In this episode of the Pilates Lounge podcast, I explore the limitations of the "belly button to spine" cue for core activation. While this cue has been popular, I discuss why it may only resonate with some and how it can restrict our understanding of core engagement.   Key Insights: The Complexity of the Core: I break down the core as a multifaceted system, highlighting the roles of the pelvic floor, diaphragm, multifidi, and transverse abdominals. The Role of Self-Practice: I emphasise the significance of self-practice and self-awareness for both instructors and clients. Understanding our own bodies is crucial for effectively teaching core activation. Effective Cues and Imagery: I share practical cues and imagery techniques designed to help clients connect more deeply with their core muscles during Pilates exercises. Rethinking Traditional Cues: I challenge Pilates professionals to reconsider conventional cues and terminology. By focusing on functional movement and proper joint alignment, we can enhance our teaching and our clients' experiences. Takeaways: The "belly button to spine" cue is limited and may not be effective for everyone. Self-practice and self-awareness are vital for grasping and teaching core activation. The core comprises several interconnected systems, not just the abdominal muscles. Creative cues and imagery can foster a stronger connection to core engagement. It's important to question traditional cues and prioritise functional movement and joint alignment. It's More Than Physical - Neurokinetic Therapy with David Weinstock

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 24, 2024 54:10

This week, I chatted with David Weinstock, the brilliant mind behind Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT). We dive into the fascinating journey of how NKT came to be, how it's integrated into movement professions like Pilates, and why understanding proper breathing and diaphragm function is so crucial. We also talk in-depth about the role of the psoas muscle in core stability and why it's important to assess whether it's overworking or underworking before diving into treatment. David shares his knowledge on how the psoas connect with other muscles and systems in the body, such as the diaphragm and the limbic system. We also touch on the emotional side of things—how trauma impacts movement—and how addressing this can be key to successful outcomes. David's take on failure and how it's a vital part of learning really resonated with me, as well as his perspective on the joy and reward that comes from helping others and making a positive impact. Takeaways: Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT) is an amazing system that focuses on how movement patterns connect, using biomechanics and neuroscience to assess and rehabilitate both acute and chronic injuries. NKT Meets Pilates: NKT is a perfect complement to Pilates, helping to spot and correct compensatory movement patterns and ensure optimal movement quality. The Importance of Proper Breathing: David talks about how breathing needs to involve a 360-degree expansion of the ribcage (yes, all around!) for the diaphragm to function at its best and how this affects core stability. Psoas Muscle Misunderstandings: The psoas is such an important part of the core, but often misunderstood. Stretching may not be the answer; instead, we need to figure out if it's underworking or overworking before deciding on any treatment. Body Interconnectedness: Every part of the body is connected, and understanding this is essential for effective movement therapy. The psoas, diaphragm, and even the limbic system all work together in fascinating ways. Emotional Trauma's Role: Trauma doesn't just affect the mind; it affects movement. Addressing the limbic system is crucial for deeper healing and more effective treatment. Embracing Failure: David's insight into failure was refreshing—it's a necessary part of learning and growth, something I think we can all relate to. The Reward of Helping Others: David reminds us of the deep fulfillment that comes from helping people heal and make positive changes in their lives. About David Weinstock: David has been at the forefront of manual therapy since 1973, after graduating from Johns Hopkins and traveling throughout Central and South America, learning from native healers. He co-founded the Institute of Conscious Bodywork in California and developed NeuroKinetic Therapy® in 1985. His book, "NeuroKinetic Therapy, an Innovative Approach to Manual Muscle Testing," has become an essential read for anyone in the bodywork field. He teaches internationally, sharing his knowledge with Pilates instructors, chiropractors, physical therapists, and many others. David also runs a private practice in Marin County, where he treats everyone from athletes to weekend warriors, offering personalized treatments to help them recover and thrive. In his free time, David enjoys hiking, skiing, and playing tennis, and he loves connecting with people from around the world, always sharing knowledge and learning from others. In this episode, I dive into the vital role of face-to-face mentoring in the Pilates industry. I'm concerned about the potential dilution of our practice and the pressing need for exceptional guidance. Through my visits to various Pilates studios, I've noticed troubling trends like incorrect cueing and a lack of understanding of the finer details in movements. It's crucial to honor the traditions of Pilates and maintain high standards in our instruction. I encourage studio owners to take on the role of mentors and create spaces that foster growth, ensuring the future of our industry. Takeaways: Face-to-face mentoring is essential for Pilates instructors to refine their skills and truly grasp complex movements. The Pilates industry is at risk of being watered down, making it all the more important to uphold the standards of high-quality instruction. Incorrect cueing, such as telling clients to draw their belly button to their spine, can negatively impact movement and pelvic floor health. Online certifications should complement face-to-face learning, not replace it. Studio owners have the opportunity to become mentors and create environments that ensure the longevity and integrity of the Pilates industry.   