible cold therapy routine. I also talk about how Australia boasts 10% of our audience (guessing it's probably because they love outdoor, active lifestyles), recommend blood tests for peak performers to strive for way better than today's pathetic “normal”, and talk about if competitive mindsets are genetic or trainable (both!) and how to cultivate pure motivation as a triathlete by referencing my book, How To Improve Your (Triathlon) Time. Finally, I talk about the Blue Zones documentary—the inaccuracy of the cherry-picked and misrepresented “plant-based” attribute (Blue Zones eat well-sourced animal products), the real secret to Blue Zones longevity (such as extensive movement and strong social connections), whether or not I am completely honest about my own health and fitness journey, and if I'm willing to change my mind in regards to health information (if you've been listening to me for a while, you can guess this answer easily!). TIMESTAMPS: Kenny wants to share his enthusiasm for B.rad's Whey Protein, even though at first, he thought the taste too bland. You want to be careful when reading labels. “natural flavoring” or “natural flavors” is code word for chemicals. [00:48] Are Peluvas superior to barefoot for making structural changes faster? [05:14] Aberdeen Shire Guitar Teacher asks: How long should you sprint to achieve the health benefits? A true sprint is anything that's eight seconds or less in duration. [08:56] David Gifford works hard and really needs his sleep. How does that work with a spouse who is the opposite? [18:52] On YouTube, Red Eye asks about cold therapy sessions and the Shiver Protocol. [21:44] Alan Placencia from Australia wants input on blood tests. Getting a fasting insulin number is very important. The triglycerides to HDL ratio is also important. [25:32] Male hormone panels indicate how you compare for your age group. Unfortunately, there has been a steady decline in the average male testosterone level. {[31:30] James Hall asks to what extent do you reckon that mindset and mentality is genetic versus what is learned and trainable? [34:07] Alistair Henderson talks about Brad's Triathlon book and about the Blue Zone, the long living peoples around the world that have an active, energetic lifestyle [36:31] Free Speech Joe commented on Apple Podcasts that he appreciates Brad's style of honesty and flexibility. The story of Russia's membership in the Council of Europe now has a beginning, a middle, and an end. What can we learn about the values of this international organization from Russia's participation in it? Was Russia's membership “worth it”? Any attempted answer must produce more questions: from which perspective – Russia's, the Council's, other Member States' – should the effects of Russian membership be evaluated? How did the Council of Europe change Russia (if Russia was, indeed, changed) and how did Russia change the Council of Europe? This lecture examines the beginning of this story to identify the details in Russia's drive for membership that may have planted seeds for its later expulsion. - About the Speaker: Jeffrey Kahn is the University Distinguished Professor of Law at Southern Methodist University.
Today on Midday, it's another installment in our occasional series, Midday on Ethics. A computational biologist from Johns Hopkins named Steven Salzberg published a commentary last week on the Hub, a Johns Hopkins University news website, in which he warned of the dangers of creating “superbugs” in labs for purposes of research. Dr. Salzberg has long been a critic of so called “gain of function” research. What is that, and why do others share Dr. Salzberg's concerns? That's where we'll begin today on this edition of Midday on Ethics. Tom's guest is our good friend Dr. Jeffrey Kahn, the director of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics. Dr. Jeff Kahn joins us today in Studio A. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's Midday on Ethics. Today, a conversation about vaccine mandates. Tom's guest is Dr. Jeffrey Kahn, the director of The Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics. To entice those who are reluctant to become inoculated, the private and public sector have tried education, trusted influencers and a range of incentives, from money to doughnuts to tickets to beer. But patience is wearing thin with those who are still, despite wide availability and solid evidence of efficacy and safety, refusing to act in a way that will help stop transmission of this deadly disease. There is some early evidence that mandates are effective. The New York Times reported last week that in New York, where