Exactly one year after his historic comeback in the seminal Pulp Fiction (which he received an Oscar nomination for), John Travolta followed it up with this slick and crime caper/satire adapted from the Elmore Leonard novel of the same name. Here he plays Chili Palmer, a mob enforcer from Miami who LOVES movies, is visiting Los Angeles for the first time, and finds himself very eager to get into the movie business. Once there, he meets a schlock producer (Gene Hackman - RIP), a scream queen (Rene Russo), a pretentious movie star (Danny DeVito), and a menacing wanna-be producer (Delroy Lindo)....among several others. And wouldn't you know it....Chili finds himself getting involved in the movie business. :) Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld (The Addams Family, Men In Black), this would go on to be on of the more quotable and fondly remembered crime comedies of the '90's featuring a cast including several other legends including Bette Midler, the late great Dennis Farina, and the late, great James Gandolfini. This week on Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to groove to a tryptic of cool Elmore Leonard adaptations. Why? Because we're that cool. We be talkin' 1995's Get Shorty directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and starring John Travolta, Rene Russo, Gene Hackman, Danny DeVito, Dennis Farina, Delroy Lindo, James Gandlafini, David Paymer and Bette Midler up against 1997's Jackie Brown , directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster, Robert DeNiro, Bridget Fonda, Michael Bowen and Michael Keaton, capped off with 1998's Out of Sight directed by Steven Soderbergh, starring George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, Steve Zahn, Dennis Farina again, Albert Brooks and Michael Keaton again. My guests this week are two of my favorite muscle: Lit major and lil' Sis Roseanne Caputi and Actor/ Funnyman/ Photographer, Alex Robertson. Before we jump into the getaway car, the synopses.Get Shorty tells the story of Chili Palmer, mob muscle from Florida who has to collect money in Hollywood for his boss Bones Barboni and in the process becomes involved with a producer named Harry Zimm and finds himself a creative in the movie business. Jackie Brown centers around a Flight Attendant Jackie Brown who gets nabbed by the ATF for smuggling money for the murderous arms dealer Ordell Robbie. She strikes a deal with ATF agent Ray Nicollette and in doing so schemes with Bail Bondsman Max Cherry to fool the feds and take down Ordell in one felled swoop.Out of Sight is a cat and mouse love story between master bank robber Jack Foley and Federal Marshall Karen Sisco where the two meet during a jailbreak in which Jack takes Karen hostage and they develop an attraction as they ride in the trunk of a car together. Karen escapes and they go their separate ways. Though Jack is determined to pull off one more score or die trying, Karen is determined to take Jack down, and yet they can't overcome their desire to meet up again. And again. And again. Who's the coolest? Find out!
Chili Palmer, minivan connoisseur, would be on the right side of the WGA writer's strike, is all we're saying.
The John Wick Movie franchise has Former CIA and Navy Seal Shawn Ryan to keep it real, and the EXTRACTION franchise and The Gray Man has Craig "CHILI" Palmer! After 25 years in the military and 17 years in the tier 1 life at “The Unit” Craig takes us through his incredible journey after retiring in 2014. From Shot Show, to working with Kyle Lamb at Viking Tactics and then onto meeting Director Sam Hargreave and working on the set of Extraction, Extraction 2 and The Gray Man- it has been yet another growth period in his life. He realised that in retiring from the Unit, he would have to move away from the location he lived and had worked in for 17 years to really help him transition identities and careers ,and you can see this has stood him in good stead. A warrior gentleman ( as so many of my guests truly are) Craig is there simply to help others, and it was an honour, and a pleasure to speak with him. An organic, light and fun conversation, I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did. Overall, this episode provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of movies and media, as well as the importance of having mentors and role models to guide you in your career and personal life. Whether you're a fan of action movies like Extraction or simply interested in learning more about the industry, this episode is definitely worth a listen. Chili's military background is impressive. He served in the Tier 1 special operations unit of the United States Army. During his time in “The Unit”, Chili was involved in numerous high-risk missions, including hostage rescues and counter-terrorism operations. After retiring from the military, he transitioned to the movie industry, where he has worked on several blockbuster films, including the action-thriller "Extraction" starring Chris Hemsworth. Chili was responsible for training Hemsworth for his role in "Extraction, and Extraction 2" which required the actor to perform intense physical stunts and fight scenes. Chili's experience in the military gave him a unique perspective on how to train actors for these types of roles. He emphasized the importance of safety and proper technique, while also pushing realism -and of course - “Bullet Count”. In addition to his work in the movie industry, Chili is also involved in several charitable organizations that support veterans and their families. He believes that giving back to the community is an important part of his life, and he encourages others to find ways to make a positive impact in their own communities. I