EPISODE 32 - “The Mary Astor Purple Diary Scandal” - 04/22/2024 One of the most scandalous trials in early Hollywood history involved actress MARY ASTOR, who had made a name for herself playing virginal ingenues and good girls. Mary, who had kept a diary for most of her life, found her words used as a sensationalized weapon against her in her quest to regain custody of her 4-year-old child in 1936 after her acrimonious divorce from her doctor husband. The trial made worldwide headlines. Her sexy, salacious diary entries showed the world a more sensual side to our virginal Mary, and, in many ways, helped propel her career into the stratosphere. Listen as we discuss Mary Astor, her life, her career, and her shocking purple diaries that took center stage in a Los Angeles courtroom. He began years of therapy which in time made it possible for him to speak again. As he began to recover, he and Orson Welles talked on the phone each week for a couple of hours. "He was strong and supportive", Cotten wrote, "and whenever I used the wrong word (which was frequently) he would say, 'That's a much better word, Jo, I'm going to use it.'" He and Welles would meet for lunch and reminisce. When Cotten announced he had written a book, Welles asked for the manuscript and read it that night (Cotten, Joseph (1987). Fifty-seven years ago today, the film Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte premiered. Originally the film was staring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, but as they didn't get along and fought about every single thing, it didn't go well. Eventually, Joan Crawford feigned illness as a power-play to get the studio to agree to her script changes, going so far as to check herself into the hospital. They instead fired her and replaced her with Olivia de Havilland after Barbara Stanwyck, Loretta Young, and Vivien Leigh all turned down the role. Episode 11 of Season 2! Host, Gratton Conwill and special guest, Matt Fields discuss What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice? (1969). Day 11 What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice 1h 41m What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice is a Hollywood Horror-thriller film directed by Lee H. Katzin and written by Theodore Apstein. It premiered on July 23rd 1969. It was adapted from Ursula Curtiss' 1962 novel: The Forbidden Garden. The name of the movie brings to mind Robert Aldrich's What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, and this was no mistake. Aldrich was a producer for What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice and the name was meant to attract some of the success that Baby Jane experienced 7 years earlier. In the years following the release of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, the hagsploitation genre exploded. Hagsploitation usually involved the practice of casting older actresses who were popular decades earlier as deranged or murderous older women in horror-thriller films. Aldrich produced a loose series of unconnected hagsploitation films starting with Baby Jane in 1962 and ending with What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice in 1969. After The Forbidden Garden Novel gained popularity, Robert Aldrich bought the rights to make a film adaptation, seeing the potential to make something similar to What Ever Happened to Baby Jane and Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte. Filming began with Bernard Girard as director. After just four weeks of filming, Girard left the production, citing “differences in interpretation” as the reason. He was replaced by Lee H. Katzin and went uncredited in the final film. Producer Robert Aldrich also had plans to make a final “What Ever Happened to” film based on the novel Goodbye, Aunt Elva by Elizabeth Fenwick, but the project never materialized. Despite a mostly positive reception, the film was a financial loss for the studio. Today, What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice has a cult horror status and has been named by Edgar Wright as one of his 1000 favorite films. Christian and Ian are sick of strobe lights. For our new release review we check out an eco-horror movie from Ben Wheatley, IN THE EARTH. For our Two Hitters series we talk about the other horror movie from Robert Aldrich, HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE. We also discuss parables, American Airlines, and chopping off limbs. We'd love to hear your thoughts, questions, or any requests you have. You can contact us at: ItsOnlyFeedback@gmail.com and on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Letterboxd.
Today is the 115th birthday of the actress Mary Astor. Have you seen Red Dust, The Palm Beach Story, The Maltese Falcon, and Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte? You need to. For so many reason, if not only for Mary Astor. The world is a better place because she was in it and still feels the loss that she has left. This episode is also available as a blog post. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/waldina/message
"Miss Davis plays the looniest character in the place, which is an old porticoed plantation mansion set off in the Louisiana fields. But there are other mildly mad and murderous characters drifting in and out this house of horrors, so it is safe and fair to describe it as a comparable looney bin." - New York Times review, written March 4, 1965. This week we cover our first listener request! This 1964, black and white psychological thriller is as twisty and turny as it's behind-the-scenes making. We do end with a quick horror history lesson for the month of April. *MEOW* Thanks goes to zapsplat for the sounds heard in our intro! In which we get into a heated debate as to whether Mike Hammer is a good guy or not. Regardless, this movie is a must-see, if you can find it. Ralph Meeker is Mike Hammer, one of the hardest-boiled detectives you'll ever meet. Think a 23-minute egg and you'll get the idea. Also featuring the late and very great Cloris Leachman and directed by Robert Aldrich, whose hits include What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte, The Flight of the Phoenix, The Dirty Dozen, and The Longest Yard.