a mandate for health workers is in effect, roughly 92% of workers in hospitals and nursing homes have now been vaccinated. Other Health systems in California and Texas report that the wave of resignations predicted when mandates were announced have not materialized. Private companies report equally high levels of vaccinations after they instituted mandates. In California, not only teachers and staff at public schools will be required to be inoculated. Soon, all students age 12 and up will have to get vaccinated in order to attend classes. Mandates are the subject of several lawsuits, but so far, the courts have held that the state or private employers do have the right to require vaccination against certain diseases in the interest of public health. On Friday, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor denied a request from some New York City teachers to block the city's vaccine mandate. Many who choose not to be vaccinated frame the issue as one of personal liberty rather than public health. What do the rest of us owe them? Dr. Jeffrey Kahn joins us on our digital line from his office in Baltimore. We welcome listener comments and questions. This week I am speaking to Jeff Kahn, one of the world’s leading sleep specialists. He is the co-founder and CEO at Rise Science and was one of the first to publish research on technology enabled sleep behaviour modification over a decade ago. He has recently completed the largest known study on sleep and real world job performance which I find deeply fascinating and something that is not spoken about enough. Jeff’s research and work has been read by millions and he continues to empower people to live healthier and more successful lives through better sleep and circadian health. His incredible company could not be more relevant today. The app essentially helps you make behaviour modifications all-around sleep. Jeff believes lack of quality sleep may be the most under appreciated health concern in society, and his company is working to change that through sleep behaviour modification. In this episode, we discuss how sleep is the fibre of what it means to be human and how it has the power to affect our diet, our emotional health, our ability to exercise and even our vocal tone! Jeff explains that the two things you should care about are sleep debt and circadian rhythm. He encourages us to monitor our total sleep debt over time to get an accurate picture of your sleep need. He also suggests we strategise our day around the day’s dips and peaks - scheduling tasks that require more concentration around our peaks and more passive tasks around our dips. His app Rise Science helps you track sleep, know your energy schedule, measure your sleep debt - allowing people to keep their circadian rhythms and sleep debt at the forefront of their minds. I learnt so much from this conversation and it is definitely worth a listen if you struggle with sleep or if you’re in need of a bedtime routine. Sweet dreams! For many generations, Americans were sold the idea of upward mobility. But today’s generations are unfortunately and unexpectedly struggling with downward mobility, both financial and emotional. A new essay collection gives irreverent and empathetic voice to this generation, hurtling into their next chapter with no safety net, and author Annabelle Gurwitch joined us to discuss this unique book. In conversation with writer Susan Orlean, Gurwitch shared passages from You’re Leaving When?: Adventures in Downward Mobility, and about her inspiration for writing it. She explored her own experience with embracing homesharing, welcoming a housing-insecure young couple and a bunny rabbit into her home, as well as relearning to parent one pronoun at a time when her college student child sheds the gender binary. With humor, she related diving into the dating pool and flunking the magic of tidying up. In a time when so many believed they had a semblance of security but wound up with a fragile economy, Gurwitch offered stories of resilience, adaptability, low-rent redemption, and the kindness of strangers. She invited us to timely and eminently relatable conversation. Annabelle Gurwitch is the author of I See You Made an Effort; Wherever You Go, There They Are; You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up (coauthored with Jeff Kahn); and Fired! (also a Showtime Comedy Special). She’s written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, Los Angeles Times, and Los Angeles Magazine, and was a regular contributor to NPR. The longtime cohost of Dinner & a Movie, she performs with the Moth Mainstage and at arts centers around the