am sure you will love the conversation as much as I did and Chili even shares his excitement for the Extraction sequel and hints at some of the new action sequences and stunts that audiences can expect to see You can find him on Insta at https://www.instagram.com/chilipalmershooting/ I am Damian Porter , Former NZ Special Forces Operator, Subject Matter Expert from www.hownottodie.com.au and you can listen to my STRAIGHT TALK MIND AND MUSCLE PODCAST sponsored by www.realketonesaustralia.com - the best and most effective ketone supplement on the market to reduce anxiety, enhance brain performance and supply twice as much energy as glucose. Last week we had an opportunity to head up the Sig Academy in New Hampshire and take a single person CQB class taught by Kyle Lamb & Chili Palmer from Viking Tactics and Kevin Holland. This was a 2 day class and it was all scenario based with UTM ammunition and basically taught you how to be the 1 man, 2 man, 3 man and 4 man when clearing a room by yourself. This training was intense and something that I would do again and keep doing in order to add the right tools to my toolbox. In this episode we dive into the back story of two long time ZERT members, one of which is a PA state POC and the other is a ZERT Instructor. Listen to 2 guys who have taken a bunch of training talk about what it was like to learn something new and from a point of view they had never thought about before. We talk about the community and family aspect of what ZERT is and what the future holds! Thank you for listening and supporting the show. This week in the studio my special co host Chris Van Sant and I sit down with a legendary Special Operations Warrior who entered the Army after High School in 1989. He immediately attended Basic, Airborne School, and the Ranger Indoctrination Program. After successfully completing all of those courses this guest was assigned to the 1st Ranger Battalion just in time to spend his 9th Static Line jump into Panama, but this was not the last time this man would see combat. In October 1991 he transferred to the Ranger Reconnaissance Detachment until 1995 when he became a Free Fall instructor. This guest went on to pass the selection and Operator Training Course, and was assigned to C squadron with the SMU. With 17 years in the Unit and 13 combat rotations this guest has been the tip of the spear in the war against Terrorism, after retiring from active duty this guest has worked as an instructor with VTAC and Sig Sauer, but that's not all, this guest is also a military technical advisor on Blockbuster movies such as How it Ends, Extraction, Extraction 2, and The Gray Man. I am so exited to have a conversation with these two, please welcome Craig “Chili” Palmer…..

In this weeks episode of THE LIKES OF US podcast, dedicated to Working-Class Life, Art, Politics and Culture, your host, Neil Bradley, commemorates the one year anniversary of the death of his little podcast superstar, Chili-Palmer, talking about the weekend he died, and the aftermath of that loss. He also talks about tentatively searching for another dog, and how Travis-Bickle (his new podcast star) helped him both recover from the loss of Child and to re-discover his mojo. There's also the usual stuff, talking about losing your childhood confidence once you become an adult, the perils of social realism in theatre, five-minute wonders, and the discovery of a new creative outlet, this time in the form of his Research Assistant's piano, which ends with you being treated to his best Les Dawson impression!
It’s the sequel to Get Shorty and we’re in a post-Snyder Cut world, what could go wrong? We love music, we love cinema, one of us loves the last time Travolta and Thurman danced together, this should be a lay-up. Why does the return of Chili Palmer not work, and how much Aerosmith is allowed before things stop being cool? It’s a rough watch, and we try to make the most of it.
Henry discuses the book and movie versions of “Get Shorty” and “Be Cool” both written by Elmore Leonard. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Can you have a full-on relationship with someone who is taken? What if you fell in love with a married man/woman? Is it an open relationship when all parties know what is going on? Or is it one gate play? Are you familiar with the phrase: if you have to hide it, you know it is wrong? Are you ok to be a second priority? What happens when you are married and get engaged in a side relationship? Is it possible to keep both parties satisfied? But is having an affair on a side indicates a deeper personal problem? This week on the podcast, we trawl through the rare pro-Travolta pairing with film critic Lisa Rosman (RogerEbert.com, Vulture), as Barry Sonnenfeld’s charming Elmore Leonard adaptation Get Shorty goes up against the execrable, ear-splitting Christmas comedy Trapped in Paradise! In the mid-’90s, John Travolta was flying high off the success of Pulp Fiction, which set up up nicely for his cool-as-ice take on “Chili” Palmer, a suave, personable loan shark who flies out to LA and gets the chance to dip his toe in the movie business. The movie around him’s great, too, a slick little hangout movie with wit to spare and some great supporting turns in Gene Hackman’s bumbling movie exec, Rene Russo as the ambitous B-movie starlet, and Danny DeVito as the world’s smallest biggest movie star. Too bad, then, that we also have to watch Trapped in Paradise, which is like if a Frank Capra film got mixed up with a rejected Saturday Night Live sketch. Cage plays one third of the crime-happy Firpo brothers (alongside a lost Jon Lovitz and a screechingly irritating Dana Carvey, putting on a high-pitched squeal that’s apparently