Mentoring is more than just a way to pass on knowledge—it's a critical tool for preserving the integrity and depth of the Pilates practice. How To Stop Programming and Start Teaching In this episode, I delve into the balance between programming, lesson planning, and the actual teaching of Pilates. Reflecting on my early days as a new instructor, I share some of the mistakes I made due to a lack of guidance and the overwhelming pressure to always create new content. One of the biggest lessons I've learned over time is the importance of saving time and avoiding burnout by teaching the same class multiple times. Repeating a class doesn't mean it becomes stale—instead, it opens up opportunities to dive deeper into different aspects of the work. Each time I teach the same class, I can focus on something new, whether it's refining the core Pilates principles, enhancing joint alignment, improving stability, or exploring the balance of push and pull. The use of props and other tools can also bring a fresh perspective to a repeated class, making it feel new and engaging for both the instructor and the clients. As you listen, I encourage you to focus on how these principles can apply to your own teaching practice. Remember, teaching Pilates is about more than just creating new routines—it's about guiding your clients through a journey of discovery and mastery. Repeating classes and focusing on different aspects each time can provide a richer, more meaningful experience for your clients and help you grow as an instructor. So, tune in and discover how to stop programming and start truly teaching.     Takeaways Teaching the same Pilates class multiple times allows for deeper exploration and understanding of the exercises. Instructors can focus on different aspects of the class each time, such as Pilates principles, joint alignment, stability, and push and pull. Repetition is key in Pilates practice, and clients benefit from mastering the same exercises over time. Instructors should prioritize the needs of their clients over their own desire for variety in repertoire. In this episode, Katie Crane delves into the essence of effective communication and cueing in Pilates. Katie Crane underscores the importance of comprehending the brain-body synergy for precise cueing. She elaborates on the homunculus concept, illustrating how the brain processes sensory and motor inputs. Fascial lines play a pivotal role in cueing, with cues from feet to head enhancing movement quality. Through diverse Pilates exercise examples, Katie stresses the significance of acknowledging clients' sensory experiences. To enrich clients' exercise execution, it emphasizes the importance of tactile, visual, and auditory cueing in Pilates instruction. It emphasizes the importance of using resonant language and imagery tailored to each client, fostering a welcoming and inclusive learning environment.   Key Takeaways: Effective cueing in Pilates requires an understanding of how the brain and body work together. The homunculus is a representation of how the brain processes sensory and motor information. Cueing from the feet to the head can improve movement and engage the entire body. Considering the sensory experience of clients is important in cueing and communication. Tactile cueing plays a significant role in Pilates instruction, but it should be used appropriately and with the client's consent. Cueing the most distal body parts, such as the hands and feet, can help improve overall movement and body alignment. Visual cues, such as using mirrors or props, can enhance the client's spatial understanding and improve their performance. Auditory cues, including tone of voice and music selection, can create a positive and engaging atmosphere in the studio. In this episode of the Pilates Lounge, host Katie Crane sits down with international advocate and movement therapist Jeannie Di Bon to discuss Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and hypermobility. Jeannie shares her journey of receiving an EDS diagnosis later in life after years of unexplained symptoms. She explains what EDS is, the different types, and how it can affect the entire body through the connective tissue.   Jeannie discusses common EDS presentations in the muscular-skeletal system and varying degrees of severity from mild to severe. She also addresses important myths and misconceptions surrounding EDS.    You will learn how EDS can impact Pilates clients and gain insight into modifying exercises. This episode provides valuable information for movement professionals on understanding and working with those with EDS and hypermobility. Takeaways   EDS is a connective tissue disorder that impacts collagen formation throughout the body, leading to issues in multiple systems like digestive, cardiac, and autonomic. This wide-ranging impact is what makes EDS so complex.    Symptoms of EDS can remain dormant for years and suddenly emerge during times of stress, hormonal changes, or illness. This unpredictable nature of EDS makes diagnosis challenging.   