SEASON 3 EPISODE 73: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Is Elon Musk going to buy MSNBC and turn it into pro-Trump propaganda channel? And, if not Musk – could somebody else? I may be asking the question backwards. Is there anybody to STOP someone, Musk or not, from buying MSNBC and turning it into pro-Trump propaganda? Well – who stopped Musk from doing that to Twitter? Who stopped Warner BROS Discovery from buying CNN and doing that incompletely but sufficiently enough to render CNN irrelevant in television news? We don't know for certain that MSNBC is for sale. Companies like Comcast take assets like MSNBC – which by itself has made a profit of something around five or six billion dollars since I made it into “the liberal news channel” in 2006 – and spin them off into another separate company they also own, and throw in CNBC and Oxygen and The Golf Channel and USA Network and half a dozen other assets and do it so hastily they don't even have a name for the new company and they're just calling it “SpinCo” – companies like Comcast do that all the time and never sell the new separate company oh no I'm being informed they never do that. Musk and Trump Junior have now had a "joking" exchange about it online but it underscores that this is exactly what Musk did to twitter and there's nobody and nothing to stop him from doing it here. This comes as The Wall Street Journal reports how corporations are seeing Musk as the new portal to Trump - and so is China. And as a purported old friend of his is insisting Musk has lost control of himself. This did not begin with the Joe Scarborough Trump disaster last week (though his audience in the "advertiser demo" is down to 51,000 people). It didn't even start with Trump. It pre-dates even my arrival there in 1997. MSNBC and NBC News and NBC and NBC's corporate owners have been at loggerheads continuously since long before the first newscast in 1996. To understand what's happening now, you have to understand what's happened already. B-BLOCK (31:35) SPECIAL COMMENT 2: This is not MSNBC's first existential crisis. The pre-Comcast corporate ownership at GE was ready to not merely sell the then-newly profitable network in June 2009, it was ready to shut it off and shut it down, just because the mother of the chairman of GE was a Fox fan and Bill O'Reilly was insulting her son. What happened then, and what happened with my departure in 2011, again forms a straight line with the sudden spin-off and the Musk "joke." C-BLOCK (48:00) THE OTHER WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The Philadelphia police department thinks a burned body may be "suspicious" (no; it happened naturally). Pete Hegseth once insisted it couldn't be rape if she was too drunk to refuse consent. And Nancy Mace and her chest are attacked by her former Communications Director. It's all part of life's rich pageant.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

SERIES 2 EPISODE 181: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The would-be dictatorships are stacked up so thick they have to wait for permission to land. We rightfully fear a Trump dictatorship. Right now, however, we are being RULED by a Samuel Alito dictatorship. And now we have to take measures to overthrow it. Caught flying one insurrectionist flag at his VIRGINIA home – while he was adjudicating cases that could have benefitted the Trump Coup Attempt – Alito simply lied about it, claiming he had no role in it, then contradicted himself by telling a backstory of petty personal recrimination involving neighbors – a backstory which had its OWN set of lies. And now we know that THAT entire story was – at best – a lie of omission, because when Alito was caught improperly flying a disqualifying insurrectionist symbol in public at his primary home in 2021, he was continuing to hide the fact that through much or all of last summer he was flying a DIFFERENT disqualifying insurrectionist symbol in public at his vacation home in New Jersey. It is, as you know, the Appeal to Heaven flag, stolen by groups of Christo-Fascists from its historical role in our founding revolution and re-purposed to rationalize a fundamentalist religious dictatorship replacing representative government. As the New York Times noted in reporting this story, quote, “the phrase ‘appeal to heaven' comes from the 17th century philosopher John Locke, who wrote of a responsibility to rebel, even use violence, to overthrow unjust rule. ‘It's a paraphrase for trial by arms,' Anthony Grafton, a historian at Princeton University said in an interview,” unquote. It's a paraphrase for trial by arms, and it's been flying in public view from Samuel Alito's home. And now we have to figure out how to stop Alito from completing his plan to turn this country into a religious dictatorship - a kind of westernized Iran. On the other hand: In a surprise announcement, Donald Trump has declared himself dead. “They were authorized to shoot me!,” begins his email to try to con more money out of his dumbest cult members. Quote: “I nearly escaped death!”Uhhhh…. So… you… DIDN'T… escape death? Metaphorically, Trump may be right. The words used by the President and those around him about