supposed to be a take on Mickey Rourke?), who rob a bank in a small Pennsylvania town on Christmas Eve before learning the error of their ways. (Kinda.) It’s slow, grating, and plays to everyone’s worst instincts, including Cage’s. Still, listen to us suffer the best and worst of our subjects, and see if we can make it through the other side! Chili Palmer's military career started off with a bang...or rather, a combat jump into Panama. Less than two weeks after arriving at 1/75 Ranger Battalion, Chili jumped into combat for Operation Just Cause. It was just his ninth static line jump, and although the action on the ground was minimal for Palmer, he would go on to participate in and experience a heavy amount of kinetic operations throughout the rest of his over two-decade long career in the Army, serving much of that time as an operator in a special mission unit. Chili goes in depth into the highs and lows of serving as an operator, the early days of fighting in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom, and what has changed in the SOF community since his time there. He also talks about his time working as a military advisor on the films “How It Ends” (2018) and 2020’s Netflix original, “Extraction.” Tune in to another powerful and interesting story of combat and survival on this latest edition of HAZARD GROUND! @chilipalmershooting Support the podcast by supporting our sponsors at www.hazardground.com/sponsors! Look at me. Barry Sonnenfeld managed to adapt Elmore Leonard’s novel “Get Shorty” into a fun gangster crime-thriller comedy that’s also a satire of the entire film industry. John Travolta, Gene Hackman, Rene Russo, Delroy Lindo, Danny Devito, and James Gandolfini shine as they are caught up in Chili Palmer’s orbit. In episode 141, Luke & James take a ride in a minivan into Hollywood in the 90s. Topics: a surprise Gandolfini, stars playing against type, the value of a faithful adaptation, the “Touch of Evil” love connection, the “joke” title origins, and a vote on which was better: the book or the movie. The “Dickens of Detroit,” Elmore Leonard, crafts an ambitious crime story about a fish-out-of-water gangster that plays with metafiction and postmodernism. In episode 140, join Luke & James as they follow Chili Palmer’s adventures in Hollywood trying to get involved in the movie business. Topics: the Tarantino feels, the power of a calm badass, the Literary Lineage of Elmore Leonard, a master of dialogue, avoiding writing that sounds like writing, the Godfather & Scarface similarities, an unexpected exploration of toxic masculinity, and the dream of Hollywood. Riley Bowman talks with Chili Palmer, U.S. Army Special Operations veteran, Viking Tactics Instructor, and advisor on the new Netflix hit movie "Extraction." Riley and Jacob both had the opportunity to take a training course from Chili a couple of years back, and he knows his stuff. Of course, that would be expected from a guy with more than a dozen deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Tune in, not only will this episode be entertaining for sure, it will be highly educational as well.

Chili Palmer (his nickname) was one of the military advisors for the hit Netflix film “Extraction” starring Chris Hemsworth. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I have to say why not? If you are into excellent action movies with fantastic gunplay, then “Extraction” is for you. Too often Hollywood gets it wrong with things like taking the safety off a Glock or holding a pistol with a crazy grip. What about non-existent reloads? All of this can take people in the know (like the folks of the Firearms Nation) out of the movie and walking away with a big thumbs down. Well, the producers of “Avenger’s Endgame” and “Captain America: Civil War” got it right. They hired Chili Palmer. Chili was not the only advisor on the film but his contributions made the climax of the film stand out as one of the best action sequences in a long time. Watch it you’ll see what I mean. The movie “Extraction” came out last weekend and after watching it, I reached out to Chili who graciously accepted to come on and share some of his experiences and participating on the set. Chili served in the Army for 25 years and had over 13 deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. His first mission was the historic raid in Panama taking in the corrupt Manuel Noriega into custody. Chili served in the Unit alongside Kyle Lamb, who happened to be on last week’s episode and is an instructor for Viking Tactics as well. This week we’re leaving the movie game and following our good buddy Chili Palmer to the music business with the 2005 sequel, Be Cool. This time around Chili has decided to stop making movies and start making records with the lovely and talented Linda Moon. He has to get Linda out of her contract with Nicky and Raji all while outwitting several groups of goons that are trying to kill him at every turn. Luckily, Chili is an amazing manager and is able to get Linda a gig with Aerosmith and eventually lead her to superstardom at the MTV Music Awards. Why does this movie hate gay people? Why didn’t seeing his friend murdered in front of him bother Chili at all? How is Chili so amazing at everything? What does Raji actually do for a living? Why did they pack so many musicians that cannot act into this movie? Is it really that easy to get a guest appearance at an Aerosmith concert? Thank you for all of the love you continue to show us. Please rate and review the podcast wherever you get it and if you like the show, share it with your friends. Also, please register at Spreaker.com and follow The Jester Radio Network for all of our amazing shows and content. Have a great week.
