In this follow-up episode of BE Sustainable, our experts Dr Pippa Boyd and Dr Ankit Singh get into the nitty-gritty of turning circular economy concepts into reality within the built environment. From navigating the complexities of circular economy management to pioneering innovative business models, our guests discuss how standardisation, material passports, and even second-hand markets could be the answer the built environment needs. They also unpack the tricky question of regulation – who should be leading this change? And how can we ensure innovation in building design isn't stifled along the way? Subscribe now via:- Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ucem/id1524980861 - Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3Czk2mZlZmknjUZfwLmLTa - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/universitycollegeofestatemanagementGuests:Dr Pippa BoydDr Pippa Boyd is a Senior Lecturer at UCEM who is involved in the development and delivery of UCEM's MSc Innovation in Sustainable Built Environments. What if the buildings we live and work in could be designed to last forever? This episode of BE Sustainable explores the potential of the circular economy in the built environment. Joined by experts Dr Ankit Singh and Dr Pippa Boyd, they discuss how we can shift from the traditional "take, make, break" model to one where materials are reused, repurposed, and regenerated. Our guests highlight examples of this principle in practice, critically examine the role of material hierarchies and discuss the real challenges and benefits of implementing the concept of circular economy within the built environment. With 80% of the buildings that will exist in 2050 already built, could this be the key to achieving net-zero? Subscribe now via:- Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ucem/id1524980861- Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3Czk2mZlZmknjUZfwLmLTa- YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/universitycollegeofestatemanagementDr Pippa BoydDr Pippa Boyd is a Senior Lecturer at UCEM who is involved in the development and delivery of UCEM's MSc Innovation in Sustainable Built Environments. A heatwave is coming to the Midwest next week. Highs are expected to hit near 100 degrees in Minnesota as August starts. And we aren't the only ones struggling with extreme heat. This has been happening all over the world.  Last week, the U.K. had its hottest day on record. Blistering temperatures in the Northeast United States left more than 85 million Americans under excessive heat advisories on Sunday. And wildfires are raging in California right now. This is becoming the norm as climate change creates more extreme weather and more frequent heatwaves. MPR News host Angela Davis spoke with three experts about how cities are responding to and trying to mitigate extreme heat caused by climate change.  Guests: Emily Ziring is the sustainability manager for the City of St. Louis Park.  Ladd Keith is an assistant professor of Planning and Sustainable Built Environments at the University of Arizona in Tucson.  Ludovica Martella is the climate heat health program coordinator in Miami-Dade County, Florida.

In episode 167, Doug Parsons hosts Francisco Sanchez Jr., Associate Administrator for the Small Business Administration's Office of Disaster Assistance. Francisco shares what is the office of disaster assistance. We also discuss how climate change is requiring them to evolve their mission. SBA is actually a major funder of disaster preparedness, an increasingly important part of any adaptation response for communities. We also learn about Francisco's previous experiences doing similar disaster work in Houston, Texas. He has some riveting stories as the city was preparing for Hurricane Harvey to make landfall. It's a great episode and you get to hear how a federal agency is stepping up on the issue of climate change. Topics covered: What is the role of SBA's Office of Disaster Assistance How is the Office evolving factoring in climate change. What are some federal policies that make it hard to provide disaster assistance. Learn why disaster preparedness is a key pillar of climate adaptation. Learn how remarkable a storm event Hurricane Harvey in Houston was. See how the city of Houston prepared for the arrival of Hurricane Harvey. “Recovery has to be tied to resilience.” “People are seeing forecasts that they could have never imagined before.” “Don't fight the Scenario.” Donate to America Adapts Listen to America Adapts on your favorite app here! ---------- Relevante Links und weiterführende Informationen hierzu sind: Africa, Julia; Heerwagen, Judith; Loftness, Vivian; Ryan Balagtas, Catherine (2019): Biophilic Design and Climate Change: Performance Parameters for Health. ABSTRACT: This presentation introduces a research project involving numerical and experimental studies carried out at the University of Reading, UK, which is funded by the UK Engineering Physical and Science Research Council (EPSRC). This includes 1) the introduction of a simplified urban microclimate simulation (UMCsim); 2) Experiment campaigns at Reading and London urban blocks; and 3) the testing of a simulation model. The simplified urban microclimate simulation tool can be used as a first-cut calculation by urban planners and architects in the context of sustainable urban design at the strategic design stage. The numerical method can be further used to identify urban heat island phenomenon. BIOGRAPHY: Dr Runming Yao is a Reader in Sustainable Built Environments at the School of Construction Management and engineering (SCME), an Associate of Walker Institution for Climate Change System Research, the University of Reading and a visiting professor at Chongqing University, China. She heads the group of Urban and Building Sustainability at the SCME. She has over twenty years' experience in building energy modelling, built environment microclimates simulation, energy efficiency design, management and assessment, and indoor environment quality assessment. She has published over 80 papers and 4 books in the field of sustainable built environment internationally.
