In this episode, Dr. Carolyn Moyers dives into one of the most overlooked yet impactful topics in women's health: low sexual desire. Despite growing recognition of sexual wellbeing as a key part of overall quality of life, sexual concerns are still rarely addressed in clinical settings. Drawing from the ISSWSH Process of Care for Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) and a new 2025 study published in Menopause, Dr. Moyers explores the barriers women face in getting support—and what healthcare providers can do to change that.Nearly 50% of postmenopausal women experience GSM symptoms — yet many suffer in silence. From vaginal dryness to recurrent UTIs and painful sex, these symptoms are chronic, progressive, and treatable. In this episode you will learn:Why sexual health conversations are often missing from routine careHow to use the Decreased Sexual Desire Screener (DSDS) to identify HSDDWhat a targeted physical exam can reveal—think clitoral adhesions, vulvodynia, high-tone pelvic floor dysfunction, and moreMedical and psychological conditions that contribute to low desireHow medications may be sabotaging sexual functionEvidence-based treatment strategies that go beyond “just relax and try wine”Why giving women permission to talk about sex is a clinical skill we all need to practiceISSWSH Process of Care for the Management of Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder in Women, published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, April 2016New study in Menopause (May 2025) exploring physician barriers to addressing sexual concerns in clinical care

"With the right training, nutrition, lifestyle strategies, and the power of the mind, women in their fifties and beyond can still [accomplish amazing feats] . . . women prove every day that our best years can be ahead of us no matter how old we are now . . . you've accumulated hard-earned wisdom and power over the years. You're higher on the totem pole of life. There are countless opportunities that lie ahead." —Dr. Stacy Sims, phD, International exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist The beautiful gift of stepping into another year of life is that we have the opportunity, but not the promise, to enjoy the application of wisdom learned along the way. As someone who lives with awareness and pays attention to the reality of life, we know that our bodies need to be taken care of properly so that they can take care of us. Knowing how our bodies change as we age is crucial to knowing how to give it the care it needs for optimal quality of living. Which brings me to a reality that Dr. Stacy T. Sims, an exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist, pointed out in a recent interview on The Mel Robbins podcast (listen here), the majority, and arguably supermajority of all fitness studies and how the body responds to exercise for weight loss and strength building has been done with men as their test subjects, and the few studies that did involve women, were women who were pre-menopausal age. In fact, she points out in her latest book Next Level: Your Guide to Kicking Ass, Feeling Great, and Crushing Goals Through Menopause that in a 2019 study published by the Mayo Clinic Proceedings "found that of 177 resident physicians in family medicine, internal medicine, and even obstetrics/gynecology who were surveyed, 20 percent received zero lectures on menopause during their training. Fewer than 7 percent reported feeling prepared to help manage the care of women through their menopausal years." However, thankfully, awareness and discussion and knowledge are being more readily shared thanks to many high profile individuals - Michelle Obama, Oprah, Naomi Watts, Halle Berry, Katie Couric, Maria Shriver and more. What is most important is understanding what we can do and how it will benefit us not only in the short-term but in the long-term. And as someone who has been active all of my life, and now am at the age of 46, I began to realize I need to learn more about what I can do to keep my body strong, reduce the symptoms and continue to enjoy working out while seeing results. That is why I was thrilled to be introduced to Dr. Stacy Sims, and I have a long-time TSLL reader and member to thank for this - Janet M. Janet sent me the link to the Mel Robbin's podcast episode with Dr. Stacy Sims that essentially just blasts so many myths out of the water about how to eat, workout and think about what we do to ourselves as women as we step into the perimenopausal and then postmenopausal period of our life, which is the rest of our life - we think we need to eat less and work out more and the exact opposite is true. I cannot tell you how refreshing, validating and inspiring that episode was, so I encourage you to listen to it so you can meet Dr. Stacy Sims and get an introduction to what we're going to talk about today and why I highly recommend picking up her latest book Next Level. With all of that said, I have simultaneously been reading a book about how to strengthen our memory to do all that we can, whatever our age, to prevent dementia and Alzheimer's, and what I discovered, which will not likely surprise you, is that so much of what we can do for our physical health that will also benefit our brain health and strong memory. So today's episode is the episode that will share with you 17 specific life habits, practices and approaches to keep both your body and mind healthy for the rest of our lives, specifically dedicated to women as we move through perimenopause, then menopause (which is essentially one day), and the postmenopause which will be for the rest of our lives. Why not discover how to thrive and enjoy this awesome time of our lives because as a favorite quote of my shares, "The climax of the story always occurs in the second act. It's the best part." as written for the dramatized show Julia about Julia Child. The other reason I wanted to bring this episode to you is because the more we talk about and celebrate and model how to live amazingly through this inevitable change, we destigmatize what has been for centuries seen as a negative along the journey of womanhood. No longer! And that can only change with women - the words we use, how we talk about it, how we live, etc. The mindset we bring, the attitude, the wisdom, the support, it will all make a powerful difference that not only will help each of us, but those around us and those who will arrive into the latter half of their life after us undaunted and eager to do so because of the women who came before who refused to be seen as less-than or a incapable of achieving amazing things. ~Find the Show Notes on The Simply Luxurious Life blog — https://thesimplyluxuriouslife.com/podcast402

