There are but 25 Chinese characters in this verse, Tao te Ching's second shortest verse. Here the amazing teaching about The Feminine Nature of Tao. Until now, Lao Tzu has refrained from any anthropomorphizing of Tao. But in this verse, he links Tao with the Feminine, the Mother, the Womb. We start off with comparisons in 9 English translations for the Chinese word for woman (牝). Then we explore how deep this Feminine idea goes in Taoism's understanding of creation. Noteworthy is Lao Tzu's use of a feminine image/metaphor to convey this teaching. Quote by Thomas Cleary, Immortal Sisters: Secrets of Taoist Women. Boston: Tambala Publications, Inc., 1989. Tao still speaks. Thanks to Nancy Hastings Sehested for her voice and question. Artwork by Audrey Davis. The song “Put Your Roots Down” is graciously donated by songwriter and singer Molly Hartwell. The copyright for quotations from Tao Te Ching is held by Fortress Press. May your days begin in peace, and become wombs for radical hope. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/marc-mullinax/message

Thurman leads a recitation of The Heart Sutra and gives a teaching on it's connections to the Four Noble Truths and the Buddha's Eight Folk Path of liberation for all audiences. Professor Thurman begins this podcast with an explanation of the Heart Sutra focusing on the the dialog between Shāriputra and Avalokiteśvara in the Buddha's samadhi field, and it's connection to Clear Light, Bliss, Relativity and how one can avoid absolutism when thinking about emptiness. Podcast concludes with Professor Thurman explaining how the practice of reciting The Heart Sutra is the key to understanding it's teaching as a tool for mind transformation and a reading of the the third chapter of "The Flower Ornament Sutra" as translated by Thomas Cleary. “The Transcendent Wisdom Heart Sutra, known as The Heart Sutra in all Mahayana Buddhist countries, and The Heart of Wisdom in Tibet, is a concise expression of the profound vision of reality that is the root of liberation from suffering. Tibetan religious all know this by heart and chant is solemnly at the beginning of every ceremony. In addition to a prescription for enlightenment, they consider it the most powerful exorcism, purifier, and developer of merit as well of wisdom.” Robert A.F. Thurman from Essential Tibetan Buddhism Professor Thurman's translation of the Heart Sutra can be found in his book, Essential Tibetan Buddhism, on page 171, under the chapter heading, “Practicing the Liberating Wisdom.”

When people lose their essential nature by following desires, their actions are never correct. To govern a nation in that way results in chaos; to govern oneself in that way results in defilement. Therefore those who do not hear the Way have no means of returning to their essential nature. Those who do not understand things cannot be clear and calm. — Thomas Cleary, Wen-Tzu, Verse 7 Don't forget to use the resources mentioned below for tools to stay sober any time during the year. Sages do not replace the celestial with the human. Outwardly they evolve along with things, yet inwardly they do not lose their true state. So those who realize the Way return to clear tranquility. Those who find out about things end up without contrivance. They nurture the intelligence by calmness, unify the spirit by abstraction, and take to the gate of nothingness. — Thomas Cleary, Wen-Tzu, Verse 6 Don't forget to use the resources mentioned below for tools to stay sober any time during the year. 2 of 2! Imagine.... you're a samurai in 1700's Japan. Your entire country is coming off 500 years of war. But now..... there's no war. WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOURSELF? On the Hagakure episode, Yamamoto Tsunetomo answered that question with his thesis "kids these days won't even behead a criminal." But at the same time, there was another thinker. Almost as influential as Mr. T. Taira Shigesuku. AKA "Mr. S" A similar backstory to Mr. T... samurai, then ronin, now old, lamenting the state of the world. But instead of crying about the fact there was no war.... Mr. S built a code... a way of living... a handbook for how ALL SAMURAI SHOULD CONDUCT THEMSELVES It is into that text, that we now ventrure.. Behold. Death.

Today we started Thomas Cleary's 1991 translation of Wen-Tzu. According to the introduction, this is the first translation of this text into English. We covered all the pre-chapter material and will start on the first verse next week. A good conversation about the origins of the Wen-Tzu plus some of the basic teachings of Taoist thought; lots of acceptance, and looking within for the answers. We also covered the three forms of unnatural death and the four practices of government, both corporate and personal. Jeff Bickner and Sue Moon speak on the koan "Not Knowing is Most Intimate" based on a conversation of Dongshan (Daizeng) and his student Fayen. This Koan can be found as Case 171 in the Tanahashi/Loori translation "The True Dharma Eye - Zen Master Dogen's three Hundred Koans." In this episode, CeeBee connects the number 2 with the Buddhist book ‘I Ching'. The number two is a powerful number in Numerology and in I Ching. He read from the book, 'The Buddhist I Ching' Chih-hsu Ou-i translated by Thomas Cleary. Earth earth below, earth above The creative is successful. It is beneficial to be correct like a mare. People with developmental potential have a goal; if they go ahead before this, they will get lost. If they follow, they get the benefit of the director. Companionship is found in the southwest; companionship is lost in the northeast. Stability and correctness bode well. All six lines of this hexagram are yin, so it is called Earth. Earth means re- ceptivity, docility. In the sky, it is shade; on the ground, it is softness. In people, it is humaneness. In the essential nature of consciousness, it is tran-quillity. In cultivation, it is the practice of stopping the mind. In the material world, it is support. In the physical body, it is the abdomen and the organs it contains. In the home, it is the wife. In a country, it is the ministers. If it is receptive and docile, it will act without backlash, so this creativity too is successful; but it must take advantage of the correctness of a mare, which follows the stallion tamely. This refers to people with developmen- tal potential embodying the qualities of Earth to practice the way of enlightenment. Thank you for listening. Dr. Thomas Cleary performed the task of hundreds of men. He mastered Greek and Latin in his teens and went on to master Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Pali, Sanskrit, French, Bengali, Gaelic, Urdu, and several other languages. He then went on to translate some of the most important works in many of these languages, including a remarkable translation of the Qur'an. More than a gifted linguist, however, he was also a spiritual master of immense depth and insight. His comments on some verses from The Essential Koran should convince anyone of his remarkable gift. His passing is a great loss to the world in general and the Muslims in particular. The clarity he provided the fortunate few who attended his extraordinary classes at Zaytuna Institute in 2001 and 2002 have lingered long after the classes ended. Shaykh Hamza celebrates this remarkable luminary along with some reminiscing with Sayyid Feraidoon Mojadedi, the original founder of Zaytuna, about the early days of the school. About the Sacred Text Messages podcast: In this age of material excess and spiritual privation, grounding ourselves in divine guidance has never been more critical. The Sacred Text Messages podcast with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf provides an antidote to the modern madness by reconnecting us with God and His Messenger ﷺ. Listen to timeless wisdoms from sacred sources and rediscover Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. Read more about https://sandala.org/hamza-yusuf/ (Hamza Yusuf).