country. Susan Orlean is an author and staff writer for The New Yorker. That yawn could be telling you more about your health than you realize. Innovator Jeff Kahn believes lack of quality sleep may be the most underappreciated health concern in society, and his company is working to change that through sleep behavior modification. He tells listeners Why sleep is the "biggest lever you have in your control," How he ties sleep problems and effective sleep to relationships and solving some of the world's biggest challenges, What's the two-factor model of sleep and wake regulation, and How the Rise Science app for sleep works for technology-enabled sleep behavior. Jeff Kahn is a cofounder and CEO of Rise Science, a company that harnesses technology for better sleep. He studied science, design, and engineering in graduate school and his own struggles with sleep brought him into the university's sleep department; that's where it all began. Since then, research has only increased on the side of the importance of sleep. He shares some of this research with listeners as well as better sleep tips and available resources for more information. He explains how the two-factor model of sleep works in terms of our empathy, cognitive abilities, and other skills throughout our waking hours. These factors are known as "sleep debt," or how sleep deprived someone is, and circadian rhythm. The Rise Science app addresses both of these factors, measuring and suggesting modes of improvement. He explains how and addresses other sleep issues such as the "sleep hangover," the role of napping, different sleep stages, chemicals released in sleep like adenosine and what it does, and whether it's possible to get too much sleep. Feeling sleepy yet? Well, for some tips about how to address your sleep needs, listen in. Episode also available on Apple Podcasts: apple.co/30PvU9C

It was just the simple fact for us that sleep affects, as far as I can tell, every measurable thing that we do know about human functioning, sleep has an effect on that measure. So to think about something that impacts everything that you do, impacts how long you live, and then impacts billions of people, that, it's almost unheard of. There really is nothing else that really impacts people at that scale. Right now, people are working harder. The boundaries between work and home have really kind of evaporated as we're working from home right now. Jeff gives us some examples of the impact and the correlation between good sleep and productivity, and why that's even more important right now. Listen in to hear his answer to the question "Can you make up sleep debt?" We talk about the science of sleep. We talk about precisely how getting more sleep can help you get more sales. Jeff also tells us how the app works. Check them out, risescience.com. Go to your favorite app store and look for Rise: Track Sleep. They have generously made the app available for free right now to help folks sort of get through this current craziness.______________________________________________________________________________ Sales Pipeline Radio is sponsored and produced by Heinz Marketing on the Funnel Radio Channel. Today, another edition of Midday on Ethics. We’ve talked several times over the past year about gene editing, and the ethical questions that go along with potentially editing the genes of plants and animals, including humans. Today, we revisit these questions with Dr. Jeffrey Kahn, the Director of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics. Why? Because there is some news, perhaps a new way of thinking, about a technology developed only four years ago. It’s called Crispr, and it allows scientists to edit genes precisely, to do things, potentially, like reduce the risk of passing along an inherited disease, or eliminate the risk all together. Or, for example, to eliminate the mosquitoes that carry malaria. About a year and a half ago, scientists proposed what to many people seemed like a good idea at the time -- using Crispr to save endangered animals that were threatened by an invasive species by implanting a so-called gene drive -- a gene that would reduce the fertility of the invasive animals, thus giving the endangered species in the same area a better chance at survival. Last week, the news caught our eye that the very scientist who had proposed this originally now says that field testing the gene drive would be a bad idea. So why is that? What are the unintended consequences of gene editing, including human gene editing? Dr. Jeff Kahn helps us explore how ethicists frame complex questions like this, and to answer your questions.