Welcome back to The Peds NP Acute Care Faculty series! This series was created and peer-reviewed by national leaders in acute care PNP education collaborating with one another to meet the needs of our current and future colleagues. In the push for competency-based education where faculty verify the skills of what a student can do, rather than their knowledge, our series focuses on the application of didactic content with a practical approach so that you can learn nuances of clinical skills before you reach the bedside.  This episode explores wellness for the pediatric nurse practitioner. We first discuss burnout in terms of its physical and mental impact on the provider as well as poorer patient outcomes and healthcare systems burdens. After we identify symptoms of burnout and compassion fatigue, we'll discuss what wellness looks like in various systems at work from organizational culture of wellness to ease of daily work and finally personal resilience. We end with a discussion on self-compassion and introduce the evidence in support of meditation as a strategy to promote mind-body wellness. For some, this concept is new, so the technical aspects of meditation are unpacked to facilitate your own path to daily wellness. This episode pairs well with the 5-minute meditation for pediatric providers.    References: Berwick, D. M., Nolan, T. W., & Whittington, J. (2008). The triple aim: care, health, and cost. Kedian is only the third person in the United States to receive a total larynx transplant. Doctors removed Kedian's cancerous larynx and replaced it with a donated one.喉头移植非常罕见,通常不适用于患有活动性癌症的人。基迪安是美国第三个接受完整喉头移植的人。医生移除了基迪安的癌变喉头,并用捐赠的喉头替换。Surgeons at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona offered Kedian the transplant as part of a new study. The study, known as a clinical trial, aims to open the operation to more patients, including some with cancer, the most common way to lose a larynx.亚利桑那州梅奥诊所的外科医生为基迪安提供了这次移植手术,作为一项新研究的一部分。该研究被称为临床试验,旨在向更多患者开放此手术,包括一些癌症患者,这是喉头最常见的丧失方式。“People need to keep their voice,” 59-year-old Kedian told the Associated Press four months after the transplant operation. His voice sounded rough, but he was able to keep up a discussion for an hour. He added, “I want people to know this can be done.”“人们需要保持他们的声音,”59岁的基迪安在移植手术四个月后告诉美联社。他的声音听起来粗糙,但他能够进行一个小时的讨论。他补充说:“我想让人们知道这是可以做到的。”Kedian became emotional when describing the first time he phoned his 82-year-old mother after the surgery, “and she could hear me…That was important to me, to talk to my mother.”基迪安在描述手术后第一次打电话给他82岁的母亲时变得情绪激动,“她能听见我……对我来说,能够与母亲交谈非常重要。”The study is small — just nine more people will take part. But it permits scientists to learn more about these complex transplants. One day, doctors might offer these operations to more people who cannot breathe, swallow or speak on their own because of a damaged or surgically removed larynx.该研究规模较小——只有另外九人将参与。但它允许科学家更多地了解这些复杂的移植手术。某一天,医生可能会为更多因喉头受损或手术移除而无法自行呼吸、吞咽或说话的人提供这些手术。Dr. David Lott is chair of Head and Neck Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. In this mini-series, we talk to individuals who took a detour in medical school and did not stick to the traditional 4-year curriculum. Nick Sasso, MAT comes from the world of education, having been a teacher in Chicago for half a decade before embarking on his medical school journey. He is currently a fourth-year medical student at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and is applying for residency in neurology. Already a non-traditional student, Nick's journey through medical school took further unexpected turns when his health began to quickly deteriorate. It took the care of one very tenacious physician to realize the diagnosis: postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and its associated complications. In this episode, Nick recounts his experiences with chronic illness during medical school, taking a leave of absence, and his desire to spread awareness around POTS, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), and dysautonomia. Seven percent! According to a survey that was published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, only 7% of doctors surveyed felt prepared to discuss menopause with their patients. What in the world?? Midlife women are suffering and our health care system has completely failed us! It's October 18th and it is World Menopause Day. Let's be honest, we don't need a freaking day to be concerned about this major life change. You need to understand the current state of affairs in women's healthcare so you can learn about menopause and become your own best advocate. I'm going to keep exposing the lies and pointing out the deficiencies. It's all today on the Healthy Harmony podcast. Here are key points to listen for... • The fantastic article written by Susan Dominus in The New York Times magazine, February 2023. She does a great job. I like how she sums up perimenopause and goes on to describe deficiencies in our system. • The powerful statement made by Professor Rebecca Thurston "...we have a high cultural tolerance for women's suffering. It's not regarded as important!" • Crucial facts from the Women's Health Initiative study that is affecting women's health care to this day. • How we should have different doctors to care for us in our different phases of life. Just my opinion. I can't wait to hear your thoughts! This is all about women's empowerment. It's up to you to learn and grow. It's up to you to teach your daughters how to avoid some of the misery that you have experienced. But you have to get determined to learn. This is not a “hey, I'll listen to this podcast and then I'll know exactly what to do”. This is not as simple as me just making a recommendation to you about what doc to go to. I wish it were that way! You have to be your own best advocate and to do that, you need to learn. Knowledge is Power!! And not just knowledge but application of that knowledge. That's why I'm so excited about this upcoming course and including literally everything! Everything. I want you to have the knowledge but also be equipped with a specific action plan. Host: Darryl S. Chutka, M.D. [@chutkaMD] Guest: Greg A. Poland, M.D. [@drgregpoland] Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, also known as COVID-19, is a novel virus with a rapidly changing genotype. It's responsible for over a million deaths so far. One of every 300 Americans have died as a result of the virus and infection with COVID-19, and it has been responsible for a reduction in life expectancy in the U.S. for both 2021 and 2022. There are 4 widely available, approved vaccines in the United States, yet an inadequate number of individuals have been immunized and very few are still wearing protective masks. The consequences of this include continued excess morbidity and mortality as well as the development of a variety of new variants of the virus. Our guest for this podcast is Greg A. Poland, M.D., an internist, and the director of vaccine research at the Mayo Clinic. He's also the lead author of an article published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings in December 2022. The article is entitled “Year 3 of COVID-19: Harsh Truths, Brutal Realities and Glimmers of Hope”. We'll be discussing some of the key points from this article.