Trump's "Unified Reich" video are a sea change. They are calling him an antisemite. Next they need to call him a Nazi. B-Block (27:07) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, apparently cannot afford a weather app. It rained so hard on him he became Rishi Sunk. Larry Hogan, a Republican, insists he's always protected women's rights. Of course he's lying. And as we realize just how corrupted and unsalvageable the Supreme Court is, Jim Jordan provides some comic relief by saying something that provides an immediate opportunity to insult Clarence Thomas and Sam Alito. C-Block (34:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I ran into Al Roker the other day, so naturally I have to tell you all my Matt Lauer stories. These are the obnoxious, vanity ones, as opposed to the assault-y ones.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Between Life and Death revisits the story of Terri Schiavo, a decade long saga that captivated the country with the intersection of faith and politics that reverberate to this day. At 26 years old Terri suffered a brain injury that left her in a persistent vegetative state, with no hope of recovery. While Terri's husband wanted to let her die, her parents insisted she be kept alive. What began as a family dispute in local Florida courts escalated into an international news event and seminal right to die legal battle that played out at the highest level of government. Politicians and the religious right used Terri's story and the power of the "pro life" movement to lay the groundwork for a post-Roe America. In 1990, at the age of 26, in the wake of a heart attack which, in the words of one expert, “liquified” the core of her brain, Terri Schiavo entered a “persistent vegetative state”. As “Between Life and Death: Terri Schiavo's Story” shows, over the next 15 years her husband Michael and her immediate family would fight over her fate: in the press, in the courts, in legislatures, and ultimately in the office of the President of the United States. Mike spoke with Executive Producers Amanda Spain and Alex Waterfield about how Terri's situation raises questions medical, moral, political, legal, and even philosophical. And they explain how her life became highly politicized, a focal point for the anti-abortion movement and even a broader Christian Nationalist agenda. But throughout it all, they tell Mike, in their film they tried to maintain a focus on Terri and her family. “Between Life and Death: Terri Schiavo's Story” premiers on MSNBC Sunday, December 3rd at 10pm ET and then streaming on Peacock. The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.
Kate discusses this week's episode of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills on Bravo. Nick Caputo and Jackie Jesko, Executive Producers of Between Life & Death. The MSNBC/Peacock documentary details the famous right-to-die legal battle over Terri Schiavo's fate, which divided a family and launched an American culture war. This film explores how the “pro-life” movement harnessed Terri's story for political gain, raising questions about the government's role in our private lives and who decides if a life is worth living. The Terri Schiavo case was a legal and ethical controversy that lasted from 1998 to 2005 in the United States. It involved the fate of Terri Schiavo, a woman who suffered a cardiac arrest and was left in a persistent vegetative state. Her husband, Michael Schiavo, wanted to remove her feeding tube and let her die, while her parents, Robert and Mary Schindler, wanted to keep her alive and provide her with medical care. The case sparked a nationwide debate over the right to die, the quality of life, and the role of the government in personal decisions. #TerriSchiavo #RightToDie #Lawless #PersistentVegetativeState #FamilyFeud #AmericanHistory #HistoryNerds #HistoryPodcast #HistoryMystery #ThisD #TVNewsHistory #TVNewsHistory #TVNewsFlashback #OldTVNews #BehindTheNews #NewsNostalgia #forgottenstorys #AfterTheFact #Viewerdiscretion #CaseyKasem #at40 #love #TFLers #tweegram #photooftheday #20likes #amazing #smile #follow4follow #like4like #look #instalike #igers #picoftheday #food #instadaily #instafollow #followme #girl #iphoneonly #instagood #bestoftheday #instacool #instago #all_shots #follow #webstagram #colorful #style #swag #amazing #followme #all_shots #textgram #family #instago #igaddict #awesome #girls #instagood #my #bored #baby #music #red #green #water #harrystyles #bestoftheday #black #party #white #yum #flower #2012 #night #instalove #niallhoran #jj_forum #love #instagood #me #tbt #cute #follow #followme #photooftheday #happy #tagforlikes #beautiful #self #girl #picoftheday #like4like #smile #friends #fun #like #fashion #summer #instadaily #igers #instalike #food #love #photooftheday #portrait #baby #me #instamood #cute #friends #hair #swag #igers #picoftheday #girl #guy #beautiful #fashion #instagramers #follow #smile #pretty #followme #photo #life #funny #cool #hot #bored #girls #iphonesia#movies #theatre #video #movie #film #films #videos #actor #actress #cinema #dvd #amc #instamovies #star #moviestar #photooftheday Hollywood #goodmovie #instagood #flick #flicks #instaflick #instaflicks #27club #Cobain#explore #fridayfuckery #podcastlife #podcasts #youtube #book #deus #fy #fyp #interview #podcasthost #radio #90s #apple #applepodcasts #author #bringingthefuckery #goat #superman #death --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/daniel-hudson9/message