ANNABELLE GURWITCH The actress and bestselling author shares a hilarious new collection of essays about family in Wherever You Go, There They Are When Annabelle Gurwitch (best recognized as the co-host of TBS’s Dinner & a Movie, among many other roles) was a child, surrounded by a cast of epically dysfunctional relatives, she secretly prayed that it was all a terrible mistake. A family of bootleggers, gamblers, and philanderers, the Gurwitches have always been a bit vague on the standard ideal of a loving and supportive family. Their definition includes people you can count on to borrow money from, hold a grudge against, or blackmail. One day, unfortunately, Gurwitch woke up to realize that she'd made pretty much the same mistakes as everyone else before her--just in a new zip code. Wherever she went, there they were. Annabelle Gurwitch discusses (in her hilarious way): · her southern Jewish roots · her flirtation with surrogate families, including theater folk, pet people, a UFO cult, the sisterhood, and the ladies who brunch at Tel Aviv Gardens Retirement Home in Miami, FL · that, for better or worse, it's worth celebrating the traditions, rituals, and recipes that come with a shared mythology and legacy (even if her own inheritance amounts to a small plot of land split between five relatives on an ill-fated sliver of sand known as Massacre Island.) · the spectacularly daunting search for the community where her aging parents will spend the last chapter of their lives. Both hysterically funny and moving, Gurwitch shares the importance and insanity of family for anyone who's even occasionally been frustrated by the people they share carbohydrate-laden meals with every year. About the Author Annabelle Gurwitch is an actress and the author I See You Made an Effort (a New York Times bestseller and Thurber Prize finalist); You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up (coauthored with Jeff Kahn), and Fired! also a Showtime Comedy Special. Gurwitch gained a loyal following during her stint cohosting Dinner & a Movie on TBS and years as a regular commentator on NPR. She’s written for the New Yorker, the New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The Hollywood Reporter. Gurwitch was the new anchor on HBO's Not Necessarily the News and hosted WA$TED on Planet Green network. Her acting credits include: Seinfeld, Boston Legal, Dexter, Melvin Goes to Dinner. A veteran of many lauded and even more misguided theatrical productions, she regularly performs at arts centers around the country. Annabelle is a Jewish mother, a reluctant atheist, and an ardent environmentalist. She is empty-nesting in Los Angeles. www.annabellegurwitch.com

I See You Made An Effort: Compliments, Indignities and Survival Stories from the Edge of 50 (Blue Rider Press) Is 50 the new 40 or is 50 still 50? Maybe. In this wickedly funny new collection of essays, I See You Made An Effort, actress and writer Annabelle Gurwitch explores the hazards of turning 50, outsourcing your endocrine system, and falling in lust at the Genius bar. From the woman the Washington Post calls “hilarious,” this new book is the ultimate coming-of middle-age story and a must-read for women everywhere. The panic began to set in when Annabelle turned 49. The solicitations from the AARP began flooding her mailbox as she weighed going back to school, getting divorced and raising llamas. She couldn't afford a vacation, so she was taking a lot of naps. A visit to her gynecologist ended not with one of his usual benign send-offs—stay healthy, stay happy, stay hydrated—but instead with the slightly ominous: "Stay funny." In this new collection of essays, Annabelle Gurwitch has taken her gynecologist's advice to heart. Whether she's navigating the extensive anti-aging offerings in the department store beauty counter or negotiating the ins and outs of acceptable behavior with her teenage son, Gurwitch bravely turns an unflinching eye towards the myriad of issues women can expect to encounter in their middle years. For tonight's reading Annabelle Gurwitch will be joined by members of the Suite 8 Writer's Collective, Jillian Lauren, Heather Havrilesky and Joshua Wolf Shenk. Annabelle Gurwitch is an actress and author of You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up, a self-hurt marital memoir co-written with her husband, Jeff Kahn, now a theatrical play in its third national tour; and Fired! Tales of the Caned, Canceled, Downsized & Dismissed. Her Fired! documentary premiered as a Showtime Comedy Special and played film festivals around the world. Gurwitch gained a loyal comedic following during her numerous years co-hosting the cult favorite, Dinner & a Movie; her acting credits include Dexter, Boston Legal, Seinfeld, Melvin Goes to Dinner, The Shaggy Dog and Not Necessarily The News on HBO. Most recently, she starred in the adaptation of Grace Paley's A Coney Island Christmas by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Donald Margulies at The Geffen Playhouse. Live appearances include New York Comedy Festival, 92nd St Y, Upright Citizens Brigade and story salons in both New York and Los Angeles. She has served as a regular commentator on NPR and a humorist for TheNation.com. Her writing has appeared in More, Marie Claire, Men's Health, Los Angeles Times and elsewhere. Gurwitch is a passionate environmentalist, a reluctant atheist, and lives with her husband and son in Los Angeles. Jillian Lauren is the author of the novel Pretty and the New York Times bestselling memoir Some Girls: My Life in a Harem. Her writing has appeared in The Paris Review Daily, The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Los Angeles Magazine, Salon, The Rumpus and The Moth Anthology, among others. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and son. Today on maDCap, we mark the auspicious date of 4/20 with a show for all ents (don't know what an ent is? Bing that shit.) First, Cartoon Network's Adult Swim is ground zero for baked TV viewing, and we'll speak with the force behind one of their latest hit shows. Justin Roiland is the co-creator, writer and voice actor of 'Rick and Morty' on Adult Swim. David learned about the struggles of the creative process and the show's wild ass content from the California native. Then, while Cali has been on the forefront of prescribing medicinal marijuana for nearly two decades, but as of 2009, Washington DC has been in the game too. We'll close today's show with the proprietor of the only licensed medicinal marijuana dispensary north of Downtown, Takoma Wellness Center. It may sound like a yoga studio, but the only tree pose you'll find there is of the sticky-icky variety. And who runs this haven of herbal remedies? None other than Rabbi...yes Rabbi Jeffrey Kahn, whom we spoke to on the week of passover. He tells us about his personal journey, religious philosophy, and give a history of cannabis in America. This week's show featured an interview with Jeff Kahn, a landowner who recently enrolled his property in a forest carbon program. Jeff grew up in Queens, New York but was drawn to rural land ownership. He purchased an 80 acre property in Virginia that had woods, pastures, and a creek. Over 40 years, Jeff undertook various projects like building a house, renovating pastures, installing a pond, and raising cattle. He discussed putting the property in a conservation easement to protect it from future subdivision. Jeff also shared his experience participating in a forest carbon program, explaining that it allows for sustainable forest management while providing an income stream. The program involved a long term contract and annual verification visits. Jeff hopes his stewardship will benefit the land for years to come as nearby development encroaches.
B.rad podcast listener Q&A returns with a splash with some great topics to cover. We start with a success story from longtime listener Jon tackling the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim-to-rim crossing (46 miles, 11k climbing), emphasizing the importance of preparation and enjoying the journey, instead of focusing on the result and bagging bucket list social media photo opps (this can end poorly, like on Mt Everest or in Chinese ultramarathon events). Next we talk about how naps affect circadian rhythm, and how to easily monitor your sleep health by tracking the simple concept of sleep debt (listen to my show with Jeff Kahn for details). Then I dive into a lengthy discussion about the tradeoff between peak athletic performance and longevity, teed up by a question about Robb Wolf's comment: “If you want to live longer, lift more weights and eat more protein.” It's interesting to consider how things like low-carb/ketogenic eating, fasting, high intensity workouts, and being in the higher age groups are all stress factors that must be balanced carefully. Thanks for listening and keep the great questions coming!TIMESTAMPS:Many people try amazing athletic feats but find they aren't as prepared as they thought they were. Preparing is the secret. [01:10]People go to the limit and some don't survive. [10:45]Between midnight and 3:00 AM the most restorative process takes place. [12:08]How does taking a nap affect your circadian rhythm? [13:55]Sleep debt accumulates over time and naps can help “pay off that debt.” [19:53]Dan asks how does Robb Wolf's statement about eating more protein jive with the book, Two Meals a Day? We cannot burn exercise calories to mitigate dietary transgressions. [23:54]Our protein needs increase as we age because we are less efficient at synthesizing those amino acids. [30:56]Could it be that we have an extremely personal distinction when we're trying to strategize our caloric intake and our macro nutrient intake? *I had such a great time speaking to sleep expert Jeff Kahn that we kept the mic running well after our first conversation was technically over, and it turned into quite a fascinating conversation.