Hypermobile joints don't always mean flexibility - the tightness many EDS clients feel is a result of overworked muscles trying to compensate for unstable joints. This tightness-hypermobility paradox must be addressed.   Pilates can help EDS clients gain proprioception and find stability within their muscles rather than relying on end-range joint positions. Small modifications allow safe strengthening.   EDS awareness is still growing, and many clients face years of dismissal before diagnosis. Movement professionals can help empower clients by validating experiences and addressing common misconceptions. If you work with clients, be on the lookout for signs of hypermobility or EDS. While EDS presents differently for everyone, increased awareness can help more people find appropriate support.    Consider exploring Jeannie's resources to deepen your understanding of EDS and hypermobility. Her books, videos, and online programs provide valuable education that can enhance your ability to empower clients by addressing their specific needs and debunking common myths.   Make the effort to continually learn about conditions you may encounter in your practice. The Pilates Lounge Episode explores menopause's impact on women's health. Angela Counsel, a naturopath, kinesiologist, and mindset coach, joins Katie Crane for an insightful discussion.    Angela explains menopause as starting the day after 12 months without a period, emphasizing its individuality and transition duration. She discusses hormonal shifts during menopause, focusing on progesterone and estrogen decline and related symptoms.    Tailored health strategies based on genetic profiles are crucial. Stress impacts weight management and hormone balance significantly during menopause. Chronic stress can overload adrenal glands, affecting hormone production. Building muscle is vital as women age, with tailored exercise intensity.   Quality sleep aids muscle recovery and hormone regulation. Crafting a personalized exercise and nutrition plan is key. Takeaways Menopause is the day when a woman hasn't had a period for 12 months, but the transition leading up to menopause can take many years and varies for each individual. Hormonal changes during menopause include the decline of progesterone and estrogen, which can lead to symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, mood swings, and unexplained weight gain. Personalized health approaches based on individual genetic profiles can help women navigate menopause and make informed choices about their diet, exercise, and lifestyle. Understanding and embracing the changes that occur during menopause can empower women to take control of their health and well-being during this stage of life. Chronic stress can hinder weight loss by increasing cortisol levels and promoting fat storage. During menopause, the adrenal glands take over hormone production, but chronic stress can disrupt this process. Building muscle is important for women as they age, but the type and intensity of exercise should be tailored to individual health types. Sleep plays a crucial role in muscle repair and hormone production. Embracing one's unique body type and lifestyle is key to finding the right exercise and nutrition regimen. Understanding and embracing the changes that occur during menopause can empower women to take control of their health and well-being during this stage of life. Instead of a traditional interview format, Mary requests a casual conversation, leading to an intimate and engaging exchange. Mary shares her journey into Pilates, sparked by a newspaper article in 1959 that depicted Joseph Pilates as a strong lion, which resonated with her back troubles. She became a student of Joseph and Clara Pilates, eventually becoming an instructor after a decade of dedicated practice. Despite initially pursuing an entertainment career and later psychoanalysis, Mary's passion for Pilates never waned. At the age of 40, she began her Pilates journey, eventually blending her expertise in psychoanalysis with Pilates to offer a unique service she calls "Pilates and psych." Reflecting on her early encounters learning Pilates from Joe and Clara Pilates, Mary delves into the ethos of self-discovery and personal evolution. Exploring various psychological typologies and their correlation with the mind and body, she advocates for embracing individuality and creativity within Pilates practice. Emphasizing personalized instruction and self-exploration in Pilates, Mary advocates for each individual to forge their distinct path in the discipline, with creativity as the cornerstone. She delves into the diverse psychological typologies and their intersection with Pilates, urging instructors to observe and empower their clients to discover their unique journey. Mary envisions a future for Pilates where individuals continue to embark on self-discovery and growth, steering clear of a one-size-fits-all approach. Key Points of the Episode: Working from home during the pandemic allowed Mary to continue teaching and connecting with her clients. Mary combines her expertise in Pilates and psychology to provide a holistic approach to her teaching. Dreams are a valuable tool for self-discovery and learning from the unconscious. Each individual has their own unique typology and should embrace their creativity in their Pilates practice. Individualized teaching and self-discovery are essential in Pilates. Creativity is key in developing a unique approach to the practice. Observation and listening are important skills for teachers to help clients find their own way.