Angélica Hellish e Marcos Noriega comentam o incrível "The Invaders" (Os Invasores) episódio gravado em tempo real, com a direção de Douglas Heyes. A sua última contribuição para a série. I can't tell you how many questions I receive requesting guidance on helping kids with TMS. I figured.. how better to explain than to interview my own child? I raise my 5 kids with the knowledge that we live in a mind/body system. Sometimes we feel things in our hearts, and sometimes we feel things in our bodies. When it came to a scary diagnosis like Charlotte received last summer, we initially took the medical route to get some answers. When I realized that western medicine had taken us as far as we could go (that would be effective in helping her), we went full-on TMS recovery model, and it changed Charlotte's life. Join us as my beautiful, articulate 11-year-old daughter shares with you her wisdom and her healing. Sending love! Ryan and Matt "[this is funny-ish nickname]" Amberg are back and [this word always starts with B] about Popstar: Never Stop Stopping, Leaves of Grass, The Usual Suspects, Batman & Bill, Can We Take a Joke?, and Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte before it's on to time spent with Player-fairly-well-known-at-this-point's Battlegrounds, Prey, Paragon, Fortnite, Titanfall 2's Frontier Defense update, Forza Horizon 3's Blizzard Mountain DLC, Pac-Man, DuckTales, Chip N Dale's Rescue Rangers, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare's Havoc DLC, and Dance Central. It's a pretty [this is a descriptive word] show this week!
In episode 4 we discuss the Bette Davis movie Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte.
I'm finally getting back to some normalcy around here, but still, have a long way to go. I was itching to get back to mixing, so I stopped everything else to get this first mix up for the year. I plan on diving in this Saturday and Sunday to get everything finished up, even if it means pulling an all-nighter. Frankly, I can't stand to be disorganized, so this will be my primary objective after tomorrow. Fortunately, I won some tickets to "Shut Up, Sweet Charlotte" at the "14th Street Playhouse" for Rick and I, so Friday I plan on just chilling and enjoying myself. I think we'll head over to "Joe's on Juniper" afterward for burgers and some beer. Should be a nice evening. As for the mix, the System Edition is pretty much what I'm feeling this time of year. Sometimes deep and reflective while other times energized and rambunctious. Not having too much time to scout around the different sites, I pulled everything on this mix from Beatport. You'll notice a variety of styles from Deep, Tech, Minimal, Electro, Techno and Progressive House all thrown into a blender and poured out into a smooth confection. Speaking of Beatport, if you haven't been over there in a while, you should really check them out. They have completely revamped the site for a richer experience, with smoother navigation and I can now link back to each song individually. I gotta give these guys credit; they have done an outstanding job in putting this together. Frankly, I think they've set the bar for other online music services to emulate. Well done. If you're looking for one of my mainstream prog mixes, this isn't it. I'm guessing after WMC Miami in late March, there will be plenty of it around and I'll most likely get back to that in May or so. I don't plan another System mix until March where I'll dig even deeper into the mix. I was checking out Stompy, and they really have their own thing going on as far as underground house music. Intrigued with what I was hearing, I expect to be pulling a lot from there as well as some of the kick-ass leftovers that didn't make the cut for this mix. This is a concept I'm not ready to give up on and it should be very interesting to hear the end result. Between these two mixes, you'll notice a lot of familiar samples being used. Frankly, I'm all for it. For me, I like to play "name that beat" when listening to fresh new tunes that utilize a beat or lyric from a classic tune. There's two back to back on this first mix that uses the same sample, albeit, in different ways, that is still driving me crazy. For the life of me, I can't figure out where it was taken from, even though it is all too familiar. Listen to track 11 and 12 and see if you can figure it out. As the weekend nears, the weather appears to be more cooperative. Though it's still bone-chilling at night, the daytime is cool and sunny with clear blue skies. Just enough to keep a smile on my face. I'll be back tomorrow with the second installment, until then...ENJOY!