* In this breather show, you’ll learn about the “sleep placebo effect” and why some people are actually more affected by their sleep debt than others are. You’ll also learn about the many different ways to measure sleep quality (there are eight!), and how to effectively deal with, and eradicate, the distracting thoughts that can come flooding in right before bedtime. You’ll also learn about why “stimulus control” is actually the best, research-backed way to reverse insomnia, and why it’s so important to do whatever you can to not stress about your sleeping patterns when you’re having trouble sleeping through the night or even falling asleep. Enjoy learning even more from this incredible sleep expert, and check out Rise here ( https://rise.com/ ). *TIMESTAMPS:* If we happen to have a night of imperfect sleep, maybe don’t worry about it. [01:30] Individuals have different sensitivities to sleep debt. [03:48] Sleep placebo is that if you are told that whatever sleep you got last night was good quality, you actually perform better. [06:28] There are about eight different measures of sleep quality, and still it is hard to define. *“We all have a genetic amount of sleep that we need,” says Rise Science app founder Jeff Kahn.* The average amount for humans is slightly over eight hours. But, as you’ll learn from this episode, if you don’t meet this genetic need every night (let’s say you get seven), then the next day, you have one hour of sleep debt to deal with. And, if this continues, and you’re operating on a full week of getting seven hours of sleep as opposed to your usual eight, this alters your cognitive performance - to the point where Jeff likens it to being at the legal limit for alcohol at the end of the week. There is so much to learn from this insightful conversation with Jeff. He and his Rise Science co-founder were actually the first to publish research on technology-enabled sleep behavior modification. Through Rise Science’s tireless dedication to improving the sleep of elite athletes across the NFL, NBA, MLS, and NCAAF, Jeff has not only witnessed first-hand measurable improvements to performance and risk of injury, but also seen that *sleep boosts sales revenue* in organizations by an average of 14%. And Jeff doesn’t just educate us all on the many (and oftentimes surprising) ways that sleep and circadian health affect every single aspect of our physical, cognitive, and emotional performance and wellbeing, he also knows which specific methods are actually effective and will make the biggest difference in the way you sleep. During this episode, you’ll learn that a lack of focus on circadian dynamics means that most conventional sleep solutions are already *completely ineffective* , and Jeff reveals that we are actually *biologically wired to underestimate* just how sleep deprived we really are. As Jeff breaks down the details of how the body functions with (and without) a sufficient amount of sleep, you’ll gain a clear understanding of the importance of *tracking how much sleep debt* you’ve been accumulating, especially once you realize that the quality of your performance in anything diminishes in conjunction with the increased amount of sleep you continue to lose. Jeff also clues us in to why worrying about the *“quality” is actually hugely misguided* , and why our primary focus should be instead on *reducing sleep debt*. Jeff also shares the fascinating behavioral science research that underpins the app and makes behavior change both successful and sustainable. As he explains, changing habits is totally possible: however, only within the right conditions can this change be possible. *TIMESTAMPS:* Sleep is the most important health topic. If you are sleep deprived, you’re not a good judge of how much sleep you need. [01:42] Jeff decided to study sleep when he, as a student, realized how exhausted he and others were. [05:00] If you don’t get a good sleep, basically everything about your functioning suffers. [10:30] There are two factors that determine how you function and how you feel. [13:59] You have a genetic need for a certain amount of sleep. If you don’t meet this genetic need, you build up “sleep debt.” [17:39] Studies equate “sleep debt” to being drunk as far as ability to function. [23:06] Lack of sleep also affects your glucose metabolism roughly equivalent to Type II Diabetes! [28:06] You are not a good judge of your own performance. [30:47] Circadian rhythm is different for different people. What is a night owl vs. a morning person? [32:48] What is a sleep hangover? Don’t be quick to judge your night’s sleep. Wait about 90 minutes. [40:55] You cannot physiologically oversleep! [42:32] How can the listener judge where they fall on the biological sleep scale? [51:02] If a person is purposely sleeping extra time because of their strenuous activity, is there a point where it is overdone? [57:09] Some athletes who have spectacular skills, would even be better if they got more sleep! [01:00:13] The app that can help you get a handle on this sleep information is called Rise.