In 1990, 26-year-old Terri Schiavo fell into a persistent vegetative state after suffering cardiac arrest. A fierce highly public battle took place between her parents and her husband, who wanted to disconnect her feeding tube. Terri's husband argued that his wife would not have wanted her life artificially prolonged, with no hope of recovery. Terri Schiavo's case spurred an emotional nationwide and international heated debate over quality of life, right-to-die and end-of-life issues. The case grew so notorious that the Vatican in Rome challenged American law which allowed for discontinuing food and water in certain circumstances, arguing for the sanctity of human life. Though the courts sided with her husband, Michael Schiavo, the state legislature passed a bill, known as Terri's law, giving Florida Gov. Jeb Bush authority to prevent the removal of the feeding tube. After much back and forth involving state and federal courts, Terri's feeding tube was eventually removed, ending the long legal struggle over her fate when she died on March 31, 2005 at the age of 41. So should a person's death be prolonged or should a person's life be allowed to end through, “mercy killings” or euthanasia? What about a person who is seeking to euthanize themselves with the aid of a physician? Is allowing such practices merciful or merciless? What does the Bible have the say about these issues? How can we understand the topic of suicide, euthanasia, and the sanctity of life as Christians?

Live from Golgotha it is the PNAC boys. We celebrate Easter the only way we know how, by dipping into Mel Gibson's deranged Bush era snuff film The Passion of Christ. Plus this time around we are also talking S Craig Zahler, Terri Schiavo, Left Behind along with holding Mel accountable for some frankly unbelievably antisemitic content. In 2 weeks we have returning champion/sexual chess master PD joining us to talk Zach Snyder's Watchmen and Ben is so ready to be yelled at.

we welcome esteemed friend of the pod and M&M's official Canadian Correspondent Kristel Jax to the show to discuss - in broad terms - concepts, movements, and nascent legal structures encompassing the ‘right to die,' Medical Assistance In Dying, and (Physician) Assisted Suicide in Canada and the United States. how are today's moral values embedded in the ways in which we talk (or don't) about death, let alone the idea of death itself? how do cultural production and the ‘Spectacle-ization' of medicine shape modern mythologies about end-of-life care? how might economic coercion alter our potentials in life in the most general sense possible? well, it may result in Capital's most monstrous decoding yet: the commoditization of death.legislation is on the table for millions upon millions of people in North America in the coming years, and we are still very early into the existing legal frameworks. it's something we all might have an interest in paying more attention to in the future. special bonus on this episode: intermittent pug noises (if that's your thing)Simons "All is Beauty" CommercialKRISTEL JAXDrone Therapy Podcast IG: dyingbutfine **correction: the Terri Schiavo case was about whether or not to discontinue tube feeding, not mechanical ventilation.outro: memory by Whitney This is a public episode. EPISODE 52: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) Elon Musk boasted of talking to Vladimir Putin before tweeting his moronic "Ukraine Peace Plan" that just happened to give Putin everything he wanted. Then he blasted the reporter who broke the story - but didn't deny it (3:30) Which fit perfectly in a day in which the fascists proved reality means nothing to them: it doesn't have to BE real; it only has to SEEM real. Take Herschel Walker, now accused of demanding TWO abortions and demanding she pay for them. Meanwhile back on the campaign trail he starts talking about a bull who has impregnated three females and wants to impregnate three more (6:09) And the other new darling of MAGA, Kanye West, turns out to have been plenty crazy in the Tucker Carlson interview, but they left it on the floor. All the antisemitic tropes you can eat! (10:30) And then there's Tulsi Gabbard, who blew all the dog whistles in 'quitting' the Democratic Party just two years after she was thrown out of it (12:30) While the fascists can do nothing with sincerity or love - like Joe Biden's for his broken son - but mock it (13:34) And I am reminded of when I shared a studio with Sean Hannity and he gave away the entire Far Right Game: "Why are they so upset? I mean, it's only TV - it's not REAL!" B-Block (17:40) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Morgana in Gardena, CA (18:35) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Prediction by analysis: Garland WILL indict Trump; How can an LA City Council member take a "leave of absence," and remembering Angela Lansbury and her all-time great performance in "The Manchurian candidate." (20:26) IN SPORTS: Baseball's Rusty Champs, and Hockey's Referee Hosts (21:20) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Some Trumpers want a declaration of war against something you can't declare war against. They compete with Kevin McCarthy and Saudi Arabia for the honors. C-Block (26:50) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Somebody asked me recently "Whatever happened to Matt Lauer?" A look inside his reign of terror at NBC, and when it was directed at me because the husband of the late Terri Schaivo wanted to do an interview with me and not him. And a reminder of how the utterly corrupted Joe Scarborough responded to that story by saying "The Democrats (are) the party on the side of death."