Sazerac is also the steward of many fine distilleries internationally, including Barton 1792 and Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky, United States; Domaine Sazerac de Segonzac in Cognac, France; Paul John Distillery in Goa, India; and Lough Gill Distillery in County Sligo, Ireland. For all the fanfare that Buffalo Trace's wheated recipes receive (Weller, Pappy) there isn't a lot of hype around the other major Sazerac distillery's 1792 Sweet Wheat, a recipe they've been releasing since 2015. But I think it's time people sit up and take notice. This whiskey is a knock out wheater with a healthy dose of herbs, oak, mint, and caramel on the nose. On the palate, it's sweet, but not as sweet as the name suggests with a balance of leather, caramel chew, and vanilla. If you like Maker's, Larceny, Weller, and Pappy, don't skip the 1792 Sweet Wheat!

On this episode of Whiskey Straight Up, I am tasting 1792 Sweet Wheat Bourbon! A lot of people in our local whiskey communities seem to really like this one. Come join me, so we can find out if the hype is real together.1792 Sweet Wheat is a hard to find bottle and I honestly have not had anyone tell me that they didn't like it. I am not going to lie, I had it at a bar a couple years back and was underwhelmed. That WAS during a whiskey day, so other pours could have messed with my taste buds. After about a Month of coordinating and locating through the help of some bourbon thieves and a WWC member, I was able to assemble 6 of the 9 1792 expressions currently out there in the wild. The 1792 Small Batch, Single Barrel (store pick), Bottled in Bond (store pick), Sweet Wheat, Aged 12 Years, and Full Proof. The fun thing about doing something like this is that you begin to recognize the common notes that are prevalent amongst the range. Then you get to enjoy the ebbs and flows of those flavors as they increase and decrease throughout. 1792 Barton is a great distillery nestled in Bardstown and their offerings are worth the hunt, at retail of course. Cheers!