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Sam and Emma host Mark Joseph Stern, senior writer at Slate, to discuss the recent bombshell SCOTUS opinions, and what other decisions remain to be issued. Then, they are joined by Matt Stoller, Director of Research at the American Economic Liberties Project and author of the BIG newsletter on SubStack, to discuss what's been going on at the Federal Trade Commission. First, Sam and Emma dive into Cassidy Hutchinson's testimony on Trump's request to let more armed protesters into the Capitol since “they're not here to hurt me,” and the Supreme Court allows Louisiana to redistrict around the disenfranchisement of African Americans. Then, they're joined by Mark Joseph Stern as he dives right into Carson v. Makin and the Supreme Court's decision to strike down a Maine requirement for private schools that received PUBLIC funding (largely due to lack of resources for public education in the area) to maintain a secular education, even though these schools are known to reject Muslim and Jewish students and ostracize children of same-sex couples. He, Emma, and Sam discuss how far Kavanaugh and Roberts could go in dismantling secularism and bolstering the funding for hyper-religious PUBLIC institutions. Next, they look to the Kennedy case in Washington, as the Supreme Court struck down the lemon doctrine in the case of a high school football coach coercing his players into Christian prayer. They first boil it down to the legal dispute, looking at the conservative justices' rejection of the “endorsement” of religion as a violation of the establishment clause, before they look to the factual dispute, covering the blatant lies that the conservative majority based their decision on, including ignoring student statements that they were ostracized for refusing to join the prayer, the fact that the coach spent over 50 games leading these prayers, despite only being penalized for the last three, and the fact that the coach voluntarily left the job in the wake of being placed on PAID administrative leave. They wrap up their interview by diving into the rapid manner by which the conservative justices' agenda is being passed, and look at the future of their agenda and the doctrines they'll look to overturn next. Then, Matt Stoller joins as he walks through the Financial Trade Commission's declaration to enforce the Robinson-Patman act requiring corporate middlemen to be paid exclusively for services rendered, looking at the role of Pharmaceutical Benefits Managers, how they extort the industry, and what role this might play in hindering future monopsonies, which leads them to a brief discussion on the monopsony of Minor League Baseball, the role MLB's anti-trust exemption plays in this, and what is being done to push the Majors to provide living wages to the futures of their sport. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma walk through Cassidy Hutchinson's extended testimony in front of the 1/6 committee, from Trump's desire to let more armed folks into the Capitol to Mark Meadows taking phone calls in secret on the day of. Tim from Rochester discusses being a High School football player, how coaches sell you a “divine dream,” and the absurdity of the recent SCOTUS ruling around that topic. Next, they look at some early horror stories around trigger laws in Dayton Ohio, and reflect on the Terri Schiavo case some decade and a half later. Emma discusses the anemic Democratic response to Roe, the Dem Leadership's game of pretend around what the Republicans' goals for reproductive rights actually are, and the crew covers some of the stupidest arguments about the hope inspired by Dobbs. You may remember the Terri Schiavo case as a bitter public feud over a severely disabled woman's right to die…or right to live. As Terri's husband, Michael Schiavo, sought to end her life, the case ignited a national firestorm that pulled in Congress, the American president, and even the Pope.By March 18, 2005, Terri had lived alone in a dark, tiny hospice room for four years. That morning, she was sitting up in a chair, unhooked to machines of any kind. Her aunt and sister were visiting. As Terri listened to them talk, she smiled. She had no idea that the State of Florida was about to dehydrate her to death.Lawless is sponsored by Samaritan Ministries, a community of Christians across the nation who care for one another through prayer and financial support when a medical need arises.
